    Pre-op picking

I am a sleeve revision to bypass and I'm eating things I know I won't be able to eat for a long time based on my sleeve recovery--fresh cherries (they will be out of season by the time I can eat them) coconut, corn, and celery (too much fiber, not enough vitamins) and panko shrimp (too much fat). Oh, and toast. It took me a couple of years to be able to eat toast. Other than that, I'm just eating my normal diet. I'm also wondering about my presurgical protocol. My surgeon didn't tell me liquids only the day before surgery like some others here. Guess he's ready for whatever might be in there.
  2. Calorie restrictions: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25411646/ I was told by my revision surgeon to think of an obese persons liver like a marbled steak (fat ribboned through out- fatty liver) and the goal is to remove that fat and make it more lean, soft and pliable so that it does not crack tear or break while manipulating it to reach the digestive system
  3. I finally had my surgery on 6/24, (postponed from 4/1, thank u Covid). This surgery went 100000 times better then, then my first surgery in 11/2016 w the sleeve. I had a completely different doctor, hospital staff & support system thru my doctors office, this time. I woke up w achey pain, nothing to severe. The incision where they went in for the hernia and a lower right abdomen one were kinda sore, but nothing Ice packs couldn’t help. Came home the next day, & still nothing to severe pain wise to use anything higher then Tylenol. I’m nervous, to get over the recovery period and on to losing weight. (The sleeve was a fail for me and only lost 40lbs on it). But also excited and ready for this next chapter & life style change. :)
  4. Not only do you lose vitamins with the bypass but you also have less calories absorbed. For instance I lost 14 lbs the first month after VSG and weighed 296 day of surgery. I lost 12 lbs gastric bypass after first month and weighed 180 day of surgery. I can only imagine what I would have lost had this been my first surgery being 116 lbs heavier. Not to mention I wouldn't have erosive esophagitis D and who knows maybe GERD free ? I also had hiatal hernia repair when the did the bypass revision. It was a much more painful surgery for me.
  5. hi there. i have been on hypothyroid meds for like at least 7 years. i too have struggled with weight and my primary recommended i look into vsg. i know some people develop GERD but as sleeve is the less invasive, that is the best option for many people, myself included. you can always revise if you have to, but many people seem to thrive after vsg though each case is unique in its own way. i've been back and forth but i think this is the best option for me and im sticking to my july 20 vsg date. good luck to you!
  6. Thanks for the reply! This revision stuff can be scary and makes me nervous. I guess just the not knowing part. Would you mind elaborating on the differences? What was your experience like?
  7. I had heartburn before the sleeve and reflux runs in my family, so I should of had the bypass to begin with but the surgeon said go with the sleeve and so I did. I loved my sleeve and I am sure you will love yours. Fingers crossed you never have the GERD. My revision was awfully painful and the differences between the two are something else.

Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD

I had a revision and my surgeon made me do the preop and nutrition class again. The insurance needed to do a peer review with my dr but it was approved. You should not have an issue.
  9. I'm another sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD, which I didn't have before my sleeve. I would not have LINX, too similar to LapBand for me. When will doctors figure out that foreign bodies in the GI tract eventually cause problems? Like Tracyringo I'm on Medicare and it took a week for them to approve the surgery and another 2 weeks to get it scheduled. I had an upper GI, EGD, manometry, and a BRAVO test (yup, have GERD, told them that without the test) but other than those to nail down the diagnosis I haven't had any other test or diets or hoops to jump through. I'm scheduled for Monday 6/29. Because your revision is for medical reasons, I would expect the process to go quickly for you, too. Good Luck!
  10. Thank you for that information! Hopefully, mine will be scheduled quickly then, too! Sorry, to hear you are still having acid reflux! It's funny, I didn't have it at all before the sleeve, now possibly revising to a bypass. Wondering if I had the bypass originally, would I have this problem at all.
  11. I am on Medicare and also had my sleeve in 2017. I did not have to do any of the stuff I did the first time they just scheduled my surgery. I also was at original goal so if you have weight gain ect I am not sure how that would work. BTW I still have acid a month out of revision and I am not the only one their are others in this forum that still have it after revision. Good luck.
  12. I'm in the early stages of going in for a revision to a gastric bypass.... I had the sleeve in 2017, and developed acid reflux from that surgery. The acid reflux/heartburn only developed and worsened, despite being on twice daily Protonix. Eventually, this year, I got an upper GI where they found I had severe acid reflux (which I could knew. lol), then also had a EGD scope and found a hiatal hernia. I'm working with my original surgeon of the sleeve, and he is telling me there are 2 options; to insert the LINX, or convert to a bypass, since that should remove the acid in the stomach. My insurance does not cover LINX as they deem it experimental, but would cover the bypass if medically necessary. Wondering for the people that had to convert to bypass due to GERD, what, if any, were your insurance requirements? Is it similar to the first surgery; office visits, nutritionist, etc? Just curious how long of a road this might be until I can have the bypass, or what I need to prepare for. Thanks for listening.
  13. I sent you a private message. Tomorrow is actually my revision surgery. From sleeve to bypass for Gerd.
  14. Loriey, you will hear people say weight loss is difficult after revision surgery. I didn't find that true AT ALL. I started at 240 and only got down to 160 with the band. Then after I had trouble with it I got back up to 200. Seven months ago I got my revision and I am now down to 140. I found it much easier to eat small meals with the bypass than with the band. With the band, if the first bite didn't land just right in the pouch I'd feel nauseous and NEVER had that "ahhhh...I'm perfectly full" feeling. With the bypass there is NEVER that sickly lap band full feeling. It's just a nice "That's just right" feeling of fullness.
  15. I lost 60 lbs with the lap band, have slowly regained approximately 20 - 25 lbs. I am 5'4", I went from 225 lbs down to 165 and I felt fantastic and very happy at that weight. With the regain I am now around 190. I am hoping gastric bypass will get me back down to 165-160. What is your weight loss after revision?
  16. Morning! What do you think? (Back story - sleeve 2015, revised to RNY due to GERD and two hernias. Revised 5/27/20, was fine and had a complication. “twisting” and had reflux.... vomiting bile and bowel 🤮 on 6/6. Opened up again 6/8. Lasted 2 days home from hospital and had to be revised 6/17. Moved first revision to mid intestines, surgeon claims. One scare Sunday night. Thinking I had a bad protein shake and vomitted but wasn’t the same Bile reflux.) My abdominal wall is on constant fire. I know it’ll get better. Being opened up 3x in 3-4 weeks isn’t fun! Same incisions too plus a few more. I cannot or don’t want too drink or eat. No desire... I know I have too. Horrible taste in my mouth. D Gross. Shakes are like death this time around. I used to love many different kinds. No way now. Popsicle ice pops repeat on me. Dye related maybe? What to do!? I have to get something in. Water has been an issue for me for years with the sleeve. Now I dont wanna touch it. Gatorade tastes 🤮 Hope everyone is well!!! 🙂
  17. I am being revised Band to Bypass and have been dreading the pre-op diet. I was 3 days out when all elective surgeries got cancelled due to Covid. I had followed the diet well and was rescheduled. Date of the reschedule was coming up, was on the shakes and doing ok, only slipped once... again 3-4 days out was re-reschudled due to Covid. I am due to go in tomorrow. I really struggled this time, Firstly I missed the start day for the shakes (I work in government and between drought, fires and Covid I barely know what day it is), then I got in my head and have only successfully managed to do 4-5 days VLCD. The VLCD I was given was: Brekky: shake, Lunch: shake or bar + Salad, Dinner: Shake + Veg. My diet has been Brekky: Shake or bar (if I remember), Dinner: Salad. Im just super worried about starting late. I was 123kg a week ago, 117kg ealier in the week and 120kg this morning (that time of the month due tomorrow for my op - Yay for me) ... I just needed to get that off my chest as it's really been stressing me out
  18. I have been waking up with burning in my chest like before the revision and tonight I actually started feeling it and it went on for a few hours. I am still on my PPI and hoping it clears up over the next few months. Have you gotten any better ?

    Recovery from Sleeve to DS?

I am a revision patient from sleeve to modified DS. I haven’t read Wisconsin_Gals post but from my personal experience any strong odors or diarrhea is from my own bad behavior. If I’m playing by the rules I have neither. Good luck with your decision!

    Back on track

I saw some great responses. I agree it is possible to get the same results with no surgery. I definitely considered going the no revision route by just dieting correctly. Surgery doesn't make you lose weight. Your body loses weight if you eat healthy food with fewer calories. Problem is, we've failed at some point so any advantage you can get is a good thing. For me, the out of pocket cost of the surgery $5k isn't a factor since I eat meals at home or pack lunches now instead of take out. I'm eating less and the surgery pays for itself. The health benefits I can expect getting out of the Obesity class are worth it. If I can get off high blood pressure medication, avoid getting diabetes or needing a hip replacement, that's life changing. I'm 48 years old. I tell people I'm doing this to add years to my 70s.
  21. I got a sleeve 7 years ago. Lost a good amount of weight then gained a lot back. (326 to 209 to 300) Revised to DS one month ago. With the transition diet I started in January, Pre-OP and Post-OP diets, I've lost 78 lbs. I've seen stats on expected weight loss from a DS. It is 85 to 100% of your excess weight. If you follow nutritional guidelines, you'll get to a normal or overweight class. I've been told each operation triggers your body's response of a lack of hunger. Also, the required diet effectively reset my pouch. I'm feeling full after small meals. I used to be able to drink just about any amount of water. Now I feel limited even with water. This has made the weight loss quick and easy. I'm taking this revision as an opportunity to correct my past nutritional mistakes.
  22. You can lose weight but it will be up to you. It is not at all like the sleeve so be prepared. Today I am 1 month post op revised to bypass. I started at 180 my original goal weight and weigh 167.8 today. I would rather have my sleeve but it is what it is. I still have burning in the morning so at this point I still have GERD.
  23. I haven't had this done, but I'm guessing it might depend on whether or not you still have a lot of weight to lose. There are people who've had the sleeve who don't develop GERD until they're two or three years out, at which point they've already lost a lot of weight - so they may not have much more to lose (and don't....). I do know of someone on another forum, actually, who did lose a fair amount of weight after her revision - although I honestly don't know how common that is.

    Hair loss

this isn't the issue with the poster who originally wrote this, but i've heard of other people who've had it reversed because they decided to revise to a DS. The DS has a sleeved stomach - so they have to reverse the bypass, then do a sleeve, and then do the intestinal part of the DS. There are only a handful of surgeons who are really experienced in doing these RNY-to-DS conversions, and it's not common - so you don't often hear of people who'vee had this done, but they're out there...
  25. I would love to know too! I had the sleeve in 2017, developed GERD, and hiatal hernia. Surgeon recommends revision to bypass now to help with acid reflux and promote additional weight loss. *Question for you; what insurance requirements did you have to do for a revision to bypass?
