    Vegetarians and Vegans

Hi Acadia! I am a former lacto-ovo vegetarian (for 5-6 years) in the late 1990's-early 2000's. I have not eaten red meat since I was in college 20 years ago. Now I mostly eat fish and some poultry, dairy and soy products for my Protein. One of the dietitians strongly suggested not to go back to a vegetarian/vegan diet post WLS. However somewhere down the line I'd like to cut back even more on my animal intake. I'd love to see some of your resources.... add me as a friend if you wish And congrats on your surgery!!! Susan
  2. I understand. I'm a vegetarian and it's very easy to get sick of foods you eat day in and day out. I still crave meat and I haven't eaten it in 16 years. But I do eat fish a couple of times a year and never think twice about it. It's one of the healthiest animal products you can eat. I'm actually pretty bummed I may not be able to eat the amazing vegetarian sushi a local restaurant used to make just for me.
  3. I've been a vegetarian since 1995; 90% of my meals are vegan, I eat fish 1-2x a year, will eat bread that has milk and eggs in it, and will sometimes eat an egg. Prior to two car accidents I was a body builder and have learned how to get up to 120 g of Protein on a vegetarian diet without using dairy or eggs. I have dozens of vegetarian recipes, resources, and 16 years of experience for anyone interested in vegetarianism. As for being a vegan 100% of the time, I love cheese and just haven't found an ideal goat cheese substitute. There are great regular cheese substitutes for those wondering. So if you would like to talk about being vegetarian maybe this topic will help.
  4. Hello and thanks for your post. I have been a vegetarian before and even vegan for a short while - back then I found dairy too hard to give up but believe I can do it now - but back in my previous veggie days I never paid a lot of attention to how much protein I was taking in. So that will be a new angle for me with the band. I have many reasons for wanting to get back to a vegan diet, health being an important reason but also have concerns about the environment and the cruelty to the animals we raise in such horrible conditions so that we can eat them. I will take your advise and post on the post op boards - thanks for that suggestion :-) Hi there, I'm a fish-eating vegetarian or a pescatarian (I am not really a fan of that word). I've been so since October of 2008. I was banded last month. I, too, intend to go vegan at some point. I think it would be pretty easy to do it with the band. The majority of your protein would probably come from soy protein shakes. I found one organic whey protein but I think I might be lactose intolerant so I couldn't use that one. I ate a lot of vegetarian fat free refried beans, lentils and tuna on my mushy stage. For my liquid stage, I used mushroom stock and vegetable broth. If I were you, I might retain a solid protein - like fish - until you really have the hang of getting all your protein in without it. The band is pretty limiting at first and, for me, I had two years under my belt without meat so it wasn't too difficult to figure out how to use what I normally ate with the band. Best of luck to you! You might also want to post this on the post-op thread because I think you may get more responses. I've run across a few people here who are vegetarian.

  6. My surgery is scheduled for 2/28/11. Are there any vegetarian or vegan banders out there? I am slowly working my way back to being a vegetarian (was one for a few years back in the 70's - 80's) with the ultimatee goal of becoming vegan. Just wondering how it is working the band as a vegan....

    B12

The B12 shots are easier for some but they will require a copayment to receive, which could be $25-45/month plus the cost of the shot itself at around $10, whereas the sublinguals are $12.00/100 tiny tablets that taste great and dissolve in less than 15 seconds. Personally I prefer the sublinguals and I'm a vegetarian so I'll be taking them the rest of my life.
  8. Acadia

    B12

B12 only comes from animal protein, until you're eating meat again (4-8 oz per day) you'll need B12. You'll also need it for life if you're a vegetarian.

Cheri~ It wasn't drinking any wine or anything like that when the band was too tight, it was after. I know how it feels when it is too tight now and this was definately that "feeling". After I was so sick with my band too tight and having reflux every night for that month, I never want to feel like that again. It caused that partial slip that I had. It's only when I'm too tight that I get reflux. I have never gotten it from food. I don't consider myself semi-vegetarian, I just sometimes don't like the taste of meat. It depends I guess. Usually my salads will have chicken on them. Yesterday it did. But I don't do much dairy. It makes me have gas. TMI. I do love cheese, but I limit it very strictly. The dr just took out a super small amount, he said almost "unmeasurable". I feel like I make better choices when I am able to eat a wider variety of foods. Eva~ Thanks girl. Its tough, but I know I can't beat myself up over it. I have come to the point where I'm ok with the weight loss slowing down. I'm wanting to have it off by my 2 year bandiversary which is June 26th. I feel like that is realistic. Right? Linda~ Once again, thanks to you too! I needed you girls and your positive feedback. I do make much better choices now. Its amazing compared to what I would have eaten before. Good point! I'm going to take a little nap now. Just got back from the shower not long ago. It was very nice. Open house style. CBL~Meredith

    I'm here to help...

Meredith, you have to get the word "failure" out of your head. We all have days when we are unexpectedly faced with the food we love and crave the most. If we completely deny ourselves we end up setting ourselves up for a vicious cycle of guilt and overeating. You need to change your thoughts to how proud you are of limiting your treats. Just a salad? I could never do that. Unless the salad had some meat or cheese, some nuts, some real stick to the ribs food in it. Just eating a salad would set me up for failure also. These are the kinds of situations where you figure you're going to eat some things you normally wouldn't and its OK. Otherwise you walk away feeling deprived and with a raging hunger. Instead choose a few things and eat just a bite of them. Doing so can actually boost your self-esteem and take the fear out of social gatherings. I have to ask you, are you semi-vegetarian? I frequently wonder if you're getting enough Protein, especially whole Proteins found in meat, eggs, or dairy. I would feel too weak to exercise or feel well if I ate what you do. Also, some of your food choices would give me acid reflux. Grapefruit, wine, etc. Maybe after a fill you need to avoid any foods that cause reflux till you lose a few lbs and the band isn't as tight. Look it up on the internet. You would be amazed at the foods and drinks that contribute to reflux. I'm proud of the way you're losing weight. A few tweaks and it'll be more sustainable. Cheri

32 of the Yummiest Grams of Protein in One Sitting!

Thanks for the reply Jane! I have a lot of different Protein sources, just worried about anything that might keep his program from working...you understand. It just nice to know there is someone out there doing 98% vegetarian diet and losing successfully! Thanks again for the suggestions too...

32 of the Yummiest Grams of Protein in One Sitting!

Feedyoureye- My household is 98% vegetarian (me being the 2% holdout on occasion). What types of foods are you eating for Proteins right now? I use the following products which are all fairly low in carb and have a good nutritional count for all the rest. Morningstar farms (the breaded chicken patties are a bit high in carbs due to the breading, but not terrible.) Quorn-love the roasts and pretty much all the rest of their products Field Roast-not to bad, a bit more carby then the other brands Worthington I use any of these for the main "meat" of a meal and then add in lots of fresh and cooked veggies, dreamfields Pasta, brown rice, or taters for the family. I usually only have a tbsp of the pasta, rice or tater. They all work really well in casseroles as well. I can take most recipes and convert them to a vegetarian one with these brands. I have found that while I might be getting a tad more carbs than I would if I was eating real meat, it is not enough to slow my weight loss, unless I start adding in bread or sugar...but that is a different story

Any other gay sleevers out there?

Hi, I'm not gay but I'm a vegetarian!!!
  14. My surgery is outpatient and is on the 14th. I'm to be there at 9 AM and they expect me to be heading home around 2 PM. I've been on a liquid protein diet for the past week (Muscle Milk, Isopure Zero Carb, Broth, Sugar Free Jello, etc.) and it's been fine. I supplemented with one protein bar when I was out, hungry, and had no access to anything else and I didn't want to overeat later. I started the year at 253.4 and am currently at 246.2 and have been monitoring my body fat percentage, skeletal muscle percentage, visceral fat percentage, weight, BMI, and more using a new scale. It's helping me to stay on track and it's neat to see a graph actually go down on a regular basis rather than fluctuating. I ordered 13 cases (156 bottles) of IsoPure Zero Carb (tastes like Crystal Light and is pure protein, no lactose, no carbs - 40 g and 160 calories, 1 a day will help me get 2/3 of the way to my protein goal) from VitaminShoppe online, they have the best deal and free shipping (but be careful ordering as that item causes multiple temporary authorizations on credit cards). I ordered a year worth of multivitamins from Harmon Discount ($102 for a year's worth of appropriate gummi multi vitamins), vitamin D (sublingual) and CoQ10 (sublingual) from AmericanRx, and B12 (sublingual) and mini Calcium with D from VitaminShoppe. I tried the recommended bariatric vitamins but found that they are just normal size vitamins that you have to empty the contents of. Totally pointless to spend more for the same thing. I also signed up for automatic 6 week Sugar Free Jello delivery from Amazon, removed all junk from my house, stocked my freezer with Diet-to-Go vegetarian meals for when I can eat (they are small portions - 1,200 calorie plan), and I imagine I'm missing several things. Either way, I'm very well stocked, prepared, and ready for Friday morning. It's taken me since 2004 to actually get to this point, and six months total from start to finish. At this point I have 121.2 lbs to permanently lose.

32 of the Yummiest Grams of Protein in One Sitting!

I'm a little worried here... I am a vegetarian, and everything I can eat has some carbs. Some Dairy and eggs are not too bad, but I can't live on those. I get surgerized in a week, and keeping my fingers crossed! I did lose some weight on vegetarian South Beach, and the low glycemic index choices did lower my hunger substantially... so I'm hoping that low/medium glycemic index carbs will be ok for losing weight.... Right now at 1600 calories, my carbs are over 170 a day. I'm sure it will be less when I eat much less....
  16. any vegans or vegetarians here??

  17. Something nagging me. I am a vegetarian, I eat eggs and dairy too. There are quite a few Protein sources I use in my diet. Gluten, soy, milk/whey products, nuts, Beans, eggs….I am getting the sleeve in two weeks. My concerns are: -That I may become lactose intolerant….or not be able to eat eggs… and reduce my choices by a bunch. -Many of these choices are high in carbs. I hope I will have success in losing all my over weight, even though my carbs will probably be higher then some of yours. -Its always easier to eat meat when you eat out to get protein. If I can't eat dairy or eggs…..it will be impossible much of the time to find enough protein. I figure I can have a Protein Drink before going out… just fussing here….where there is a will there is a way…I REALLY do not want to go back to eating meat because my sleeve is fussy….
  18. I was banded a year ago, and it seems that my assigned clinic nutritionist changes her story on me. After my first fill in February she told me I had to wait 15 minutes between drinking and eating, then a few months she told I had to wait only five. I was so amazed, I asked her to repeat herself and wrote the five minute figure down in my notebook. A few months after that, she told me I needed to wait 20 minutes. I showed her my notes from the previous session and she backpedaled, saying "Oh, uh, you only have to wait five minutes if you've quickly slammed water." Okay, that sure wasn't what she said before. This isn't the only time I've felt she's changed her story. My trust is a little impaired now. So, with that in mind, I wanted to ask a question about fill amounts and why certain amounts no longer cut it after some time. I've been up and down from 6.0 to 7.6. I had problems with constant vomiting at 7.6 and 7.0. I've been at 6.2 for at least four months. I've had problems getting a fill amount that makes me full quickly, yet also allows me to eat salmon, vegetarian "meats" and other high-protein foods. Often I've had the worst of both worlds: unable to eat those foods, AND still able to eat a large quality of slider foods. This was the case at this level for a few months, but as of recently I'm eating big quantities and I'm also able to eat those high-protein foods, so I am considering moving back up .2 ccs to 6.4. I've lost only ~10 pounds since June, so I'm frustrated. Anyway, my question is, why would a fill amount make me quickly full for a while, and then no longer cut it? My weight has not changed much in the last several months, so that shouldn't be a factor. Does the band lose the fill? More importantly, does this mean that I'm going to have to get this thing filled every few months for the rest of my life? Thanks in advance for any info you have, and thank you to the moderators for having this board for us!
  19. I found some great soup from a Chinese takeout restaurant. I'm a vegetarian so I got the vegetable soup and just ate the broth but if you like any of those like wonton or egg drop that might help with you fluids. The first night I tried the soup I had about 2 1/2-3 cups and it was the most Fluid I had in a while. It was great! Just remember it is packed with sodium so it's probably not a good idea to have that much in one day. When i have some now I limit it to about 2 cups at the most otherwise I just feel even more thirsty. I'm almost 7 weeks out and still struggle EVERY day to get my liquid in, I only get about 20-30oz. I'm thirsty all the time I just can't drink much no matter how much I sip sip sip.

    I'm here to help...

Morning from the frozen southwest. The lowest I saw it last night was 25 degrees. I'm sure some of my plants are going to be mush, but I did set up lights and covers for a lot of them. I have quite a few plants....not as many as I used to but still I have indoor plants and outdoor plants in pots. A lot of them are frost sensitive....not sure how well they will survive a hard freeze even with protection. Brrrr. It's still only 31 degrees out. Yes, I am a wimp. Went shopping yesterday and bought a new MP3 player...it's so tiny and all it does is music, no video or anything else. It can do radio but you have to add a radio card. My old MP3 isn't recognized by the computer anymore and I really like to take my stories with me while I work. I also bought some outdoor fabric to redo my cushions on the front porch chairs. Every one of them is ripped and I don't like what is commercially available as replacement cushions. They won't be fancy, but they should work. Then I went to the sushi bar for lunch. That is always nice and relaxing. So yesterday I didn't get much done but shopping. Of course I'd be up for a trip to Chicago. Right now I have nothing on my schedule except a trip to NC or OH at the end of September. Cheri...you are too funny. It's almost nice to see someone post stuff that is "taboo". I have to monitor myself so I don't blurt out inappropriate things. My DH has no problems in "that category". He will take me any way he can get me as long as he can. It keeps him happy. I'm almost at the point I don't care either way, but I do like the intimacy. My arthritis is acting up. My fingers and hands are sore, my back and hips are sore, and my right hand keeps going numb. I started with the ibuprofen yesterday and think I may have to stay on it for a bit to stay moving. It's still low dose so I'm hoping I won't have to go on the high dose stuff again. I'm also very stuffy today. Hope it's just allergies because I don't want to be sick. We are going to a pajama party tonight at my friends house. She lives half a mile away so no problem with driving. I made posole for it both vegetarian and regular so people have something to absorb the alcohol. She is also providing many beds for people to sleep over. Happy New Year's Eve. I'll try and check in later as I don't have much planned for today either. Wow. Eva

    SOMETHING WRONG???

Shrimp is NOT liquid. Your doc said liquids this week. Purée is NOT liquid. I am vegetarian too. I got mushroom stock and low sodium vegetable stock. sugar free Popsicles were good but only two per day. I was only interested in my soy Protein shakes, Water and reduced sugar apple juice the first week.

    SOMETHING WRONG???

Swanson makes an all natural vegetarian vegetable broth. Also Knorr has cubes of vegetable broth that tastes really good--but loaded with MSG Never in my life did I anticipate there'd be a day when I knew the brands and flavors of broth, and their ingredients. LMBO

    SOMETHING WRONG???

You don''t sound mean at all, just honest and I appreciate that! I am having a really hard tome becuase I am a vegetarian and I can't eat the broths and stocks, but I guess I'll have to figure something else out.

    What can I do?

Im always shocked when post-ops are eating fast food chili...I think "Are you guys nuts?? Recommending anything from a fast food restaurant!?!". Until I looked up the nutritional info online just now. A small chili has 220 calories, 7g fat, 22g carbs and 18g of protein. It could be way worse and I was surprised that those numbers weren't much higher! It's not an option for me because I'm vegetarian but.. I get why it's an option for some!

    I'm here to help...

Tina, although this is a scary time for you...it's also a time of great excitement. You will be starting a journey to a new you and you can do this. Being self reliant is a freeing thing and you will slowly build strength and self-confidence. Do what you have to do for you.... Julie, glad to see you posting again. Having a play area for the girls sounds like a good idea. Have fun with the birthday party. Cheri, I rarely get bored anymore. I have enough projects and other things to work on that keep me occupied. It's one of the things I have found amazing as I have gotten older. When I was much younger, I would get bored and didn't know what to do with myself but now, I don't have enough time in the day to do what I want. Janet, I agree with you....it's cold. It's not even 50 here yet and the high is supposed to be in the low 60's. We are wimps compared to the rest of the country aren't we. I'm doing laundry today...caught up on three days worth of email, will start cutting down oleanders because the bulky trash pickup starts next week, and need to put away Christmas stuff and organize a closet. Oh, and I'm freezing and putting away leftovers. This is my plan for the week. I guess I'll have to do the yard work over the next two days because it looks like it might rain here....might rain. Spent yesterday cleaning up after the party and we had company for a lot of the day. After everyone left, I was tired and didn't do anything. We had a great Christmas and I'm grateful for my friends and family...including all of you. I'm back on the choo choo too. Proteins and veggies and fruit is my plan for the next three days. No more white flour and sugar until New Year's Eve. My friend is having a party and I know I won't be totally carb free, but I'm going to behave myself until then and be modest with any carbs I eat then. I'm making posole (pork and hominy soup) for New Years and a vegetarian version. Besides the hominy, it is fairly carb friendly. Okay, I'm off to do something. My before NY's resolution is to check in daily, if not more often. We'll see where that goes. Be good....later, Eva
