I was way too tired all weekend, so I decided I needed more protein (sick of the shakes) and vitamins I was willing to take. I got some bean soup, which I make watery and chew well, and some Flintstone's Vitamins. They taste good...much better than the liquid stuff I bought and used once! The bean soup and vitamins made me feel better. I saw a comment about being uncomfortable at day 13. Wow...that sounds like maybe there's a problem? I still have a little discomfort where my port is, but it only bothers me when I roll over in bed...and even that is minimal. I watched a video last night from this woman...much younger than me...who is about six weeks post op and has only lost 20 pounds...mostly pre-op. This made me feel a little better, since most videos are showing people dropping weight really fast. I'm trying to be realistic. After all, I'm over 50! I lost about 5 pounds pre-op and about 3 since the surgery. I'm OK with that. So now, it's almost 8pm and I have to be to work early in the morning...so to bed with me! Thanks to everyone for your support!

I am in the same boat. Three days until surgery. My surgeon’s record is almost perfect. Only one leak in many year doing about 500 per year, never killed anyone. The pre-op liquid diet has made me drop many pounds fast, which makes me think I could do this on my own, but then reality sets in and I know I will over eat. Its just a matter of time. Then I start thinking about all the life style changes I will be committing too. How will I spend my now idle time when food isn’t part of the equation? How do I deal with social interactions without food and beverage? No more alcohol. Ouch On the bright side getting my health back will be great. Everyone in my support group says you get more energy and feel much better fast. As you said a few weeks of struggle and everything should be better. I have to say everyone I have met that has had this surgery has enjoyed the benefits. Each one seems to have their own set of struggles, but they are content with their decision. It comes down to taking a leap of faith. If I make it though the surgery centers doors on Wednesday I will be asking for some pre-op drugs so that I dont turn and run. This is tough and I am scared. .

My story from lap band to gastric bypass
shedo82773 replied to ShrinkingMeme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Shrinkingmeme, That darn Lap Band!! My hubby had his for 13 years, which was in the year of 2000. He did lose 100#'s but he is a Large man. He started out at 520#'s so we had expected a lot more of a loss. When he went in for his fill the nurse damaged his port. First let me say his Dr at the time said he wasn't strong enough for the RNY which was what he wanted and needed. She also used a VANGAURD BAND ( he was the first man in Oregon to get one) it was a BIG lap band. So he never lost any more weight and it came to be that he couldn't eat or drink and hold anything down. The VA sent him to a Dr in Coos Bay Oregon to empty his band. Then he tried to refill it but couldn't. He was scheduled for a revision to the RNY. When they got in there the band had eroded into his liver and he had to much scar tissue to be able to do the RNY. They did remove his band and his Gallbladder. He told him that after he healed for 3 months they could go back in for the RNY. Well he developed abcesses bad He was so sick he almost died. He was sick for 9 months and 3 of them he doesn't even remember!! Fast forward to him trying to get the Dr in Coos Bay to get the RNY well he told us he wouldn't do the surgery because he was such a problem child, but he referred him to OREGON HEALTH AND SCIENCE they told him they would do it if he got his A1C down below 8. And lose 20#'s. Well I don't know if you are familiar with Diabetes but if his blood sugar is down his weight is up so he just couldn't get it done. So we went to Mexico June 3 when that Dr opened him up his whole right side was solid scar tissue from his band and other surgery so they did the Sleeve on him. He isn't losing his weight easily for sure. He has lost 60#'s now. I had the RNY and lost all of my weight in 6 months which was 124#'s. I think people should be compensated or at least Dr's should have to make it right!!! I have heard that the FDA may be pulling them off the market and there are a lot of Dr's that don't even do them anymore. It makes me so mad that so many people have suffered because of the Lap Band!! Good luck on your Journey's!! -

Something to commemorate my decision
BethFromVA replied to BethFromVA's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Luckily anesthesia doesn't bother or worry me. I think of it as a nice, deep sleep. I can't believe how slow (and fast) this is going. I had said a couple weeks ago that the 10 months it took between planning our trip to Hawaii and when it actually came (and went) went by SOOOOO fast, but this few weeks between meeting with my doc and my surgery is dragging... lol I guess now because stuff is actually happening, it will go by faster. Before it was just waiting. Hell, I didn't even get official approval from insurance until yesterday afternoon! I'm just... wow. The emotions will hit (you know what I mean). I see YOUR progress, for instance, and say, wow, that can be me one day. Granted, I'm starting a lot higher than you, but still... it's nice to see people working the band and doing it so well. I won't know what to do with myself. I already have short hair, so I guess I'll have to try to grow mine out to make the "hair change." -
Newbie: started off great and going downhill fast!!
DroppingOneHundred posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, this is my first post and I hope you all can shed some insight! I have read a few posts (on this site and google) about this topic and no real answer has come to be! I had my gastric bypass 4/4/17, and was doing great the first week! By my one week check up I was getting in 3 protein shakes a day, water in between, and a few spoonfuls of yogurt and apple sauce through out the day! I was proud of how good I was feeling. Happy with my decision. Got my staples out (those things are the devil) and was happy! Almost immediately the next day or so I started getting nauseous sipping my shake. Would set it down. Put back in fridge. Try to finish later. Same thing. Bubble a bite of yogurt. And vomit. I was so confused. Would sip some water... then same. Walked away from everything for hours and then try again and same results. Vomit. All day long. Those first couple of days that it started (right after my one week mark) I was very confused and still trying. Now, at 3.5 weeks out I am down to one protein shake very slowly sipped over 2-3 hours and barely 30-40 oz of water sipped through out the day. That's it. Zofran was called in for me last week and no change. I've tried food again (pudding, yogurt, apple sauce) and all come back up and if I drink my shake "fast" and by fast I mean over the course of ONE hour it also gives me the same gagging nauseous feeling. I feel so sick all day long! On the flip side, I'm perfectly fine with just water, herbal tea, even gaterade, but it's ANYTHING thicker that causes issues. i am a mom to FOUR kids. It feels exactly like the all day morning sickness I had with my two girls for nine months straight. I feel like I'm failing as a mother because I'm so energy depleted my patience wains fast. I love them dearly, and they are all younger than the age of six, so they have no clue what I'm going through. I keep telling them "mommy is sick" but they obviously don't know why. I can't live off just water and a sip or two of protein shake. Help! -
I'm actually finding mushies easier than liquid because as you eat, it makes you feel full for ages, and you don't have head hunger when you're full. But the weight loss isn't as fast as when I was on liquids, but that's okay too. If I'm still losing 1.5 kgs (about 3.5lbs) a week on mushies, that's faster than I've ever lost on any diet in my life, so can't complain about that. Even when I'm on full solids, my Dr reckons after my first fill, I should still drop about 1kg (2kgs) a week, thereabouts. If that's true, it means I'll be at goal by Christmas! So must keep my eye on the prize, and keep working the band. It's sad though knowing I won't lose weight as fast as on that first week on liquids. But we can't live on liquids forever, right? So I'm kinda looking forward to the challenge of getting back to eating normal foods, but still losing weight, IYKWIM. Thanks you everyone for always being so supportive to me, and to each other!

pain and not losing - help!
TampaJohn replied to karyno's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded about 2 months ago, and was fine for the first few weeks, then i cheated and ate some solids. That pain you described is what i had, for 4 days, virtually non stop - but i went back on liquids and it finally went away. Now, when i eat too fast, dont chew enough, or dring cold liquids while eating i get those same pains. If i eat slowly, chew enough, and dont drink with my food i have no pain at all! -
4 months out and I ate the whole can!
italian-girl replied to Karnie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I find if I eat anything with Beans it fills me up super fast. But I measure everything if its serving size is in cup form I use measuring cups if its in pieces I count pieces and if its in oz. I weigh it on a food scale. I eat what I measure out and it's quite typical for me to leave a bite or two on my plate.. I haven't found a slider food yet.. Which I ain't mad at! I get full on everything so far and I'm ok with that. Honestly tho measuring it out seems to be the best way for me. Good luck! -

. Oh okay , I'm not really sure about their policies .. But mine went pretty fast. I got my referral on June 3 had orientation June 11- was sleeved on August 12 because I had to wait a month for my pysh eval because he only work 3 days a week there so it might have been sooner that's not bad at all compared to what I thought it was going to take. I've read a few different posts that said Kaiser requires a 12 week nutritional class and you have to lose 10% of your current weight before you can have the surgery. Congrats on your journey! -
Hi Dean, I was banded May 15th and I had my first fill today. I lost 10 pounds since surgery and the nurse said that was very good! She said a lot of patients don't lose anything in the first month and some even gain. So don't worry about it, you're doing great. We're all anxious to lose the weight fast but it's really not healthy to lose it too fast. You're on a new journey and the weight WILL come off!

CheleLynn45 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Today marks my one year mark from my gastric sleeve surgery. I cannot believe how fast this year has gone. So many things have changed for the better for me and my family. I am a happy participant in my life now, no more standing on the side lines watching life pass me by. All my labs are in the perfect zone, and oh I have lost some weight along the way. I still have 25lbs to go to reach my first goal of 175 and I hope to do that by my birthday which is May 5th. I was hoping to get below 200 by today, but I will take 200.4 and keep moving forward. This tool that I have been blessed with is such a god send for me. I am glad to still have restriction, so I am using this tool for all it is worth. I am confident I will reach my next goal. -
I had been hovering right around 250 for some time (since early December). 250 is an important "milestone" weight for me for a couple of reasons; first, I simply never thought I could get my weight down to 250 and keep it there (let alone lose MORE). Second, for adults the weight limit on a lot of things is 250 pounds; for instance, I had to buy an ultra-heavy duty office chair for my computer because at 330 lbs I literally destroyed Office Depot-type cheapo chairs too fast, so it made sense to invest in a heavy duty, high quality chair. But my weight "stuck" around 250 and wouldn't budge... at one point during the holidays it bounced back as high as 254. My gf tried to convince me that it was Water weight, but my glass half empty mind just "knew" that 250 was as low as I go and now I was going to start climbing again. Well, without any real change of diet or exercise habits, I've started losing again, and am now down to around 246. Hopefully this trend will continue to my Hawaii vacation at the end of February; I don't want to look COMPLETELY disgusting in swim trunks! Does anyone else have the same experience where your body seems to hold on to weight for a couple weeks, and then with no real change in diet or exercise habits, abruptly start losing again? I can't figure it out; in this case I know that it was literally NOTHING I changed in my diet and exercise habits (still moderate but not perfect with my diet, still utterly bad about exercise), so it must have been some internal, metabolic thing!

Eating too fast
RJ'S/beginning replied to newlysleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was showed pictures of stretching of the sleeve the last time I was at my teams office....It is not the sleeve that stretches like Lipsticklady said. Actually a pouch can form under your sleeve at the entrance of your small intestines. There you can store extra food if you abuse the sleeve long enough. The problem with that is that you then weaken the small intestine and can cause a whole new set of problems....So it might be good to try not to eat too fast or over fill your sleeve. Putting your fork down after every bite helps me. Also a smaller fork or spoon. Half way through I stop eating and cross my arms over my chest and wait to feel out my sleeve. A lot of time I don't go back eating after I notice the difference as how I feel... -
I have been banded for a few weeks. it will be like the 6-7th day and most symptoms will go away just make sure you are walking around when you start to feel these pains and also gas-x worked great for me but i learned you have to take it faithfully to the max . drink little at a time as much as possible it helps if you can drink warm liquids it will help dissipate the gas fast. I hope this helps...

Every insurance company has different requirements. I have an out of state BCBS (illinios) and my employer is Catholic Health Initiatives and they have a program called carewise. Through them I had to have six months of phone nutrition calls with a documented end weight from primary doctor at end of six months. I also had a RN case manager. Basically, we talked about any diagnosis I had, concerns, changes I needed to make to prepare for surgery. I lost maybe 10 pounds then regained bc I hurt my back and was literally in bed for a time. So in the end I weighed 3 pounds less then when I started. They were fine with that. I struggled with years being insulin dependent and very metabolically resistant even when I ate low carb. I also had to have a psych review, primary doctor review. The entire process went fast even though initially I thought six months would take forever. I am glad it took that long gave me plenty of time to weigh my options and do lots of research on complications and lifestyle changes. I started the process May of 2012 and had surgery Jan 24 2013. I can say trying to eat smaller portions, with baby spoons and all that is tough prior to surgery and for the most part I didnt do it just knew I would have changes to be made after surgery. I have had no issues since surgery. Good Luck

I did the hug diet about a year and a half ago and was miserable. Lost a lot of weight fast, burned out on it and like all other diets gained it back plus some. As for menopause, it does make it easier to gain wt and harder to lose it, but many of us have already proven that it's still possible. I can't imagine that your nutritionist told you to take in 1900 calories. That's about what you would need to maintain wt, not lose. My doc said 1200. I mix it up, 1200 for a few weeks, 900 for a few. Plus lots of exercise.

Soda, "Chips" and Cake and still losing weight....
shonette commented on Yvette1026's blog entry in How I lost 100lbs
I agree totally with muscle weighing more than fat. The more I work out my clothing sizes drop like crazy but the scales don't always go down as fast as I think it should. However, I measure my success from the sizes and inches lost. Always remember every single person is totally different and the way we lose isn't the same. I am six months out and I've only lost 56 pounds as of yesterday. However, this has been the smallest I have been in years. I thank God for every inch-pound he's enabled me to loose! I just think back 6 months ago I weighed 325 and today I am 269. Hey that is one victory I am glad to celebrate. -
I hope that I don't have to be a year out, 10 pounds under goal, or wearing size 0 jeans to be considered a success, but, by golly, I feel like one. No matter what program I've been on in the past, it took me 6 months to lose 50 pounds. There was no difference between Weight Watchers, medically-supervised fasting, the "crap" band, or PhenFen. 50 pounds equaled 6 months. Well, tomorrow is my 12 weeks, and I'm down 47 pounds. I haven't hit a stall yet (I know that I will). My hair is thinning a bit, but I've been through that before with childbirth and illness. I'm finally into a size 16, as in "off-the-rack" at regular clothing stores. I eat small quantities of healthy food, feel satisfied, and watch not only the scale but my body measurements change, too: From a 39" waist to 35. For many of you, that's still monstrous, but for someone of my age and build, it's amazing. Has it been work? Yes and no. It took awhile to get my regimen together: liquid Vitamins and minerals, enough Protein (usually), enough Water (seldom), remembering my PPI (urp), and giving up high-acid foods and beverages. But it's as if I have the appetite that I was born with. I was a skinny kid, and because of various influences and events, I ballooned at 13. So, I again have that skinny kid's appetite. I don't binge, I stay low-carb, I don't have over-powering cravings for foods, and I'm happy with my new lot in life. Do I have a ways to go? Of course, but how far, I have no idea. I don't know what an optimum weight is for me. I'd love to wear a size 14. A 12? I haven't worn that size since I WAS 12. It's so blasted exciting to see the possibility of a normal body size. I love this sleeve. I love my surgeon. And I love you all for being such wonderful encouragers and examples.

isn't it awesome? I am amazed at how fast I fill up. FUN!

Not a happy camper on the liquid diet!
NJChick replied to daniela531's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doc doesn't require a fast. Actually the nutritionalist that I went to said I should go out for dinner as much as possible before the surgery ROFL !!! Talk about mind twisting, you'd think they'd want to promote good eating from word go. -
I saw my surgeon yesterday and we decided on lap band instead of gastric. I just wasn't at peace with gastric. I am so afraid I made a mistake . My BMI is 56. I had lost 115lbs. on a liguid fast 2 years ago. I put it all back on plus 20 lbs. I am so afraid I won't lose enough. I guess I will just have to be patient. Thanks for listening. Kathy
