  1. Hey everyone my name is Dana I was sleeved on June 2 so far the process has been wonderful by my 4th day home I felt so much better and currently am experiencing no pains what so ever my only difficulties would be the amount of Protein I am consuming and I hope this won't affect my weight loss so far I am 15 pounds down I have been obsessively checking my weight every morning but the past 2 days have not lost a pound I hope this doesn't stay this way after seeing I lost one to two pounds per day seeing nothing has me a bit worried and of course I would love to shed the weight as quickly as possible I would love to hear more from others I enjoyed so far reading many post its exciting to hear the stories of others who have been sleeved so far. I am the only person I know to have done the procedure seeing what you guys write is very inspirational and helps me look forward to what awaits me *Dana*
  2. I lost 60 lbs in the 5 months before surgery. I knew I would just gain it all back without the surgery. I want to lose at least 75 more pounds. I love reading the success stories and find them very encouraging. I had surgery on 1/16/17, and I have not lost anything since. I am so afraid this will not work. I am 68, and have a bad back, so exercising is not easy. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Before surgery weight loss

Good for you for the pre-op weight loss! I lost 99 pounds (from 397 to 298) during my six-month, insurance-required diet program. It set me up for a successful surgery and post-op life. At first, I was worried that I wouldn't have as much success after the surgery, but I have. I've lost another 65 pounds since the surgery 3 months ago! Good luck as you continue your journey!

    Nervous, EXHAUSTED, but sooo excited

My surgery is at NYU Langone Medical Center. As long as you've stuck to the diet, I'm sure you'll be fine! I was afraid because I gained weight at first, but then loss it really quickly. You got it! We're almost done!

    loose skin

Ive started by getting a prescription for retin a from my derm incase I develop stretch marks and Ive been applying Vitamin e oil after every shower all over as well as taking a hair/skin/nails suppliment and drinking lots of Water. I havent been banded yet but I have been loosing steadily for last 2 months dieting I also just joined a gym. Granted none of it may work but I have to try lol and the girls are in the firmest support bras all the time now. We will see if it paid off in about a year so long as I keep it up. Eva

    Reset???

We don't have pouches.....we've got sleeves, whereas gastric bypass patients have stomach pouches with simple stomas. The 5-day pouch reset was thought up by a quasi-journalist who regained several years after her bypass surgery. It is designed for bypass folks, not sleeved people. You can certainly complete a pouch reset with your sleeve. However, it will be ineffective without a permanent lifestyle change. To bust your stall, start doing the things that resulted in your 90+ pound post-op weight loss. Stop doing the things that have resulted in your current stall/plateau. Good luck to you. You got this.
  7. Hi all!! I am only 3 weeks post op but I keep hearing about people losing their hair and that is kind of scarry....My surgeon told me that the hair loss is from the surgery and stress on the body and not from the diet. (as long as you get enough protein) Does anyone know this? When would someone start losing their hair? Also what is biotin and where do you get it??:confused2:
  8. Yes..I got approved...But it wasnt easy. The hoops I had to go through were.... 1.) A total of 7 of those once a month meetings....(6 months worth) It came out to 7 meeting though. 2.) Had to get on prescribed diet pills that lined up exactly the entire 6 months. (or more) 3.) A letter of medical necessity from the Dr. (easy if you got a cool doc.) 4.) An exercize consult. (Your surgeons office will tell you where to go.) 5.) A nutrition consult. (Your surgeons office will tell you where to go.) 6.) A psychiatric evaluation. (Your surgeons office will tell you where to go.) 7.) Proof of 5 years of morbid obesity. (or if you were at least 35 BMI with other complications.) 8.) Get your Dr. to also document that you have tried various over the counter weight loss methods. 9.) Get all of your records and copy EVERYTHING...For yourself and your Surgeon....Good luck!!

    From: Is This Self-Sabotage?

Ok I will be 3 weeks out on Wednesday. I went through something similar and I believe that's what caused my stall at a week and a half out. I wasn't eating crackers but I was making really cheesy dips that included chicken, velveeta cheese, etc. And I was eating snacks with my husband like a couple bites of cheesecake off his plate,a couple pieces of chex mix muddy buddy, etc. I had no room for the healthy stuff! At my one week post op appt my dr told me I was free to eat whatever(healthy) as long as I chewed it thoroughly and went slow. I started eating a bit of ice cream,a lil while later a couple bites of pudding,a while after that some of the velveeta dip stuff and so on...While I don't believe there is enough calories and or fat in the little bitty amounts I was sticking in my sleeve to make you gain a bunch of weight,I do believe all of this and the scale showed it with a 1 lb gain and then stall at a week and a half out: 1-Not eating planned out meals and just grazing throughout the day was getting in the way of my fluid intake. I had it in my mind that I could not tolerate protein shakes so that was being sabotoged as well, and none of these things are healthy. I was not coming to terms with the fact that my sleeve is still too small and new for me to be eating these things and still getting in the nutrition that I need. If I'm not getting in enough liquids or protein,my body is in starvation mode and will hang onto any little bit of fat it can to store for energy,I will feel weak and fatigued like I was,my hair will start falling out(one of my biggest fears). I gave my scale to my mom and made SURE to put lean protein foods first, and that's about all I can fit in my sleeve. My rule of thumb now is NO food goes into my mouth when I wake up until I have had at least 20 ozs of liquids,I follow that with a muscle milk light which has 20 grams of protein and my sleeve loves it compared to a protein shake. Then I have to have 10 more ounces of liquids b4 lunch. I can only stomach 1.5 ounces of chicken with hot sauce and a dab of blue cheese on it then I'm full. Wait about an hour and make myself finish off 10 more ounces of fluids before dinner. I then eat tuna, salmon, cheese,or chicken, something with protein for dinner. By then I have had more than 40 grams of protein and 40 ounces of liquids. I am free for the rest of the evening to drink liquids, eat a couple bites of SF pudding (I usually sprinkle some unflavored protein in it) or even eat a SF fruit bar-only 25 calories and soooo good! The reason I am saying all this is bc this: Since I put my foot down and started doing what I know I should be,my stall ended quickly and I have lost 3 more lbs in 3 days! I had to realize that I will eventually get to enjoy these things in moderation, but the whole reason I got the sleeve is so I can fill it with healthy, protein rich foods, vitamins and liquids consistently until my excess weight is gone. I will from now on save the junk food till I am farther out. That 1 lb gain and stall was enough to snap me out of it and remember what I was blessed with. Now,that being said it's just my opinion and I do believe everyone's body is different and everyone can handle things differently. I just kinda wanted to let u in on my experience thus far out and hope I can help in someway. ((HUGS)) and stay strong,we will get through this! Source: Is This Self-Sabotage?

I'll be sleeved in April, but am on a 1200 calorie restricted diet and when I look at the times when I definately plateaued or gained it was usually from snacking as you've described. A little nacho dip and a few tortilla chips, a little bit of a high calorie dessert like cheesecake. A couple potato chips with real sour cream dip, a tortilla with butter. Not much, but these items were dense and high in calories or fat or starch, enough to stall my weight loss. This journey I'm on now is about losing the excess weight and when I am on track, logging in my food and staying in my calorie range, with planned goodies so that I don't feel deprived, I continue to lose consistently. It just brings it home...the statement that the sleeve is just a tool in this journey of ours to lose weight. The proof is in the puddin !! Thanks for your post!!
  11. Hey! Nice to see ya on the boards. My weight loss was actually pretty fast. I lost 45lbs in about 2 months. I'm about a week from being 6 months out and I've lost a total of 67lbs. I haven't lost any weight in about a month now so I think my body has finally hit its "sweet spot". When do you see your surgeon again next? I see mine next week to discuss what happens now and other things on my to do list
  12. When I had my surgery, my surgeon found a hernia down by my cesarean scar. He said it would be repaired at a later date. Yesterday was my two month check up. I asked him about it. He said in about a year after the majority of weight loss is done, he would repair it and write it up in a way that a tummy tuck would also be done. I thought I misunderstood him, so I asked the nurse what did he mean. My insurance wouldn't pay for it, and I couldn't pay for a tummy tuck myself. She said I wouldn't have to. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
  13. I have Kaiser in NorCal, but I think they may have similar approaches. I think any weight loss is good, and my doctors have been pretty good about taking me at my word about my weight loss up til now. Once I was at orientation they weighed me and the expectation is you go in to get weighed at least once a month usually when you're having any of your follow-up appointments. The other thing to keep in mind is that you generally get weighed every time you have a doctors appointment, so if you've had a doctors appointment at any time before for another reason, they can look at their records to determine how much weight you've lost.
  14. In your shoes, what I would really want to know is just how malabsorptive he made it, as that influences both how you supplement in the future, and how you need to eat to lose the weight, as both will likely be somewhat different than with the mainstream procedures like the RNY or DS. The old purely malabsorptive procedures like the JIB worked fairly well, but had a lot of nutritional complications which is why they were abandoned. The RNY went the other way being primarily restrictive and works well with only moderate nutritional consequences from its mild malabsorption, but weight maintenance is only so-so. The BPD/DS hits something of a sweet spot in being moderately malabsorptive with a similar level of nutritional quirks and a more moderate restriction. The old Scopinaro was more malabsorptive and had more problems than the typical DS (that usually had about a 50cm common channel, compared to 100+ for the BPD/DS). One of the general rules-of-thumb that we discussed in the DS world is that with the DS, the sleeve (restriction) gets the weight off, while the switch (the malabsorption) keeps it off. The implication of all of this (from an amateur/non doctor perspective) is that if there is enough malabsorption to effectively take the weight off by itself (a la the old JIB or Scopinaro) then there can be excessive nutritional problems, or if the malabsorption is moderate enough to not cause significant nutritional problems, the weight loss may be marginal. I would assume (hope) that this is the case with what your surgeon did, and that you will have to work harder at the loss part of the equation, but will have typical DS/distal RNY nutritional quirks to work around. This is something that you really need to understand in working with your surgeon in the coming follow up visits. Good luck!

    sweet spot weight loss

It has varied with me from month to month. I haven't had a fill for about 6 months now. Have 3.8cc in my 4cc band. Have been at perfect restriction for quite a while. I have lost slowly, but steadily thru the past year. My largest monthly loss was 15 lbs, my lowest was 5lbs ( I only weigh monthly). I can eat about a cup and a half which works for me. As in everything, it varies from person to person. Only you and your doctor can decide what your perfect restriction will be. That will depend on how much you can eat, how much you are losing and how you do with the amount of restriction you have (ie....any reflux? heartburn? coughing? difficulty swallowing, etc.....) Discuss everything with your medical team. They are the experts and they rely on you to provide accurate information in order to help you succeed!!!

    sweet spot weight loss

    sweet spot weight loss

I was at my sweet spot for many months and lost most of my weight during this time. However, I only averaged about 1.5 pounds a week. I knew it was my sweet spot because the loss was steady and I wasn't hungry between meals and could only eat a limited amount of food before I was full. Really for me, I think the sweet spot is the point at which weight loss is no longer much of a struggle and it just happens if you are following the rules and exercising without feeling deprived. I would always lose a fast 5-10 pounds after a fill, but the sweet spot was long term with the 1.5 weekly loss on average.

    Howdy

Oh man, the cravings are so hard! Especially at first! They don't really go away but they get much easier. Especially once you feel restriction then things really get better. Congrats on the weight loss so far!!

What do you think - body image?

My Winnie-the-Pooh belly has gone down considerably but I've still got a pouch there. When I stand sideways in front of the mirror sometimes I push it in to see what that profile will look like if I keep working out as much as I can and continue to make excellent choices. But it's so much better than it was -- the spare tire. People gain in different ways and I definitely am a belly fat body type. I think my favorite part is the throat and chest, the collarbones, feeling more definition there. I've always thought my upper arms were fat, even when that wasn't possible. Now I've lost three inches on each arm -- amazing. Cannot even fathom that! I think measuring is really good, that and jean sizes, for letting me know what is real. Trying on clothes over the weekend that's what I felt like, "it's real, my weight loss is real, the clothes are smaller and they fit!"
  23. I am at my 60 pound loss now (banded 9/13/13). I did not exercise before my surgery, I was sedentary and I have a desk job. After I was cleared for exercise from my doctor, I have been working my way up with my exercise. I work out about 3 days a week at the gym and I walk alot more now. The body image part - I seem to be losing weight in my legs, thighs and butt area quicker than my stomach. I carried alot of weight in my stomach. I know that we have discussed this on different threads before, but what do you think of your body after losing weight?
