  1. Calories are always going to fluctuate a little anyway simply because you don’t eat the exact same foods every day. It’s why I focussed more on appropriate portions for what I ate & number & frequency of meals & snacks. I believe it always averages out. Like there’ll be days when you eat more protein & others when you’ll eat less. Same with fluids. Remember too though, your portions & calories are going to slowly increase as you progress until your weight stabilises & you’re in maintenance. I was told I would eat 1/4-1/3 cup from purée increasing to a cup at 6 months. You can always check with your team for additional guidance about what it appropriate for you at this stage. There are still days I can eat more than my appropriate portion or want an additional snacks. I tell myself I’m eating enough to meet my needs & if I want to eat more something else is going on (hormones, boredom, emotions, stress, etc.) & it’s not real hunger. Of course it took time to learn this. At times I still can’t eat all of my appropriate portion too. I’m simply not hungry, my tummy is being a bit odd or fussy, what I ate is sitting more heavily or is more dense, etc. I always believed it’s fine because I’m listening to my body which is more important.

    Candy Cane Revision

    Hi everybody! I just had surgery today for candycane syndrome and I was shocked at how much better the recovery feels vs the RNY I had 3yrs and 4days ago. Yeah, nearly had the fix surgery on the Surgiversary lol. My question is, what kind of initial diet did your doctors put you on for the first few months? I'm clear liquids moving into protein shakes while I am here in the hospital, but I am curious for after. I lost around 80lbs before I started gaining from this. Then, went from 135 to 154 literally in the blink of an eye. It's crazy. My phantom limb was huge! My stoma/fistula was over 10mm wide. It's crazy. How did the original dr not see it??

    No Energy Brain Fog

    You've given me some hope. I managed to find some protein powder thats made with stevia and not the joint inflaming aspertame or sucralose. Cost an arm and a leg but I'm at least starting to feel better. Nana naps 3 times a day for me but today I've decided to get my butt out of the recliner and make some crafts. It's only 6 am so we'll see how that goes. Can't wait to drop this weight and watch my grandson play some football.

My journey til surgery was 5 months I didn’t see my surgeon until I had completed all requirements of Medicare. started March 31st had 4 weight ins at my pcp office, a psych eval, a dietitian eval. An orientation at the local hospital. And 2 support meetings. Within 30 days I needed full blood panel, and 2 years of medical history provided by my pcp and a letter of medical clearance. Met with Doctors team leader 1st.. then 5 days later meet with the Doctor on a Tues Aug 8th Asked if fast track was ok … why yes it is. Scheduled me for the following Thursday, August 17. started my liquid diet the next day. I was his last for the day because Medicare required me to stay overnight, everything went great. I’m a week out and started soft food today. Hw 219.5 / Sw 202 / Cw 195.5 / Gw 140 I’m almost 67 and 5’ 2.5”

    Gastric bypass RNY 7/24/23

    I actually weight myself every single morning. It’s a Noom habit that I’ve formed. It works for me so far. I’m just gonna continue with to do that for now. I’ve already hit a weight stall at 3 weeks out. Honestly think it’s poop related. Prior to surgery I use to go 2-4 times a day. Now I’m every 3 days even with proper hydration fiber movement and probiotics. Guess that’s my new norm. If I go past day 3 my stomach bloats and I’m miserable as hell. So far it’s only happen twice. A new routine I’ve done is having most of my hydration in the morning. Water protein decaf tea and coffee. From the moment I wake up till around noon or 2pm. Lunch. Snack. Hydration again and dinner and or snack. Then finish the day with more hydration. If I try to keep the 30 min eat drink interval I don’t get enough hydration and I feel crappy. It works so far. Hopefully I wont have to change anything soon. Does anyone else have a routine they would like to share?
  9. At one month out I was just about onto tiny servings of proper food and I also couldn't stomach more than a few bites of whatever I had prepared. I did what Arabesque did and portioned and froze everything I did cook so that I could eat it later in equally tiny servings. Honestly OP, in a few months you will look back and treasure this time when you were so restricted. It does get easier to eat bigger volumes with time but the point of what we put ourselves through is to BE restricted and to use this restriction/time to lose weight. I wish you the best of luck.
  10. I had RNY and paraesophageal hernia repair on 6/12/23, Recovery has gone well as well as weight loss but I find that my exhaustion is overwhelming. I contacted my surgeon they suggested contacting my GP, She said she's certain it's just recovery. She didn't take any labs. Is there anyone else that has been dealing with this? And if so how do you get around the exhaustion?

    Pain after surgery?

    That's great you're meeting your goals. Energy, for me, improved when I started eating soft foods, around week 4 and consuming a bit more calories. It's hard to have energy with 300-400 calories a day. Now, I average about 700-800 calories per day and have loads more energy between that and exercising and getting the weight off. It takes a lot to move around a bunch of extra weight. It's important to keep moving. Walk daily, if you can, to improve your stamina. And once the doctor clears you, start adding weights to build muscle. Muscle loss can be a big issue with WLS because your body is trying to find an energy/food source. The goal is for your body to consume the fat for energy. You're not required to be the next body builder or get a gym membership (you can if you want 😊). Walking, biking, hiking, home exercises, and stretching are sufficient. Just keep your body moving and your heart pumping.

    One thing you can count on is that we all lose at our own rate - what’s right for us & our body & that’s a perfectly fine rate. There are averages & outliers ( those who lose faster & those who lose more slowly) but I always thought if my surgeon was happy with my lose I would be happy too. Your surgeon is happy so you can be too. You may also be experiencing a stall. The first is usually around week 3 but can be before or after that & usually can last 1-3 weeks. They can be extremely frustrating as the scale doesn’t move down at all & can even move upwards a little. Our bodies respond to the weight loss differently. Some people even say when their weight loss is stalling they notice their clothes are getting lower. After my weight stabilised my remaining fat seemed to resettle around my body. I went from having no shape to having a waist & hips again but the scale never changed. Maybe take body measurements & track those as well as the weight on the scale & see changes that way too. Maybe weigh& measure yourself less frequently so the drops are more noticeable. Celebrate every pound you lose. You’ll get where you need to be in your time.

    4 yrs post VSG to RNY

    My weight remained around the same but I had a revision at my goal weight. Also my surgeon was modest with the length of my bypass (less than 150) because he was adamant that I shouldn’t lose more much weight (his preference from his experience- YMMV) For me, It is not the same restriction as the VSG. The VSG was a mid chest tightness like something was stuck. RNY feels like a lower abdomen fullness of eating way too much. I always try to stop before I get to that point. But I can eat pretty much the same amount with the RNY as with the VSG. I hope that helps ❤️

    Slow poke

    From the day of my surgery in May till now ,I've only lost 14 pounds. That's in 3 months ! ( I've lost weight before the surgery,but I'm counting from the Day Of . ) But I've been losing inches ,gone off of a couple meds and my bloodwork has come back just about perfect. As much as I'd like to see the scale go down - I consider those things a victory Like everyone has said..."trust the program" .... it'll happen !

    4 yrs post VSG to RNY

    @GreenTealael Thanks for your post. How was your weight loss after the revision? Many have said they didn't feel any restriction like with the sleeve which was my concern. I am currently on my pre-op diet for this week, my revision surgery is scheduled for Monday Aug. 28th.

    Weight loss before surgery

    Were you given a plan to follow? Have you started meeting with a dietician/ nutritionalist yet? I know weight loss pre surgery (additionally to the specific pre surgical diet)is a requirement for many surgeons & insurances in the US. But the reality is we’re seeking weight loss surgery because we haven’t been able to lose the weight alone. If the surgeon isn’t happy ask for some help with an eating plan & referral to a dietician. This should show you really want to do something about your weight & are committed to the process. Start tracking everything every day too so you can show them what you have been doing. Fingers crossed for you.

    I'd hate for you to end up with an ablation for an issue that may just be caused by hormone fluctuations due to weight loss that will ease as your weight loss levels out. IUDs can be fussy things. My guess is that after surgery your hormones surged high enough to overpower the IUD's hormones and that's what caused the bleeding. It is also possible the lining hasn't shed properly either due to those hormones, or those hormones combined with the IUD and now you are stuck with daily breakthrough bleeding. Getting the IUD out might help or it may do nothing for the bleeding, it is hard to say. Did they do an ultrasound to see if the lining is built up? I'm really surprised everyone there is acting like they have no clue what caused this... This sucks! I can totally understand why you are miserable!

    I am so happy for you, Kay! What great changes. And I am thrilled to hear you have not been diagnosed with diabetes. Your efforts now will prevent that from happening. I am 60 yo and had my surgery on 7/31. My first post op check my BP meds were discontinued! My type 2 diabetes med was moved down to the lowest level and now my A1C is in normal range. This surgery is all about health for me (though I am enjoying the weight loss for sure...25 pounds lighter today and moving around I do feel lighter). Before you know it you will be off BP meds too. Cheers to health!

  21. I agree. I love my surgeon to pieces as a person. He is very compassionate and kind but that doesn't mean he's done a lot of revision surgery. I have coexisting Lipedema so I'm going to try to address that now instead. After learning more about it the Lipedema may be the reason for my weigh gain when I began menopause and is something I can't control through diet and exercise unfortunately. I've lost 27 pounds since I began working with the bariatric center and my legs have gotten bigger because of the fat disorder. It's a weird circle....chicken or egg? lol! Anyway I still haven't spoken to my surgeon but I have already reached out to 2 Lipedema specialists for consults to see what they say too Thank you so much and congratulations on your success! Keep it up!!!

    Some doctors require weight loss. Mine did. If I didn't loose it they would postpone the surgery. Every doctor is different though.
  25. Hi I am from a state where marijuana is totally legal. You might want to try a Canna-Tsu Hybrid strain, this strain reduces munchies and some people even lose weight. Basically look for lower THC, and higher CBD, and TCHV levels.
