    Social Eating

It's been no big deal for me, either. I rarely get a lunch break, so my normal work day consists of constant grazing.....mixed nuts, Quest bar, Protein smoothie, Jerky, string cheese, whatever I can eat in between appointments. My partner actually comments about how I'm always eating. As for going out and buffets, etc. I just eat what I can eat, no biggie. I often split an entree with someone who's also "watching their weight". Or I get whatever I want and end up with a lot of leftovers. Everyone knows I've had surgery so they are used to what I eat and no one really cares. I was at a memorial service yesterday where the served spaghetti and meatballs, vegetarian lasagna, bread, salad and various Desserts. I had 1 meatball (no pasta), some salad, and dissected the layers of 1/2 piece of lasagna to get mostly the veggies and cheese. A little later I split a cookie with someone and took a couple bites of someone else's cinnamon roll. Oh yeah, and drank 2 16 oz bottles of Water but passed on the beer and wine.

    Weekly Challenge

I vote to keep the prizes and Marie I'll happily ship yours if you win. Bummed you won't be there. I am joining THIS challenge. food today: 1 egg, 1 vegetarian sausage (morning star) 1 24 oz. iced white chocolate mocha with carmel (all sugar free) 1 chicken soft taco made fresco style from taco bell 1 cup of arm roast mixed in gravy and 1 sauted small zuchini 5 hersheys minatures Having a tough time getting all my Water in but have recently discovered getting kool-aid mix and making it with splenda. Very yummy and no sugar or calories. Not sure if this really replaces water or not but it helps me get more fluids in. Not sure if I'll get on here to do this daily. I just started another grueling 4 weeks of my last chemistry class ever but I'll try to often. I only weigh once a week already on wednesdays and no fill yet and none planned. Happened to glance at my weight while getting a depo shot today and I had lost 1.1 lbs since last wednesday when I had that plateau week but since today isn't my official weigh in day, I am will wait for the official scale reading till then. Best of luck to you all, Teresa
  3. Thank God for Linda McCartney and her vegetarian sausages, they have 23 gms of Protein, They are co-starred with spinach paneer.

Plant Based Diet After Bariatric Surgery

I'm lacto ova vegetarian too, 24 years now and I am going to continue being one and maybe a part time vegan. I have been hoarding recipes for carb alternatives like chips, bread, pizza etc while also acknowledging that this is a lifestyle change and I will not be able to return to my same habits. Plant Based Diet After Bariatric Surgery

In between 30 and 50 grams. Honestly though, I don't count. Maybe that's a mistake, but I'm eating a vegan diet with some vegetarian meals; everything is predominately whole-foods. I feel amazing! I can't wait to go to my 6mo post op appointment and check in with him. Dr. Garth has truly changed by life.

    January 2020 Surgery Folks

My husband eats vegetarian. We do often more times than not. He is from India. I also needed to get in protein and fish and chicken are great for It! But there r weeks we never eat any meat. And then weeks we will have fish or chicken.

What is your favorite healthy meal/????

I love all of the vegetarian breakfast sausages. They don't have lots of calories, keep you full and are full of protein. Plus you are eating soy instead of meat. They smell and taste so much like the real thing that my dogs go crazy for them!
  8. I agree w/the Wendy's chili! I also eat vegetarian refried Beans w/lettuce, tomato. Or often in the mornings I eat salsa w/an egg and a bit of veg refried beans.

    Hunger and dieting

Honestly, sometimes I can't tell the difference between head hunger(emotional?), real hunger(what is that? Empty stomach? Many here eat so little, I would think we could experience real hunger a lot of the time!)and perhaps other kinds of hunger....craving some nutrient for a good reason...carb or more likely, high glycemic index food addiction.. Thats the one that gets me... if I eat more high glycemic index foods, I crave more. This was my prob in the past, pre surgery as well... having the sleeve is def an advantage, but those sliders go down pretty easy and in quantity if allowed. I have always eaten lower, but not low carb for the past 28 months, sometimes being good with the glycemic index...sometimes not. I had a gaining spurt at around 18-24 months, then got it under control by upping my exercise and mostly being more accountable for what I was eating. I have tried a few different approaches since the first of this year...eating more, tracking my energy expenditure with fitbit/myfitnesspal.... and managed to lose 5 of the gained pounds...this week I decided to eat under the Vegetarian/southbeach stage one program...(REALLY struggeled to get started on that...I didn't want to cut the bread and such...) which is a low glycemic index and higher Protein plan...and I just dropped 1 1/2 pounds the first day..., know its Water, but happy to see a different number. I am making this change because I have noticed increased hunger, and when I used this plan years ago, I felt a huge relief from hunger I had never felt before. After one day, I have very little hunger and it is easy to tell when I am wanting to eat for the insulin rush. That is only after one day. Here is my nutrition breakdown for the day yesterday if you are interested.

    Help! I have stalled majorly!

I really like http://www.sparkpeople.com for tracking my stuff, and if a normal serving is 1 cup it will let you track as much of that 1cup as you want, say.12 of a cup since our servings are much smaller. It can be a pain to track, but once I have done it, I am usually surprised at the stats for the day, plus it keeps me honest with what I remember eating vs what I did eat. As for vegetarian, what are you eating for Protein? I notice that people who are newly veggie don't make changes other than cutting out any meat products and that can hamper weight loss because they usually add in high carb food to make up for the meat portion of a meal. In the Food & Nutrition forum I wrote on a post the following:: "If you are not opposed to the more "processed" vegetarian fare there are tons of options. In our house we use the following Brands a lot. Home Quorn Welcome to Morningstar Farms Worthington Loma Linda BOCA Foods | Wholesome Veggie Burgers, Chik'n, Breakfast and More gardein - garden protein Nates Meatless Meatballs (could not locate link for these)" You can make any recipe that contains meat and substitute in the "fake" meat. It tends to have a good protein count, as well as being low in fat/carbs. The hard part is trying them out to see what you like and what you don't. :confused1:
  11. Hello all! I am asking for good advice about how to jump start weight loss. I have currently lost 75 pounds and thats great, im not complaining about that. I have however been around the same weight for about 6 months. I am so sad. I have started exercising more but that hasn't helped. I also recently became vegetarian to see if that would jump start it, but i've seen little results. What should i do? I want to continue to lose weight. My goal is/was 145lbs. Should i resign to the fact that maybe i won't get there? Please help, any advice is appreciated. Ainsley:crying:

    Am I too tight?

Try cutting back to liquids for a couple more days and give your stomach a chance to settle down. Some people (myself) simply can not tolerate meat of any kind. It's difficult to digest. My 2 daughters are vegetarian and after my band, I found myself joining the band wagon with them. I've also found eating with a baby spoon to keep the bites very small helps as well. Its sure gets to be a guessing game sometimes trying to figure out what to eat or not to eat. Slow down, keep it soft & smooth, and it should get better. Some people can jump to solid the day of their fill, some need to be on liquids 5+ days. Good luck :tt2:

    Lunch Ideas

Next time you happen to notice the brand name of the veggie chili would you make a mental note and post it? Do you know if it was a Walmart brand or other brand? I used to be a vegetarian and I'm completely ready to go back to that lifestyle. Chewing meat to a paste is grossing me out. Thanks!

    Reaction to undercooked protein

The simplest answer is to always cook things well, and when at a place that you can't control it, order vegetarian. Good luck!

    Vegetarian

I want to become a vegetarian but I might then be too low in Iron. Then I will have so much more to worry about if I do. I'm lost. Usually vegetarian eat seafood but some don't. It depends on the individual.

    Appetite back with a vengance!

Clearly..... not a great attitude. I see why you are frustrated, but saying that you can't eat meat....is not indicative of whether you will succeed. There are vegetarians and vegans that have WLS and get their protein from plant based foods or soy meat. Have you tried other protein high foods besides meat? A few that comes to mind: - Greek Yogurt -Cottage Cheese -Refried Beans Your hunger isn't real hunger though. It's head hunger. Until you get a grip on your mind... you won't succeed. Like I mentioned in my first post. You have to find a replacement for boredom, stress, whatever makes you eat. Go for a walk, scrub the kitchen floor, dance in your underwear.

    CONFESSION TIME..spill it

Ok you are all forgiven go forth and sneak again....ha Here's another 1 from me I had ham on thanksgiving...I'm a vegetarian...don't tell
  19. This is such a shot in the dark, but after getting banded I started reading the Blood Type diet which has me going more vegetarian. I figured since the band tended to reduce meat consumption I would try it...eliminating red meat changed my body drastically!! It was great. So I'm kind of following it when I can. My biggest challenge is getting rid of dairy. I can have mild stuff like goat's cheese, mozz, ricotta, cottage cheese...and I've been investigating alternatives in soy products which has been kinda fun. Can't believe how GOOD my body feels when i'm eating 100% Blood Type Friendly foods. No wheat, no flour...but I can do rice Pasta, rice flour, even some spelt. Opening up a whole new culinary world! Curious to know if anyone else is working with the BTD and their band.
  20. Just wanted to follow up and say I had my first fill today. It went great! No pain, and the dr. let me watch the fill process on x-ray. The needle didn't hurt thanks to the cold spray they used, but it felt strange once it was stuck in the port. I am feeling really excited/confident right now and ready to start making some real progress and feeling some tightness from the band. How is everyone else doing? Anyone struggling with the diet? I'm curious if anyone is a vegetarian and if so, can you recommend some high Protein meals? Thanks and good luck everyone!! Keep us posted on your progress!

    Vegetarian Lap-Band Veteran Wanted

That's hilarious! Thanks for the ideas. I'm a long-time subscriber to Vegetarian Times magazine, and have several (some untouched) veg cookbooks. I did just pull out my copy of "The Whole Soy Cookbook" by Patricia Greenberg, and see a few recipes I want to try. My reasons for elimating meat and dairy are not only to better my health. I am appalled at the conditions under which animals are bred, kept and slaughtered for our eating pleasure. It's inhumane and it just freakin' filthy! When I learned that beef cattle are given antibiotics to prevent the diseases they become susceptible to because of unnatural feed (high carb to fatten them up fast) and over-crowded feed lots, I was just sickened. Add to that the environmental consequences of feeding and raising animals for food, and to me...it's just not worth it. I can do without steak and chicken patties. (Sweet Italian sausage has been a bit difficult, but I'm evolving.) Sorry to rant. Bea, I'll check out the chorizo the next time I go to the supermarket. Thanks!

    April 2014 pre-op group

I haven't been on here in a few days but I wanted to give a little update. I had my 1 week post op on Tuesday & I lost 15 lbs since the day of surgery & I'm feeling GREAT!! I got to add some new foods to my diet thank goodness. Mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, scrambled egg, vegetarian refried beans, & yogurt. I must say it's a nice change to have something different lol. I got my first hunger feeling last night so I ate a sugar free popsicle. Just kind of worried me a little since it's the first time I felt that since surgery. Hope everyone is doing well & good luck to those with upcoming surgeries )
  23. I don’t consider myself one or the other. I don’t care for labels, but I do tend to say whether the dish is a vegan or vegetarian one, as my dear friend @Apple1 mentioned. But it’s ultimately up to the person to figure out a recipe if I decide not to mention it. Also keep in mind this thread is specifically labeled Vegan/Vegetarian.

    Vegetarian cookbook recommendations

I've looked at the reviews for a lot of the popular Whole Food Plant Based books, and many of them fall short in different ways. However..... I am absolutely in LOVE with a magazine I just bought: "Forks over Knives" "63 tasty, healthy recipes." It says that it is on display until 3/6/2020. I think I bought it in a grocery store or maybe even WalMart. The color photos are great, the recipes are really good, the ingredients are not too exotic, and it has a great variety. I am making a new dish every day from this magazine. (The actual Forks over Knives Cookbook you can buy on Amazon had some negative reviews that seemed pretty valid.) But this magazine is great. I will definitely buy the next issue as well. I am gluten free and dairy free, as well, and I find that a lot of vegetarian cookbooks/recipes just don't work for me. Plus, there is the bariatric angle. This magazine is chock full of very adaptable recipes. I can substitute GF ingredients quite easily, and for low carb, you just need to avoid the pasta recipes. (I don't worry about the pasta or grains anymore, as I am in maintenance and have a hard enough time keeping my weight on right now. )There are no macros listed, as WFPB relies on the overall, healthy nutritional value of the food, rather than calculating macros. I do, however, calculate the calories and protein in each recipe I make, just to give me the confidence that I am on track bari wise. Anyway, pick up an issue. Price was $9.99 and worth every penny. You could probably also get it online. The sub title is "Winter's Best Soups" and has a picture of a bowl of soup on the cover.
