April 7th Sleevers?
Tammylb replied to Pretty_In_Purple's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nut had me on a new directions protein shake plain . I get to eat a small lunch and yogurt . We are not put on a liquid diet . The evening before I do a colon clean, was with a antibacterial soap and use a antibacterial mouthwash . We stay 2-3 nights . I'm surprised by the different ways to prepare for this. I'm so dearly gonna miss my buttered biscuits and po boy bread ... But I will be skinny when I'm crying about it! Lol -
Life Changes...here I come!
pnw218 replied to Cricket's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Native Texan : ) There seems to be a few post-op choices. I agree, trying to figure out how much Protein I am getting each day makes my head hurt. lol I opted for the Cornell diet. You can find it at http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf I think the main thing is to take it slow and see what works for you. I have had a bump today but think it was meds I took and not my choice of food - which had been fine the previous day or two. I hear people talking about eating chili and loving it - and I couldn't eat much chili before my surgery, so it doesn't sound good to me at all! : ) -
I just received my sample packets of flavored Nectar protein and mixed the first one (apple) with 8 oz. Cold water in my little blender ball bottle and it comes up half froth and then liquid on bottom. Is this right? How are you all mixing these drinks? Lol

? for those who dine as part of business in the post op stage
wildrose1966 replied to dolphintattoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Continental sometimes includes yoguart.......or just bring your own. Or make a protein shake and bring it to the breakfast.........if anyone asks, it is a protein shake, 'nuff said. Steakhouse. I traveled about 2.5 wks post surgery. Soup should be on the appy menu, alot of places have a pasta option. I remember ordering pumpkin ravioli, I then cut out all the 4 edges of the ravioli and put it to the side, and ate the inside........purees pumpkin with a little of the pasta on the top and bottom. There was more pasta on the side of my plate than what I ate. Personally, I would eat before dinner and order soup as your main............if these people do not know of the surgery, I would just say you aren't feeling great soup is what you prefer. -
Has anyone been dealing with a stricture just diagnosed 5 days post dilation and can barely drink a liter of Water no food maybe 20 grams Protein daily. Spent weeks in hospital before just recently finding a midline stricture! Can barely do cream Soups and water gurgles. Have to choose water or food. Just wondering if anybody has had similar problems and how many dilations till they could eat something without being in agony, any causes grief except water. Lost 70# since 9-14-16. How do you get signatures and pics to stick?
Fanny Adams replied to jacole1820's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I thought you had solved it when I saw your ticker in the other post, but I think I see your problem now. You have pasted the ticker into your message as you are replying. You need to paste it into your Signature area. To do this, you have to click on the UserCP option near the top of this page, then on the Edit Signature option, on the left hand side. After you have pasted, don't forget to click the Save Signature button at the bottom of the Edit Signature page. Hope this helps. -
Trying to figure out pre-op diet
ShoppGirl replied to hauntedhideaway's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did anyone tell you not to stick up on too much for after surgery. Some of our tastes change and a common thing for protein shakes is to taste too sweet. -
At Four Weeks Post Op?
Joiebean replied to PreciousCargo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I may be the exception here. I can't eat meat yet, at all. I can eat fish and shrimp. Shrimp actually go down really well. My typical day is: Morning: Decaf coffee with 1 cup low fat soy milk, and either yogurt or egg beaters with goat cheese Mid Morning snack: Babybel light cheese Lunch: Greek Yogurt (mix regular and fat free) Afternoon snack: Small Protein drink Dinner: Shrimp and avacado I met with my nutrionist last week and she told me to cut out the applesauce and juice I was eating/drinking because it had to many carbs and that can cause a stall (which I am in..I think I may be starting to come out of it.) But she told me otherwise, to just keep what I was doing. Also that she didn't anticipate that I would be able to eat meat this early anyway. I have to say I was looking at my husbands steak last night, longing for a bite, but still had no interest in actually taking a bite because I knew it would just get stuck and hurt. Oh and ice cream...yeah that's awful. I almost threw up when I had some last week. It was one indulgence that I gave myself in the 4 weeks post op. I won't do that again. I felt the worst I have since surgery because of it. -
So, there's no getting away from the IV, that's a given. Be sure to let them know how you feel, and ask for what you need (someone to hold your hand, cover the site with gauze, etc.) Yes, they do hurt initially, then you don't feel them anymore, and remember it is not a metal needle in your vein but a pliable tube. As for the pain med, mine was IV Dilaudid, and not just at night. You should not have to receive IM (intramuscular) injections for pain if you have an IV in place and you are needle phobic. Pain Management is a specialty and there are options. You or your family may need to negotiate this. Believe me, I am a nurse, and you are not the only person afraid of needles! How much a shot hurts depends on a lot of things, and the shoulder is not the only place where it can be given. Good luck, and think beyond the needles to the future that is in store for you!

I'm rarely hungry. I eat or drink protein a few times a day. Solids are still difficult for me over 7 weeks post op. I'll see my dietitian tomorrow and will ask her about my challenges. By the way, check out my Facebook blog at "200lb March". I'm documenting my journey there.

What actually makes the liver shrink?
over65 replied to Eurocrat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Intermittent fasting not very good for preop. I don't know any surgeon who would recommend it. There are some very good tasting protein shakes. Have you tried Fairlife Nutrition Chocolate. Tastes just like chocolate milk. I really hated Premiere Protein shakes and most powder-based shakes. You will need lots of protein (60-80g per day) after surgery so best you find one you like and start using now. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I felt the same that first and second week out. I read that a lot of people said it was mind hunger, but it sure felt real. My suggestion is to drink water or protein when you feel the hunger pains. By the time you get to puréed foods you will feel better. I'm there now and am struggling to eat enough. I'm full all the time.

Trouble Drinking After Eating?
Maddie replied to Fleur de lis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same here. Dense Protein fills me for hours. I don't eat Breakfast. My tummy doesn't like it. I drink a prot shake in the mornings. After about an hour I start pumping in my Water for the day. I can usually get about 2/3 of it in before lunch. Cuz after I start eating for the day, it gets harder to drink. Hope this helps. -
PRE-OP AND MORE SCARED THAN EVER!
Dawnislas replied to Debbie9966's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would think they would have you lose more weight to improve your sleep apnea in order to make you a safe candidate for the surgery. I don't think they would cancel at first just delay until you get the issue better controlled. I remember when I had to lose weight pre- op I put myself in a "zone" of controlled thinking about no carbs, protein & protein drinks. I was able to lose the needed weight to be approved. Good luck to you. -
Hi all - I had surgery June 13 and the weight flew off. It came off so fast I felt like a rockstar! However, at four weeks my stall began and I haven't lost much of anything since then. I'm back on regular foods and not doing a good job on my Protein drinks (loved them before and holy cow they taste awful now...including the kind that allegedly have no taste). What kinds of foods were you all eating to get you past this terrible hurdle? It's so depressing - I am so hoping for 100 pounds by 4 or 5 months, but at this rate, I definitely won't hit it. Help...

Day 4 Of Liquids.....
4ALongerLife replied to danibecca's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love cream of chicken and mushroom Soup. IDK why but it's the bomb. Mix it with 4 oz of ff milk and 2 oz of water... makes 2 servings at 1 c each. And you might say yuck at this, but blended ff cottage cheese with SF torani syrup (I love it with caramel). It's got a lot of Protein (12 g) with low calories (80 total) in a 1/2 c. It's hard for liquids with your tummy, but once you are sleeved, it's much easier. Hang in there, you are doing wonderfully! Best of luck! xx -
Ok I am scheduled for surgery June 20 and I am so excited! I have to start 2 protein shakes per day this saturday! I have never been a big shake fan so I am looking for some input on good ones!! Please and thank you!

Visalus...it Has Been A Big Help For Me
iamchrisstone replied to Milbedil's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
that's incorrect. Visalus is a tri-blend of protein. So 3 different types or protein - yes one of those is soy. However, it's specially processed to remove isoflavones that can impact estrogen - so it's not a problem for those who worry about figroids, etc. You can research more of this to find out the exact process. The shakes seem to be a little lower in protein grams than other shakes, but it's a much better blend. plus, look at the sugar. less than 1 gram of sugar. i was looking at some of the shakes that many people post about drinking and they are drinking 20 grams - 200 grams of sugar! WHAT!?!?!!? plus low fat, low sodium, gluten free and lactose free. i dont know if these shakes are good for bariatric patients. i hope so because i have my surgery on the 21st and love these over about anything else. either way, the comment of them being only soy protein is incorrect, and the little soy that IS used isnt your typical soy. -

Found new protein.....
ppressey24 replied to ppressey24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ordered the pure. It has no taste so i basically wanted it to add in other things to get the extra Protein. Now i was doing infusions for my chronic fatigue syndrome, ms, and my arthritis. But it didnt help but for a couple of days. I read where tumeric in the natural root or the Vitamin helps so i started with the vitamin, and thats all ive had now in 6 months. Im only 1 week post op and i no longer need that total replacement that i was looking at in april. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App -
What is a typical day of eating for you?
Essence46 replied to unsupersizeme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved in June. Today I have had a banana, a cup of coffee, a protein bar, a cheese stick, half a grill cheese sandwich and some mini-pretzels with peanut butter. Also, about 32 oz of water. For dinner, I will have a small chicken tigh and some cabbage. I eat everything on a small saucer. Not sure of the size though. I realize when I work out, I have to eat more. It varies a little every day but not much. I eat a lot of boiled eggs, peanut butter and drink a lot of shakes too. -
I'm sure this has been asked before, but for some reason I'm having a hard time finding it in the forums... I know for the first bit of time after the surgery, you're not supposed to drink liquid with meals, but, is this a FOREVER issue? Or, can you eventually have a glass of water/wine/etc with a meal? Some things are too dry or too spicy for me, and I totally depend on that sip of liquid to get me through a meal. Is this something I will have to give up forever? Also, is the "not drinking with meals" a medical issue, or is it just so that the liquid doesn't take up space in the sleeve where you want your Protein, etc to go? Thanks for your insight =)

I am new to the site and decided I need to research both options for weight loss surgery. I have battled my weight all my life and now it is catching up with me big time (excuse the pun). I have had trouble controlling by blood pressure, (3 medications) I am pre diabetic, and my feet and knees are always sore. It is time for me to take control of my life and I hope that weight loss surgery will help me to get there. I have recently joined the gym and am really enjoying it. It is hard work but it feels good. I have 150 pounds to lose and feel at 45 now is the time! I have met with Dr. Amson once and am waiting for appointments with all the specialists. I am excited to join the site and learn more about everyone's experiences. Thanks...chat with you soon. Barb :cat:

Hi all, I had my sleeve surgery on 4/13/16. So I'm almost 2 mo. out. Glad to finally make it to eating almost all foods. Here are some things that have caused slight problems. anyone else experience this. Hard to get these to move through stomach: --swallowing pills (even after cutting in half) --Fiber foods like cereals (raisin bran, Kashi) --whole grain oatmeal --crackers Any suggestions? Are there some foods that no matter how far out from surgery you decide just to avoid?? Also my weight loss has slowed. What helps most: exercise drinking lots of Water eating less, and only eating Protein and frozen veg eating NO sweets or Desserts I try to eat yogurt with fruit when i want something sweet. Also I have resumed drinking coffee in a.m. but not sure how to do it since you can't eat and drink at same time. So is it best to have a cup of coffee and wait 1 hr before Breakfast. Or to eat something first thing like an egg cooked, then wait an hr before having coffee? thanks in advance,
