Gastric Sleeve Surgery On Wednesday
Lissa replied to crazycatlady8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ladonna, Are you still taking your pain meds? They might be the source of your hives. Or, if you are using milk to mix your Protein shakes, it might be giving you a bad reaction. I used milk in one of mine early post-op and spent the next couple of hours in the bathroom regretting my milk. I am definitely lactose intolerant, but that is usually temporary. Also, chicken broth has some protein, so you are getting a little tiny bit. Don't worry about the protein this early, just concentrate on sipping your Water. If you are hurting when you drink, you may be drinking too quickly or too large of a sip. Lots of people here report that it's easier to pour the liquid into a small medicine cup (like a nyquil cap) and then sip the liquid from that cup. It definitely makes you drink more slowly. You might also try "drinking" from a teaspoon and waiting a few minutes between each teaspoon full. Let the liquid trickle down your throat. I had lots of pain from drinking too quickly myself. I was over-filling my tummy and that hurts especially bad when you are newly post-op. Lastly, the weight gain you have experienced is probably from all the fluids that were pumped into you during and just after surgery. That will resolve itself in a few days. Good luck on your journey!!! And, welcome to the loser's bench! -
Your observations seemed to have answered your questions... Try to stick to the foods that were on your plan to kick start weightloss again. But most people cannot eat their fill of anything they want after surgery. That is what usually caused the initial weight gain

OnTheWay to Thin replied to hotsexyrunnerchick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah we have all been there and it is hard. My doctor told me not to worry too much about trying to lose until I had my fills, but I wanted so bad not to gain what I lost. So what I did was increase my consumption of veggies that basically have no calories or very few, this kept me satisfied longer and did not cause weight gain. It does get better, but it is a tough time between surgery and fills... -
Another Freaking Gain Grrrrrr
MSanti replied to rodswife's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My weight gain and loss has been a roller coaster since Surgery. I have learned to accept the changes in my body and to just keep pushing forward and ignore it. I am 11 months out and have lost a total of 94 pounds. It WILL happen for you too. Just be patient with your body and don't freak out when you notice a gain, eventually you start loosing again. -
While on your weight loss journey, did you find that going for therapy helped you deal with your food issues? If so, how did it help? Did the therapist help you figure out why you were addicted to food? Do they have some special trick that helps you lose the addiction? How did you find a therapist who was good with weight loss issues? Several of them in my area list weight loss as one of their specialties, but I am still nervous about going to someone who just tells me to eat less and exercise more. WLS will help fix the physical issue, but many people (myself included) need to figure out the root causes of the weight gain. I'm going to attend my first support group meeting next week, so I will ask for some local recommendations at that time, but I am interested in hearing about other people's experiences with seeing a therapist to help fix your head.

Has anyone heard of gaining weight when you transition from mushies to solid food? The nutritionist said that there is a possibility of a small weight gain initially....what the heck?!?! Is there any way to avoid that???? Thanks, Katie

Weight Gain!!!
Canadian Girl replied to Canadian Girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Exercise is not my favorite thing by far, but walking is something I think I can do. Right now I am on vacation from work, by usually work is a really active place for me as I am rushing from one place and thing to the next. I do feel like i have good restriction as I am full after eating about 3/4 of a cup of food and don't need to snack between meals, but this weight gain is getting the better of me. -
Lapband vs lapband with plication?
3mommy replied to 3mommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am ready to do this. I am 100lbs from my goal weight of 135lbs. I have healthy eating habits but I eat too much. I can't control my portions ill have the steak and veggies but overdo it on the portion size of the meats. I'm not a huge picker but occasionally those cookies will torture me and I overindulge plus I eat super fast. I lose control over how much I eat. I am hoping if I continue to eat healthy protein and veggies the Lapband will help with the feeling full quicker so not only do I not go for seconds But i can't even finish my first a plate. There is this supposedly "new" belt type thing you wear on the outside I tried this its actually approved by insurance comp I didn't pay a penny for it, but it hurts soooooooooooo bad to wear this thing all day I had bruises I think you don't feel hungry bc your in pain. It did help me to eat less but I couldn t utilize properly bc it cut in so bad. I haven't come to the Lapband decision lightly. It's been a 2 year decision on and off again before I went for my first consult and finally after my 3 rd child and a 115lbs weight gain over. 9 year period I am ready to make changes and eat less. I don't want to be the "fat" mom. I want my kids to see me eating right and pick up from my healthy eating and portion sizes and I'm hoping from the less weight and healthy eating ill have more energy to exercise on a daily basis not just once a week sometimes twice. -
Been put onto sertraline tablets
mrsto replied to hayley_94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It shouldn't affect your fill, but it might effect your weight loss. SSRIs are know to cause a bit of weight gain, so just be prepared. Maybe it won't affect you as much, since you're following such a low calorie plan. But it is a possibility -
How the heck did I gain a pound?
ranchersdaughter replied to Terrib's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the post surgery swelling. Give your poor body a chance to recooperate. Try not to feel like you should have woken up from surgery all of a sudden "skinny". I'm 33 days post op. I was on a 2 week stall, then I gained 5 lbs, started my period and turned into overweight psycho lady. That was last week. Woke up this morning and have lost 6lbs!!! Don't stress over a lb. Don't even stress about 10 lbs!!!! Stress causes weight gain! The best advice I can give you is to stick to your surgeons post op plan and walk walk walk walk. It gets better!!! I promise. -
No weight loss first week???
Dimples58 replied to dayoneyearone's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You will gain after surgery. The weight gain is from the IV and gas during surgery. I gained about 8lbs and loss it within 1.5 weeks. I was pre warned of this before surgery so it wasn't a surprise to me. Hang in there, the weight will drop. -
Hi, I had a VSG on October 27th and have just been moved to soft food. I am following the nutritionist recommendations for food and portions. Over the last week I have not lost any weight and this morning am up 2lbs. Is this normal? Sent from my SM-G981U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm on one of the biggest culprits for meaningless weight gain, lithium. My psych doctor said that for some reason his patients who get wls don't have the weight gain effects after the surgery, but I don't understand why that would be possible.

If you gain, they won't do it. I know some will say you can't gain, some 10% weight loss, but no matter what, any weight gain on the period before, no one will do it. I'm sorry.

Feeling like something is wrong
James Marusek replied to Mr Edwards's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. I am assuming that you are following your surgeons directions on daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements to a tee. Since you are several months post-op, one thing to do now at this stage is to assess your protein intake. Your daily protein requirement is met by a combination of the amount of protein you obtain from food combined with the amount of protein from protein supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). Right after gastric bypass surgery, the volume of food you consume is minuscule (2 ounces) per meal. But as you get further along, the meal volume increases. Therefore you have a very important option available to you. As a result, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals. I went from 3 protein shakes a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op. This is important because protein shakes contain calories. If you can reduce your caloric intake, then you can end a stall. At least that was the approach that I used and it worked for me. In your case, I would recommend that you do not weigh yourself daily. Limit it to around once per month. Checking your weight daily seems to be causing stress. Stress can cause depression and weight gain. So avoid stress. -
The Sleeve vs Bypass?
DaisyAndSunshine replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have PCOS and few weeks back I was in the same dilemma to choose Sleeve over Bypass after reading some of the sleevers here having lost the same weight to reach their normal BMI. But then some more research showed how Bypass patients in the long run have it little more easy to maintain the weight than sleevers. With PCOS I wanted 1 surgery to give me the maximum benefit, don't want to return back to the OR either! Ofc there's no guarantee what may happen in future and how many surgeries one may need. Plus many Bypass patients have also struggled with weight gain while many sleevers have kept it off. In the end this surgery is a tool and we definitely will have to work hard at it. But I feel more comforting with the Bypass decision than have a *what if* moment in future. Plus the risk of hernia and GERD is more with sleeve than Bypass. So I am in a happy place with the decision by mine to go with Bypass! -
Anxiety/Health Anxiety folks Help plz
Catahoula Mom replied to VivVsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been on Paxil for GAD since 2000 when I was 120 lbs of solid muscle. I've tried weaning down my dosage or changing meds and never been able to come off it. But, since it's cheap now, I don't think it's a bad thing to be on. It had nothing to do with my weight gain, btw. You should see your GP about trying a SSRI/NSSRI. You may be able to take it short term, as most people do. It should not medically affect your surgery in any way. Self medicating is always a bad idea, especially since (#1. you're not a doctor and #2.) valium can cause hypotension and reduce the amount of oxygen to the heart muscle, so if you were having a heart attack, would be more harm than good. p.s. I'm not a doctor either! -
Johnson and Johnson Leak
BetsyB replied to lambishop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Leaks are a possibility, but I wonder whether something else is at work. When you say you have no resistance, does that mean you don't have restriction? And that's been for the last month only? Has the weight gain you've experienced as a result been in the last month? What else has changed during that time? Was the loss of restriction gradual or abrupt? Sorry to pepper you with so many questions! In all likelihood, it's probably something more easily remedied than a like. You may simply need another fill---that need can arise even after a long period of good restriction. In your shoes, I'd schedule an appointment with my surgeon. -

Hello friends. I wanted to ask for some advice/encoragement. I had my surgery in Jan of 2010 and had lost 70 pounds! When I moved to GA in July I started gaining when I saw my new surgeon. After 4 months of complaining of hunger and weight gain(20 pounds!!!!) they finally dug deeper and found that I had a leak in the port. I had that replaced on Mon Nov 7th and at that time they also gave me a fill. I feel restricted and am back to eating my 3-4 oz portion meals 3 times per day and a protein shake in the morning between breakfast and lunch. However...my weight continues to go up!!! What gives?? I am soooo discouraged because not only was I so excited to finally start losing again, but sad because I can't exercise for 3-4 weeks. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in February so I had to stop running and will have to start all over again when they clear me for exercise. Could I still be retaining fluid from the surgery? My site is still a teensy bit swollen but not that bad...Any suggestions? I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do or what is wrong with me:-( Please help!!!
-
I have not had my surgery yet, but I really believe that when you are so physical while you where training your metabolism gets really cranked up so when you had your second surgery and you physical workouts have shrunk down so far your body is not burning as much, ie. weight gain or no weight loss...My husband is a runner and did the Marine Corps Marathon if he does not train for awhile he gains...How about walking some more and add hand weights to your routine? I live in GA, too and know you can find some really great parks with killer hills!!! You can do it just take a breath and move, move, move.....))) Stay Cool

Would you get another fill at this point?
elcee replied to kathyNH's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When you say you can eat more than you should be able to on what are you basing that? Are you really eating a lot or is it just that you have heard/read/been told that you should be satisfied on 1/2 cup of food or something similar? You have to be able to eat enough to keep you from getting hungry and to get good nutrition. If you serve your food on a small sized plate , eat that and are satisfied then you are doing great. Don't go getting overfilled just because you think that you should be satisfied on a miniscule amount of food. What is more likely to happen if you do this is that you will eat high calorie sliders that can cause weight gain, or you could get reflux or worse. Your loss of 5lb certainly sounds like you are in the green zone to me. -

Just wondering if anyone out there my have the same problem as me. I was banded mid May this year and have lost 40 pounds. I have had no fills. I feel great not too hungry and was losing weight so last week at my doc visit she said no need to fill as I'm losing just fine. OK well this week...I GAINED 4 pounds!!! I have never cheated I exercise at Curves 5 days a week. I eat 1000 to 1200 calories a day and 100 grams of protein. I can't figure this out. Except to say I was on HCTZ (a water pill) to help with my blood pressure and on Monday the doc took me off it and I have put on a pound or do a day. I'm soo afraid the weight won't stop coming back and afraid I won't get back to losing. Anyone out there have any advice?
