Supporting a partner after the operation
MowryRocks replied to Hislassie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For me it was about being as normal as possible. I never had mood swings. One thing that you can do that was a huge help to me was just understanding that life is different in some ways. Sometimes in the beginning, we overthink, and over-complicate things...just be patient. If we were out and about, I would carry a cooler pack that had food and drink options for me in case we were in a position that we were out and I needed to push protein or felt hungry. (They told me I wouldn't feel hunger. I call BS on this, I have felt hunger since 2 weeks out.) Let your partner guide the recovery. Just being supportive may be all it amounts too. I never had a breakdown over food or anything. Just prepare yourself for the life that is going to be coming. In less than a year, I have changed from bump on a log status to go go go go go. It's a wild, amazing ride. Try to enjoy it together, -

It can happen. Make sure you are using BC until your body settles down. Enjoy the ride. -
So i have Florida blue bc/bs. Found out they DO NOT cover wls unless the doctor sends pprwrk saying its medically necessary along with proof and THEN they will review and decide. I asked if there were any other requirements and they said no. Ive already started the prerequisite appointments and have appointments scheduled into December 2016. What do i do? I don't want to go through all of this, just to be denied the actual surgery! My first appointment with nutrition is December 15th, then sleep study December 22nd! Should i talk to the surgeon? What proof are they wanting other than previous attempts at weight loss? Comorbidities? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Just found out Insurance denied my request
ElfiePoo replied to junbug178's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't lose hope. With a BMI of 48, they cannot reasonably state it is not a medical necessity. Perhaps there's an error in the records your doctor sent...like they recorded the weight wrong. Rather than call the doctor, I'd call BC and ask them how they can justify it as not 'medically necessary' because the doctors will only be able to tell you what the insurance told them. Go to the source. . -

Migraine or headache, how do you you tell the difference?
DonnaB replied to Constance's topic in The Lounge
Yep, I agree with everyone else - sounds like migraine to me too. The best OTC med I've used for them is Exedrin Migraine - here's the problem, Exedrin is part of the ANCID group of medications which lap bandsters are supposed to avoid. They're hard on the stomach and so are hard on your esophagus and the band. My doctor said taking these meds OCCASIONALLY is OK, you just have to watch how frequently they're used. When I feel a migraine coming on, if I take the Exedrin Migraine quickly enough I can avoid the headache or (more often) extremely suppress it so it isn't as painful or doesn't last as long. With a bad headache, I too have to retreat to a darkened room and lie PERFECTLY still, sometimes for as much as 12 - 24 hours. And then, as if it wasn't bad enough to lose one day to a migraine, I get what I call a 'phantom or shadow headache' the next day. It's not really a headache, but my head doesn't feel quite right, almost like a hangover, but not. I know - how vague and unhelpful can I be here? Sorry. I'm not sure of the chemical make-up of BC powder so I'm not sure if it's an ANCID or not, but you should find out before you start using it. I HAVE heard from several people that BC Powder works well for migraines, but they also say you have to be careful when you take it or you can inhale a bit of the powder as you pour it on your tongue. It makes you cough like crazy and gives you a scratchy throat when it happens. Just a heads-up on taking BCP. Sorry you're having headaches - migraine or not. You really should see a doctor just to be sure there isn't something else going on there. -

If You Had The Choice - Would You Do It Again?
laurar1husband replied to Babysteppin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely NOT, glad to hear all the success stories keep up good work, but there is no way I would do this to myself nor my family if I had it to do again. Ok I am 41 3kids and married. 5'4 286# was my highest weight had surgery july 24th tired all the time, cant sleep except flat on my bk. Living in fear what to eat what to drink, worry more about food than I ever have, gas only have 1bm a week. Scared to enjoy myself outside bc leaks n infections, scared to be intimate with spouse besides no sdrive. Skin dry had to go to er heart problems never had heart problems before. No if loosing weight was going to make me miserable and suck all enjoyment out of living. I would rather be fat and happy. N yes I was happy. I had the surgery bc I wanted to be healthy an enjoy life more. All I had was migraines, guess what I still do. Plus heart issues only since surgery. Each person has their on opinion, this is just mine. My mother was considering it I said no. I will walk with her cook for her, join gym with her just plz no. so yes I have lost 40# but there is no other up side for me. So be sure to consider all options and whatever your choice is it is the rest of your life.. Good luck. -
I hate not drinking while I eat.
Mississippi Girl replied to karinbuck's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i wil have to agree…..not drinking while eating is the hardest part of this whole journey. i guess it's because i really don't understand what the big deal about it is. i just had my sleeve done 3/10. i don't think i'm getting enough Water bc scales really aren't moving so much. i am certainly not eating too much. i don't know what the deal is. any advice? -
Have you contacted your doctor? It sounds like you could have a structure or something. I would focus on the water, for sure. And if you can get water down, try the watery protein RTD drinks. Isopure, I think? It's like Gatorade consistency (basically water) but has protein. One of the sleevers in my local support group said a few weeks ago that he switched to a straw (after consulting the NUT) bc sipping was actually harder to get fluids down & that he had a much easier time with water ever since. Definitely get the protein in however you can. If it's via cheese, then so be it. Just keep an eye on calories.

Awful smelling stool and gas
Postop replied to Pamela Raab Campbell's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
What are you eating? Simple carbs? They tend to make stool and gas smell much worse. I use this for the bathroom. It's great. I carry a spray vial of perfume in my back pants pocket to spray my butt, so if I have gas the smell doesn't linger in my pants. But I almost never have it in public bc I don't eat simple carbs during the day as I don't eat them till I get home. If your family doesn't like the smell, I hope they knew what they were signing up for. TDS 2005 -
Week 2: May 27-31st Sleevers
tiredtwinmommy replied to lylabelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well here are my stats as of this am: Start weight was 189 ( that is as I was doing my preop diet) May 29 surgery weight was 183 Weight today is 171 NSV I can now wear my engagement and claddaugh rings hubby gave me when we were married 17 and a half years ago. I am fitting into smaller clothes in my closet. Challenges: it is tough when my family is eating all these tempting smelling things around me. But I have not given in and I will not give in bc I know this is head hunger, plus I am scared to pieces of leaks! I am basically having my protein shakes water and sf Popsicles during the day. I have tried stuff a little more "substantial" like puréed beans sf pudding and low carb yogurt, but gurgulina (my sleeves name) sings and complains for quote a while afterward so I get scared I am pushing it too soon. -
I have not received any bills and I'm 8 weeks post op today! My insurance is BC/BS.

I Wish Someone Had Told Me....
peacequeen replied to ShouldBlittler's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I knew a leak was a very small possibility. We never want it to be us but it can happen. I wish I had known more about leaks and the process of healing from one. 2 weeks in the hospital, 3 weeks on tpn (this means no food or liquids,,you are fed by a picc line)..which is also not so comfortable. I wish I knew that once my leak was healed that I would have to start back to square one where my diet was concerned,,at 4 weeks out from surgery,,I was back to clear liquids then full liquids,,mushies,,etc. I wish I knew you can/more than likely will gain weight on tpn,,I had lost 24 pounds on my pre op and 1 week after surgery combined..but then on tpn I gained back 13 pounds. So when I say back to square one not only diet but trying to get that weight back off was a little disheartening. I have 3 pounds to go where I had left off and I had surgery on Dec 27th. I wish I had known that eating normal food would be hard to get down and keep down (probably not for everyone but it happens often enough). All that said..I am now at the point that I can say I am glad I had this surgery. As for what people say about having surgery, you have to look at your reasons for having it and weigh if it's more important than what people think of you having it,,you'll get your answer and not care what people think,,if that makes sense -

Approvals with BCBS Federal
RNYDawn replied to rln52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im sorry if this is addressed elsewhere but would someone walk me through their steps? Did you just call the surgeon's office for a first appointment and go from there? I have BCBS fed and I'm so thankful! -
I was submitted to (bcbs fed) insurance for approval on Sept 8, they told me it could take up to 3 weeks. They won't schedule my surgery until I am approved, and are vague about how far out they are scheduling. So I feel like I am in limbo with making any plans at all for the next couple months until I know when exactly this is happening.

Approvals with BCBS Federal
Faytona replied to rln52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a lapband revision. BCBS Fed approved my lapband in 2/2011, port replacement in 3/2013, and lapband removal 11/2013. I just got approved to have the sleeve (surgery scheduled for March 14!!). However, I did have to go through the 3 month supervised diet, psych eval, and all pre-op tests again. I just got my surgery date!! March 14. . Any news, NewLife? Approvals with BCBS Federal
babbs2299 replied to rln52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so a question for you all. With my BCBC Fed I'm required to fill out this sheet for "NON-MEDICALLY SUPERVISED DIET HISTORY". It has a long list of different diets starting from weight watchers going all the way down to "other". Says to fill out what year, how long, weight loss and weight regain. Has anyone else had this exact same piece of paper to fill out? I'm worried if I'm completely honest it will give them a reason to deny the claim or some other crazy thing. I don't want to over do it either. I've tried at least half of the ones on the sheet and sometimes more than once. Any secrets to making it look good for approval purposes? -
Approvals with BCBS Federal
PlBren replied to rln52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just found out that my doctors office still hasn't submitted my paperwork to BC/BS Fed yet - and it has been 11 days since my last visit and everything was ready to go then! Ugh. If the insurance company doesn't get back to me in a week or less, I'm going to have to change my whole schedule around because I was counting on a Aug 27th surgery date. -
Help! The Mother Is Coming! <Cue Jaws Music>
Madam Reverie replied to Madam Reverie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's why I 'pre-fed' the line about suffering GERD. This was further corroborated when I went to Ireland recently and said to my Uncle (who speaks to my mother every day without fail) 'Oh, look, you're on the same tablets as me for GERD- omeprazole'.. THAT would have gone back that evening. My cover story is in place -
Ask her why she feels the need to be negative? It's not very "friend-like". I would call her out. I would tell her that everyone is different and you do not plan on gaining your weight back. Bad things do happen but it's a hard process. Maybe even emphasize that clearly it's not an easy way to lose weight especially when she supposedly knows so many people who have regained. That should prove to her how hard it actually is and she should be supportive not negative. That's all I got. I haven't told anyone else bc of exactly this. I would've ripped her a new one but that's just me. Don't be me. She should feel privileged to have been trusted with the details of your surgery. Sorry you're having to deal with this! Good luck!

I Have Lost All Focus Completely.... :(
Jessica89 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The past 2 weeks have been so hard! I haven't had surgery yet it isn't until september or october but I am trying to stay on track with weight loss and working out and I've been cheating several times ....like last night I went out and got a huge ice cream Sunday and felt horrible afterwards. I feel like a failure. My husband has been laid off here and there for about 2 to 3 days a week for the past 2 months and it has been very stressful. I decided to let my gym membership go because I couldn't afford to pay for it anymore. I have a horrible problem with binge eating. I use to be bullemic (sp) a long time ago and every now and then I binge eat and want to do it again...obviosuly I don't bc I know its not the right thing to do or healthy. I just keep wondering if I can really make these changes and do this. Im feeling kind of lost and sad lately. Has anyone felt like this before surgery? Idk maybe its because it is still so far away that im feeling this way. I just want to be able to change my life. Im only 22 ...I have alot of years ahead of me...hopefully. I just wanna live my life and be able to do more things with my 4 yr old daughter. I need some advice Sent from my Verizon DROID3 using RNYTalk
