  1. I thought this was pretty interesting. I found my experience to be the same not only this most recent surgery, but for the past 8+ years, my hospital offers an a la carte menu and allows the patient to pick or choose their own meal selections--even if you are on restricted diets aka diabetic or cardiac diet/low sodium, etc. I wanted to share my menu and thought it was very user friendly. It showed the total carbs for each selection and defined the caloric parameters of "mindful selections" which made it super easy to make healthy choices! (Even when I was on clear liquids!!) So maybe they ARE "getting it"? When I wasn't NPO (nothing by mouth) or on clear liquids with broth (delicious) + SF jello + iced tea + decaff black coffee, I chose the baked white fish (zero carbs without the breading) + green beans + fresh fruit cup and light yogurt for my challenge meals. I only ate about 1/8cup total volume of solids, so didn't worry about how many carbs/sugars in the Yoplait Lite Yogurt...meh. Some areas could use improvement...lol, but hey, it's a start!
  2. I'm three years out next month. I'm down 150 pounds. I compete in a sport at a national level and I'm in my mid 50s. When I went to the "final" stage, I was a bit scared too. My days are easiest if I keep my diet simple -so I've developed a routine, but I feel free to eat almost anything occasionally. Breakfast - either a protein shake with fruit and milk in it or greek yogurt with fruit and a tablespoon of granola Lunch - grilled protein of some kind (4 ounces) with a salad with about a tablespoon of dressing Dinner -whatever I make for the family. Tonight it was a 6 ounce pork chop baked with some barbecue sauce on it. If I'm working out alot (which I do) I increase my carbs so I don't cannibalize muscle. It will take some time to find what works for you, but don't be scared Try one food at a time and see what happens. I still can't really eat pasta - maybe 1/4 cup and then I feel like crap for a day or two but sometimes the craving is strong. Take your time. Don't be afraid. Do it one step at a time.

    new to post surgery

I had gastric sleeve on 7/1, and I'm on full liquids still until tomorrow (a full two weeks). I've been doing a lot of protein shakes, fully blended soups, and a bit of greek yogurt or blended cottage cheese. Sounds like maybe the mashed avocado was too thick this early for you. I'm really missing textures, but my surgeon recommended purees for 2 weeks starting tomorrow. So at that point I'll start trying out refried beans, baked ricotta, well-mashed sweet potato or avocado, thicker soups (still no chunks), pureed egg salad etc. Maybe also half an avocado was too much fat? At this stage it's probably enough to just have a couple bites of something richer. I love avocados too, so looking forward to slowing add those back in.

    Before and After Pics

It is truly amazing . The albatross around my neck is gone! I do have to think and plan more - I bring little things of yogurt and cottage cheese and string cheese with me and buy some protein snacks, but the organization I now have to do is really worth it . I make sure I drink a lot of water but after 7 months the lifestyle and patterns are engrained . You will do great ! Just commit urself that for the first 3 months u will be perfect , then the habits are there !

    Post op diet

3 days clear liquids, 11 days full liquids. Though it seems there's some variation in what is considered "full liquid", like my list doesn't include the cream soups even though I am allowed pudding, yogurt, sherbet. I'm sticking to my list though since we're talking just 4-5 more days, it's just not worth quibbling about. Which I think you figured out too, lol.

    Pureed Stage

Dr. Brian, with all due respect, as a food addict I fully understand the need to have "palatable options" for eating. But let's examine the psychology of your question. OK? You are looking for a "tasty" food fix. But that's the exact thing you want to try to find a way to overcome. It takes a mental re-framing. Instead of looking for rewarding food experiences, look for foods you tolerate, that offer deep nutrition or the biggest bang for your nutrition buck, and that stay down well and help heal your body. Embrace BORING. Embrace low reward. Embrace KISS. Embrace interacting with your food as little as possible for as short a time-span as possible. Why? Cuz it's in the honeymoon phase that you have the ultimate opportunity to RESHAPE and reframe your relationship with food. Believe me, once your gut microbiome gets on board with your plan, you start to crave "boring" clean foods over the craptastic high-reward foods that got us our lifetime invitation to the Obesity Ball. Embrace: protein drinks (for now) yogurt low fat cottage cheese soft scrambled eggs tuna salad made with cottage cheese and mashed hb egg soft boiled eggs chicken salad made like the tuna salad sf jello sf popsicles And be done with it. Make it no-brainer repetition. Because all too soon, your struggle will get worse and then you will be asking for advice on how NOT to eat the slice of pizza or 3... I come to you not judgementally, but as someone who has walked in that trench and has discovered new ways of thinking.

    Pureed Stage

Good Evening Super team! Any tasty pureed or soft food recipes to recommend? I had a tea spoon of Tilapia; I have had yogurt, cottage cheese, and can tolerate a scrambled egg.

    pouch reset

Yesterday I had two hardboiled eggs, two protein shakes, and a yogurt. Down over a pound (although I'm sure that's water weight, lol). So far today I've had one shake and one tiny egg white... thing. Planning on one more shake, another egg, and a yogurt.

Definitely give them a call but you can get some idea of what to do by looking at others diets on here. I'm allowed sf jello, sf pudding, low fat cream of soups strained, sf popsicles, v8 or tomato juice, 100% fruit juice, 3 protein shakes/day, yogurt etc

    pouch reset

Yeah, I am going to have 2-3 protein drinks today (soy protein isolate) and one hard-boiled egg for lunch. Possibly a yogurt in the evening. Going to do that for 3 days, then wean off the shakes to some purees.

    SUGAR

I understand what youre going through. What worked for me was going cold turkey from sweets. I planned it so I had several days off work, so i could go through the irritable headachy part of withdrawal at home. I still have mild cravings for sweets but right now yogurt with granola helps.

Why no yogurt in first 2 wks post OP?

I wasnt aloud to have yogurt my doc said not till after the first month but i did anyways that was the only way i was able to get protein in at that point. I called my docter at 2 weeks and said im not getting enough protein like literally 12g the whole day and i refuse to drink another protein drink and i told them i put myself on protein yogurt i was getting over 30g with just that and the doc said if it didnt hurt and i was still losing then great... ( not saying u should go rouge like i did ) best of luck!

I give up on protein :(

I never drank a protein shake one. I tried many, but couldn't get past the smell. I drank fairlie milk and high protein yogurt starting the second week. I'm 4.5 months out and get enough protein from food. Good luck!
  16. There is not a single set of rules that are the same. Every doctor seems to have a different set, so? Mine didn't allow JELLO. No jello, no pudding. I could have yogurt if it was drinkable. And I could have all sorts of fattening soups, as long as they were blended. *shrugs*

    Pounds lost

The foods you made sounds awesome. I’ve made chia seed pudding with Greek yogurt and cream in the past. I haven’t made it yet post op. Sorry my reply turned into a long winded message ... I’m in Florida too. I went to Shillingford but it didn’t work out and I ended up going to Cleveland Clinic. I needed gastric bypass due to severe GERD and Dr. Shillingford didn’t even discuss it. He made a lot of assumptions without hearing me out. Insurance doesn’t count metabolic disorders as a comorbidity, I had enough of them but never had high BP and did everything to prevent diabetes due to pcos. I didn’t have the energy to prove my sleep apnea. I couldn’t deal with a sleep study. Even fighting my weight I ended up hitting the 40 BMI mark. I dreaded that. It was an endocrinologist that helped confirm having bariatric surgery was my last method of treatment, or at least a tool to help fight my weight against several metabolic disorders. She referred me to Cleveland clinic. The one 4th of July bbq I went to was tough. All my mother’s friends. I ended up doing the work rather than eating anything. It was Saturday and rained on an off. (Drenching rain) Besides the person who always mans the grill, and my mother, no one did anything except say where’s the food. I felt like if I didn’t help, no one would halve. At one point I had to hold an umbrella over the grill. Would have been funny had I not been exhausted. I wasn’t feeling well so had not planned on going but my mother wanted me there. I haven’t been able to shift past let alone into the purée phase. (And I’m about 9 weeks in, I should have been moving into phase 4) There wasn’t anything I could eat. That didn’t bother me as much as being asked how I am knowing they expect me to say just fine, if I say otherwise it’s, it’ll get better or but you look good. Words hard to deal with because of living with lifelong chronic illness that no one can see. I will never be better. But need to get to a healthy weight to ease some of the burden on my messed up body. I have a upper endoscopy the 11th, I’ve got some kind of hiatal hernia, a stricture (3mm narrow gastrojejunostomy) and a Schatzki ring. I don’t know how the doctor will address that since I didn’t hear from them about the gi fluoroscopy results that showed these things. I’m almost tempted to cancel the endoscopy. I’m also seeing a neurologist about dysphasia separate from those things. I guess I’m just not good around people. I don’t expect anything. Definitely not pity. And I don’t mind helping either. But when I feel like that’s all I’m good for even though my body took a heavy beating from doing so ( and no one can see it) I don’t feel very welcome. Sorry. I have rambled on. My weight is going down thankfully. Sometimes it stays the same for days on end. I weigh myself each morning after I’m dressed. I mark it on a calendar I printed out. I started taking some notes on my tablet for each day my weight and what I’ve “eaten” calories and protein. To make sure I get at least 50 grams of protein. I have the same protein shake almost every morning mixed with ripple milk. To get 30 grams. Probably is not smart but I haven’t eaten lunch. I get the rest of my protein at dinner. I’ve read some research that it’s good to have protein at rest, vs prior to exercise. im always worried my metabolic disorders will get the best of me And sabotage my efforts as it did before. How few calories should a person eat. I thought I was doing alright before, I didn’t eat sugar, ate low carb ... everyone talks about exercise. I cannot. It’s hard to get even doctors to understand that I’ve one of few medical conditions that exertion causes literal damage and worsening of my conditions. Just doing what needs to be done takes it all out of me.

Why no yogurt in first 2 wks post OP?

Why? Mainly because it's your doctor's orders for you. It's what he/she prefers for your best outcome. Many/Most docs prefer clear liquids for the first week; then advance to full liquids, etc. Compared to Jello, tea and broth, yogurt is more solid, more dense...and is considered a full liquid (or even a soft food, depending on what's in it). So, just follow your doctor's orders for a few more days at this stage. Why chance it?

Why no yogurt in first 2 wks post OP?

My diet is clear liquids for 4 days and then full liquids for 10. Yogurt was in the full liquids stage for my diet.

Why no yogurt in first 2 wks post OP?

I was allowed yogurt and low fat cream soups (cream of mushroom etc) but I had to strain the soup to get the chunky pieces out.

Why no yogurt in first 2 wks post OP?

I was also allowed yogurt. The first 2 weeks of my plan were full liquids.
  22. I was allowed yogurt, but some surgeons insist on clear liquids only. Jello would be considered a clear liquid
  23. I'm confused why I can have jello but not yogurt on the first few wks post surgery. Does anyone know why ? Thanks ! Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app
