  1. I gotta say, I feel much better hearing everyone else's comments. I'm in "hell" myself at the moment, lol. I was banded on the 6th of August, had my first post opp visit and I'm due for my first fill on Sept 8th. I'm trying so hard to continue the weight loss but right now, it doesn't wanna come off. I know I'm being a bit anxious here and I need to be patient but I don't want a gain before my first fill either. I'm just trying to figure out how my first fill is gonna help the weight come off when I'm not really eating all that much right now as it is.

    Just a few words

No words could have said it so eloquently Cindy. Prayers for your emotional healing in this time of loss.
  3. I had my sleeve done two weeks ago and lost 13 pounds in the first week. I weight myself today and I have put on 2 pounds, so it's an 11 pound loss in two weeks. I'm sure it's either water weight or a stall but I'm just wondering if that's something fairly typical this early on?
  4. CONGRATS!!!!! AMAZING job! what did you do to help the weight loss? over 100lbs in 9 months is OUTRAGEOUS! way to go! what are your eating habits and excercise routine like?

    Bones

I'm starting to feel and see bones. Like, collar bones, and I can feel my spine in the neck area (I seem to be losing from the top down and from extremeties - fingers toes lower legs and arms). My wedding rings no longer stay on my fingers. And my calves, which were already pretty muscular and not fat, have gotten an inch smaller - from 16 inches to 15 inches. It is such a weird sensation, feeling bones and seeing results. I guess the swimming is really working my shoulders/upper body and legs. Don't get me wrong, there is still a lot of flesh around my bones, but the weight loss is getting noticeable. People who don't know I had surgery are asking what I am doing. I tell them I log everything I eat and go to the gym 5x a week for anywhere from an hour to two hours depending on what I am doing that day (this is all true - they do not need to know I had a surgical assist!). I'm creeping up on my lowest adult weight - 239. I was 244 this morning. The smaller clothes I bought are getting too loose. I have a couple of work out tops I got from Old Navy that used to cling to my tummy which now drape gracefully - it won't be long before I need to get an XL instead of an XXL.. Hell, the concept of clothes draping gracefully on me is whole new sensation. When I was 312 or 320 or 335, there was never graceful drape. There was tugging and layering. Looking in the mirror and feeling like crap. Now, there is possibility. I know I've got a long way to go, but I feel like I've come so far already. Tomorrow is my 3 month follow up with my surgeon. I am interested in seeing how is going to assess my progress. I think he will be pleased. I've lost right around 70 lbs from my program start weight. He thinks I can lose 100 due to the surgery. I have every intention of surpassing that number.
  6. Me too! I'm noticing some of my shirts that were snug or even tight are fitting much more loose now! I don't have a scale either. I figured in these first months I will only weigh when I see my dr. I am 2 weeks post op today and while getting ready to go to the store I took my time doing my hair and make up and was noticing my face looks thinner. I love the way I feel! I don't want a scale to depress me with stalls, etc. I'm just enjoying the ride right now and looking forward to when I actually do weigh again!
  7. I've suspected that my metabolic rate was lower than normal even preop from years of yo-yo dieting. Now that I'm fully recovered postop and cleared for all foods, I wanted to see what my RMR (resting metabolic rate) really is. UC Davis Sports Medicine Clinic is a little more than an hour from me. For $125 they tested my RMR and gave me a functional mobility assessment. The RMR test took about 25 minutes. I learned that my RMR is lower than normal. The exercise physiologist who did that test looked over my preop and postop intake (a period of about three months) and thinks that I've lowered it with too few calories over that period. That said, if I laid in bed all day and didn't even get up to go to the bathroom, I would still need 1290 calories a day. She suggested I not go below that figure, even though she knows I've been sleeved. If I want to get my RMR back to a more normal level, I need to increase both my calories and my activity together. This woman is a PhD in exercise physiology and works with world-class athletes as well as mere mortals like myself. I trust her advice. I say this because I got slammed a while back for following my surgeon's advice to get my intake up to 900-1200 calories each day for my "main" weight loss phase. Then I had a functional movement assessment by an MS in biomechanical engineering. It was fascinating. He had me perform seven compound movements, e.g., I was using both my upper and lower body in each of them. He measured my degree of movement, stability, and strength for each movement, and used computer software based on my results to generate an exercise prescription for a set of exercises I can to at home 4-5 times a week to improve each. I'm as out of shape as I've ever been, and have a nasty habit of doing too much, too soon, and setting myself back doing that. I now have an individualized prescription for my body and the way it works today, not anyone's guess at what will work. I plan to go back in six months or so and be tested again and see if I've raised my RMR. A super well-spent $125, as far as I'm concerned.

    Cat spay in UK question?

I am in the UK and have had cats that have had the op from the side AND from underneath. The only difference has been the type of cat. The Pedigree cats tend to have the operation from underneath as the hair needs to be shaved before the operation and regrowth can be un-naturally patterned and can basically grow back a bit oddly! Hence, if the cat is of 'Show' quality then this is a major flaw. The common 'moggies' as we call them here in the UK (basic mis-match of many different breeds all rolled into one perfect jumble) don't need to perfect after the operation so the side entry operation can be performed. The side entry is the easiest option! Hope this helps. Gill :-)
  13. I opened this post and went..... Oh I feel you! First off.... take a breath! I promise, you aren't going to forget! Do you have a patient navigator to work with? My patient navigator has been a God send and has kept me on track. If not it is OK! You know what you have to do, so first things first.... Make a list... a spread sheet.... a chalk board.... whatever you need to do to keep things contained. I had the full six months to get stuff done, so the first month I got 85% of the stuff done, and this past month (my last month) I hurried and got everything else done. You might want to at least call and make as many appointments as possible, I have heard of people being held up by one appointment that took 4 weeks or so to get into, I have never had that issue, however I had to do a sleep study, it took a couple weeks to get into and I had to do a follow up sleep study and both times they had to be read and that took a good 6 weeks start to finish. Everything else has been very quick. I have struggled with the weight loss, I had a 5lb loss requirement and a no gain (per my surgeon) I did gain a tiny amount (2#) which they weren't concerned with, they were watching for a big gain. So as I was coming up to my last appt (which was yesterday) I kind of freaked, I had 7 days to get down 5lbs and I was so worried I wouldn't do it, and then I would have to wait longer. I sucked it up, I knew I had to do it, I went low carb (cut all carbs but fruits and veggies) and lost 7.9# in one week. I am not stopping though, I had one cheat meal last night and started strong again this morning. I want to be down by my surgery day, I figure the less I weigh the less I need to loose and the better prepared I am for my surgery. You will be fine! Overwhelmed!!! yes!!! but you will be fine.
  14. I asked my Weightloss Center and they only support vitamins that are sold by the WLC. It's a horrible place to go and I do not recommend them to anyone. Anyway, I bought Bariatric Fusion Tropical Fruit Bariatric Multivitamin Soft Chews for Post Bariatric Surgery Patients Including Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy, 60 Count, 1 Month Supply and I asked my WLC dietician and she was upset that I did not want to take the Celebrate MC r18 that they sold. I explained that the chewable they sell makes me sick and I cannot even force myself to eat them without getting ill. She said "fine" then told me that I could take the ones I bought but didn't tell me how many I needed to take or if the recommand two chewable a day were fine. Anyone know if two chewables a day are fine? I'm not sure if it's natural and I never noticed, but today I was able to see my hair start shedding and I had my surgery 3 months ago today. I haven't noticed this in the past.

    2 weeks post op

I was 2 weeks post op yesterday and am a total of 24 lbs down! 8 lb loss before the surgery the rest after :-) I am ready to be in the next food phase as I am super bored with liquids. I see the surgeon tomorrow for my first post op. Visit. And the nut, so hopefully I can begin soft foods. I'm excited for eggs! I also can't wait to really begin to exercise, just doing as much walking as I can right now. Still a little sore in places but excited for when I can kick it into high gear and really get on the weight loss train!
  20. Hello All... Today I am 17 days post-op and it was the first day I did not vomit. I was able to get up and do some things around the house without having to sit and rest every 5-10 mins. It felt good to have some energy and be functioning like normal. I am down 22 pounds since my surgery day. Hot flashes are the worst, at least one every hour. I know that I am not getting all my water and protein in but I just keep trying. Looking forward to everyday for improvements! I had to push back my return to work day by a week since I have been struggling, hoping for next week returning to work. One good note, when I look in the mirror... I can see the loss in my face!!! Food and insurance

Unless you have complications there is no reason you *need* to follow up with a bariatric surgeon. I don't know anyone who had surgery in Mexico who does. The standard advice I have seen is to see your PCP at 2 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-op. Have your regular blood and urine tests as well as vitamin and mineral levels checked. Weight and blood pressure checked and recorded. The lab work, without insurance, is what may kill you cost-wise. You may need to do some serious shopping around for that, but it's important. As far as food goes, I'm not much help as I tend to focus on eating for nutrition rather than to stave off boredom. I really don't care if I eat the same things over and over again, so I don't ever really think about "new ideas" for food. That said, here's mostly what I ate during weight loss phase: breakfast: chicken or beef roll-ups in romaine lettuce (with pickle relish, hot mustard, etc.) lunch: chopped chicken breast with green veggies and a little light salad dressing dinner: poached egg on refried beans, tuna salad bake, lamb chops, steamed curried scallops, steamed cayenne pepper shrimp, chicken breast baked in yogurt, turkey-spinach-goat cheese burger patty, sardines in mustard. Good luck!

    Almost there

Hi Wendy, Welcome to the site and congratulations on your upcoming surgery. I was banded in November 2007 and am nine pounds short of my goal of 150 lbs, which would mean a 136 pound loss since then. The band has been an amazing intervention for me. It is not a magic wand, but a tool which you can use in order to change your behavior around food and your relationship towards eating. I guess the most relevent advice I have for you is to follow your doctor's instructions for the post op period to the letter, and to share here often. It's great that you have a supportive husband even though he is not "one of us". If he can't understand why this is so important to you, try this: climb up on his back and scream in his ear "FOOD! FOOOOD! I WANT FOOD! FEED ME! FEED ME NOW! FOOD!". Then climb down off his back and tell him that this is what your life is like now and you don't want to go on this way. Let me know if this works. All the best, keep reading and sharing here - this site has been an essential part of my progress. -Bandpal
  23. While I'm newly out from my Sleeve surgery (I had my surgery May 27th) this is not my first weight loss surgery. I am 29 and I got the lap band surgery when I was 22. This is a big decision but if your life is severely impacted by your weight and you have tried and tried to lose weight without results you should keep considering weight loss surgery. I hope your family is like mine was when I started my first journey when I was 21 and sees how much you struggle and understands this will help you immensely. I did not have success with the lap band and had many complications (many people have and it was not as successful overal as they had hoped it would be). I had mine removed in 2012. I started down this journey again a little over 6 months ago and I am very hopeful. This is a huge change though and this surgery is not to be taken lightly because you can severely hurt yourself if you don't follow the directions. If you have any questions about the process and what it's like I'm always open to talk

    Suddenly Terrified

The "Hair loss" is called Telogen Effluvium https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/hair-loss/effluviums#1 It's not really "Hair loss" it's just a larger % of your hair follicles going into rest at once, so when they reactivate they shed the hair they were holding and that gives the appearance of "hair loss". Fear is normal, NSAIDs are not the only pain relief out there, there are options. Pretty much everything you've listed is normal fears, and pretty much, all of those fears, you'll laugh at down the road. I was 370 at my largest. I'm 210 now, I have some extra saggy skin, but it's really not THAT bad and it's totally hidden under even decently tight clothing. Just remember, staying overweight *WILL* kill you. If something was to happen during your surgery, the best place for that to happen, is in a hospital. No one but you can tell you if what you are going to do is right for you. You have to make that call. Weigh out all the pros and cons, and make your decision based on that, no one is going to look down on you for making the best decision for your life that you can.
  25. Hey fellow banders! My name is Lindsay and I am approaching my surg-iversary on April 19th. Starting this journey at 290lbs, I have successfully lost 75lbs and my goal is to be in onederland by July. My long term goal is to be a curvy 145-150lb bombshell. I like to keep that 5lb buffer just in case. It's been a slow, but steady weight loss since my surgery. Frustrating, exciting, and challenging all in one. Some days it's the best decision I've ever made and somedays I second guess myself. Did I choose the right surgery for me? My friend just got the gastric sleeve and boy did we go head to head when she announced her choice for wls. She's committed to the argument that my surgery will ultimately fail me, and I think that she was looking for fast results without considering the future. I chose the Lapband because I've never had trouble loosing weight. Rather, I had trouble with maintenance and loosing motivation at every brick wall. Considering my ripe age of 24, I thought the band would offer me more control over my body. With a sleeve stomach or gastic bypass theres more room to stretch out over time, the band offered adjustments. Having kids wouldn't terrify me as much because my band will be there to back me up at postbaby. Its hard to stay optimistic sometimes when I see her creeping up on my weightloss markers faster than I did post-op, but I try to remind myself why I choose the band. But it's hard not to wonder if I chose the right path. Do any of you ever think what if?
