  1. Was feeling kind of down because I had a week where I didn't lose any weight. A very wise bander suggested enjoying a Non-Scale Victory -- I thought, nothing feels as good as seeing the numbers go down on the scale. Omg was I ever wrong!! Just for the heck of it, I tried on a pair of jeans that I could not even wiggle past my hips prior to my surgery on September 5. Lo & behold... they slid on easily!! I immediately dissolved into tears because it was a precious moment for me. And, then, I got it -- I had a NSV!! I won't call it my first because, quite frankly, I've had many that I've failed to acknowledge - all equally important to my journey but overshadowed by my obsession with the numbers on the scale. I'm not getting on the scale every day anymore, I'm curbing that -- slowly. It's more like every other day (I know, I know... not much better but I said slowly...). I don't use the numbers as validation anymore because I know the weight will come off. Why? Because I'm doing everything right -- I'm not cheating & I'm committed to a healthier me! I deserve this & I'm not going to stop. And, once I found some peace -- I lost 2.5 pounds. Who knew? Lol! Anyway, thank you for all the words of encouragement, sharing your stories & the sound advise. This journey forces you to get to know yourself in ways that are unfamiliar & sometimes scary, but there's so much joy when you just trust the process & believe in yourself!! Thank you for listening!!
  2. I WISH I'd taken many pictures before surgery, but I only had a few. I'd suggest definitely taking some photos now, before WLS. See post here: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/310322-are-you-pre-wls-take-pictures-now/. I also wish I'd taken measurements pre-op. My first measurements were 2 weeks post-op. Do it now as a baseline. --I only post and read messages here at BP. --I keep a small [5.5" x 7.5"] notebook on my bathroom countertop and I weigh every day, or every other day, and record numbers in columns: Date/POD#/Wt. At the end of each month's mark (my surgery was Dec 4th), I might tally my weight loss for that month. Oh, that notebook has my SW and date noted somewhere in the beginning. Also, on the back pages of the previous logging page, I sometimes have notations about [whatever--NSVs; potato chips I ate; how much I "danced, and wow, look," etc.] So the notations are opposite the page for the curent weights/dates. --Every month (or two), I measure myself: Neck, breasts, waist, abdomen, hips, rt/lft thigh. And just last week I added measurements of my ankle and a wrist. I want to see the tally of pounds and inches at one year.

@@n0ble199 Wow you look great!! Congrats! Today is my 3 months surgiversary! (Sleeved on 07/07/14) I've lost so far 39 lbs, and today for a tiny NSV -- I went to H&M and bought a cardigan because it's getting colder. I can wear a size M! M!! I almost couldn't believe it. Before I couldn't squeeze in even size XL of this shop and now I'm fit perfectly in a size M (not even tight!). It's a good day, wish you guys all the best!

    February Surgeries

Thank you ClaireC. I have been practicing my post op behaviors now so when it's real it will be second nature. I am quite ready to be thin and healthy again. Next week I have a follow appointment with the NP and dietitian. Just by being mindful of my eating, according to my him scale I have lost 10# since my first appointment sept 23. I have many post op nsv's on my bucket list. Thanks for the encouraging words. Hope to talk again :-D Bear

    Who Are You?

I am 45, have three kids, 26, 15, 12. Married to my second husband since 2006. He is the only one I count. I have a BFA in fine art and a BA in ceramics. So of course I am an accountant, lol. I groomed dogs for many years until my wrists gave up. Sucks because I was really good at it. I now have three dogs we show in rally and obedience. I miss my clay and my studio. I do a lot of crafty stuff to fill the gap so if you need a crochet hat I am your girl. It is something that bothers me a lot and a big NSV I want is to re establish my studio and be an artist again even if it's only weekends. Having surgery November 12. It's taken since April to get here. Just so many obstacles. My husband is awesome. I am not worried about his support. He is paying for surgery and a few years ago I lost down to 145 on medifast but it came back. He loves me fit or fluffy thank god. He had prostate cancer surgery in February. All is well health wise but intimacy is not a go at this time. Still healing. Makes me sad, but I know we will get there together and the cancer is gone which gives us the time to do so. So I am a wife, a mom, a puppy caretaker and I try to be a really good person. Hoping for my health to return quickly. I am tired of dragging this weight around. Best wishes to all! Vicki
  9. NSV is a Non Scale Victory. Like fitting into smaller sizes, being able to exercise more, fitting into an airplane seat without a seatbelt extender etc.
  10. Please somebody explain what this is. THANKS! !!

    An unusual NSV

Bonus round NSV..I never could have flown across the country at 316lbs, would have been too uncomfortable. But this flight was awesome..Why? Because for the first time ever I flew without asking for a seat belt extender. Not only did I not need it, I had a few inches of excess belt!!! Wooo Hooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

    An unusual NSV

I had a friend point this out to me as sort of a NSV. It is actually something that never would have happened if I had not had the surgery and lost weight.. I had a small claims case filed in my hometown court. It was a family member who I helped out and was supposed to pay me back, but never did. Long story short I wanted what he owed, so I filed the case. On Sept. 23rd I received a UPS envelope that contained a letter from the tv show "Hot Bench". It is a new daytime court show featuring a three judge panel. They found my case filing and were inviting me to have my case heard on the show. At first I thought I was being punked, no way this was true. I did a Google search and hound out the show was legit. I decided what the heck and replied to them. Less than a week later I was on a flight to Los Angeles!!! We taped the show Tuesday the 30th and I was heading back home Wednesday. It was completely surreal and hard to believe I really went to Hollywood and will be on tv. ( Air date of the show is unknown right now) I never, ever would have considered being on tv at my former weight. Even the size I am now I felt a bit odd, but not enough to keep me from a once in a lifetime opportunity. When do you get an all expense paid trip out to LA and the chance at 15 minutes of fame? ( Literally - 15 minutes. Half hour show split into two 15 minute segments...LOL) It was pretty amazing. And while I cannot tell you the outcome of the case I will encourage you all to watch "Hot Bench" and be looking for me!!!!

August post op sleevers: Check in

don't be nervous. Those are awesome nsv's! Keep us posted.
  19. Have my 6 week checkup on Monday and am NERVOUS. I haven't lost as much as I feel I should have. Don't want to be disappointed but afraid I might be. I have lost 2 pant sizes since surgery and almost 2 shirt sizes. The numbers don't reflect that though. But on the other hand NSV of sitting in a normal lawn chair without overflowing it and being able to reach my feet and still be able to breath! I know sounds silly but I couldn't do it before.
  20. I'm still not always thinking like a thin person. I took out my jeans this morning and just before I put them on, a quick thought went through my head that they wouldn't fit. I knew they would but I still recall easily that fear or unease every time I'd put on my pants when I was obese. I always feared they wouldn't fit and that fear is still there obviously. It's especially hard now beacause the jeans are really small and I don't realize that I'm small alot of the times. Still working on body image issues though it is getting better. The other random thought today is that we really really need to not obsess over the scale. I admit I weigh myself daily. I do it because it helps me early in my maintenance phase. Having said that though, the number cannot determine our outlook for the day either. I went out to dinner Wednesday night and again last night. Wednesday night I had grilled fish, a couple of shrimp, veggies and a little bit of couscous. When I got on the scale in the morning, the number was the same as it had been for several days. I was a little surprised since I've been very compliant. So last night, we went to a restaurant that's supposed to have the best Pasta in all of NYC. My sister in law is leaving for Beijing on Wednesday for work and will be gone for a year. She wanted her last meal in NYC to be her favorite food so we headed to Porsena even though pasta is my trigger food for sure. Well...I stayed in control but ate more carbs than usual. After all...it was the best pasta in the city. (It was really good..lol) I also had a little bit of dessert and two glasses of white wine. So I got on the scale this morning and figured I'd be up at least a pound if not more. I lost almost a pound instead. Just shows you that it's only a number and the numbers can move without rhyme or reason. I'm not feeling like I dodged a bullet today, nor do I feel bad if the scale doesn't go down or stay the same when I'm being especially compliant. I focus on the NSVs instead. The best one last night was not that the food was terrific (which it was) but I walked home from the restaurant. I went across town and had no real issues doing it. A year ago I was bed ridden and days away from my hip replacement surgery. Walking home from the restaurant was better than any number on the scale. OK, sorry for rambling...have a great day, and a great weekend everyone. For those who Celebrate Yom Kippur, have a good holiday and an easy fast.
  21. The NSV's are important as my weight loss is very slow. My daughter doesn't know about the band. I see her watching my shrinking body and hoping I don't fit into her jeans one day. Wink! Wink! We shall see

  23. Ok, interesting NSV. When I walk up stairs, I notice my legs not rubbing together as much. Like I can actually realize a thigh gap. TMI, but I don't ever remember having one when I was younger HA!

  24. Ok, so it probably didn't. But I've had abnormal PAPs for the last 7 years. I get checked twice/year and it ranges from From atypical to high grade. I've had 4 LEEPS, 5 biopsies and a conization. I can't believe I even have a cervix left after all the bits and pieces that have been removed. Two years ago I finally said fuckit....unless it comes back high grade again or precancerous, I'm not having anymore procedures...obviously the aren't working. Well I just got my most resent PAP result and it was normal! My OB/Gyn emailed me herself she was so excited. I'm chalking it up to outstanding nutrition over the last 10 months since surgery. Very nice NSV!

About using HP stalls. I still use them because the toilets are higher and my back and knees are very bad. Nothing to do with weight. Losing weight has helped the knees but I was told around age 40, I would need 2 knee replacements. 64 on Saturday and I have no plans on having that surgery. Rather live with pain, which isn't too bad. I had fallen and really screwed up my knees, A restaurant's side walk had a hole, the light bulb was out and it was dark out. I was wearing flats at the time, too. After many years of PT etc. I ended up with less than $5k. The back, the discs are shattered with arthritis and the lower discs have no cushion left between the bones. Weight loss, I think has helped a little. That I guess is a NSV. Raining hard in Boston today, yesterday and maybe tomorrow. This weekend is Yom Kipper, Happy New Year to everyone who celebrates. Arlene
