  1. My surgeon didn't tell me to go on pre-op diet either and I stressed reading all of those pre-op diet posts. My surgery is the 8th as well. I am doing 2 shakes a day a yogurt for a snack and a protein and salad, that's about it. I hope that I am doing the right things. I do know that after surgery I need to stay on the clear liquid diet. Good luck all!

    protein powder

Your weight loss is on target. No you do not need to eat whey based protein powders. The numbers for the one you like sound okay. The extreme fatigue may in part be due to not meeting your protein requirements. I used FAGE 0% greek yogurt to my protein shakes for an added protein boost. A half a cup will give you 65cal 5carbs 13gms protein and 5sugar. I would add it to my morning protein shake since I worked out first thing. It was a terrific protein boost and fueled my day. You do need to watch your carbs and sugar throughout the rest of the day, but this helped get me started and kept me going without fatigue. It also made it easier to meet my protein goals by the end of the day so I had more time to focus on getting in my water.
  3. Here I go...cover your ears: Woooooooohoooooooooooo! I am NOT alone in this BATTLE <<insert dramatic battle music>>. Fact: I have YET to get in 80g of Protein a day Fact: I must be a weirdo 'cuz I can't stand the protein drinks, shakes, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese slices, unflavored powder, skim milk Fact: I get about 30-60g of protein a day. And that's IF I totally focus on it. Fact: I LOATHE the word 'protein' Fact: I'm only a month post-op and I'm FREAKING OUT that I will be BALD Fact: Again, I'm only a month post-op and I'm FREAKING out losing muscle mass Dream: that someday, some scientist will invent a GOOD TASTING protein that I can take in 1 gulp...once a day. I suppose the closes to that is the Bullets. 42g of protein in 3.5 ounces. But...OH MY GOODNESS....try smelling those and tasting those. VOMIT!!!! I eat chicken. The only fish I like is blackened fish...but have you ever had spicy fish and not allowed to drink with your meal? ON FIRE!! Apparently, my taste buds no longer like tuna (LOVED it before). BUT....I do like Peanut Butter. Some of you can put a spoon in it and eat it like that. I can't. I need a cracker. So, I do that and get at least 5-6 protein with a TBS and 2 crackers. (and I love it) You're not alone.

    Question.....

Do you like Greek yogurt? That is a staple for me. I use it for at least one of my meals daily and it has lots of protein. I find eggs extremely filling. I couldn't eat them the first 6 months.

Where do I start? And with what?

The first thing I ate on purees was Greek yogurt with almond butter (breakfast) then pureed tuna salad (lunch) then ricotta bake (dinner). As you can see, each meal had more than one ingredient! No type of food ever gave me trouble. The important thing was to keep portions small (1.5 ounce max) and eat slowly with small bites. Good luck!

    diverticulitis and the band

I have diverticulities and spastic colon. Since getting the band I haven't had diarreah. In fact, just the opposite which is all new to me. Having a spastic colon I was used to having food "turn" on me and heading for the bathroom. I now eat an Activia, a type of yogurt, everyday. It helps keep you regular without having to take Fiber. You might want to give this a try. You must have had a diverticuli get infected and that is no fun. I try to stay away from foods that I know will cause me problems. Hope you are on the mend. PM me if you have any additional questions or concerns. Its something I've had for years, but the band only 7 weeks.

    What have I done?

I still have trouble with sugar. I eat alot of Splenda. I was told I should get off the splenda because it makes me crave other sugars also. I love to drink tea and thats what I put in it. I also drink Crystal Light and thats sweet. I also have yogurt often which is kinda sweet (the lowfat kind) so I have plenty of opertunity to get sweets including apples and sugar free jelllo. I am not sure I would know what to eat if I cut all of that out lol. Its all dietary sugar though although I admit I will swipe a piece of candy from my kids here and there if they have it around (Easter Sucks) So I do still crave it. Now the question is do I crave sugar because of how much artificial sugars are in my diet? I am guessing so. Any ideas?

    No Puree

I was on liquid for the first 3 days and then I have to do full liquid, including yogurts, puddings, etc, for FOUR weeks! Doesn't that sound too excessive? I saw my nutritionist today and told her that I tried a little bit of mashed potatoes, and she pretty much told me that I shouldn't start puree for another 2 weeks, despite my surgeon telling me that I cannot do any damage to the staples. I was sleeved on May 21st, by the way. I am also having such a problem getting in Protein. I heard a lot of people like the Premier Protein, chocolate flavor? Any suggestions? I have already spent so much money on different Protein shakes. I tried the isopure vanilla, which I hate (yuck), then I tried the isopure drinks, the fruit alpine, they were even worse, then I tried these coffee lattee flavored packets my nutritionist sold that I didn't like, and finally (today) I bought a pack of the pre-made shakes my nutritionist had in her office and they were good but they are expensive ($18 for 6!) and don't have as much protein as the premier, they only have 15g whereas the premier has 30g. Suggestions welcomed!!!

How Are All The May Sleevies Holding Up?

Egg salad?? I was sleeved on May 1 and haven't made it to the egg part yet... it's supposed to be week 4 for me! I'm eating apple sauce, yogurt, soups, tofu, sweet potato.... i can't do any of the protein shakes. GO BUY ISOPURE!! I like the pineapple/orange/banana. It's the ONLY protein drink that I can actually get down. I can't stand the taste of 100% whey protein isolate. But this stuff has it in it, don't know how they do it, but i can't taste it! And I've tried really hard to taste it!! It's a 20 oz bottle w/ 40 g of protein. One a day. And counts as 20oz liquid
  10. First, I would say don't beat yourself up. You really do have it in you to do this.... We all do! Second, stop drinking alcohol on the weekends. Especially 4-5 drinks. That is a lot of empty calories and heavy guilt. I completely understand the stressful job. I started carrying a cooler with me that has P3 Protein Snacks, Greek yogurt, Water and Protein shakes. If I get stuck or have forgotten to eat I have something healthy to fall back on. No matter the job, everyone is allowed breaks and meals. Is there a gym nearby you can join? Can you walk some steps or walk around the parking lot? Definitely log your food. I am absolutely overwhelmed with learning to eat a balanced diet, but like I said above, we can do this! We have it in us. The only other suggestion I can make is start over with a week of Clear liquids. Life is all about do-overs. I read somewhere once that we can't let failure define us, let getting back up and starting again and again and again and not giving up define us.
  11. I had my surgery on 8/8. went home on 8/9. I went back to work Friday 8/12/11 for a half day. then back full time on Monday 8/15/11. pretty tired, but I walk the stairs at work each day to the 5th floor and walk with my husband or kids each night. when I got my staples out on the 16th. I had lost 14 pounds since 8/4. I have not weighted myself again, though. I removed all the scales from my house years ago. I suppose I will go buy one tonight. I have been tracking all my food and exercising using the my fitness pal app. it yells at me in red telling me I am eating to few calories..... I am averaging 250 a day. protien drinks make me so sick. I try to drink 2 or 3 K2O, Protein waters a day and have managed to choke down greek yogurt each morning. I found little cans of chicken by swanson 3.5 oz . so I have that for lunch along with a sugar free Jello. For dinners most days I have Soup. 1/4 cup of french onion or tomato or squash. then I have a 1/4 cup a bit later of one of the NAKED fruit smoothie drinks, then I try to get a snack in before bed. for the last couple of nights I have been eating a tablespoon of cashew butter. (yummy). Finally went to the pool yesterday. felt so good just to float in the Water. I tried a bit of swimming but was feeling so tired that I only lasted 1 lap of the pool. Lately I feel SO tired, like I could fall asleep at my desk or in the middle of a movie or even church. I added B12 and Biotin to my morning suppliments. I hope that helps. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is anyone else feeling so tired? I also still have sharp pains in my largest incision site. I find myself holding that part of my abdomnin... odd. Where is everyone else? Thanks, Mel

  13. Im just following the doctors scheadule of food and liquids first 2 weeks was 4oz of liquids each hour. Today i began eating i had yogurt with applesauce was not even a 1/2 cup. Lunch was 1/4 cup hummis with 1/8 of brocoli and in between 16oz of protein shake and water. Dinner is babyfood with smashed coliflower. 14. I did 2 weeks if liquids. Today i am so excited for food. I got to have a little yogurt with apple sauce for breakfast. For lunch i had smashed brocoli wkth a little hummis. And in between i get protein shakes how does your body loose weight when i was on liquids i was loosing a pound a day now eating more wont it stop its progress?
  15. Overall, I'm feeling alright. I'm kind of learning the dos and don'ts for my body. I made the mistake of letting my brain be on autopilot just a little bit ago and tried to stand up from my chair without putting my hands on the armrests and pushing up - big mistake! I freaked for a second when I got an inch of the chair and fell back down with abdominal pain, but I think I just strained myself a bit and it's down to a normal level of pain now. Getting used to not being hungry is kind of strange. I was a big portion eater pre-surgery and now it's taking me about an hour to get down like 4oz of yogurt. It's different, but good. I'm having a bit of trouble getting all my Water in, but it's on my list of things to work on tomorrow =) How many appointments have you had so far? Do they have you on a pre-op diet?

Starting over with a complete unfill

Definitely sticking with liquids and yogurt as the most solid food I'm doing until I get to see her next week. Thank you for your kind words
  17. Hey all, I was at the grocery store today and came across a brand new Greek yogurt made by Yoplait! I've heard a lot of you talk about Greek yogurt because it's so high in protein and low in carbs and figured I would have to go to a specialty health market to find it. So I was surprised to find it and just thought I'd share. :thumbup1:

    The new girl

Im day 5 post op(banded monday). Last night was the first time I could drink a full 8 oz of the protein shake without feeling absolutely sick. Lol. I also weighed myself this am and am down 5 pounds since Monday. I do dream of eggs n cheese though but I trust there is a reason my dr has me on yogurt, shakes, amd soup for 2 weeks. I have been drinking water all day and walking.

    Must Defeat Grazing. Suggestions...?

Background: I ate "dinner" at 6 o clock (fish and yogurt). went to church. now i'm up to bat again at the plate-the dinner plate hahaha! not good. and now that it's night and i'm feeling blue i eat another even bigger dinner. I grew up as a grazer. I would eat a little here. Go Play. eat a little there. do my homework. eat some more. And it was all okay. I was a tiny kid/young adult that was healthy and hopeful. As I have gotten older this mode of eating has been slowly waging a war against my waistline. A little bit here and there has turned into a big problem. I guess now the major differance now is that my grazing portions have really increased...eat a lot here. eat a lot there. eat....eat....eat... Now for me grazing provides an opportunity to avoid responsibility for my food and my life. Grazing whenever I feel sad or upset helps me to avoid the problems in my life. Grazing also allows me to trump the food journal system. If I can't remember (or choose not to remember) what i ate because it was a bite here and there, then I can't write it down and feel bad about it. Food journalling makes me feel depressed. So I figure if I'm eating in weird patterns and ways I can somehow avoid the pain of accountability. I really don't know what else to say, other than I need help. Are there any other hardcore grazers out there? how did u face up to what you were actually eating. what rules or strategies did you use?

    Stricture

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I had surgery May 28th. SW 244, current weight 197. I am just struggling with getting enough protein and eating more solid foods. I am living on cottage cheese, string cheese, yogurt and fish.

    Anyone cheat on pre-op diet

my doctor allowed veggies too, but no yogurt or any of that. i could only use Protein shakes and 1 cup of veggies per day. so, it sounds like you have more options than I did. while you may lose weight on the pre-op, please try your best not to cheat on it again. you can make it 14 days and that is really the most difficult part (other than the 10 days of liquids only right after surgery, if your doctor makes you do that) if you are really having trouble sticking to the diet, you should contact your doctor and tell him. don't try to reason with yourself and give yourself permission to eat cheese or do anything that is not per the doctor. that is not a good way to go into this process. if you do that kind of reasoning now, believe me you will do that after you have healed and are ready to eat real food again. resolve now to do what you are supposed to do and stick to it as best as you can.
  22. Those sound like good options if you have a cooler to take them in. You could also take fruit, yogurt, cheese and crackers and salads in a cooler. I can eat bread still! So I can always take a sandwich. But I dont eat the crusts anymore, lol. I usually elect to pack some sort of crispbread with something like vegemite (I'm an Aussie!) or Peanut Butter or cheese and some fruit. Its easy, quick and quite filling and doesnt go too yuck out of the fridge.

    Unflavored Protein Powder.....

Now friends, I am an intelligent woman with a great job and education.....I'm saying this for a reason. I was reading some posts and thinking how am I going to manage pureed food AND get the liquid and protein in that I need daily. It is amazing how we now think of food wisely instead of carelessly did prior to being sleeved. Back to my being intelligent.....I read a post that talked about UNFLAVORED PROTEIN powder and how this fellow sleever put it into his/her soups and other items to ensure that s/he gets the protein needed per day without being overly concerned about filling up too quickly. This sleever puts it in his/her cream soups, puddings, and yogurts. So what does this have to do with being intelligent? Not once had this approach crossed my mind!!! It seems so simple and common sense like. LOL. Just posting this and having fun with it - just in case anyone else has the same concern or is having an issue getting in protein while eating soft or pureed foods.....UNFLAVORED PROTEIN!!! Thanks #1golfer, your post was right on time. Now I am going to take back this cookies and cream flavored powder and get an unflavored. ......the preceeding post was an "ah ha" moment that made my day!

    Unflavored Protein Powder.....

Update....I finally purchased the unflavored protein powder about a week ago and it has been GREAT. During my full liquid phase I added it to almost everything......I am hooked on the low fat cream of chicken and cream of potato soup. I started my soft foods today and added it to yogurt and pudding.....I could not tell a big difference at all. I bought the Isopure brand at my local vitamin shoppe....it was $42 and I was not happy about the price but now that I am using it, I am SO GLAD that I bought it. I even added it to my cottage cheese today....lol...hey - just upped the protein content! Oh yeah - the nutribullet - turns out this is a great investment. I love to cook .... so every morning I make a nutriblend "smoothie" and get to enjoy cutting a cucumber or apple etc to add to my blend. My favorite blend so far is with spinach, a slice of jalapeno, cucumber, and frozen fruit with no added suger....oh and apple juice - gotta put in a liquid to make it a smoothie!

    Getting in fluids...

Oh yeah Yoplait makes a Greek yogurt Popsicle bar that is awesome. 90 calories and 12 gms I believe of protein. Delicious caramel. I loved them. Might be an option to try. Good luck.
