    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

So, it’s been a weekend. I’m in AL so the heat and humidity are insane. Yesterday we went to see the Savannah Bananas. I stood in the blazing sun and heat for almost 2 hours before we could go through the gates. I was close to passing out. Finally got to our seats and immediately had the hubs find me some water. I poured some on a napkin and even down my bra 😂 Don’t judge. Lol. Thank goodness our seats weren’t in the sun. After I was out of passing out phase hubs went and found me some shaved ice which was amazing. There was no food there I could eat, so I had snuck in a protein bar and it was melted and I ate 2 bites and was good until 730. Today ran some errands. Had one egg over medium for breakfast. Protein shake for lunch. Then decided to take a walk at the state park. Again SO hot. Did almost a mile but it was just too hot. Came home had a Popsicle and figuring out dinner. I made hamburgers out of some ground sirloin. I made me a patty of under 2oz and put half a slice of American on it, and a tablespoon of baked beans. Didn’t finish it and so far, my stomach is good. Yay meat! 🤣
  2. No hair loss with the sleeve. Post revision to RNY (for gerd), I experience quite a bit, about 6 months of it. Started late too like 5 months in. If you aren't meeting your protein requirement, just swap some of your junk food for something healthy with protein. If that is too difficult, then try to have a little protein with each meal to help fill you up. For example, if you eat chips, add a string cheese to that meal. I think a bariatric therapist may be able to help with the junkfood cravings if you have access to it. Since you are still in the honeymoon stage, that may help you for the future when the appetite comes roaring back.
  3. I have been mind craving pasta so I bought some Banza chickpea spaghetti noodles. Haven't tried them yet but the protein content is 11g for a 2oz serving and 190 calories. Have you tried these anyone? I also bought a handheld spiralizer to try making noodles from veggies. I see so many recipes on YouTube that look soooo good, but the real question is do these alternatives really taste good???
  4. I know that theres not many options wghen surgery was just a week away but I'm sick of boullion and none broth. Is egg drop soup ok strained by chance?

    Food Before and After Photos

Yesterday’s food (only the things I took pics of but there were other foods throughout the day) Parfait w/peach, blueberries and strawberries & Salmon pate w/ crackers, baby lettuce and baby carrots (ate about half) Total calories for the day was about 1600. I never track total calories anymore but I often spot check certain meals to see how much protein I’m getting. It was wild to see that I tracked about 60g protein but over 100g carbs. I’m not limiting carbs by any means but the fiber content was well below 28g so I know I could have made better choices (I’m look at you muffins and biscotti 😂)

And so it begins...day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet...

Ok, so day 4 sucks, too. But mostly because I have headaches, dizziness, and major fatigue. I'm only getting around 600 calories per day, which at almost 14 months out from my original surgery, is a problem. But there's nothing I can do about it. I drink 3 shakes per day, unsweetened tea, protein water, eat sugar free popsicles (for the calories at this point), and sugar free jello. I'm over the "omg I want foooood" part, but now it's the side effects of not enough calories. UGH.... I'll be glad when I get this surgery and can heal and move on already!!!
  7. I like roasted edamame and chickpeas for a crunchy snack once and a while. They are a bit calorie dense but healthier than chips. They also give you a boost of protein (especially the edamame) and fiber. Low fat/ fat-free high protein yogurt is a great choice. Low fat cheese (I like the babybel). Raw veggies with dip. The dip you'll make is fat-free plain Greek yogurt and dry ranch dressing powder to taste. Great snake and another source of protein. For a treat, bryers ice cream makes a carb smart version that's pretty tasty, i get the fudge bars, which are around 60 calories, but limit that. Sugar-free pudding, jello, and popsicles are better. Another tasty treat is sugar-free redi whip with strawberries. Eggs are great for breakfast and so versatile: add a bit of reduced fat cheese or turjey sausage or low fat ham, make a crustless quiche, or boil; the ideas are endless. Tuna/chicken/egg salads are great for lunch or a quick dinner; just mix with low-fat mayo and whatever else you like. When I make them, I do enough for a few days and have lunch already made for the next day or two. If you do decide to eat pasta or rice, opt for whole wheat or protein pasta and brown rice on occasion. We had Italian the other night, and I literally only had 1/4 a cup of whole wheat rigatoni with my protein and sauce, and that was way more than enough. I ended up only eating half of my dinner (about a third to a half cup and finishing it a couple hours later for a snack). Leftovers are a great option for lunches and sometimes breakfast. I find that I plan those better/healthier than my other meals. I agree with some of the other suggestions, such as talking to your dietitian. They can offer you specific guidance and support. Another idea to try is therapy to understand why you are making the choices you are. It may only be 1200 calories, but the choices are poor with poor nutrients. Us RNY folks need to be on top of our nutritional game between food choices and vitamins and supplements. The habits you are building now will stick with you and may lead to an undesirable outcome in the future. I wish you all the best moving forward.
  8. Oikos Pro yogurt. 20g of protein per cup. Vanilla and Peach are my favorites. Mix with fruit serving or a bit of granola for crunch. edited to add: I also have used the 3 ounce proteins shots. The taste isn’t so good but it’s only 3 ounces and gives you I believe 20 to 30 g of protein.
  9. One of my favorite high protein snacks are hard boiled deviled eggs. Just mix yolk with light mayo, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper.
  10. you guys are lucky. We were allowed to have 4-5 protein shakes a day, all the ultra-low-cal clear liquids we wanted, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, and 1 cup each of tomato juice/V8 and chicken broth. No solid food - at all.
  11. Hey people! 4 months and 3 days post RNY. What meal and snack ideas can you give me that are high in protein? I'm still not hitting my goals and currently thinking about drinking protein, turns my stomach. This happened in the beginning aftrr surgery as well. Any good recipes? I know there are recipes on here somewhere, but what are your top high protein foods? I need to start planning my foods ahead again. How long did everyone's hair loss last? When I had lapband in 2009, my hair loss wasn't as bad as it is this time. My hair gets SO tangled! Probably because this time my hair is lightened and colored with fashion colors. But, when did the hair loss start to ease up for you? I feel like im overeating. I feel like I could have lost a lot more weight by now. If it's not overeating then it's high calorie foods. For example, I can eat almost a who bagel with a serving of cream cheese and a 1/2 to a cup of cherries for breakfast. A lot of the times I skip lunch because I eat whatever I have at breakfast at that time. Then if I have a snack yes I'll eat a junk food item like a serving of chips or a cheesestick and then at dinner I'd have the 3 ounce of chicken, with 1/2 cup veggies and spoonful (the ones you cook with) of rice. Of course I'd have regular BBQ sauce or chic fil a sauce (a serving) and a serving of butter on my rice. Then awhile later before I get in the shower I'll have one or two of the following; a popsicle, another serving of chips, popcorn, yogurt, ice cream sandwich (yep I shouldn't be eating this. No, it hasn't made me sick and no I don't have it often), a cheesestick, etc. Or sometimes I'd eat some cereal if I know it doesn't make me feel sick. When I write it out, it doesn't look like I'm overeating, but when I track it, it comes out to be around 1200 calories. I shouldn't stress, but I need to make better choices and maybe make schedule for water intake and food intake. PLEASE, no rude/mean replies. Please be helpful. I want to succeed, and right now I feel like I'm not gonna succeed eventhough I'm not gaining, I'm still slowly losing. Thanks for your time!

I'm more worried about calories, protein, and liquid. I obsess over making my goals each day. It's getting to be a bit much. The thought of dumping also gives me a ton of anxiety.
  14. I’m on day 6 of my liver shrinking diet. I actually thought it would be a lot harder. I’m just bored of my selection of food. I do 2 protein shakes a day and one meal. Usually 5 oz of lean meat (chicken, shrimp, salmon) and a cup of veggies. No butter. I did make a home made cabbage and other veggie soup to “snack” on here and there and count that as my veggies. I’m just getting really bored of the food. Anyone have any suggestions or meals to make it a bit more bearable? I have 2 more weeks. Surgery date is July 10.

Liquid Phase, pre and post op

I like the Premier protein flavored water (they have peach and tropical punch). I also love the vegetable bone broth (chicken, too) and I add bouillon paste to it for deeper flavor. I like the blue protein gatorade and I like the immunity booster Propel water in mango, pineapple peach, strawberry kiwi, watermelon, and black cherry. If you're really desperate for hydration and you've already met your protein goals, get some plain water and add sugar free kool-aid or IV hydration or something like that to it. Different flavors, no sugar, and still getting your water in.
  16. Hello, My surgery date is approaching, and I am excited about it. My surgery date is approaching, and I am excited about it. I am feeling nervous but also confident that I will get the results I am hoping for. I am grateful for the support of my family and friends, and I am looking forward to starting a new chapter of my life. I'm currently eating exclusively Premier Protein shakes and unlimited non-starch vegetables. I'll keep updating!
  17. I can only speak for myself. That being said I’m in the US and I had to go on a “diet” before my surgery to yes decrease the size of liver. I had to stop stepping on the scale as it will drive you batty. Focus on your meal plan. 3 weeks is short period of time and it’s not expected to drop off that fast. Weight loss is only one goal. Water is one of your goals, and meeting your calorie and protein numbers is another. Your comments are kind of unusual for someone 3 weeks out tho. Usually it’s about other things, nausea, not feeling hungry…etc. if you’re skipping eating that will effect your weight loss. If you follow your meal plan to the letter you will see the difference. You didn’t really mention what stage of your meal plan you are on now (liquids, soft, purée). Best of luck.
  18. This is what is happening to me. I discussed it in my support group, they said it is normal. They called it a 3 week stall. Said it is very common. 14 lost pre surgery and 8 post surgery. They all said to keep doing what I’m doing and focus on getting in all the required vitamins, protein, and water, and WALK.
  19. Having surgery doesn’t mean you can’t manage your eating & drinking or it will be too hard to do. It’s more that it may be different to how you used to do things & you just need to establish new routines & habits. A lot of our old habits did us no favours anyway so they are no loss. Vitamins morning & night. Many people take a packed lunch to work. Pack your meals & snacks in a small ice bag & take it with you from vehicle to vehicle. Make sure you always have your fluids with you & sip, sip, sip. Pop everything you may need in a back pack or similar so it’s easy to grab & go. Be organised & allow for the unexpected. My family are on the land too & always take a large water bottle, a thermos of hot water & a packed lunch &/or snacks with them if they aren’t going to be near home. They haven’t had surgery but it’s their routine so it’s not impossible to do. Benefits of the surgery (loss of appetite, the staged return to eating, possible temporary changes to taste &/or smell, boosted metabolism) give you time to evaluate your old eating habits & try new more nutritious foods & cooking methods. Remember also the most restricted eating period after surgery is only usually about 6 weeks not forever. Therapy can also be very beneficial too. Helping you understand your relationship with food, what was behind your eating habits, cravings, etc. Doing the head work is essential. And sometimes realising something as serious as surgery is your only option to improve your health & life is the best motivation to make changes.
  20. Hi!! I will be having the SADI-S surgery, should be July 2023. I get my exact date next week! I am purchasing the items I will need for the 2 week liver shrinking diet pre-op, as well as the liquid 4 weeks post op. I would really appreciate it if you could list the clear liquids you drank that you loved!!! So far, I love Unjury chicken soup. But I can't stand anything in the liquid protein sampler. *Liquicel- maybe I don't know what to mix it with!! The grape and unflavored gagged me. *Nectar powder-crystal sky. *The little protein shots, pink lemonaMr. Please help!!! I can't waste any more money. Nicole
  21. Protein water is another option too. Watch the protein bars as many are just glorified candy.
  22. I'm a BIG milk lover and my dairy based protein shakes upset my stomach quite a few times the first couple weeks after surgery. I noticed though that I was able to eat other dairy products with no problem. Also, some do have trouble with air bubbles causing gas, etc. from blending their drinks. I continued drinking milk despite the random bouts of running to the bathroom. Thankfully mine wasn't lactose intolerance. Just a fussy tummy. It eventually got better and became a non-issue.
  23. We've all been here, and we've all proven just how unsuccessful that route is. None of us would have had WLS if if it were as easy as just complying with the pre-surgery program - it's too restrictive and meant to be temporary. When you're not mentally ready for a change like this, your head is absolutely going to be throwing up every reason not to do it, so I'd consider seeing a bariatric therapist to help you before starting the program. As for on-the-go nutrition, there's nothing wrong with taking a packed lunch, or indeed a fanny-pack of nutritious snacks. I take a handful of small apples and individual high-protein yoghurts with me to work, which I snack on whenever I get a second (my second job, which is a cook in a cafe with barely a break over a day's shift - so I'm surrounded by food I shouldn't and don't touch - hence my little pile of apples). And as Tomo said - vitamin supplements are essential, for both bypass and DS, though I think DS requires more. But it's just a matter of adding it to your daily routine. I take mine every evening before bed.
  24. I had surgery 6/15 and for a few days my dairy based protein shakes making my tummy upset. Is this really common?
  25. I, too, go on phases with food. Sometimes it lasts for months and even years lol. I am on a natto (fermented beans) kick right now. I had it with nori (dried seasoned seaweed), 28g kimchi, and 11g sweet potato airpopped crackers. Total 158 calories, 6g fat, 15g carb, 9g protein.
