    Protein

Vegetarians that eat dairy and eggs are lacto-ovo vegetarians. Pescatarians eat fish. "Regular" vegetarians eat no animal product. Vegans eat no animal product and refrain from purchasing any clothes, etc, that have animal in them (leather, suede, etc). I don't eat much meat anymore simply because my tummy doesn't handle it well, and I use soy shakes. I have become an involuntary lacto-ovo vegetarian essentially. haha. But I still get 80g or so of protein a day.
  2. Hi everyone, I'm having my bypass next Wednesday, 7/22. I was calm for the most part until the past few days, when I started getting nervous, but that was the nervous that I'm assuming everyone feels when surgery gets close. For some background, I'm 22 years old, 5'1, and started working towards surgery in October of last year at 260 pounds. As of today, I'm 50 pounds down, and that's of course on my own, before having surgery. Yesterday, I started having serious second thoughts. These normal nervous thoughts had me wondering if I could do it on my own since I've been able to lose 50 pounds by myself before surgery, and I keep telling myself I worked hard for this, and surgery is right around the corner, and if I didn't think I needed it, I wouldn't have started the program in the first place. Like I said, I was calm until a few days ago, but yesterday it really started hitting me. I started getting the feeling that I'll be unsuccessful with the surgery. Most, if not all, programs require a high-protein diet after surgery, including my own program. My issue is, I'm an extremely picky eater. I'm a vegetarian, and while I'm not totally vegan since I'll eat products containing milk and eggs, I prefer not to eat (or drink) those things if I can avoid it. So aside from not eating meat, I don't eat cheese or regular eggs prepared in any way (if I try I will not be able to stomach it). I also am grossed out by tofu. This honestly leaves my only options for Protein for the rest of my life to be Protein Drinks and yogurt (which I would prefer not to eat all the time, it's not my favorite thing). My nutritionist said lentils and Beans are ok, but they have a lot of starch so to eat other things if I can. I'm on my pre-op diet so that means I'm stuck on my protein drinks and yogurt for now, and after talking with my nutritionist a few times yesterday, the nerves I was already feeling worsened, and I started having normal doubts to real second thoughts. I was wondering if I'm actually cut out for this kind of surgery since I know I can't keep up with the protein that I'm being asked to eat, and I'm not sure I can compromise since I already know I won't be able to handle things like eggs, cheese, and tofu. If this kind of thing relies on me eating protein all the time, what kind of success can I have if I'm not able to do that? Yes, it'll physically restrict me from overeating, at least for the first year or two, but I'm afraid of a stall after only losing a small amount, or regaining the weight and having gone through all of it for nothing. I'm also thinking how if I lost 50 lbs on my own, I could try to lose the other 100 lbs on my own too, even if it's not the rapid weight loss that the bypass would give me. Like I noted earlier, though, I wouldn't have started this program in the first place if I didn't feel like I needed to go through it and wouldn't have worked so hard to make sure it happens. I'm 22 years old, should I wait a couple of years since I'm having these thoughts and try things out on my own and see how things go with that? Or should I go through with surgery next week? I have no idea between my doubts and the hard work I went through.

    Any vegetarians or vegans?

I'm wading in , not vegan/vegetarian but starting to tilt that way after Dr Matthew Weiner et all. My favorite and it's soy based is Svelte, a little lower protein count but I don't taste a pronounced soy taste, I like the French Vanilla, it satisfies me pretty well I don't seem to get a quick hunger return.🍶
  4. I'm almost two weeks post op and have been doing well. Over the past three days I've noticed that whenever I drink a protein shake I'm feeling nauseous and extremely tired afterward. These don't seem like traditional lactose intolerance symptoms but I'm wondering if that could be the problem. I do have some almond milk and vegetarian protein powder I can switch to but I won't get as much "bang for my buck" in terms of protein. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm meeting or exceeding protein and water goals so I'm not dehydrated. The nausea does go away with Zofran. I don't have this problem with yogurt.

    ❤ JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

Look I'm not doing anything special. Four shakes and a meal. I've been making some simple but yummy vegetarian dinner (I know oxymoron right? 😂) and I'm satisfied. I feel I owe a lot it to the protein I drink every hour from 2pm - 5pm, then dinner a 6. I don't feel weak or tired. I did in the beginning. I think that was from cutting sugar cold turkey. I don't feel like I when I was starving myself. I even have the energy to work out regularly. My recipe: Good quality protein isolate powder Water blender bottle Shake it. Twist it. Pull it. Bop it. (Nothing past shake it is necessary) Enjoy (plot twist, you won't!)

Long Term Sleeve and Bypass updates from the guys.

I think either way it's a tool. This is a life changing experience in every sense of the way. We will need to change everything about our relationship with food from now until the rest of our lives. As far as health issues besides the weight loss I've heard nothing about the sleeve. (I too have searched and searched) for the bypass malnutrition. My aunt had the bypass and has to go for Iron infusions now. But I will say she does NOT take her Vitamins. After a certain point post op she stopped. Had she continued maybe it would be different. She also has an intolerance to meat in general so again back to lifestyle change, you have to have eat Protein first being vegetarian is going to make things difficult. She also just recently had a bout with kidney stones. Probably related to not drinking enough Water. Again we need to remember the good of the surgery should outweigh the bad. What are the long term risks of doing nothing at all. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    In The Beginning...

I am tired. Physically, mentally...you name it. It's all tired. I know what I have the opportunity to do here. I just can't find the jumping off point, the selfish self-caring button inside me to get motivated to care for myself. I have been blessed with a job that has an insurance company that will most likely pay the majority of the bill for a surgery that I can use as a tool to help shed this other layer of body that is encasing what I should be. I live where one of the best centers and doctors for this surgery happens to be. There are many things to consider. The mere fact of another abdominal surgery is a tremendous one. 3 c-sections and a gallbladder removed has already left enough trauma to that area. Having a permanent device implanted is causing a bit of a phobic reaction. Normal fears of surgery, allergies to meds I have experienced, etc. have all surfaced. The fact that I have a painful disability in my heels that cause me to have limited exercise ability. Also a torn miniscus in my knee that needs surgery, ironically caused from the physical therapy to my heels. My addiction to carbs and sugars is causing me to consider whether I can make this worth it. It is so serious that I have considered going to a physician for some kind of anti-compulsion meds to see if this will curb the cravings. It may be my lack of energy because of sleep apnea that leads me to sugar and caffeine. I seldom want protiens, maybe this is why the vegetarian lifestyle is so easy for me. There are plenty of healthy vegetable protiens but I only seem to want carbs, even after a detox or a fast. So much to consider. It is so obvious to others that I need to do this. Even my dad, who is anti-everything, is supportive of it. I have at least a month to make the decision. If I cannot get my sugar problems under control I don't see how this will work.

    Getting Stuck and Unstuck

Everyone has different experiences with this, for me, there's not much that I can't eat, but lots of things I have to be very very careful with or I can be in big trouble. When I'm stuck, there's nothing I can do except wait it out. Sometimes that means enduring some pain or discomfort from a few minutes to maybe half an hour. Other times, I'll have to go vomit, and this can be painful or it can be a non-event. Sometimes, I'll lean over the toilet, and open my mouth, and out it comes without any effort. Other times it's a lot more difficult. I never know what to expect when I get stuck, it's just something I have to let my body decide what to do about it. I'm a little worried about tomorrow being Thanksgiving, turkey is generally too dry for me, so I might be doing the vegetarian thing tomorrow.... It will depend on if I feel like drowning it in gravy or if it's moist enough. My best advice, though is to SLOW DOWN and take SMALL BITES. My worst problems are caused by eating way too fast, and then I'm beyond full, and there's nowhere for the food to go.... I just bought a one minute hourglass timer, after I swallow, I turn it over, and wait that one minute before I take the next bite. I just got it today, and I've only used it for one meal so far, so we'll see if it helps! I hope this helps you!

    I Started Nutrasystem! Stupid?

I think it's an awesome plan too, to follow a proscribed diet, if you want to, during the weight loss phase. You go girl! You're taking control of your life and the speed of weight loss you desire. I think that's great. I'd been thinking about doing Weight Watchers for long term support as pre-packaged foods are hard for me (I'm vegetarian). I think the band works really well in combination with a diet, if that's what you choose. I've lost almost all the weight I've lost by paying attention to calories.

Starting out on Soft Food Diet

I’m in my third week of fish, eggs, low-fat cheese, and tofu (white flaky fish or crab, no shrimp or salmon yet), canned tuna fish, eggs (scrambled, egg salad, hard boiled), ricotta bake (yum), Babybell, fat free cottage cheese, Laughing Cow, Morningstar vegetarian sausage (tofu), etc.) Next week I can add ground chicken or turkey, canned chicken, salmon, and shrimp. I also get a tablespoon of cooked soft vegetable with each meal (I’ve had yellow squash, mashed cauliflower, and broccoli). A different program I looked at allowed chicken, low sodium/low fat deli meat (ex. Turkey), and etc. during soft foods, but my doctor is very conservative. No red meat (including ground beef) until day 65 for me. I’m at day 33 today.

    August Sleevers-How are you doing??

Clif bars taste pretty decent, but they do look like someone chewed them once already right before they went into the package. Pretty high in carbs, too. Though, if I remember correctly, you're vegetarian, so I gather you have to approach the carbs/protein thing very differently than I do.

    Vegetarian banders

It's a little late now, but I'll make sure to come back and post some recipes tomorrow. For now, I'll just give you some general advice about making the transition to vegetarianism. I've been a vegetarian for a little over 7 years, but in the first couple of years, I just replaced meat with more carbs. When my parents would make dinner (some kind of meat with rice), I'd just add more rice to my plate, along with a side. This led me to gain weight rather quickly and become temporarily anemic. So, I guess I'd just warn you to watch out for that. Although vegetarianism is associated with better health, higher brain functioning, and longer life-spans, if done improperly, it can actually be more unhealthy than a carnivorous diet. Always shop for enough non-meat protein to cover every meal. Typically, I make foods that are usually made with meat, but I replace the meat portion with tofu, veggie ground meat, or Beans. Also, as a new vegetarian, it's easy to fall into the all-soy mentality. In the first year of being a vegetarian, I drank soy milk, ate soy ice-cream (found a pretty good one too), ate soy hot dogs and burgers with soy cheese regularly. We, all of us, including meat-eaters, already get a high amount of soy in our foods. I try to limit my soy (tofu and veggie meats) to no more than 4 servings a week, since studies indicate that too much of it is risky. Out of all soy products, tofu and tempeh are definitely much healthier versions of soy than soy veggie meats, as veggie meats are highly processed. If you are buying veggie meats (i.e. burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips etc), try to search for those that are made from grain or non-soy protein (legumes, taro, shitake mushroom burgers etc). If you don't want to drink cow's milk any longer, I'd recommend switching to a non-soy milk such as almond or rice milk. Unless you're considering veganism, I also recommend replacing some of your meat protein with eggs (since they contain all essential amino acids, many important minerals and Vitamins (especially the very important Vitamin B12, which only comes from meat or meat byproducts!), and are only about 70 calories each). In order to get a proper amount of Iron (and other minerals in your diet), you may want to increase your regular intake of dark veggies like broccoli and spinach, and eat more beans and whole grains. You won't need iron supplements (or supplements of any kind) if you eat these types of foods. Anyway, that's it for now. Good luck on switching to vegetarianism. You can always message me if you need any tips.

    Vegetarian banders

Uh, you misunderstood what you read. Haha. Obviously, I meant that it was a little late in the day for me to post recipes because I was sleepy. Why else would I follow up "it's a little late now," with "but I'll make sure to come back tomorrow?" Also, I spent the next paragraph giving her advice on how to make a healthy transition to vegetarianism, then I wished her good luck on the switch, and told her to message me for tips if she needed them... so, just from the context of the statement, it's pretty clear that I'm not trying to discourage her from becoming a vegetarian.

    Fast Food For Bandsters!!!

I stay away from FF as much as possible b/c it was one of my worst habits pre-band. When I do eat it, it is Wendy's chili or a Chipotle vegetarian bown with black beans. The kids' meals at Chick-Fil-A sound like a good option, especially since I am not a huge fan of chicken. It's something I can eat and get my nutrition when I am out, but I won't enjoy it so much that I will abuse it.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

Lying or choosing just not to tell others? My life, my body, my choice. I am not a poster child for bariatric surgery. The reactions - It's like telling someone you're vegetarian. They think they have to go out of their way to accommodate you. No, just cook what you normally cook and I'll choose what I want to eat and how much I want to eat. Then there's the doubters. "Do you really think that's necessary, can't you just diet? Such a drastic thing to do! You're putting yourself at risk going under anesthesia!" Blah, blah, blah! At a business dinner one time a coworker told the waiter, "I've had bariatric surgery so I can't eat much. The table dinner conversation following was all about her and the surgery. She kept the conversation going even though the rest of the table was well done talking about it which was real quick. This is a business dinner not an all about me and my bariatric surgery dinner. Well, she gained all the weight back she had lost plus a few more. Maybe she should have kept that information about her bariatric surgery to herself? Now, if I want to tell and talk about it with a friend or acquaintance who seems could benefit and it comes up in conversation I will tell them and talk about it and ask for their confidentiality. Long term weight loss is not guaranteed so let's not sugar coat it. Some people fail. A lot, well most of us have eating disorders. Or relationship with food is the problem. It's like a drug it calms and sooths us until after we're done eating too much. We don't listen to our bodies. You can't necessarily fix a mental problem with a physical solution. So, you be you and let others be them.

    Social Eating

It's been no big deal for me, either. I rarely get a lunch break, so my normal work day consists of constant grazing.....mixed nuts, Quest bar, Protein smoothie, Jerky, string cheese, whatever I can eat in between appointments. My partner actually comments about how I'm always eating. As for going out and buffets, etc. I just eat what I can eat, no biggie. I often split an entree with someone who's also "watching their weight". Or I get whatever I want and end up with a lot of leftovers. Everyone knows I've had surgery so they are used to what I eat and no one really cares. I was at a memorial service yesterday where the served spaghetti and meatballs, vegetarian lasagna, bread, salad and various Desserts. I had 1 meatball (no pasta), some salad, and dissected the layers of 1/2 piece of lasagna to get mostly the veggies and cheese. A little later I split a cookie with someone and took a couple bites of someone else's cinnamon roll. Oh yeah, and drank 2 16 oz bottles of Water but passed on the beer and wine.
