  1. I don't get my first fill for another two weeks. i just started my full liquid diet today and I was very full after drinking a slim fast shake and a pudding.I couldn't even finish my slim fast. I was allowed to drink slim fast as part of my pre op diet I lost 10 pounds in a week.

    Frustrated

Keep up the good work and realize that we are all different. We certainly did not gain the weight in eight months, it took a long time to put it on and it will take some time to get it off. I too was banded in October 2007 (10/25) and to date I have lost 82 pounds (25 prior to surgery). Do not worry about the number, some have lost more and some have lost less. The thing to remember is it's going down, a slower weight loss is actually better. I am completly off my blood pressure medicine, C-Pap machine and feel great. Hang in there you are on the right path, enjoy the ride.

    Pre-Op Protein Suggestions

No I can use whatever I like, just has to be a protein shake. We don't meet our surgeon until the day of surgery. We go through a company and they set it all up for us. We are just told to drink shakes for 10-14 days prior. I'm thinking your doctors must be getting some kind of kickback.
  4. One of my incision line is infected, dr opened it drained it put me on oral Antibiotics. He said I will be ok. I am worried. Otherwise I am eating according to the diet and drinking plenty of water. I feel good too

    17 Days Post-Op

That's awesome! I'm still on full liquids til Tuesday but I've had some mushies out of necessity at lunch yesterday and today. (out with kids and no soup). I've lost 10 lbs so far and wish it was more! But--I'm feeling good and was able to hike about 7 miles with the kids yesterday without collapsing lol, so I guess that's a positive!!!!!! I don't get a fill til 6 weeks out so it will be a bit. Looking forward to losing weight--you'd think with the calorie restriction it would be falling off but not my body!!!!! Nope--I would have lived through the worst famine! Ha!

    Telling the kids

This is an awesome question. I think it's going to be hard for my 3yo to understand because she's very attached to her mommy. It even chokes me up thinking about being away from her. I think my 10 and 12 year old will have a well understanding and ask a lot of questions. Just not sure how to approach it and I know they'll have lots of questions!
  8. I'm cleared for puréed and soft foods as of Monday and Monday night I had amazing baked grouper and green Beans which went DOWN good but I felt pressure nausea all night. Then I had a wedge of laughing cow cheese, that went down great and no problems later. Had a ton of Popsicles because they cause no problems either, liquids all go down even orange juice. Tried tuna casserole minus noodles yesterday, tuna, cream of Soup and cooked peas. Very soft very mushy, and the first bite made me nauseous. No throwing up just dizzy/gurgly ick. Then I tried cottage cheese (my favorite!!!!) tastes very blah so I just wasn't interested in it, going to try later with added flavor. And right now I'm trying to eat chicken noodle soup (was okay'd by my doc as long as I mush the noodles in my mouth and not swallow whole) and I can't get over this dizzy tummy feeling. I haven't eaten ANYTHING but a glass of Water and a Popsicle today since 6 am. It's now 1:20pm. I KNOW I'm feeling partial hunger pains because they go away when I eat. But I can't push past this nausea to satisfy myself because I don't want to throw up. SW: 324 DOSW: 322 CW: 309 surgery date-7/10/13 Sent from my iPhone using VST
  9. I’ve now lost 61 pounds and beginning to notice something new! It appears that I’m once again on a normal monthly cycle!!!! I had a hysterectomy in 2000 and kept my ovaries, so basically I can go through a regular full cycle – just no period. For the last ten years that “normal” cycle only happens about every 3-4 months. Now for the last 3 months, it’s been happening every month! Breast tenderness, cravings, hunger for no reason, slight water retention and worst of all PMS! I’m 49 and just figured for the last 10 years I was that all favorite word of premenopausal……. Has anyone else noticed a difference in their monthly cycle after losing a large amount of weight?
  10. Aim for 30 minutes of activity a day. But start slow. Start with 6 five minute walks throughout the day. Then after a week try 3 10 minute walks. Then 2 15 and before you know it you are walking 30 minutes 2x a day. Congrats on your amazing loss!!!
  11. Hi Nikki Sorry I didn't see this until today. I had the band for almost 10 years and after about 7 years, I started having lots of complications. I always had difficulty with fills and unfills because my port flipped almost immediately after surgery. I did fairly well with the band and lost about 100 pounds. However, I regained almost all of that weight after 2 children, 5 months of bed rest and an injury from running. I started looking into revision mid-2010 and was given the choice of RNY (which I found out I couldn't have due to my severe anemia) or sleeve. I wasn't happy with either of those choices so after about 6 months of research I found out about the plication. I was going to go to Mexico but ended up finding a doctor here in Southern California who had just started doing plication. I was his very first banded plication patient, which was scary but somebody's gotta be first!! Anyway - I've lost a bit over 42 pounds in 15 weeks. I'd like to lose about another 50-60 pounds. I started at 283 and am now at 240.5. I am actually surprised that I've lost as much weight as I have considering I'm a revision patient. I track my food but not religiously. I ensure that I eat 50-70 grams of Protein and drink about 60-80 oz. of Water. I do exercise almost everyday and walk/jog about 2-3 miles per workout. I completed my first 5K a few weeks ago and am planning on wogging (walk/jogging) a 10K July 23. I have averaged about 10 pounds per month and have lost 42% of my EWL (excess weight loss). I've gone from a 22/24 (26 top) to loose 20s and almost fitting into 18s! My goal is to be around 170-180ish which for me is a size 12/14. I don't want to be much smaller than that as I prefer that size on me and so does my husband! PS-I have not had any fills in my band and I plan on leaving it completely empty.

Getting my band back together :)

Just a quick update. I had surgery to replace my band on Friday, 12/21 (supposed Doomsday.... ). Everything went well. I stayed at the hospital overnight and was released early Saturday. So far, recovery seems easier than the first time around. Some pain, but not the bad shoulder pain that I had the first time around. Perhaps part of it was that I knew what to expect. The hardest part is returning to "banders hell" over Christmas with all of the great foods around. liquids only this week and then onto mushys. The good news is that I have already lost 10 lbs of the almost 20 that I gained while unbanded. Truth be told, I wasn't overly tempted anyway. One thing that I learned while without my band is that I have adjusted mentally to this lifestyle.... I kept portion sizes small and, with a few exceptions, ate food that was good for me. Thanks again to all that wished me well.
  13. Hey guys, I haven't been on for a few weeks and I apologize for that. I was banded 9/28 and since then, my life has gone through several twists and turns. I would say the 2 weeks after banding went as smoothly as possible. My band was a little tight the first couple days, had my first "unfill" on day 3 and from then on was pretty good. I took about 8 days off of work. Then it turns upside down. I returned to work on 10/8 only to be fired on 10/10 (really out of the blue, too.) I've been working with a lawyer to get a settlement on my contract and looking for new jobs. Frankly, the past 2 weeks have been the worst of my life and they have NOTHING to do with my band. In fact, I'm so stressed out, it's kind of good that I haven't had a fill yet because I'm really eating at a pre-surgery pace. I have always been a stress eater and I've never experienced as much stress as I have in the past couple of weeks. I was self-pay, the first credit payment is now overdue (will they repo my lap band? <grin>) I talked my wife into quitting her job to stay home with our 5 year old about 2 months ago. I tell ya, it's been about one Chevy truck and a dog away from a country music song. The good news is that I'm still losing a little bit of weight. I may grab for the chips or fast food, but it's WAY less frequent than the old days. This still has very little to do with the band. I'm feeling little to no restriction unless I eat really fast. Anyway, I just wanted to check in and those of you that are of that Faith if you could say a few words for me and my family to see us through the next couple of weeks as I attempt to rebuild my life. Plus, my first fill is on Nov 2. So I'm not really sure how that will factor into all of this... I'm still really struggling sleeping and having any energy, I'm falling into a little more depression after really feeling that I was coming out of it after the surgery. All I wanted was a "normal" weight loss surgery (if there is such a thing) but I got way more than I bargained for. I am still excited about the band, but it's just way on the back burner right now. But this, too, shall pass.
  14. 4 weeks post op . I had a hiatal hernia I was not aware of at the time of my surgery and my surgeon fixed it while I was getting my sleeve. Well, I have no idea what happened but since my surgery I get acid reflux / heartburn (I don’t know which it is ) everyday at some point in the day. Not sure what causes it. I have a Doctor appointment Monday. But first how do I know which it is or is it both ? And most importantly..... is it going to go away. I’m so sad and discouraged ! I don’t look forward to such an uncomfortable feeling. HELP ! Anyone else had this ? hw: 246 sw: 235 cw: 215 gw: ? Sleeved :Dec 19, 2017
  15. I'm 5 days post op RNY and today I've had this sharp stabbing pain in my left breast. It only lasts a second and has happen 10-15x. Has anyone experienced this? I think it could be related to the surgery or maybe to the mostly clear liquid diet I've been on, since Ive never had this before. I was breastfeeding but quit about 4 month ago.
  16. I was filled 4cc at time of surgery (10/24/12). I'm going for my first fill on 12/12...

Need a Fill vs. Controlling Eating

I really think "I can still eat a 10" vegie sub" is not quite the right way to look at it. I really dont believe that any food is totally bad or off limits, or that being able to eat something specific that you fidn to be a problem food necessarily indicates you need a fill. But if you can wolf down a 10" sub really fast that's probably lack of restriction. If you can eat it with some effort then, I think we get bands to control our eating, and to eat less overall. If you eat a 10" vegie sub and nothing else till dinner and then at a moderate dinner, you exercise regularly and are losing weight slowly and steadily then SO WHAT if you can eat a sub? We didnt get bands with the express purpose of not being able to eat a specific food, it just doesnt work quite that way. I can still eat pizza, but only a very little, I can eat a burger but not a whole one. I do it occasionally. Generally they take so much freaking effort its not worth it and I dont really enjoy it, but I can do it. But once in a while, what does that matter. Chances are, if you cant sort out choosing healthy foods MOST of the time, and having those yummy things just as treats, when you go tighter, you will simply find other easier unhealthy foods to eat that will go down if the sub wont, the band doesnt MAKE you choose salad, vegies, fruit etc. So yes, to a degree you do need to control it yourself. It takes both - good restriction and some reasonable control. But of course, good restriction makes self control easier. Its just not necessarily a problem to eat pizza occasionally, unless it sends you spiralling out of control.

Will be banded the day after my B-Day!

I was just told yesterday that my surgery date is April 19. The day after my B-Day! Happy Birthday to me! I am 34 years old and a mom of 3. I live with my husband and children in Ohio. I have struggled with my weight all my life and I can't wait to have the band to help me with my weight loss. I work full time and my oldest daughter is 14 and my son is 2 and my youngest daughter is 1. I have a very busy life and I have made a promise to myself that I am going to do this for ME. I have spent my life raising my children and taking care of my hubby and have left no time for myself. I will keep you posted on my story and I hope to hear from all of you!
  19. I will be going through this after my Monday surgery. We discussed this topic in our surgeons classes. I got a therapist to help sort this out. I want to be slim. I will need to lose more than I had originally thought about. I am going for a 6. I have never bought a 6 as an adult. I remember being an 8 and a 10 but that was in 1985. If attention from others is making you uncomfortable then can you take the time to look into that? I won't be wearing tight clothes. It will be very strange to get attention after being "invisible" all the time I have been overweight. Also, can you post this same topic in other forums and Google this as well to get more information? I am so sorry you are uncomfortable. You deserve to be incredibly happy after being so brave! !
  20. I can't believe I actually just wrote that, let alone that it's true. I never thought I would be able to get sleeved, but did some homework and found hospital Jerusalem in Mexico who would perform the surgery on me. I started at 220 and am down 14 pounds on day 8. I'm shocked. I was very excited at first but had a rough time afterward. I had tremendously, really bad acid reflux the first few days. It hasvot much better just some here in there and when I drink cold. I stayed in Mexico for 5 days, 2 too many. The nurses we're not really nurses and no one seemed to know what they were asked a question. The biggest thing was that they didn't understand, even when they say they do. It was really bad. Back home now and trying to figure things out .

    New year new resolve

I've never blogged before but I feel the need for support and accountability of the members here. I've been banded since 10-7-09. I just went in Thurs for my 4th fill and just now am beginning to 'get it' I've been frustrated with not losing as fast as I expected....15 lbs so far.. all post band. When I went in for my first fill 6wks post op she put in 1cc and I swear I couldn't pass a sip of water. just gurgle gurgle so she let out .5cc and has been going slow since just .5 per visit. So now I'm at 5.4 in a 10cc band and this is all coming together now. Oh Yeah !! after 4-5 bites I'm done and fine with it. Love this feeling. Still dealing with head hunger and just the 'need' to eat. It truly is an addiction. My doc gave me a script for Welbutrin and it has really helped. Just a little bit of help to feel calm and not crave food. I used this when I did the phentermine thing a couple of years ago. I lost 60 lbs. but you know the routine...gained back all but 5 before my first lap band consultation. Anyway that's a bit about me. I feel excited that finally I understand 'restriction' and can see that this thing works.. I know there will be ups and downs (literally) but I have a good feeling about this. I have some questions about getting enough food. My gosh it seems like semi-starvation. I guess that's ok huh?

    So, It's a year later...

Well.. I am about 2 months short of the year mark but I am going to answer anyway. Things rarely get stuck for me. When they do, it has been my own fault. I have eaten too fast or taken too big of a bite. I usually know it the moment it happens. Thankfully in 10 months I think its happened total of about 10 times - so that's not so bad. There is a lot of thought about what to eat and I struggled with that. I planned every meal for months and then I said "I cant live like this" and I tried not planning. And you know what - it was worse. I know like to think I am somewhere in the middle. I plan, and surround myself with good choices but if something come up - it does. Eating the same things: I go in phases - so weeks I am on a taco kick some weeks its yogurt. But I dont think that would be any different with or without the band. I will say that I eat things now that I wouldn't have touch pre-band. I dont know why but I do. I was worried about my love of good food. But honestly, our love as grown deeper as I have slowed down to actually taste what I am eating. Does it get easier? After 30+ years of dieting and failure this feels like a piece of cake ..... dark choc with fudge ....and ice cream (kidding) The biggest changes are the mental- by far. But with time - greatness. At this rate, I should reach greatness about a week after I die!

    What happens in 20 years.....?

From what I've researched thus far, there is no known life expectancy of the band because it's only been around in the states for 10 years and it's only 12 years old in France. I think about the risk factors too and of the fact that once it's on it's there for life. If removed, patients turn to their old eating habits and gain the weight back and then some. Apparently, your stomach gets a little bigger after you've had the band for a while. So, if the band is removed you're able to hold more food. It's a permanet solution. I wasn't too thrilled about that, but then I think about my health NOW and how I seriously need to lose this weight. Like the previous reply-ers - you have to think about your health and not worry about the band itself. I'm going for my surgery towards the end of Nov and I try not to think about the fact that this thing will be in my body forever. I only think about the health benefits. I'd like to be alive long enough to find out just how long does this thing last... Good luck!
