    Vegetarian meat substitutes

I get enough protein without meat I love No cow protein bars. If you need protein shake supplement Vega yea one I found I like. I am not vegan. I always ate a mix of vegetarian foods and meat but health reasons I slowly stopped eating meat. I did have eggs with a veggie burger (the actual vegetable style burger a way of getting veggies made in a way my gut could handle) Dr. Praeger's Cauliflower Burger and California Burgers have been my go to. I used to put egg on a small veggie burger. They have "Just egg" that is a vegetarian egg substitute that you can make your own scramble or omelette. There are many options not just beans. You can take plant based omegas, Bragg Nutritional yeast, Vitamin K to name three I can think of as top supplements. Protein intake is based on body weight and activity base protein is 0.36 grams Protein per 1lb of body weight. and more based on type of diet and activity level. too much protein actually converts to sugar. I am now working through some issues not related to my surgery. but have reached goal and maintained since my surgery 2019.

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

I was a vegetarian for 3 years before I deployed and couldn't maintain that diet without eating garbage as a replacement. I used to LOVE these Gardein Chicken stuffed with spinach things. I have looked high and low for them and they're not made anymore but man were they good. They came in like single serving packages with one loaf of chicken per package.

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

Here's another vegetarian post op meal: 1.5 oz of cauliflower mac n cheese, 1.5 oz of beyond beef, 1 teaspoon sugar free ketchup and chipotle hot sauce on the Mac n cheese (I like spicy food). Total 3 oz of food about, 150 calories and 12 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of carbs. I know it looks super ugly lol but it tastes great! I actually had the burger patty leftover from a restaurant. I had to go to a work dinner and I didn't want to deal with telling people why I wasn't eating so I ordered a beyond burger and ate a quarter of it (just the patty) and told everyone I was Low carb LOL anyway, the patty lasted me 3 days worth of meals so I stretched my dollar far too! Vegetarian meat substitutes

Definitely! We're here. There are some other great vegetarian and plant based threads on these forums. I also know some people go dairy free post op because they can't do lactose anymore. I haven't found that to be an issue yet but it happens. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I'm big on beans ... refried or just smashed. Lentils, split peas, quinoa. Maybe because it's been cold and I like something simmering? Baked tofu is tasty too (FYI I am not exclusively vegetarian... occasionally I'll eat chicken.) My band has encouraged grain protein far over any other product

    Who's benig banded on 11/20???

Marilyn, here's hoping that the fill turns things around for you. I can certainly understand your frustration. Enjoy the holiday season in the Windy City, and keep in touch- us teachers have to stick together. Towens, let us know how the fill went today. Great that you chose to get it done now, even though it'll make Christmas dinner a little harder to get down. Merry Christmas! Tlwempen, that's a good insight you had about wanting meat only because you can't have it. That's right, remember: "Meat is Clay" (kind of even looks like it a bit, doesn't it?)! Look at it this way - you'll go through this Christmas as a vegetarian. Whenever I want something I can't have, another thought that comes to mind is that I spent one week on a liquid diet and came out of it just fine - so do I really need "this" or "that"? Merry Christmas! All the best,

    not losing anymore!

Have you guys thought about high protein for 5 days, then high carbs for 2 days routine? You keep the calories the same. Apparently, some believe the body adapts to the high protein and you slow down the wt loss. I don't know, but yesterday I incorporated more carbs and finally lost a lb. Go figure..I don't know. Also, you know that vegetarians still get complete proteins by combining certain carbs, like rice/beans. Just a thought, I am thinking of trying this out this week.

    Dairy-Free Protein Shakes?

Unfortunately I have tried any dairy free protein shakes but perhaps look in some of the vegetarian/vegan posts on here, there may be some recommendations in them.
  11. Are you a vegetarian, June May? I only ask because you could be from your description, and obviously my suggestion won't work for a vegetarian. But. . . . meat, Beans, and cheese are good sources of Protein. I know, I know-- I'm stating the obvious! But, honestly, it sounds like you may want to lose more weight and that your goal is NOT maintenance. If so, obviously you realize you are doing too much non-nutritional snacking for a weight loss phase (buy yay for maintenance), and that daily diets of popcorn, chocolate, ice cream, and almonds are not going to help you lose even if you start with an egg in the morning. Don't get me wrong here-- I absolutely believe in eating "bad for you stuff" in moderation if you can handle it without binging or going off track. But without any more info, I wonder if you are handling it very well or if it has taken you off track, for the moment? Only you can answer. As for Petunia, I get why people got prickly at her response, but I absolutely reject the idea that someone who isn't banded or hasn't experienced something in life has nothing of value to add to the conversation. She's obviously in the thick of the education and preparation stage-- she has some very valuable bits of information in there, even if the tone rubbed the OP in the wrong way. I don't expect the OP to necessarily accept the advice, but the piling on of others is a bit much in my opinion. Keep posting, Petunia!
  12. She said i'll have to eat 100 grams of protein after surgery and this sounds like A LOT! No way i'll be able to do this! I feel like she has a problem with the fact that i'm a vegetarian. How do you guys eat after surgery? I hate this protein, protein, protein mentality.

    Protein

Do you worry about not getting adequate essential amino acids or do you consume eggs and or fish? I'm assuming eating eggs and or fish occasionally is what separates vegans from vegetarians? I'm definitely going to cut the red meat out of my life. I'm just now starting to research different types of foods and I think I'm leaning towards a pescatarian way of eating. I just feel better if I eat that way. Thanks for the link.

    Post surgery vegan chewable vitamins

When I was getting everything ready for surgery, I spent like an hour in whole foods in the Vitamin aisle. There are a lot of vegan/vegetarian Vitamins there. You may have to take separate vitamins to get the doses you need according to your labs. I am taking a chewable multi, liquid D drops and sublingual B12 right now. For the Vitamin D.... D2 is from yeast or plant sources, while D3 is usually from lanolin. this is a bummer because D2 is supposedly not readily absorbed by the body. After much consideration and soul searching, I decided to take the D3 because my blood levels were super low.

    Any vegetarians or vegans?

I am ovo vegetarian. Sleeve made me lactose intolerant. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. I dont think it is but would love to know how to get in 90-100G of protein in vegetarian food in around 600 calories without relying solely on Shakes. IF ANYONE has a breakdown of how they do it, I would follow it to a T because its impossible as far as I can see unless you have all greek yogurt and cottage cheese all day long... And no one should eat an all dairy diet.
  17. I had surgery about a week ago to repair a hiatal hernia, and at the same time my doctor performed an imbercation-basically he folded a bit of each side of my stomach over and sewed the edges down to reduce the sides of my stomach. Apparently it's a relatively new procedure for weight loss that they use for less extreme cases, which is leading to me having some trouble researching it. I'm assuming that my recovery will be similar to that of other weight-loss surgeries, as I had to do do two weeks pre-op resitrictive dieting, 3 days post-op Clear Liquids, and two weeks full liquid before moving on to soft/mushy foods. I'm having a really difficult time getting my required Protein. I barely want to drink Water or broth, much less a Protein shake. Yesterday was the day I was able to get the most protein so far since surgery-about 25g-and I woke up today feeling so sick to my stomach that all I've had is about 2 cups of clear broth. My protein goal is 60g, but the doctor said if I can make it to 40, that would be okay. I'm lactose intolerant (I was pre-surgery as well), vegetarian (though I will eat some fish), and can't have any artificial sweeteners. I was only able to find one Protein powder without any artificial sweeteners in it, and I mix it with almond milk. I think the thickness of the Protein shakes is what is grossing me out right now, but I don't know how else to get my protein in liquid form. No matter what I mix with this powder, it's really thick (even water. yuck). Help please! Also, side note (sorry this is so long!), did anyone have issues with a fever post-op? They kept me in the hospital 3 nights instead of 1 because I had a slight fever and low oxygen. Since coming home, I've consistantly had a low fever (99.3ish), usually in the evenings. The doctor said not to worry about a fever unless it was 101 or above. Is this common?
  18. Maybe I have just not figured out how to search the forums very well, but I am surprised that I have found so few posts about meal prepping / planning. I know this sounds pathetic, but I honestly thought the nutritionist fees that were part of my "package" would result in nutritional support that was more helpful. The post-surgery visits have basically involved the nutritionist/ nurse handing me papers with a list of what is okay to eat and what is not okay to eat. I envisioned that nutritional support would involve helping me plan meals tailored around my needs (I am pescatarian). I feel stupid because I cannot find any materials or supports for meal prepping/ planning (just general "do eat" / "don't eat" guidelines). I am almost 5 months out and have been at the same weight for about a month (60 pounds down, but holding still). I am supposed to only eat three meals and get 60+ grams of Protein, <30 grams of fat, and between 30-60 grams carbs. I have found myself wanting to snack but figuring out healthy, meatless options that are not high fat (e.g., cheese, peanuts) has been a struggle. I have read a couple of books that had a few ideas and I have joined the WLS Vegetarians Facebook page, but I feel like I am looking for help that does not exist. I feel like I am struggling to figure out a plan so that I don't yield to whatever is on hand when I am feeling hungry. I would like to meal prep for a week at a time, but a lot of the ideas I have found for that are high in carbs or contain meat. Is there a way to get help with meal prepping/ planning (real help - not just "here is your list of what to eat.")? Do you know of resources that have daily meal plans? Tips and tricks for retraining my brain away from head hunger also will be appreciated.
  19. Help!! My surgery date is march 4 and my dr requires his patients to do medifast. I eat no meat no fish no eggs no jello and refuse to eat anything with artificial sweetner. First of all they really did not have many options for me to eat most of their soups have meat or meat broth in them. I am allowed 5 medifast products a day along with sugarfree jello, sugarfree popcicles, sugar free drinks and broth. My dietecian dosent seem to really have any options for me. yesterday was my first day I tried the tomato soup, maple oatmeal, vanilla shake, and carmel nut bar. This stuff is soo gross.... I was so hungry and felt light headed and very cranky. I could not make it thru one day I already cheated. I ate 4 saltines with my soup and a bowl of plain lettuce last night. I feel like such a looser. I could not even stick to this for one day. I know part of the preop diet is about loosing weight but the main thing my dr. does it for is so the liver will shrink. Will eating things like plain lettuce and mabey some other low carb veggies really hurt? thanks!

    I'm a vegetarian: pre-op & post-op HELP!?

Thanks for the ideas! How do you handle your "clear period" as a vegetarian? I wish there was something to substitute the chewing action of jell-o, 2 weeks seems like a very long time for veggie broth and popsicles, but I guess I'll have to do it!

    I'm a vegetarian: pre-op & post-op HELP!?

Post-op look up feedyoureye, she has been a vegetarian for years and has been doing wonderful with her sleeve. Post-op, tofu and other non-meat products like Gardein are great for acquiring protein.
  22. The list of things we can consume is a small one as it is, but I find as non-meat eater it's extremely limited. Jell-o is derived from pigs (gelatin), broth is from chicken or beef...did anyone manage to stay vegetarian on the pre-op and post-op diet, and feel ok?
  23. Do you ever use agar flakes to sub for Gelatin in recipes? I used to make gelatin from agar agar and juice - you just boil it and chill it afterward. It's not quite the same as Jello brand but it's pretty close. I also remember finding a vegan gelatin at Trader Joe's one time. Check that out. Oh, and I think I read once that the Dole fruit cups (those have canned fruit in them, so they aren't perfect) are vegetarian (not vegan) so that might be an option. I know your broths will get boring but don't forget to mix it up as much as possible with something like the Better than Bouillon vegetarian mixes - mock beef and mock chicken blends that you can flavor a number of ways so that it doesn't get too boring. Consider making your own sorbets (or buying them) from pureed fruit and simple syrup as a change of pace from plain old popsicles. The secret, in my opinion, is to spice things up with as much flavor as possible when your diet is limited. Intensely fruity sorbets and spicy vegetable broths will be far more satisfying that a can of veg broth or a grape popsicle! Post op you'll be fine, especially in the states where meat substitutes abound. And as a pescatarian you'll have even more options! The clears/liquids get boring for everyone, though, you just have to get through it. Hopefully you'll have enough suggestions from folks to help you through. ~Cheri
  24. Anyone here read the book [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Skinny-Bitch-Kim-Barnouin/dp/0762424931/ref=pd_sim_b_img_1]'Skinny Bitch'[/ame] or the follow-up [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Skinny-Bitch-Kitch-Kick-Ass-Recipes/dp/0762431067]'Skinny Bitch in the Kitch'[/ame]? These books have totally changed how I veiw food, and I am now vegetarian... working on Vegan status. And I'm buying organic foods when available. I'm also putting forth an effort to read ALL food labels... It's amazing to me how many of the 'veggie' foods (like Boca and MorningStar and GardenBurger) are NOT Vegan! Most of their products use milk, egg, and cheese! There are good totally meatless 'veggie burger' items out there... it's all about reading ingrediants and "trusting no one" as they say in the books. Anyone have anymore good Vegan books or cookbooks you'd like to recommend?

    'Skinny Bitch' Revolution!

A vegetarian does not eat any meat or meat products but still will consume eggs, dairy, honey, etc. A vegan does not eat anything from an animal source. No eggs, dairy, honey, etc.
