  1. Hi! I’m 52, just had my gastric sleeve a few days ago on 10/20/21. I had uterine cancer at the beginning on 2021 and had a hysterectomy in March that cured that but did put me into sudden menopause. Currently I’m just dealing with the pain and trying to ingest enough water and protein, much harder that I thought. Also put on a few pounds with the surgery so I’m waiting to see the numbers on the scale start to go down.

    What Was Your Biggest Challenge

This thoughtful and honest post was so helpful to me! I just had surgery on 10/11/21 and am writing down these points and keeping them on my fridge. Thank you for posting this 😀

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hi all! I am so thrilled to see so many replies to this topic! I got so busy pre-op that I haven't been able to post until now. I hope everyone who has already had their surgery is doing great and wish everyone good luck who will have the surgery soon! I had my surgery on October 11th. Everything went very well. I stayed in the hospital overnight. My only complaint was on the first night when I was experiencing pain where the incisions were (now the incisions are just unbearably itchy because they are healing). I wasn't hungry AT ALL for the first week or so and had a hard time getting all my water and protein in. This last week, however, I have been a bit hungrier and have been making some protein smoothies which have been really good for me I think. I just posted this in a separate thread, but I am terribly worried because I am feeling no constriction at all during this liquid phase. I start soft/pureed foods on 10/25 so I'm hoping I'll feel the constriction. Also experiencing what I think is head hunger rather than real hunger. Again, wish everyone the best!

    What Was Your Biggest Challenge

I was excited/nervous about the bypass on 10/5/21. Initially I was ok. Surgery was good, sent home on track. Walking and working the discharge orders successfully. 10/10/21 back in the hospital with a bowel blockage after taking the suggested Metamucil. It gels and potentially can cause blockages. Another surgery, NG tube, and 6 days in the icu I was terrified. I am a mom, I was doing this to be better for myself and my family but I suddenly feared the choice I made could possibly have taken me from them. After coming home I have had challenges with intake, collapsed lung, incision infection, and the loss of control in bm’s . I researched this for 10 years and ignored my fear because I would read so very many success stories and think I was being over dramatic or paranoid. Although I will say my last 3 days have been better, infection seems to be doing better, lung better, fever gone and increased intake on fluids. This is definitely a life decision that can not just effect you but your family, and your mental state. Be sure, talk with your loved ones and your doctor. The most emotional moments have been during my struggles in the hospital, pain, missing my family, fear the wonderful, caring nurses that really supported me so that I could get back home to them.

    Male Tummy Tuck Thread

3 week post-op update: 1. I used narcotic pain meds for the first 4 days post op, then alternated Tylenol and Ibuprofen until 3 weeks post-op. I likely didn't need the meds after week 2, but that was my doctor's recommendation. 2. My drains were quite active for 2 1/2 weeks, and didn't come out until 3 weeks post-op. The surgeon originally told me 7-10 days, so I wasn't mentally prepared for 3 weeks. I understand that the drains take fluid off faster than your body could absorb it and see the value. But they were painful more often than not (pulling against the stitch that held them in place) and I was happy when they were removed. Well, not happy during the removal (that hurt like crazy, but subsided within an hour or so). 3. I can walk very nearly upright and am working to stretch to fully upright, shoulders back. No real pain, just tightness at this point. 4. My incisions are healing nicely and the surgical glue has come off. I moved to Mepitac silicone tape over everything but my navel. 5. The swelling is starting to be noticeably reduced from early days. Still a ways to go, but heading in the right direction. 6. I had surgery on Thu 9/30, then started working from home on Mon 10/4, with a couple of hours of rest time each day. By week 2, I worked from home a full schedule and did the same for week 3 because I still had the drains. Going to try to work in the office all next week, but expect to be zapped since I have been so idle I'm sure my endurance is down. Other than two follow up surgeon visits, I haven't left the house in 3 weeks. All in all, doing pretty well. The pain is mostly transient with weird random nerve firing and such. Some muscle pain, but not too bad unless I cough or sneeze or twist funny. Will update again with pics in a week or so.

    OOTD

Aah, so it looks like the skirt is shirred. I love shirring. My mum made me a shirred top & shirred bodice dress for me when I was about 10 which I’ve never forgotten. Amusingly many designers have made the exact same shirred bodice dress in the last 12 months. Fashion does go around even if it takes 40yrs. Actually the dress would probably almost fit me again if I still had it. 😆 https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-au/shop/product/ganni/clothing/midi-dresses/ruffled-smocked-checked-organic-cotton-blend-seersucker-midi-dress/2009602782814 Oh, I hear you about the short girl problems. All the trousers that are loo long, sleeves drooping over my fingers & looking swamped in dresses & jackets. Sigh.
  7. For Week/Phase 3; is spaghetti with Veggie pasta noodles okay???? Im seriously craving spaghetti...... Surgery date was 10/11/21 Sent from my LM-Q730 using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. LMac67, I am thrilled with the results. I have about 10 or so more pounds I would like to lose. At this point, my weight loss is REALLY slow - 1 or 2 lbs./month, but I'm just sticking with the program and letting it work for me. I feel fortunate that I am not struggling with anything, and had a pretty easy time of it right from the start! Good luck, and keep us up to date on your progress finding a surgery center!

    Alittle Confused

First, I'm not sure if I read your post correctly? Do you actually want WLS surgery? Or are you feeling pressured into it? Or is it that you DO want it, but that you want the sleeve but feel pressured into Rny? Second to answer your timeline question, I'm from Canada so it may be a little different fyi...I didn't have to do any sort of supervised diet. I had actually cancelled my surgery twice out of fear/trepidation, BUT if I hadn't, the time elapsed from date of referral to the probable first (cancelled) surgery date would have been 9 months. If you include my cancellations, then it was 19 months till I got my surgery. I had to: attend a 3 hour info session get an EKG (twice cuz I cancelled) lab work (twice cuz i cancelled) sleep study (this was actually kinda cool, lol) 1 20-30 min. appt each with: a nurse, dietitian, social worker meet with surgeon (twice cuz i cancelled)
  10. Warning: TMI. Hi all. I had my gastric bypass on 10/6 so I am 16 days post op. I am having diarrhea to the point of incontinence and have resorted to wearing a pad to prevent any accidents. I’m so mortified. My diet has advanced to soft foods like scrambled eggs, yogurts cottage cheeses, etc. My surgeon is very liberal on advancing the post op diet. I don’t have dumping because it happens at random times. This is completely new for me. Before the surgery I had just the opposite issue and dealt with constipation occasionally. Just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem. Thanks in advance.
  11. The reason I go by weight is that it's easier to measure than volume. (Like you can't squish a pizza slice into a measuring cup.) The density of all foods is pretty close to the density of water. Within 10%, I would guess. And if I chew thoroughly like I'm supposed to, that four ounces of pizza will be about half a cup.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Scheduled for 10/23. Nervous and excited like most people on here. Looking forward to updating you all. Getting the gastric sleeve and everyone I have spoken to have said it was the best thing they did. Hoping I feel the same.

    I feel like I’m failing

Hi Bluesupef04, I am sorry that you are frustrated and feel like you are failing. Congratulations on your weight loss, it sounds like you lost around 70 pounds, that's awesome. You are absolutely not failing. I am also almost 3 months out. The weight seems to come off fast on pre op diet and the first month after the surgery. From what I understand average loss can be about 10 pounds a month for the first few months after surgery. Some lose more & some less. Stalls are also common for many WLS patients. I am sorry that you feel like your doctor isn't being helpful. I was surprised to read that he suggested eating once a day. Have you also been working with a nutritionist? You may want to meet with one to help you see if there is anything you can do with your food plan to help. I wish you luck moving forward & hope you achieve your weight loss goals.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hey everyone! I’ve been stalking these forums for months as I’ve been preparing for my surgery. This is my first time actually posting. I had my gastric bypass done 10/13. I’m down 13lbs in 8 days. It’s been rough to say the least! Even drinking water makes my belly feel so gurgly and sick. But I’ve not had any issues keeping fluids down, so I know I’m better off than so many who get actually sick.

  19. From my experiences in Italy, it's not a problem to share if you explain. (Mi hanno operato allo stomaco e non posso mangiare molto... andrebbe bene se io con mio marito condividessimo il piatto principale, se ognuno de noi ordinasse un antipasto?) However, you might have some trouble with protein in the morning. It depends where you are staying. If you are in a rented apartment where you must shop for your own food, of course, no problem, you can just buy the proteins you want and cook in the apartment. If you are in a tourist hotel, no problem, Germans travel to Italy in huge flocks and they tend to eat Brötchen (rolls), cold cuts, and cheese, you can just skip the rolls. The problem will be if you are in a little pensione or a hotel that caters to Italians, breakfast is likely to be cappuccino (never ordered after about 10 a.m.) with either bread and jam, or with a cornetto (like a sugary croissant, but either filled [ripieno] with sweet almond paste, cinnamon paste, fruit paste, or Nutella, or not filled [vuoto]). If this is where you are staying you might ask if they have any yoghurt for breakfast. Italians don't eat eggs, bacon, sausage, or ham for breakfast... US breakfasts confuse them.
  20. Hi everyone, New here.I had my sleeve on 10/5/21. I am just starting on mushy foods. I have a big concern with what I can eat after 4 months. I am going to Italy in may and I already pushed this vacation back. It was originally in January. My question is at what month did everyone start eating, pasta, bread, pizza, steak, sweet stuff and did you have to wait to get approval from your doctor for it? I am a little worried about what I can and can’t eat on this trip. Also has anyone traveled by cruise lately, Do they allow you to take powder for your shakes? Thank you :)

Looking for Surgery People 60 and UP

Hi, I am 64 and had gastric sleeve surgery on September 1. I'm also interested in seeing what results people over 60 are getting, although I know there are a variety of factors. I feel that I am losing slower due to my age. I've lost 38 lbs in 8 and 1/2 weeks (counting the pre-op loss of 15 lbs in 10 days). How much exercise and what kind are you getting?

    Jumping in

It's been a roller coaster the past two days! 😀 They scheduled my surgery for Nov 24th, and then called back the next day saying that it will be denied by insurance if I can't provide better proof of my 3 month medically supervised diet. I have been on a diet, medication and seeing my endocrinologist regularly for 3 years. I've lost 35 lbs total, 10 in the last couple months. The coordinator said that a letter from my doctor would be sufficient and I wouldn't need to do another diet. But now seems like whatever my doctor wrote isn't good enough. She hadn't given me calorie goals and instead we focused on the plate diet, limiting starchy carbs, filling it up with vegetables, lean meats and really really really reducing portion sizes. Also a lot of the focus was on blood sugar control since I'm on an insulin pump. My doctor just sent more notes from my office visits, and now I'm waiting to hear back on if I can still have the surgery as scheduled. So we'll see if I have to do some 1200 calorie diet again and have the surgery pushed out until next year or not. Fingers crossed!
  23. I too wonder what my maintenance calories are because never in my life have I reached that stage. I am quite short so any sort of weight gain is always apparent , so dont really wanna gain 10 pounds extra down the line when Ive reached my weight goal....
