Hello fellow lap banders. I am set for surgery in Tijuana Mexico with Dr. Ortiz on Dec. 2. I am trying to get as much information and support before the surgery and found this forum. I started my pre-op diet today and I am using the Premier chocolate protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and a lean cuisine for dinner. I can substitue another protein shake [i can see these getting difficult to get down] as long as it is under 250 cal. Any recommendations? Thanks

My Story- Diary of a Frantic Mom
klus263 replied to DDW98's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Does your bariatric doctor have any seminars or support group? Our office has a monthly seminar for people to learn about weight loss surgery options and also several different support groups for the band, gastric and sleeve. My husband went with me for the seminar and it helped him a lot in understanding more. At that time he felt he could still lose weight on his own. Now following my journey, he understands and is now in working to the insurance requirements to get the sleeved also. Maybe taking him to the doctor with you so that he could ask questions. Let him know that you want to become healhty for him and your children and this is best option for you and since your PCP that should definately help also. Good luck in journey. You will not regret it. -
Can you get hungrier after having a fill?
honk replied to Lunita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could be that your body is fully recovering from surgery and 1) your regular appetite has returned 2) your body had been existing on liquids for WEEKS and is roaring back to life. Think of how when you're sick and don't eat for a couple days. When you start to feel better your body goes nuts and wants to eat everything.

Do you have a food scale? Even now after many fills I still weigh all my Protein. It is really easy to over estimate and yes I use a small lunch size plate. During this time it IS a diet. You will need to not only actively have smaller portions but also make good food choices. I don't even use the Benecol margarine anymore if I need something I use "butter spray". I've stopped buying nuts (yes I know they be healthy but not when you eat them by the hand full); crackers/cookies (even low fat ones), cheeses (except for low fat laughing cow). Take a good look at your pantry and decide whether a thin person would eat what's in there. If not give it away. FYI I did not get any rescriction until 9.4 CC's. So you COULD be many fills away from feeling anything. -

BarbCB replied to juliesoft's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With my surgeon the post op diet he has outlined is clear Protein week one, then on to full liquids week two, pureed foods week 3, soft regular foods week 4....and then on to regular foods. Always eat protein first and then veggies and then carbs if there's room. And no drinking 30 min before , during or 30 min after meals. Good Luck! -
Decaffeinated Iced Tea!
abetterme4.2 replied to patsybrown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Iced tea seemed to be the only liquid (other than Protein shakes) that my sleeve likes/d. For 12 weeks, Water made me nauseated wether it was chilled, room temp, or hot. But iced tea, has been a saving grace. Enjoy the journey! -
Not loosing like I thought I would
abordenster replied to cbb2010's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 8 weeks out, surgery was 1/22/14. I haven't lost a lot of weight. I was 235 before pre-op diet and 220 on surgery date. I weighed in two days ago at my surgeons office at 209. He was surprised. Asked me if I eat sugar. Which I don't. But I did struggle in the first few weeks with food. I ate soups that were higher in calories just to get through the puréed and soft food stage. I add syntrax to my water and drink a protein shake in the morning. I take my vitamins every day. So at 7 weeks I am able to eat more dense protein and vegetables. I just started being able to eat what I need to and ignoring the other foods. I was happy it was all coming together. I weighed 214 at my primary doctor's on March 18 and 209 at the surgeons march 27th. But after meeting with my surgeon I was discouraged. I have lost inches. My neck is smaller and my old clothes are fitting. But looking at everyone's numbers after surgery and 8 weeks out I definitely feel like a slow Loser. It has been hard work so far. I'm not going to give up. There is some science to all this right? I'm working on adding more water and fiber.:/ -
Is it selfish to want to live a happy, healthy life? If so, then everyone is selfish. Is it selfish to want to feel good about yourself? If so, then everyone is selfish. Is it selfish to want to enjoy a long life of sharing, laughing, and loving with friends and loved ones? If so, then everyone is selfish. Is it selfish to accept a minimal degree of risk in exchange for an undeniably life changing option? Or is it just being an intelligent, courageous, rational human being? Selfish? Not from where I'm sitting. Scared? 99% of folks contemplating surgery are scared and the other 1% are liars. Courage is not about never taking a risk. Courage is not about never being afraid. Courage is about doing what you believe to be right and for all the right reasons - in spite of being afraid. You're gonna love the new you!!

New and sleeved on 6/16
CandyPants81 replied to juliesoft's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it probably depends on the surgeon. I just looked at my post op diet plan, and it looks like I'll start Protein drinks/shakes as soon as I get home. I'm glad I looked because for some reason I thought I was to do clear liquids ONLY and that I didn't start Protein shakes until week 2. I'd better get some clarification on that. C. -
Hell)o, I got my surgery in Mexico due to my insurance issues (Aetna). They sent me home with stage 1 clear liquid diet no Protein just juice, broth and Water. I picked up some Isopure as I am concerned about the protein. I don't know when I should be adding my protein whey shakes a little unsure as the Mexico Surgeon did not address this in the diets. Should I be introducing non Clear liquids yet? Any suggestions?

Happy 1 month anniversay!
sherrypep replied to hameed's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! I am one month out also. I was 164.5 after 16 months with a band and weighed in at 148.5 at my one month post op this morning. I havn't had many problems with food. I just stick with moist softer foods and chew really well. I love Greek Yogurt and it is only 80 calories with 14 grams of protein. Have you tried it? -
I am about 7 months out and have not had one single issue with my IBS since surgery. I used to have issues probably 3x a week. I self paid for the sleeve and I can say that just fixing the IBS was well worth the money. I do eat oatmeal almost everyday to stay regular with all that Protein. I also can eat anything and not dump. I am at goal weight and couldn't be happier. Good luck- LA

So I've already emailed my surgeon and my pcp, I am waiting to hear back. Mostly it won't be until Monday. So while I wait I thought maybe I could get a little insight from all you helpful people here. I have mitral valve regurgitation. I take heart medication to slow my heart rate Bc I was having insane racing of the heart. Two weeks ago I saw my pcp Bc the medication was making me dizzy. Well come to find out my blood pressure was dropping to low levels 92/58 and my heart rate was 42 Bpm. My dr lowered my dosage, I had signed up for the gym the day before and asked my pcp if I had any restrictions for working out. She said anything should be fine but I should wait to take my morning dosage of medication until after my workout. I have been following all her orders to the T. Here it is two weeks later I'm still having bouts of severe dizziness throughout the day. My trainer has me doing 40 minutes of cardio 5 days a week, 3 days of weights. I have felt awful for almost 3 weeks now. I feel like I am sick however I am not sick. After every workout I feel extremely nauseous, and usually come home shower and fall asleep the minute I sit down until I have to get the kids from school. My husband thinks I am hitting the gym too hard, for the amount of calories I get in a day. I am 3 months post-op and still only able to get about 500 calories a day. I try to eat more but I just can't, I start feeling like I am going to vomit. I get my protein and most of my water. I feel like Bc I was feeling this way before working out it could still be the heart medication even tho For the most part my BP and pulse are good. But the whole gym and lack of calories makes sense as well. Anyone have any advice?

Concerned--insurance is changing on 1/1/14!
SassyTink replied to Scylla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am sorry you have to go through this. Look on the positives, you are getting into really good shape for your surgery. Your liver is going to shrink quite a bit if you are sticking to the Protein first diet. BCBS was really easy to work with concerning approval and payments. The good news is they are very vast fast in getting the approvals to your Dr's office once it is submitted. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Patient endurance, you can do it. -
Basically a stall is where you don't lose any weight at all for a while. Could be a week, could be several weeks, could even be a month. But usually it seems to be a week or so. Every body will have their own pattern. The trick is to be more diligent with keeping a food journal, eating your protein, drinking a lot of water, and getting exercise. And then, at some point, you automatically drop like 5 pounds! It can happen a lot. Whenever it does, just get refocused on what you are doing, stop weighing yourself so much and focus on following the plan and being healthy. And don't get down when you are at a stall. THough that is easier said than done!!!!

Well firstly fruit juices of any kind have alot of sugar and calories so they are usually off the table. You do not want to waste calories with drinks as they dont fill you up with the exception of milk. Milk turns to a solid in your stomach fills you up and is a good source of Protein. Milk does have carbs though but they are good carbs and should be tracked.

Thanksgiving time.. input please.
Aggiemae replied to show1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The eating holidays are upon us. I and 13 days post op and still on thick liquids figure that by thanksgiving I should be able to have mushy food according to my recommended food list I can have 3-4 oz of food 3/4 of that being protein... You should tAke your scale or measuring cups. And, yes your family will probably notice,be polite, tell them your following does orders. Don't get involved in the "one piece won't hurt you" game. -
What does not having the uncomfortable feeling when eating anymore mean ?
BLERDgirl replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not uncommon to see a slight uptick when transitioning from liquids to solids and regular eating. Make sure you are meeting your protein and fluid goals and add in exercise as you heal. The scale should eventually start moving in the right direction. -
tried a new recipe tonight and it was so yummy and so far, easy on the stomach. Just moving on to soft foods and this is the first thing I made. I like it because my husband and I are finally being able to eat the same thing. Feels good to be able to make just one meal. Recipe: 2 lbs 93% lean ground beef 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (grated) 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs 2 eggs 1/2 cup fairlife milk 1 - 2 tbsp Italian seasoning (to taste) Garlic (to taste) 8 oz. mozzarella cheese cut into cubes (put in freezer for 20 minutes prior to making) Mix first 7 ingredients well and form into balls surrounding cheese cube. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes. Serve with marinara sauce. Makes 17 meatballs. Each one has 150 calories, 16 grams Protein and 3 carbs. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Congrats on your weight loss!!! You're doing really well. Sorry to hear that you are having a bad day. It does get better. I'm 5 months out and still have my days. Your hormones are all over the place and you will be up and down for awhile. Just keep sipping and get whatever Protein you can in and just keep working at it. Some protein is better then none at all. I still don't get my recommended amount but I keep trying every day. Keep your was up and it will all work out HW: 331 SW: 11/26/12 319lbs CW: 225 05/03/13 GW: 157

Having trouble! Stressing!!
honk replied to ashleigh81's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you weighing 3 oz of protein and eating low cal/fat/carb only veggies? If you don't measure you will overeat. -
Has anyone tried those? It's right next to the protein shakes and I've been looking at it. If you have tried it how many pounds did you lose?
-
Help????. I had my banding on the 14th and the headaches are horrible. Anyone else get them? I read because of high Protein. They actually knock me down!
