    GB Stalls - 8mos out

First of all, there is no such thing as a "window of opportunity." There is no clock or deadline on weight loss surgery. The surgery is permanent. The surgery itself doesn't cause weight loss -- the surgery is a tool that helps you to eat less so you can lose weight. For most people, yes, the effect of the restriction wears off over time, so the first year or so is often called the "honeymoon period" because that's when it's easiest to lose weight due to low appetite and high restriction. But that doesn't mean that you can't lose any more weight after X months post-surgery. You have to build and maintain good habits during that honeymoon period so you can sustain the weight loss. It is a lifelong journey and if you get back into eating too much, you could regain the weight. Second, yes, weight loss normally slows down as you approach your maintenance weight. It's easy to lose 10 pounds when you have 100 pounds to lose, but much more difficult to lose the last 10 pounds (when you only have 10 extra pounds). This is partly because having excess weight results in burning more calories -- if you're carrying an extra 100 pounds, it just takes more energy (and thus burns more calories) to do anything. If you maintain a constant calorie intake -- say, 1800 calories per day -- you will lose weight quickly at 300 pounds but more slowly at 250 pounds, and eventually you'll get to an equilibrium (say, 200 pounds) where you are burning the same number of calories as you're eating, so your weight will stabilize. If you want to lose more weight after you reach that equilibrium, you'll either have to lower your calorie intake or increase your calorie burn by exercising more. Finally, my personal opinion is that people should not get hung up on a specific number on the scale. The non-scale measures of success are so much more important. If you are satisfied with your health and appearance at 222 pounds, there is no reason to worry that you are 2 pounds over the range that your surgeon estimated (which is almost certainly based on statistical outcomes, not a personalized assessment of you, specifically).

Weak Bariatric Vitamin Brands? Doesn't Make Sense...

I recently reconnected with an old friend who I hadn't talked to in years. I saw I picture of him that he'd posted on his social media and reached out. He's been a great resource in sharing his experiences having had RNY a little over two years ago; he's lost half his body weight, is no longer pre-diabetic and is completely off the hypertension meds he had been on for years prior. When we spoke about diet and supplements post-op, he said he'd been told by his team to take prenatal multivitamins. He takes two Equate (Walmart house brand) Prenatal Multivitamins each morning and for the past two years since his surgery, his bloodwork numbers have been perfect.

    No appetite

Oh yeah, it’s common. I didn’t have an appetite for months. It probably came back before my hunger did but having no appetite or hunger helped me start to look at food differently: as a source of necessary nutrition. That whole eating to live not living to eat thinking became true for me. So even if I wasn’t really hungry or interested I eating I knew I had to eat something that was nutritionally dense. There were times I just ate the protein component of my meal. I also starting to eat to a routine which I continue to follow most of the time 4 years out. If it’s not a meal or snack time I don’t eat. Now, I’ll happily drop a snack if I’m not hungry because my meals are much larger & are more nutritionally balanced than they were when I was losing weight. My enjoyment of food hasn’t changed (still look forward to marks, dining out, eating socially). It’s more that there are foods I value more & enjoy eating more now & others I just don’t want to eat.

I took a laxative and miralax and I pooped! Im afraid to weight myself though. I feel like if the scale does t say I’ve lost I may spiral again. I have pcos so I’m wondering if that or something else could be making me retain fluid? I have an appointment on Monday with my pcp and I’m gonna ask her what she thinks. Thank you for the suggestions. I’m gonna try miralax daily and hopefully that will help.

    No appetite

pretty common - and take full advantage of this "feature", because for almost all of us, hunger and appetite come roaring back sometime within the first year post-op. I know this may sound strange to you, but...I wish my hunger and appetite had never come back. It came back at five months post op. It was so much easier to lose weight when I was never hungry and didn't give a flip about food. So, I know it sounds weird to say, but enjoy it while it lasts!

    Rice and noodles

I also agree with everyone above. Leave out the pasta and rice, bread, pita etc and you will have more success on your weight loss journey. All of those are a hard no for me simply because they are not good for us. Plus if you eat them often, your body will crave them.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Kinda taking the summer off. I'm getting ready to ramp up again in about 2 weeks. My kids will both be off to their respective colleges and school will begin for my wife. This summer has been a lot of traveling, beer and kayaking... my new favorite sport. I'm dealing with the worst case of poison ivy in my life right now, so hopefully that will get better in the next 2 weeks as well and I can start the late summer early fall push for fitness again. I see a new 90 day challenge in my future. Weight wise, 258... so about 7 lbs from my lowest point. Not terrible given the lack of focus. See y'all again soon!

    Anyone starting out around 225lbs?

I am 54 years old and 5'1''. My starting weight was 230. I'm currently at 175.9. My surgery was 4 months ago. My goal weight is listed as 140 because that is what my nutritionist said i would likely get to. i would like to get down to 120-130 but i am being realistic and setting the goal for 140 and then we will see what happens!
  12. It takes the stomach 6 months to totally heal. That being said, we dont have a lifting restriction for 6 months but i would definitely check with your surgeon and let him/her know the amount of weight you are lifting a day so they can let you know if you are over doing it at this point in your recovery.

    GB Stalls - 8mos out

My weight loss dramatically slowed down by month 8, but I did lose a little more. My body was done by month 11, and I was happy with where I landed. Keep pushing until you reach the 12 mo mark, if you can. I bet you have at least another 5-10 pound loss ahead of you. That said, when your body is done, it's done.

Gained two pounds? Are you pooping less than normal? Maybe you need to poop? I haven’t gone up or stayed the same yet. I wonder why you gained 🤔 I did read that on another post about not weighing yourself all the time but to measure because you may be starting to lose inches for right now instead. And it’s hard not to weight yourself everyday. You want to see progress. I feel the same way. I totally get it. But it will make you crazy. Choose peace my love. Lord I took a water pill and ozempic prior to surgery and was told to stop taking it. I would check with your doctor before restarting anything because of how your new body may react to it. It could make your pressure to low and have you pass out somewhere. Something weird. Be careful dear. I’ve also been walking a lil over two miles every other day. Are you exercising yet? Maybe this will help sweat out the excess water weight you think you have? Good luck on our new adventures dear. We are gonna be alright. 🤗

    Gastric bypass RNY 7/24/23

I’m down 13 pounds. It was 15, but somehow I’ve put on 2 pounds. I spoke to my surgeon and he said he didn’t want me to weigh myself at all because what’s happening now is not indivisible of the next few months. But I can’t not weight myself. I’m also stayed on the liquid diet as well through the purée stage. I’m now on soft foods. I had soft scrambled egg yesterday and it was fine. No issues. I’m so constipated though. And I worry maybe I’m retaining fluid. I was on a fluid pill for years before surgery. I feel like I need to go back on that or something. Idk. I’m a mess. but I’m glad to hear your doing well 🩷

I’m finding out that i no longer love food the way I use to anymore. I just flat out don’t enjoy it as much as I really use to. Kinda annoys me a lil bit. Maybe it’s because of the purée stage. Maybe it will get better during the soft food stage. At this point I’d rather go back to liquid tbh. Idk. Just my opinion. As for weight loss I’m doing ok and I enjoy exercising now. So far just walking. Compression on my tummy makes me feel better too because my tummy feels like jello or pudding lol I like to be out all together in my opinion. I’m down 25lbs post op. If I add the 2 week liver reduction diet weight loss a total of 34lbs. How about you?
  18. So great that you're tracking your body fat. I have done three body fat DEXA scans. I was down to 18% when I hit my goal weight. I wish I had started earlier so I knew what my baseline was.
  19. How heavy is your heavy lifting? Check with your team & ask for a weight limit so you can better gauge whether you can do your assigned work. You may be fine or you may be to do some of the lifting i.e. the lighter items that fit within your limits. Better to be safe than pull your internal wounds where you’re still healing.
  20. Before I lost the weight, I cringed any time I saw a camera and lived in fear of photos being posted online. Now, I'm like, take all the pictures you want. I'm constantly posting selfies and pictures of myself with others online. It's so much fun. One of my favorite NSV.

    Regrets

I'm sorry things feel so rough right now. It seems most people regret these operations at first because recovery is so miserable. But eventually things even out and the feeling eases and the weight loss starts. Please be gentle with yourself right now. Anesthesia can cause depression and takes a long time to work its way out of the system. Plus, your hormones are all over the place and that alone can make you depressed and weepy! I agree with Lindsay, find someone you can talk to who can hear you out without being judgmental. Sometimes we need to get all that panic and fear out in the open so we can breathe a little. You feeling this way right now is perfectly normal... Take it one moment at a time and try to find something that will make you smile each day. When I had cancer I spent part of my recovery coloring in adult coloring books! Coloring in big, bold swear words was cathartic. 🤣

    GB Stalls - 8mos out

stalls became more frequent the further out I got. And they tended to last longer, too. Every time I'd hit one, I'd think "well, this must be it...", but then my weight loss would eventually start up again. I kept losing until about the two year mark. It was slow going after the first year, though.

    Weight loss shots

Absolutely.Especially those who are under 30 bmi (or 27 with co morbidities to qualify). I have friends who were 10lbs overweight and never obese asking me how to get it and I told them frankly that they do not need it. Especially Ozempic. There is the weight loss version now but I agree Ozempic should be reserved for diabetics or at most pre diabetics. That is why insurance is requiring a diabetes diagnosis now to get Ozempic. It helped me avert diabetes so I no longer get it and trying other methods. But if I fail I have no qualms about trying to get Wegovy if I qualify which is for obesity.
  24. Hey everyone. Question for those greater than 8mos out. Is there a stall period with Gastric Bypass before your 12-18mos window of opportunity or was weight loss consistent with a slowing down period? I’m 8mos out and the weightloss has slowed down. I’m actually happy at this weight, 70lb loss and 5’11. But wondering if I should expect more weightloss through the 12mos period? My surgeon stated that he expected me to be around 205-220 as a good weight. I’m currently at 222. Any information is appreciated
  25. My surgeon told me I was okay to start doing heavier weight lifting at four weeks. Obviously, I would stick as closely as possible to what your doctor said though.
