  1. Hi All, I new to the forum and this is my first message of any sorts on this site. I am getting ready to have Gastric Bypass procedure on Oct 2 and I am currently on 4 week liquid diet. I have completed 1 week and 3 days of the 4 week diet so far. My questions for you all :- 1. Is eating pickle slices or cucumber slices considered cheating? I am asking this as the protein shakes I am taking are super sweet because of the artificial sweeteners. 2. Can I have tomato soup or tomato based broth ? In my pre-op instruction it doesn't mention anything related to it. 3. Will my doctor know that If I cheated with a pickle slices or 4-5 mini pretzels ? I need all the advice and help... I am crossed over that stage of not having food is fine... but I just want to chew on something that is not sweet and not protein until I am in the mush stage. Thank you all in Advance.

This is my first post on this Forum about that and maybe you can give me some insight. i'm 3 weeks post op from Germany and i have a RNY-Bypass i'm okay so far no pain enough fluid struggle with food which is normal this early i guess. the Question i really have, i use to watch a lot of youtubers for meal plans and "how my future could look" and most of them just say "i did have a bypass" but not specifically which one, i once heard that the RNY bypass will always have way smaller portions than the Omega-sleeve and i'd like to ask if thats True and i'm also very Intrested to hear how your Portionsizes are after lets say, 3 year Post op. thanks and have a great day

    An old friend of mine who I hadn't seen in many years had RNY two years ago. We reconnected a couple of months ago before I had my own surgery two weeks ago and spent as couple of hours talking about his experience. He went from 355 on his surgery day to 180 and said one of the things that really struck him was that he's very often cold now.

    Had my final pre-op appointment with my surgeon today. He gave me all of my instructions, a list of meds he called in, soap to wash with and all of my appointments for the next 6 months. One week to go!
  5. I'm 2 months post op, and I was good for awhile, but the past couple of weeks, I've been really sick and I almost always feel hungry. I've read a lot of people have it during the puree stages, but Im back at a regular diet and even after I eat... I'm hungry again 5mins later 😓. Im a bit worried about it. I did have post op complications, and like I said, still having issues... but the near constant hunger is new. Anyone else have that as well?

    Acid re-bound effect after stopping omperazole

    I've read about the rebound effect, plus all the harm acid reducers cause so I took myself off them (couldn't get them down well anyway - that chalky taste was too much) at two weeks. I have a degree in chemistry/pathology and I knew its to reduce stomach "acid" and decided to utilize baking soda (a base opposed to an acid) to neutralize the acid with no rebound. Check with your doctor, look up baking soda stomach acid reduction research and see if this would work for you..but check with your doctor first since I'm not a MEDICAL doctor..

    Face & wrinkles

    Hi all, I'm 43 and am meeting a surgeon in 2 weeks to hopefully get on the road to having a gastric sleeve. Im hopeful & excited vistualising how i will look after - tummy flap and all. One thing though has been on my mind, will I look older after surgery when I've lost weight? I'm curious to hear your experiences post surgery and if there were any supplements you were recommended to help prevent your face looking like a deflated balloon full of wrinkles?   8. How long were you out of work? I have 3 children and was actually hoping to get this surgery shortly before their winter break so I can stay home with them. Not sure if my doc will sign off on me having 2 weeks off for FMLA. What was your experience?
  9. Bad situation...great line. LOL At 5 1/2 months post op, I am finding myself getting less nauseated and my tummy tolerating things way better. I can eat more too which is a bit concerning but I'm not experiencing the foamies lately and realizing I haven't had to use my barf bags in a good while. I am stalled ATM, which is OK. It's to be expected. I had a good long run without one. The restriction is still there but not as painful if that makes sense. If I don't finish a meal, I set it aside and eat a bit more later. That can get some people in trouble, so I stay mindful of how many calories I consume in a day. I hope mine is. I need that reminder to stop. But it definitely gets better to where you can enjoy your meal but know when to put the fork or spoon down. GL

    I had the sleeve done exactly a week ago 9/18/23 lost about 12lb. Having the gas pain or pressure in the abdomen is horrible. I don’t know how to get rid of it. But from what I read in articles that’s normal my body is going thru a big change.

    Let's Talk About Maintenance

    Aah the how often to weigh debate. The responses seem to swing from very rarely/never to daily. I weighed every day for the first two years or so but now weigh 3 or 4 times a week. In the past if I thought I was putting on weight I wouldn’t go near the scales. If I didn’t see the number on the scales I could believe I wasn’t putting on weight even if my pants were very tight or bought the next size. So me weighing as I do now is about what I need to do to keep myself honest. I say you know you best & weigh yourself as you need to keep yourself motivated & on track. Has my hunger returned, yes. It did so slowly. Has it increased since it fully returned, no. There are still odd days or times I’m not all that hungry at all. (Wish that happened more often 😁.) I try to eat very much to a routine & not eat outside of that. If I think I’m hungry I consider if it’s real hunger or head hunger. Such as when did I last eat? Did I eat a smaller portion at my last meal? Is it almost time for a meal? How am I feeling - bored, sad, annoyed, stressed, etc. It can be an ‘interesting’ discussion I’m having with myself. 😁 This helps most of the time. I’m sorry about your injury @huskymama especially after achieving so much. But you didn’t have to go back to shakes to lose your weight just go back to how & what you were eating before your injury though smaller portions as you can’t be as active at the moment. Meet your fluids & protein goals. Eat your protein first then vegetables & last any carbs you’re allowed if you are able. Return to lower fats, carbs & sugar. Check with your dietician for ideas & guidance. Focus on upper body exercises because of your injury. Search for some exercises for those with limited mobility online. You can do this.

    November Surgery Buddies 2023

    I'd like to give you November people a huge red flag heads up warning. Please discuss with your surgeon (do not let them blow the question off, because they'll try to!) Everything went excellent for me (surgery September 20) except recovery room wake up. I was in outrageous pain and the nurses didn't care. I was experiencing nausea, pain in the front side of both shoulders, and overall abdominal pain. I couldn't help but loudly vocalize, "Owww, owww, owww!" All the nurses would do was say, "don't worry, it's just gas." And they handed me a barf bag. What I wanted them to do was empathize and give me some drugs to get me out of pain. But it took about 30 min of torture before someone finally did that. I was outraged at their lack of care. At 2-week follow up with my surgeon's nurse, I told her about it and she shared, "I'll discuss this with Dr. Reddy because you're the second person today with that same story. That's awful. Something needs to be done." This was at Sutter Roseville Hospital, Roseville CA. The recovery room is for all surgeries, not just gastro. But I felt like my well-being was totally violated, and I just want to tell all of you to please, please discuss your recovery room expectations beforehand with your surgeon. Aside from that half hour of hell, my recovery has been flawless. Not one minute of pain or nausea. Didn't take any narcotics after hospital release the following morning. Just Tylenol, and was fine. No nausea meds needed either. The one thing that is concerning me a bit is how un-energetic I am. I think it's because I'm still recovering and will improve rapidly when I am eating the final phase of foods, which actually began today. Good luck to all of you.
  13. I had gastric bypass lol Man, fish is one thing I never liked. I didn't like tuna fish for awhile after surgery(always liked it before). A couple months ago, I started liking it again. Some things I don't like anymore are tacos/nachos (those were one of my favorites!), hot dogs, last night we made homemade subs that I usually like but I just didn't care for it this time, bread type of foods are starting to bother me now. I too can only eat about 2 slices of pizza depending on how thick the crust is. If I eat more that two, I'm asking for it lol. Sometime I can eat 2.5, that's rare. I don't like a majority of the sugar free drinks(the packets). I used to like the lipton sugar free lemon iced tea, not anymore. I can't stand making my own coffee anymore and the only coffee like drink that I really like is a small iced caramel latte from Mickey D's. Better than Starbucks strangely. I ask for 2 equal, 2 cream, whipped cream and caramel drizzle. No, it doesn't make me sick or dump. If it was a medium, I would get an upset stomach tho. Its hard making meals when you don't always have real protein. My fav protein is chicken. I've been using recipes lately and they've been good. But yeah, the salad sounds good, maybe I can make a chicken salad tomorrow for lunch. I have a frozen chicken that I got from Walmart that a bariatric patien suggested and the nutrition facts are pretty good on it and it actually tastes like chic fil a but better in my opinion lol. I saw a recipe for mcgriddle muffins. Except I'm going to use my protein pancake/waffle mix for extra protein. They sound so good. Has anyone gotten sick of yogurt or protein drinks that are already made? Lol I have and that was since a few weeks after surgery. I just bought a protein powder this month and I want to start making 2 protein smoothies a day. Why does some stuff that has sugar in it not bother me but others do? I should eliminate sugar stuff and switch to sugar free instead, but hey sometimes it's better and just need it. Is there something wrong if it doesn't make me sick? Or am I just lucky? Lol I don't like that I don't get sick if I eat something with sugar 😪 Sorry this was long

    Extensive weight loss

    I have had labs done and the only things that are off is my Iron and vitamin D. My PCP said that my Iron level although on the low side in my blood is not awful but I have no reserve.My body is just using it all up and not saving any and my vitamin D has always been low. I also had the ultrasound that showed a fatty liver.I have an appointment with Gastroenterologist next week.

    Sadie and diarrhea

    Does she mean just after the surgery? It’s not uncommon to experience some very sudden unexpected diarrhoea (no warning cramping) in the days after surgery regardless which surgery you have. Yes, it can be quite smelly too & dark as it contains remanent blood from the surgery. It happened to me but only once. A friend had it for a couple of days though her surgeon recommended she wear disposable knickers for a week or so just in case this happened. A godsend she said. We both have sleeves. Can’t comment on whether it can be a long term issue with Sadi. Can’t recall anyone mentioning it here either.

    Tortillas

    I am 6 weeks out from surgery and 23 lbs down (sleeved on 08/15/23). Can I eat a low carb tortilla with cheese and chicken? Has anyone else tried? I’m past the soft diet and now on a regular diet, so I’m scared to try new things. I’ve been very careful and haven’t been sick yet (knock on wood).
  17. That seems an awfully low caloric goal for maintenance for someone your height & weight unless you are not active at all. Have you checked a BMR (basal metabolic rate) calculator (linked the one I used below). It’s not perfect but it will give you an idea of what you may need to be consuming to maintain. Of course other issues that calculator doesn’t consider (like medical issues, medications, genetics, metabolism, muscle mass, etc.) can impact how many calories you may need. I checked mine a few months back out of interest & discovered it recommended about what I had been consuming (1500 +/- calories) for someone my age, height, weight, gender & activity level (not much lol!). So it was about right, at least for me, as I’ve been pretty stable with my weight (except for about a 5lb gain because of a medication issue - sorted it & lost 3 of those lbs without doing anything). You may be surprised how much food 1500 calories actually is. I eat about a recommended serving size (e.g. 3-4ozs meat & a good cup of green vegetables), eat three meals a day & about 4 snacks. But I am pretty careful with what I eat so mostly nutritionally dense foods that are predominately low processed. Best thing to do though is to slowly increase your calories & watch the scales. You may need more or fewer calories than what your dietician suggested or the BMR calculator recommends. Be careful though. An extra 100 calories a day will equate to about a 10kb gain over a year - gasp! https://www.calculator.net/bmr-calculator.html

    do a search on this site for the "three-week stall". You will find over 17,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding). Happens to almost all of us. stick to your program, stay off the scale for a few days, and it will break. I promise.
  19. have been using balsamic dressing almost daily. have been also prepping for the liquid diet to come have 6-76 more weeks before surgery at this point. Been drinking 2 protein shakes a day then a meal around 4 pm. good luck with everything

    Do you have a piercing?

    Gold and silver are softer and therefore more porous on a microscopic level, and can "pit", meaning bacteria or other irritants can cling to them. They can also flake off into the open wound, and are more reactive with body fluids. They're generally fine for a healed piercing (which can take a few weeks to several months depending on what kind of piercing it is), but because they're not as hard and non-reactive as something like surgical steel or titanium. I worked, unfortunately, at a Claire's in a mall for several years when I was in college, and I know that stores like that push gold as being "safer" when really it is "more profitable". I had nothing but problems with piercings done in gold with a piercing gun. I have since gotten SEVERAL more piercings done with a single-use hollow needle at a piercing parlor, and have had none of the same issues. The right establishment should almost feel like a medical office.

    Prior abdominal surgery and the sleeve?

    I had numerous abdominal surgeries myself (7 - appendectomy, cholecystectomy, 2 C sections, hernia repair, hysterectomy and constricted intestinal tract) and I still had my RNY a month ago. Yes, there were adhesions the doctor repaired quite a few and my entire abdomen was a solid black bruise (from my breast creases all the way down past my belly button). I still a month out have bruising - but it was still worth it! I only mention the bruising because no one prepared me for that. Even the PA 3 weeks out was surprised upon seeing my abdomen being a solid black! So, hold out hope just be aware you might have bruising.

    Smoking

    I've never smoked, but my surgeon AND my insurance both required that smoking be completely stopped. My insurance said 3 months and my surgeon said 6 weeks. This is what I found as to why: "Nicotine can adversely influence the cardiovascular system, leading to irregular or unstable blood pressure (hemodynamic instability) under general anesthesia. Furthermore, the effects of nicotine have been proven to reduce blood flow, increase heart rate, and induce hypertension. Maintaining a good blood flow is important both during and after surgery, which is why nicotine is so dangerous to surgical patients."

    Extensive weight loss

    I have seen multiple providers this past year for this and different reasons, along with my PCP office and they all tell me this is my new normal. It was not untill I fainted a few months ago that they started to think there might be a problem. I have had lab work and an ultrasound of my thyroid and there is nothing wrong. My PCP did say that menopause could be part of my problem too but I have not had my hormones checked.I do have an appointment with Gastroenterologist next week because they found I have a fatty liver.I actually had a fatty liver before surgery and was told that it will go away after the surgery? I hope GI can give me some answers. I feel like the guy in the movie thinner.

    It really depends on what your doctor says. I had my surgery on the 20th and right now I am still in the clear liquid stage (no shakes yet). I sip a drink every 10-15 minutes. However, this week, I can begin to add pudding and yogurt. Each doctor's recommendations are different as I have seen others start right way with some pureed foods.

    I just had my surgery on the 20th. I was on the liquid diet for two weeks and it is hard. I am not going to lie, but I did take a bite of food now and again in the beginning. I found later that if I used some type of seasoning that replicated some food tastes, then it helped. I used bacon seasoning, chicken seasoning, and other gourmet seasonings I could find.
