January 2020 Surgery Folks
BadWolfGirl replied to TattooedSeaStar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel pretty great too! Energy is great. My surgery was 1/27 so I'm six weeks out. I definitely still have a hard time eating slow and definitely can't handle any breads or things. A 39 year habit of scarfing meala down is hard to break haha. And I fricken hate cold food. Surgery weight was 246. Today I was 221 so 25 lbs down. I don't seem to be losing as fast as everyone else on her but I am weight training and do eat natural carbs and sugar. I'm okay with a slower loss because I feel the way I eat will be sustainable and healthy long term. Congrats on your success! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -

How is everyone??? Tomorrow makes 9 weeks since surgery (crazy it's gone so fast) for me, and overall I'm feeling fantastic. My bones ache less, I can chase my toddler farther and faster, and I just feel better in my body again! Clothes are getting loose but I'm waiting to make any big purchases until the ones I have look like crap lol.. anyhow, I'm female, 5'6", started pre op diet at 260, surgery weight was 249, and I've made it down to 210 as of yesterday. Can't wait for more of this progress!! Hope everyone is doing well, can't wait to see the new us in a couple more months. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J327AZ using BariatricPal mobile app -
Did anyone have complications post op
Ostflicka replied to Socee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
OMG my surgeon put me on shots for 2 weeks after surgery and they had me get those leg squishier things to use when I was sitting or lying in bed for more than 2-3 hours, which was like all the time at first. I was in a lot of pain so I wasn't walking as much as you were. Wow that's awesome you did so much so fast. -
Confused about diabetes after RNY
Prestonandme replied to JRT Mom's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was pre-diabetic before surgery for only about a year (about 110 fasting). Like you, I was put on metformin but my blood sugar continued to rise slightly. At first, after surgery, my blood sugar was in the 80's, but at 6 months, it was measured at 95. I was a wreck. But my surgeon kept saying, "Don't worry about it. We'll deal with it if there's a problem." My PCP looked at my A1C from the six month checkup and said it is fine (4.9) and that she, too, wasn't worried about the 95 blood sugar score, but if it climbed even to the higher 90's, she would consider starting me on metformin again. I'm feeling really sad because I thought the surgery would keep me in the 80's, where I was about seven years ago. I am scared going forward -- I won't be retested until June, but I definitely feel for you and totally understand your concerns. -
I’m on the soft foods stage and I’m starting to get terrible indigestion. It’s like I can feel it going down and then it burns a little in my throat and chest. Is this normal? I’m not eating fast at all. It also doesn’t help that these protein shakes are making me nauseous :-(. I pray this gets better because it is super annoying!

Hi y'all, before I got my RNY I had a touch of diabetes. Hemoglobin A1C as only two points above normal with a fasting blood sugar of around 110. My FCP started me on Metformin and after three months my A1C was within normal limits. My surgeon told me to stop taking the Metformin the day before my surgery-said I wouldn't need it anymore. Well, in preparation for my three month post surgery visit the surgeon had me get some labs, and now my A1C is elevated again, and my fasting blood sugar is 117. Have any of y'all had that happen? I haven't cheated once on my diet with sugary stuff. I'm still showing ketones in my urine. So why is my glucose and A1C back up? I see the surgeon Thursday--hopefully he can explain it...

Intermittent fasting can do wonders. Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) lifestyle is also pretty powerful. (Watch "The Game Changers.") Dr. Michael Greger has a lot of "hacks" in his evidence based book, "How Not to Diet." It is filled with tweaks that can start whittling away at pounds Congrats on your amazing weight loss. You might not be at your goal yet, but you are so much healthier even where you are. Do NOT get discouraged and start undermining yourself. You have done an amazing thing.

I’m counting also I’ve just completed my pre-op class today it’s all going so fast now 😊

It's official! My surgery date is April 7th! I'm having VSG and also getting my nasty ol' gall bladder removed. I start my pre-op diet on March 28th - 10 days, but it's not too bad. It's kind of like the Slim Fast plan - 2 shakes and a sensible dinner (plus lots and lots of water!) I'm beyond excited! And also nervous and anxious and all that other stuff!

Any upcoming March 2020 Sleevers out there??
Pansypicker replied to Pansypicker's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How are all the March sleevers doing so far? Had Mine 3/6. Since Last Wednesday, I have lost a total of 12 pounds.... It's all kind of crazy. I believe I got the emotional hormonal thing going on right now. I've been a bit grumpy the last two days. Can't believe how fast the date came. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
AZhiker replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So I am starting to have some challenges - my volume restriction has eased and I just want to eat more. My weight is still hovering where I want it, but barely, and I can sense a very slow upward trend. Here are my strategies for taking off a couple of pounds and keeping it there. These are evidence based hacks, according to Dr. Michael Greger ("How Not to Diet.") 1) Topload the day with more calories (more dense foods in the morning and less dense in evening.) 2) Intermittant fasting 3-4 times a week (on my work days.) It is easy to skip breakfast on those days. 3) NO eating after 6 pm. (I snack way too much in the evening.) Hot herbal tea will be just fine. 4) Measure my nut/nut butter portions instead of estimating. 5) Measure all my carb portions (I tend to over size my grains). 6) Drink a glass of cold water 30 minutes before each meal. 7) More consistent daily exercise. Now with warmer weather, I have started biking again and training for a tri in 3 weeks. I bit the bullet and bought a 1 month membership at LA Fitness so I can use the pool, and will have a session with a personal trainer to help me tweak my weight routine. -
FEEL SO MUCH BETTER NO LONGER DEHYDRATED
CammyC replied to BecomingAnna's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m one week post op today and so tired of drinking. I can’t wait to chew on something again. I have my one week follow up tmrw morning With my surgeon and hoping he will put me on full liquids. I was actually hungry yesterday and tried some 1% milk with my protein powder instead of water and I got nauseated, fast heart rate, hot flashes and sweaty. It really scared me but I jumped in here and discovered I was having dumping syndrome symptoms. I loved milk prior to the sleeve and we’re not really supposed to have dumping syndrome like the bypass peeps, allegedly from what I’ve read on the net. So that kinda sucks. -
When to transition from liquids to soft foods
AJ Tylo replied to Mkak6's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just be careful and take the transisition slowly, Your body knows more then your doctor does when it is ready you will realize it. No two of us are the same so slowly transition thru the phases, You may need a few more days or maybe your ready to go. Slow and Steady wins the race. Trust me go to fast and you will pay for it! Welcome and Congrads -
I had a leak, but as someone said earlier, it occurred while I was still in the hospital immediately after surgery. They suspected it due to an extremely fast heart rate and high white blood cell count, and it was confirmed by an x-ray after swallowing barium. I'm not sure whether leaks can occur a few weeks after surgery--but in case that turns out to be the case, you'll be relieved to know that mine was quickly and easily repaired and there were no long-term issues.

That's actually a myth. You body will utilize all the protein that it takes in over time. The part that people stick to is that it can only absorb so much in a time span. See the linked study on optimal anabolic response: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5828430/ Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but GENEPRO is junk protein powder whose owner was sued for faulty claims. If you read the fine print, it should say something along the lines that it is a magically fast absorbing protein that is equivalent to 30 grams of protein. It's bunk. Do a search on this forum for GENEPRO and you will find some really angry people who got suckered.

Hi Mooki, This thread has been really useful for me, I have my op in 17 days and I am really terrified. Your initial post was so informative and has addressed a lot of my concerns, so thank you for that!. Also one of my big fears was having uncontrolled hunger in the early stages so it’s good to know that having a few spoonfulls of yoghurt satiated the hunger and enables you to carry on with your journey. It is also useful to know what to expect and to see that you are able to hydrate and walk at such an early stage. Thank you for sharing your journey. It’s interesting that every surgeon has a different post op pathway. My instructions are 2 weeks of clear liquids, 2 weeks of all liquids (including soups and yoghurt etc) and then purees from week 4-6. Normal textured food will start at week 7. It seems like a long time so I am hoping the initial 6 weeks go fast.

I’m officially on post op day 7. Although very early on in my journey I’m staring to feel discouraged. I often have sharp but fast fading gas pain in my chest. It happens mostly when I drink any fluids. I’m trying my hardest to drink all my fluids but it’s been tough. I feel healthy and have already lost a good amount of weight! I’m just becoming worried it will be like this forever!?!

Pain Under left Boob ?
djgirl19 replied to MamaAsh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m not a year but 9 months and have started having this. And it’s always after I eat. Once or twice during yoga but not strenuous exercise. As if the stretching irritates it. I do think I notice it from eating too fast but plan on checking with the dr when I have my follow up. -

Costs of vitamins and calcium
over65 replied to over65's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Bariatric vitamins are not regulated by FDA either, So who knows if you"re just getting an expensive version of a deficient vitamin. Don't know if any companies making bariactric vitamins are voluntarily testing their products. I never bought fast food or ate out so difference in food budget so my food budget won't change. I have been eating low carb, whole food (no processed foods) so my diet will be very much the same, So vitamins and calcium will be extra expense for me. I am anxious. Seems like it's been forever. I start the gauntlet of all the presurgical and liquid diet class stuff next week. I'm counting days! I'm still nervous and to what to buy to have at home. Everyone keeps saying wait to buy protein shakes etc because I might not be able to drink them after surgery. I live alone so I dont have anyone to just send shopping for me after surgery. Kinda stressing. I'm glad your surgery went smooth! 4 days post op! Im jealous! I hope you heal fast! Yay Michigan! I'm from Michigan! And having surgery April 1st- hopefully my surgeon doesnt have a sense of humor that could get interesting lol

Costs of vitamins and calcium
VIN_IN_AL replied to over65's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I am still a couple of months from surgery and have already kicked around some numbers for post-op specialty Bariatric vitamins. Yes. they are a bit on the expensive side compared to other brands. I also factored in the massive saving in food costs post-op, going back one year on expenditures put on a single credit card I use for just about everything (Points!) I was amazed on how much money I was spending on fast food. 1/3 of the money spent on fast foods would easily pay for the increased cost in Bariatric vitamins so for me its basically a wash. -
I do, but I didn't stat that until I was almost 5 years post op. It does make a difference if you are in nutritional ketosis, and does boost my loss when I fast for longer periods. otherwise, I'm not sure there is much benefit.
