  1. I am getting sleeved on Jan 17. I started this whole process back in August and I have probably gained 10 pounds since then. My eating has been out of control. I know this may sound strange but I think I am going through some kind of grieving process for the food that I won't be able to have after the surgery. Has this happened to anyone else? Well, now that I have gotten all the hoops out of the way I hope that I can buckle down and at least lose that extra 10.

    Weight Gain

Your body is probably in shock mode at the starvation it thinks it is in. It will hang on to fluids and such, so keep the fluids moving through you, this helps the body release fluid! It is not surprising what you are going through, we all do, and this weight "gain" WILL change, just keep following your program. Read other's posts on this site, you'll see that most, if not all, of us go through this. And look FORWARD to your success, you WILL find it!
  3. I have gone through a 10lb weight gain in the hospital, nasty breath, crazy digestion, dizziness, exhaustion to feeling like I am now on the other side of this! I was getting really annoyed that I was not losing any weight beyond re-losing the 10lb hospital gain but finally I dropped an additional 5lbs. Yesterday, I tried on a pair of capris that "shrunk" last summer and they buttoned, zipped and were more comfortable than when I bought them. As an added bonus I found $13 in the pocket, so I splurged on a manicure! I am having an easy time getting my fluid and protein in, walking more, digestion is much better, much less soreness and no more dizziness on days 9 and 10! Thank you for letting me share my small acomplishment

    NuvaRing?

Glad u posted this...I wonder if my tax has contributed to weight gain???

    NuvaRing?

Nuvaring is my choice of BC. I have had no issues before or after my sleeve surg with weight gain... I do have an issue with a decrease in my sexual drive.. So that SUCKS. But, I can't have babies right now, so we have to work thru that issue.

    Weigh In

Getting obsessed with one's scale does contribute to unnecessary negative feelings imposed on oneself...depending on what the almighty scale says. Trying not to weigh yourself everyday is healthier...and your mood doesn't need to reflect any negative thoughts of no progress or even a small weight gain. Small fluctuations in weight are normal, and if you can accept them for what they are that's great. I've read too many posts from individuals lamenting about their lack of progress or weight gain when it was only a small fluctuation and not indicative of a trend. Other's mileage may vary...I just feel it's important for one'e emotional health and well being to stay on the positive side of thinking.
  7. Yeah, I thought about that too but I went ahead and had the revision done. I was very attached to my band. I thought exactly what you posted when I thought of a revision surgery. I know someone who had the bypass around the same time as my band, and now they are twice as heavy. I initially went in for a fill since I've been traveling, working and moving, I hadn't seen a fill doctor for a couple of years since I was still doing well and losing with the level of Fluid I had. So when I finally made an appointment with my current bariatric center, just to check my fluid level, and maybe get more added, they suggested the revision, and an unfill right then due to an enlarged esophagus (Too tight again, 2nd time for me). Gasp! I wasn't a happy camper because I knew I was going to gain some weight back once they unfill me. No way, I just want a fill please. Um, no can do... Either rest my band for months again and get refilled & struggle to find that sweet spot again or rest my band and get a revision. That's why I opted for the revision so I wouldn't go through the weight gain-weight loss cycle again since I had a habit of being too tight. I was still working to get to goal again after my first enlarged esophagus episode. I almost didn't go through with it. I'm happy with the results, the physical sensation that I get from the sleeve vs the band when I eat, as well as the weight loss results so far. I'm 24 days post-op and I'm down 22 lbs, and it's been relatively easy staying on program. Haven't thrown up or slimed yet. I guess from the band all these years, I know when to stop. That familiar pressure in the back of our throat... Stop or else. ^^ But, having said that, It is all very new to me though so check back in a few months lol. Since you're at goal, does your doctor still want you to have a revision, do you have issues with your band? Either way, hope it works out for you.

    post op weight gain

Help!!!! i had my band fitted July 09 and managed to lose 3st (42lbs) I have had 2 fills (5mls) and the last one of those was back in Oct 09, unfortunately I have regained 1st and am feeling really depressed about. I know what i need to do as far as the eating is concerned but struggle to find foods and the time to consider my menu. I have an office job which obviously means i am sat all day which doesnt help with the exercise side of things. I invested in a cross trainer recently and am trying to increase my exercise although the going is slow. I am getting another fill done on Mar 8th and am hoping this will quick start my weight lose again. basically what i want to know is has any one else experianced this problem and found that having another fill helped. I am so worried that it wont and just need a bit of encouragement....:rolleyes2:

    So I've Joined Finally

I finally decided to actually join VST. I've lurked on the forums for about nine months as part of my decision-making process. Unexpected things happened when I finally talked with my doctor here, and I ended up being added to a study in progress here in the Middle East. So instead of having to pay the whole shebang myself, I only had to pay the hospital part. That definitely swayed my choice toward surgery. So here I am. April 4 was sleeve day, and other than some pretty incredible nausea afterward for about three days, everything went really well. I had no pain medication at all, much to the surprise of the nursing staff here who are accustomed to giving morphine every four hours on the dot. No thanks. No drains, and no other complications either. Whoo hoo. I guess the biggest surprise is how quickly my attitude toward food changed. I thought a lot about what being sleeved would mean before the surgery, and actually had a grief response at the idea of not being able to eat as before. I didn't really think of specific things I would miss, but rather that I would miss eating itself. My husband (HWHN) and I are Culture Vultures and Foodies... for about the past 30 years. I couldn't imagine how that would work for us if I couldn't eat. So I imagined how I would feel and got all emotional. Reality is that I'm now completely turned off by foods I used to love. I have been reflecting on the change - I HAVE to eat rather than I WANT to eat. It's so different. Sometimes I get "mental hunger" but thanks to reading the forums I expected that, and given what I do, took a little mini self-quiz and recognized that the mental hunger comes when I'm Bored, Angry, Lonely, or Tired (the bane of addiction). That was a bit of a shock, since I would never have said I was addicted to food. Other than the initial weight gain during/after diagnosis, I've remained at a stable weight... too much, but stable. ;P Never would have said I'm addicted to food, but the mental/psychological struggle tells a tale. So I'm getting back to doing some things I loved and let go. Swimming, photography, writing, and reading what my mother always used to call, "Penny Horribles." (Novels with no redeeming value except to pass time pleasurably) And... HWHN and I had our first official date post op this week, and it was great. He orders what he wants, and I nibble off his plate. Beautifully done cube of rare roast beef and a sliver of Manchego cheese. Heaven. Tonight is my regular doctor visit, and I know I've lost weight because of my clothes, but I don't know how much. I don't keep a scale at home. I want the amount to be a surprise, and I want to gauge where I am in the process by how I'm feeling about myself, not by the numbers on some stupid torture instrument. Had enough of that. After 96 days, I'm down 6 sizes and coveting those pink skinny jeans. CE
  10. You know I never really thought about it. But I am on ALOT of meds that can cause weight gain. Prozac Depo shot Steroids and steroid shots Tizanidine An OAB medication that causes Fluid retention sometimes. And I'm sure there's more. I take 15 prescriptions all together. What happens after my surgery? Should I switch medications? I definitely want to switch out Depo I started the shot in March and have gained 40lbs on top of my steroids. Thoughts? It's not about the food

Posted by Lindata "I never ever thought I would one day be technically 100 pounds overweight. Looking at myself, I would think where would 100 pounds come off of me? Now that I've lost some of that weight it's like blinders have been taken off - I can't believe I COULDN'T see the weight. I really believed I looked way thinner than I did. How is it that we can lie to ourselves and believe what we say?" I do the same thing, Linda. I'll look in the mirror and try to figure out where the rest of the weight will come off of. Even before I lost any weight, I couldn't imagine myself so big unless I looked in the mirror. Whenever I had to write my weight down for anything, I would mistakenly put a "1" where the "2" had to be. At least I'm back into the 100's but I still have so much to go. You're very fortunate to have married a man who loves you no matter what. I wasn't so lucky. I have seen a big change in my husband's attitude with me according to my weight. He married a slim young woman who allowed the stresses of life to affect her eating habits. I can't even blame my weight gain on having children. I only gained 28 pounds with each child which came right off. A rocky marriage, a partial hysterectomy, a car accident, and the loss of my parents are to blame for my lack of control. food became my drug of choice. Like Judy, I think it is the most difficult addiction to overcome. We need to eat so keeping the "drug" out of the house is impossible. The demons are always there tempting me. At least the band helps keep them at bay.

    Cream for scars?

Ugh. Stretch marks, wrinkles, saggy skin.... All part and parcel of the weight gain and surgery. Mederma, bio corneum, melaquin, hydroquinone, ammonium lactate.... There are a zillion out there. Stretch marks fade... As do the angry scars from the surgery. But we feel like we need to DO something, so let us do just that. And? As women, so much of this world is tied up in our appearance---think of the sheer volume of makeup products and anti wrinkle creams out there--- and you'll get it. Not saying it is right, but there it is. For me? I'll fight aging tooth and nail, and what ever little benefit I see in 30 years, well, I'll take it. For the saggy tummy skin and boobs---that's what plastics are for. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. welcome, first off your are not alone and your experiences are very similar keep your head up and stay on track, if you get off track get back on track. Most of my weight gains have take place when I stay away from this board.
  14. I was banded in December 2005. My highest weight was 327 I got down to 200 (never made it to onederland but was very comfortable where I was). I moved to another state in 2007 found a great Dr to do my fills. I really stopped loosing weight when I moved here and only stayed at 200 for a short time but settled at about 210 for most of the time. I broke my ankle in November 2008 and put on a few pounds like 7 and then started infertility treatments. I gained weight from the drugs and went up to about 225-230. I got pregnant and was gaining slowly then was put on bed rest and the weight packed on , I ended up at 290 at last weigh in and then lost the fastest 20 pounds when she was born. I have a beautiful 11 month old to show for all my weight gain LOL and would not trade a "goal" weight for my little one. However I need to get back on the "band" wagon and loose this weight again and more if possible because of my health and wanting to be active with my little one. I have a bad knee that really hurts even with little exercise, I have been doing Water areobics to get some exercise in but even that hurts my knee. I feel like I am in a catch 22.....my knee hurts because of all this extra weight but I cant exercise too hard because it hurts... gggggrrrrr. I want to hear from others who maybe gained back due to pregnancy, injury, or whatever....the cause is not as important as the journey. Also has anyone been able to re-lose weight by using this wonderful tool? Any problems that you had, tips, any info or support is always welcome. I need to get my head back into loosing mode it has just been so long. I know I can do it because I did it before. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you guys!

    7 Months Post Op

From someone who hasn't had surgery yet, please don't be a statistic! We all have spent the better part of our lives being statistics. Weight gain after diet statistics. % of fat American statistics. Do NOT be a gain after WLS statistic. Get your head back in the game, ladies! I'll be there with you one day and you might need to remind me, too!

    7 Months Post Op

I haven't even had my first apt yet, but, focus on what you have lost........65 lbs good for you! Maybe this is just one of those periods where you have tapered off, but if you stick with it, you will start losing again. The alternative is just weight gain and complications, so hang in there. I would give anything to lose 65 lbs, think of how good you look and the health benefits you've gained so far. Keep reading other posts, maybe there will be something suggested that will work for you.

Constant Vomiting. No Weight Loss :-(

Vomiting will lead to slips and eating junk will lead to weight gain. If your doctor removing fluid isn't helping, then you need to have a barium swallow done to check for a slip or other complication.
  18. I always thought it was a complete farce- the idea that a person could gain weight exercising simply by putting on muscle mass. I was wrong! One day about a month ago, I suddenly started craving Protein again- something I haven’t really craved in 6 months or so. Of course, at this point, I know when my body is trying to tell me something, so I went back to the old (and very useful) rules for the band and began eating protein before anything else. Within a few days, two things started to happen. 1) I started gaining weight. 2) I could quite suddenly began noticing increased strength at the gym. For a few days, I was a little worried about the weight gain, but a trip to Old Navy, Macy’s, and Express put my fears to rest- I’d dropped a clothing size. I am now a size 4 rather than a size 6. So I’m ok like this! I’ve started losing the weight again but chances are I will fluctuate like this forever; drifting between 125 and 135 lbs. I figure as long as I maintain a good cardio and weight training routine and listen to my body, I’ll be just fine!
  19. I've gained about 5 pounds since my 1st Nut visit. I had my 2nd visit yesterday and I was so afraid they would be talking about how I gained, and If I really want this I need to stick to the plan etc...But it was totally different actually. They didn't even mention the weight gain and concentrated more on new behaviors I should start. I have my 3rd visit in 3 weeks and I plan to lose those 7 pounds not for them but because I really need to stick to the plan. However until I get my approval Im making sure I stay at a BMI of at least 40. I don't want to take any chances with the insurance.

    Going Out To Eat

dorrie - my husband is the same. His metabolism is still doing him a few favors, but he'll turn 40 next year and his luck can only last so long. He has recently crossed into thye "obese" threshold - he's between 6'4 and 6'5 and about 270, all if it is carried in his middle torso (stomach, "love handles", etc.) He is a horrible volume eater. We went to a bakery Saturday and I picked up 10 stuffed rolls - about 6 of which I planned to bring to people at work today. These things are about 5" across, so we aren't talking about small dinner rolls. Sunday when I went to pack them up they were all gone. He'd eated all 10 in less than 1 day, in addition to whatever regular meals we'd had. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to make something for dinner, but can't find it and when I ask him if he knows where the this or that is, he's like, "Oh I ate that..." There goes dinner! Now - I make him a week's worth of breakfasts every Sunday. So he has a nice, balanced breakfast. He takes leftovers for lunch most days, or eats out. And if I don't make dinner (which I do 95% of the time) then I make sure he has something. I also make sure he has Snacks at work (he has had bouts of hypoglycemia since he was about 8, controlled through diet). He still eats - usually another full meal - as soon as he gets home from work, and then I generally start dinner about 2 or 3 hours later. He thinks he eats healthy because his favorite snack is lowfat yogurt with granola, but he doesn't the quart-sized yogurt tubs should last longer than 3 servings! He truly doesn't care. He will refuse to eat lowfat products (other than the yogurt) - sour cream, milk, butter, etc. He has no idea how many calories he eats. If he's hungry, he eats what he wants, and as much of it as he wants, period. I worry about his health - but like you said, I can't make him care. I can just try and figure out ways to plant the seeds. (I can't really say much about his weight gain considering I used to make fun of how "tent-like" his pants were... you know... the 36x36 pants he wore that I used to be able to swim in... I may be a hypocrite but I have my limits...!) I guess the related point of all that is - splitting a meal isn't really an option. He doesn't do well with less than his entire meal, and then some. Plus we like completely different foods (he's a big red meat/steak eater, I'm not at all). Luckily I can split with DH, who eats whatever mommy or princesses eat.

    Carbonation?

Before surgery I was told that I would have to get off carbonated beverages and caffeine prior to the operation. I was on a 6 diet coke a day habit. So I went cold turkey. I suffered through withdrawal for about a week. But because of that change alone I lost 20 pounds before the operation. It is my belief that the carbonation produce miniature explosions in the stomach that slowly over time cause the stomach to expand. As the stomach expands it allows one to eat more and thus results in weight gain.
  23. Hi, 6 days post-op'er. Trying to get those 3 meals a day in. But, barely hitting 100 calories a day, and up to about 32 oz of water daily. Still bloated and achy from surgery. How many calories are too little? Adding protein powder where I can, but ingesting so little can't imagine I'm getting all I need. Scale barely moving. Only 5 pounds down from surgery - 9 lbs if I include the water weight gained from IV.

Girls: Depo Provera and the Lapband

I know I packed on a lot after being on Depo, but was off it for 2 years and did not lose much. I am back on it and BOTH the surgeon and Gyno said it has very little to do with weight gain/retention. My loss has been good with band, but I wonder if it would be better without it. I want to switch BC methods, but neither doc wants me on the pill because I am 42. The Gyno and I have discussed some permanent things, but I don't know about going that route either. I have no kids, and probably won't have any, but am just unsure about taking a permanent step. Good job to stop the Depo now and let it cycle out. It takes a long time to regulate after wards. Best of luck,
