  1. I'm not calling anyone out on their morals. I could give 2 poops about someone's morals. This is not about morals, or convictions to drink. This is about the sheer medical facts and statistics of drinking soon after major surgery, and the risk of transfer addiction. I believe it's reckless and hazardous behavior not only to do this to your body early out from major surgery. And, you're right, whoever will only live ONCE, but there is NO reason to rush to the end of it. Many obese people self-medicate with food, no different than self-medicating with alcohol. If you've been around the forums long at all, done any amount of research, you take away a fat person's ability to eat, the risk for a transfer addiction is quadrupled. It's called educating someone, not judging, nor worrying about someone's moral compass. I care more about what this poster is doing to their body and that others might follow suit because of this one experience. It's detrimental to the liver to drink this early out. Bottom line, it's ridiculous and absurd.
  2. I don't think it's ganging up if everyone is saying that it's not healthy. The fact is, it's *not* healthy. I don't think you'll be able to find a doctor that would say drinking alcohol 2 weeks after a major surgery is healthy. You're right, there is no need for name calling, but it is not absurd to be appalled by the question. If I came in the forum and asked "Hey, what do you guys think, would it be okay if I eat a gallon of ice cream?" I would expect all the answers to be similar to the ones posted in this thread. The fact is, it's just downright unhealthy and it's a big risk to take so soon after a major surgery. You're right, we do only live once, so we need to take care of the bodies that we have, because we only get one. Yes, it is okay to drink on occasion and have a party, but the best way to do that *responsibly* would be to wait until more time has passed after such a major surgery. If you and gdc choose to abuse your new sleeve that you have been fortunate enough to have, that is indeed your decision, but you can't come into a support group (which is geared toward encouraging each other to be healthier) and expect praise and worship for abusing your sleeve. *steps down off soapbox*
  3. Hi Need to know if anyone drank when they were approximately 2 weeks+ out from surgery date... (drank .. alcohol)? What will happen if I do? What damage can it cause? Only my stomach was removed, so I dont think it will have any effect as my liver and everything else is still exactly the same as before... Im going to a convention and will want to party it up for sure... so wondering if I will be able to drink? Does having a smaller stomach effect how I handle alcohol now? BTW, i dont really drink beer or wine, I mostly stick to vodka/gin.
  4. Sugar alcohols will do it, and not in a good way. That being said, I have a confession to make. A few years back while I still was still working, I used to keep a jar of jelly Beans on my desk. This one man that worked in the office was not only a jerk but pretty much cleaned out my jar each week. I enjoyed people helping them selves but most people would take a few but this guy would take huge handfuls and put some in his shirt pocket for later.I let him know one time that he was welcome to bring in a bag every once in a while to fill the kitty. He looked at me and said "why would I do that when you will do it?" Wrong thing to say to me. Next day, I went and bought 3 bags of the sugarfree jelly belly beans. It says on the bag not to eat more than a few because of the of the high content of sugar alcohols in them. He was all over them by 9am. I made sure I got up and left my desk area when I saw him coming. The warning on the bag is true. That's all I'm saying. To add to my delight, I let him know after the fact that those were sugarfree. He never ate another one of my jellybeans.

    Calling all A11s!!

Hi all- I am a ER nurse and I have access many ports in my career and hand sanitizer is not a normal standard of care- Every healthcare professional who is giving you a fill should use cloraprepp which is a clear soap (alot like rubbing alcohol) or iodine. The hand sanitizer is weird and puts you at risk for an infection in my opinion. So on that not I would tell you to speak up, if you think what they are doing is not right ask questions. Now I will get off that soap box, I haven't posted much since my surgery but I love reading everyones input, I feel great now, I too, struggle with my diet at times, I am just trying really hard to stay positive and active. I am running a half marathon next weekend and I haven't done that for a few years, I am having a great time training, and I love that my body doesn't hurt all the time. Thanks for all of your positive energy and GG thanks for your recipes, I'm excited to try the chile. I think my kids would love it. I have been eating a lot of beans and legumes for there protein power. I hope all is well- stay strong all you A11's

  7. VST is a forum for vertical sleeve weight loss surgery support. Those who have had the surgery, and those who are family, friends, and supporters of them are also welcome to come here, participate, learn, educate and be educated. Often, those who have never experienced being morbidly obese truly don't understand what it means to those of us who are, or what we have been through, both physically and mentally. They tend to be more sympathetic to the person who has an addiction to alcohol, smoking, or drugs. But the difference is, nobody needs alcohol, drugs or cigarettes to live, but we do need food to live. And, that alone makes our struggle that much harder. Momto6ix, in order for Rick to succeed, you need to be on his side, loving him and supporting him 100% of the way. I do applaud you for asking what foods are best to make for the party, and being sympathetic to his needs. Please refer to our food and nutrition forums at http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/forum/7-food-nutrition/ for some great ideas on what you can cook and he can eat. He is going through a lot of changes right now, physically and emotionally. If, at this juncture in his journey he doesn't feel ready to face certain situations, then respect that and support him. He has to learn how to handle the different situations he is going to encounter in the future, and he will. But right now, he is still new to all of this. Allow him the time he needs to adjust to changing his eating habits, learning to exercise, dealing with the changes his body is going through, etc. Also, keep in mind when your body is going through such drastic changes, you also have a lot of crazy hormonal/chemical changes going on. Eventually, it will all level out. He will learn how to deal with social situations where food is involved and he will be ready to start going out and living life again. Just don't expect it to all happen overnight. Lastly, everyone please remember our forum rules, primarily the one which refers to everyone being respectful of one another. We are all here to both learn and educate. The attacks are unnecessary.
  8. it's a serious question as I try to live with someone who had this surgery. it does seem to me that many of the things I see and read on here, apply to any diet. isn't this surgery "tool" really nothing more then a diet? what is the difference? what is it that having major surgery does to your way of thinking, that just going on AND STAYING with a diet not do? I read on here that you've changed your way of thinking, the foods you eat, you give up carbs, alcohol & diet soda. you're willing to exercise. all of these things you'll do now, whereas before you wouldn't. you call no WL a stall, where as any diet calls it a plateau. what is the difference in your way of thinking, that changes because you had surgery?

Homosexual Liberal Atheists ~ What's UP with that?

Religion is MANmade. Spirituality is totally different. As far as porn, it can REALLY enhance a couple's sex life. My hubby travels and when he is on the road I encourage it. There are free sights out there and it doesn't cost us a dime. When in the mood.. I LOVE the stuff. I know plenty of other females that like it as well.. so different STROKES for different folks.. no pun intended. I don't think it should be outlawed but I don't have a problem with paying higher taxes on stuff like porn, smokes and alcohol. T Porn grosses more money that legit movies, so who is watching all the porn? Could it be that most Christians and MANY females are liars?

    Erosion of the lap band

Stomach erosion is something rare but can happen. It can happen for many different reasons. There are factors like alcohol, spicy food, bad eating habits ( not following doctors orders), nick during surgery, rapid fills, large fills etc that can cause stomach erosion. If your erosion is very small then your doc might unfill you, put you on meds for a few weeks and then check your stomach again. If the hole in your stomach healed a lot then a simple stitch can be placed to fix the problem thus not needing to remove the band. There is no perfect and exact way that all doctors remove the band. When I had my band removed my doc removed it laparoscopically the same way it was put in. He used the same incisions too. I know that if the erosion is bad and way into your stomach then the doctor can remove the band endoscopically ( going down your throat and cutting the band in half inside your stomach) and laparoscopically ( pulling the band out ). All docs are different though. If your getting your band removed you can ask him how it is done. This is just what I know my doc does

    April Dates

I gave up caffeine at the very beginning of my appts. 6 months ago. I was addicted and figured that if I gave it up right away, I would have an easier time later on. I drink crystal light now. Have had a few drinks of soda and found that I don't miss it. I also haven't had any alcohol in about 3 months. I was a pretty big drinker on weekends, so I thought it would be better if I cut that out as well.
  12. I liked the post. You made some great points. I did hear a story about someone through my surgical group who ate a chip the day after surgery who did open her stomach and cause complications. So I don't know that it's 100% accurate what you said. Also in respect to caffine or alcohol... I know there is a medical reason and that is while your new stomach is forming you don't want to cause ulcers. But maybe the length of times can be exagerated sometimes. My NUT said to wait a month while my surgeon said to wait only 2 weeks. Friday is my 2 week mark and I am seeing my surgeon that day. I am excited to have my first coffee on that day and I am doing my part by waiting until then. -Joe M.

    Mushy Food Ideas Wanted

I just returned from a cruise and came home 1/2 pound lighter than when I left! It was a little frustrating at times - cruises are known for their good food, in abundance! The good thing about it is that the portions are not huge so you can order a few courses and eat a bit of each and not overdo it. I'd order salad and an entree at dinner (when everyone else ordered appetizers and soup besides) and only eat a few bites of each (I'm really tight, had a fill just before I left - I wanted to be tight, I know that's weird but I couldn't bear the thought of gaining anything) I ordered dessert almost every night at dinner and still lost that 1/2 pound. Some tips: I took the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible. I walked a lot on shore excursions (I tried to choose ones that I knew involved lots of activity) I didn't drink calories - I know that's really hard for some people, but I'm not a huge drinker so not having alcohol wasn't that huge a deal for me - I'd rather have ice cream than a margarita. I drank water. I didn't eat anything between meals (that wasn't that hard - I ate enough at meals that I wasn't hungry between meals, half the time I wasn't hungry when I sat down to a meal either!) Have fun on your cruise!

    Club Soda ?? Off topic

Um, probably becuase she LIKES it? Why do you assume there would be any other reason? I really like club soda and ice as a drink. I vastly prefer it over still Water. Its also great half half with white wine to reduce your calorie and alcohol intake. I can handle carbonation fine though and my doctor doesnt believe it needs to be avoided.

You know you are a bandster when....

You know you're a bandster when.... ...you consume a case of Water in a few days rather then a case of soda ...you are so use to eating so fast that you are done with ur entire meal before anyone else even gets started, but now you are still on your soap while they are finishing their entree ...you are drinking water at the bar and acting as if it's a gin and tonic so no one knows you aren't drinking alcohol ...everyday people ask, "so how much is it now?"((as in how much weight have you lost))
  18. Great thread! Thanks to all for your transparency on this topic. I wasn't a great over-eater -- just enough of an over-eater to gradually gain more and more weight. And, believe me, when you move less and less (as you get older) and you keep eating just a little more than you need you can pile on the pounds plenty fast enough. But back to the OP topic .... I travel a lot on business, and my work is very stressful (fun, but stressful). I loved nights alone in hotel rooms -- eating comfort food AND dessert. Burgers AND chocolate cake. Salmon, potatoes AND carrot cake. Steak AND ice cream. There's a real common thread here I recognize about eating alone and unobserved. Breaking rules. Behaving as though there are no consequences. It could have been worse, I suppose. No drugs. No alcohol to excess. No unsafe sex. Just chocolate cake and carrot cake.

Lucky #7 are still going strong !!!

I have been eating a lot of beans, but the doctor would REALLY like me eating real foods and not liquids. That was the entire reason I had this surgery! As for the sugar...HELL NO....I have not had anything that has sugar in it. I will see what it feels like to dump once I get to maintenance (which should be around the end of July/mid August). I will really only try to sugar (in the form of BBQ sauce and Teriyaki sauce) so I know what the start of it feels like in case I eat something at a restaurant and feel it coming on and stop eating. The closest I have come to dumping is getting a light headed feeling when I eat too much sugar alcohol. They really aren't joking when they say that your taste buds totally change when you have gastric bypass. I really have no desire to eat anything sweet. I have some sugar free fudgecicles but I don't eat them very often. SF Pudding makes me sick and sometimes even yogurt is too sweet. The only other way that I would eat (or attempt to eat) sugar is if I start getting too far below goal weight. The doctor is a little worried about that possibility seeing that I started out at such a low BMI for bypass. I am already halfway to goal and I am only one month out of surgery. I am starting to fit back into some of my clothes and had a really good run/walk this morning. I'm STARTING to feel like a normal human being again. Well it is be time...just wish this basketball game would hurry up and get over...with the Heat beating the Mavericks of course.

So sorry for all that!! Drugs/alcohol can sure mess up your life. Too bad it impacts the whole family. Yes, good advice, Steph. Earl slept a little better last night but I think he's taking way too much over the counter stuff plus some meds the neighbor gave him. He's got the a/c on.... not opening any windows since we got here. I hate being shut up like that. This early in the morning, I'd love the door open. And he's had the front window covered up since we got here, too.... big foil window thing plus curtains, so I can't see out except through his window! Took Zoey out last night though.. played catch for a while and visited a couple of neighbors who were outside that I hadn't had a chance to talk to yet. By the time we came back I had to turn on my headlights.

Good Afternoon Peeps Had boot camp this morning then funeral - then did a little shopping got this great bbq sauce from World Mart - Stockyard BBQ - OMG to die for - I know there is a Stockyard Restaurant in Dallas that's really famous I assume it's from there - going back tomorrow to buy a whole bunch - cuz it's hard to find good bbq sauce and when I find one I love - they quit making it.. So gotta stock up Candice - I don't think I have had rubbard.. Bannana nut bread - omg - that can't be a N American thing - how werid Linda - How' Mindy doing are you home yet Phyl - Wine really doesnt help your bp - I think it makes it worse really This is from the Mayo Clinic - I just wanted to make sure that Dr Janet was giving correct info Question Alcohol: Does it affect blood pressure? Does drinking alcohol affect your blood pressure? Answer from Sheldon G. Sheps, M.D. Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure to unhealthy levels. Having more than three drinks in one sitting temporarily increases your blood pressure, but repeated binge drinking can lead to long-term increases. Heavy drinkers who cut back to moderate drinking can lower their systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) by 2 to 4 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and their diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number in a blood pressure reading) by 1 to 2 mm Hg. If you have high blood pressure, avoid alcohol or drink alcohol only in moderation. Moderate drinking is generally considered to be: Two drinks a day for men younger than age 65 One drink a day for men age 65 and older One drink a day for women of any age A drink is 12 ounces (355 milliliters) of beer, 5 ounces (148 milliliters) of wine or 1.5 ounces (44 milliliters) of 80-proof distilled spirits. Keep in mind that alcohol contains calories and may contribute to unwanted weight gain — a risk factor for high blood pressure. Also, alcohol can interfere with the effectiveness and increase the side effects of some blood pressure medications. So gf sorry to say gf - you need to only have 1 period - they can give you meds for the bp - are they talking about changing it.. Exercise and getting some more weight off will help.. Hugs on that proceedure - you are in my prayer - but ya gotta limit salt too i think Well I am off to the couch for a while - cbl

Yes, I live in a neighborhood, but all my neighbors are in different places. One is a retired couple that don't even say hi when we are both outside, the other just moved in with little kids, across the street is a parent of an ex student, not a good idea. Remember our houses are at least an acre apart. The back neighbor is also a parent of an ex student. They both parents have issues either with alcohol or sleeping around. Again not something I want to get into. Made red beans and rice for dinner, new recipe, okay, Made it with turkey sausage.

  24. Thank you. I just ordered the last one on there cause it said no sugar alcohols. And saw they had orange breath mints too. That were the same. That I’m gonna get for my apron at work. Cause I always worry about my breath. Thank you so much. This sounds like a great fit. Fixes a craving why staying on track. They also have a ginger ale one I found. With actual ginger extract. So it might help the stomach. Without the soda and sugar. Thank you. I can’t say that enough.
  25. Interesting article. Basically supports what my thinking has been. I just wonder how long does the procedure have to be done before it is no longer referred to being "in it's infancy"? They state numbers referring to patients 6 years out, so, that would appear to me to be out of it's infancy ... But, I reached goal 8 months post and have been maintaining the same weight for over 2 years now. In the article, they state "failure" of a procedure if you have regained 22 pounds or more. That seems like a heavy statement because I have read on here many folks who have regained this and more, but were able to lose it again when they recommitted to comply with the basic guidelines. To me, that is not a procedural failure, but rather an issue with the patient's compliance. As far as why there is weight gain, the article states: There have been so many pissing matches on this forum with regards to the "cheating" question. I'm not going to get into that battle again. Just be ready to accept the consequences. It is difficult for me to support an alcoholic who won't stop drinking ... Bottom line, IMO, is that if I were to gain 30 pounds, it will be due to my "cheating" the sleeve, not the failure of the procedure. I also believe that if I were to return to rigorously following the guidelines, I would drop that 30 pounds. Does this point to a failure of the procedure?
