    April 2019 Surgeries!

Hi Ya'll! Today is my one year surgery anniversary!! Just thought I'd pop in to see how everybody is doing.... I can't believe it's already been a year! It went by super fast. I'm so glad I did it and I'm almost to my goal weight.... Lots of love!!!

    7 weeks post op...

Just stick to your program. With a starting weight of 205, you're what we call a "lightweight", and you're just not going to lose as fast as someone who starts at 300+ lbs. As long as you're seeing a downward trend, even if it's slow, you're good.

Shoulder Pain 9 months post sleeve

Hi! The shoulder pain post surgery is something I experienced as well. The drs office said it was likely post surgery gas. It worsened in the evening, and faded during the day, like someone else mentioned. It took almost a year And a half to get it behind me. I had / have a lapband and found it to be a rather common issue post surgery due to the phrenic nerve. Understand other wls can have this too. I recognize sometimes it can be eating too fast, however that’s the common go to...it’s gotta be something you / me/ we / Aren’t doing right. When I found out this was more common than was not and brought it up to the office, the approach was - duh, of course it could be a nerve. look up the nerve and become aware. I really hope it helps you get some clarity and comfort knowing it just might not be that you are “eating” too much, too fast, too soon, too late, not chewing well enough, ate something you shouldn’t have and all the other things that we tend to talk about. Best of luck to you.

Shoulder Pain 9 months post sleeve

it sounds like gas and reflux and eating too fast. If it’s improving over time, my guess is it will continue to improve.
  6. Hey everyone! I'm looking for advice and encouragement. I had my weight loss surgery in December 2016, so I'm 3.5 years out now. I dropped around 160 pounds, from my biggest being 360 and my smallest being 187. I was so blessed to lose so much in about 14 months. Maintenance was relatively easy at first. I purposefully gained 15 pounds because being 6'2 with a large build, 187 started getting me questions about being sick. 200-205 is my personal goal and sweet spot, where I feel the best and think I look the best. Fast forward to September 2019. I was having my first endoscopy since my surgery, as a follows up to Barrett's esophagus that was found when I had my bypass. What I thought would be routine, turned worst case scenario when I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Apparently I'm in that 2% that has Barrett's that actually progresses to cancer. Luckily we caught it very early stage and I have been able to have ablation therapy treatment versus the typical chemo and radiation. I've developed recurrent esophageal stricture due to scar tissue from ablation therapy, causing me to choke frequently. Needless to say, it's all been very scary, and my eating got out of whack for a while. I've quickly gained weight and I'm at 220.2 today. I need to lose 20 pounds ASAP. The current COVID-19 situation and working from home, having access to food 24/7 coupled with stress eating is proving difficult to overcome. I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has words of encouragement or advice to help me get back on track quickly. 3.5 years and I was very proud to be maintaining at my goal weight of around 200, and now I'm scared the scale will continue to creep up on me.

    How Fast is Fast Track

Maybe there's a difference in insurance requirements. The program I went through had a "regular" track of 6-9 months and their "fast" track was 3-4 months. I have BCBS of MS though so it could be due to my insurance.

    How Fast is Fast Track

I actually used the Fast Track program, and I paid entirely out of pocket. They had me on a two week pre-op diet first, which I started on December 24th. I made my first appointment (the check up, talking with the dietitian, and the EKG) for January 2nd, came back in to speak with the surgeon on the 3rd, then had my surgery on the 6th, IV vitamins on the 7th, and I was back home on the 8th (I live in Nevada, so it was just a drive for me). Honestly, the program is worth it. They pay for the hotel they put you at, transportation to and from Blossom and Warm Springs surgical center where you'll have your surgery, and it really is "fast track." The people there are lovely, and almost all of them have had the surgery themselves, so they are really sympathetic to any concerns or fears. It was also nice because I didn't have to stay in a hospital. I was up and walking around 30 minutes after I woke up from surgery, and then pacing around the hotel the rest of the night. It was much less stressful on me because of that.

    How Fast is Fast Track

Some people on a bariatric support group I'm in have said fast track is as quick as 2wks.
  11. Shoulder pain you are describing sounds similar to what I have if I eat to fast. I’m also 9 months out. My surgeon said it was gas pain combined with reflux from eating to fast. Whenever this happens I take some gas-x and use a hot water bottle to relieve the pain. Hope this helps.
  12. I recently contacted Blossom Bariatrics after my insurance refused to cover WLS by saying it’s excluded after they preapproved it. I need a clearance from my cardiologist to participate in the Fast Track program, and every time they fax the paperwork to my cardiologist they say they are not receiving it. I am very frustrated by this process. Blossom is my last chance. I know the times are difficult right now, but I really want to do this before my 50th birthday next year. Any advice? How long does the Fast Track really take? TIA

    Fasting?

I had the Loop (sips) and no it's not okay. I was told to eat all three meals and at least two snacks a day. We HAVE to have a MINIMUM of 80 grams of protein in addition to much needed nutrients that we get from food. You can't get that if you fast. We're already risking malnutrition because of the malabsorption of the DS and skipping meals is a no go. Don't do it!

    Fasting?

Is it ok to do intermittent fasting with the DS/ sips? My point of wanting to do this is not for weight loss. I just want to take control of my eating habits. Is it safe for  malabsorption?

    Lower BMI - Skin/recovery

Hey.... Happy for you that your insurance will cover. Just an FYI: If you want to really make sure, gain 10 and that would put you at a 40BMI and you are a shoo-in. I did and would do it again and again and again. Back in 2009 i was at 223lbs... which put me at a 40 bmi but no co morbidities. So just to be on the safe side i put on 10. Approved in 3 days. Gain 10 to lose 89, yep yep. 5'2" began at 232. I was banded. Weightloss was slow and i hated that... then i realized that losing it slow was really a blessing. I has no problems with my arms, leg, but and even my boobs (44G). My problem was my stomach. I had 2 sections, hysterectomy, gallbladder at the time. Then the LB. My boobs went to a 36H. and so this is where i stayed for years..... at 143#. In 2012 i had a TT with MR and lipo on flanks. Then i lost my band due to a slip in 2017 and in 2.5 years i gained 30lbs. Hit menopause and everything went to crap. No matter what i did. So this past Aug. at 173.5lbs i had the sleeve done. I've lost weight pretty fast. I can see the sagging now in my arms and butt.... and i lost a couple of cups in the boobs.... now a 32FF. I say losing weight slowly worked i better for me the first time...... I am smaller than i was at my lowest with the band.... 143..... Today i weight 128
  16. What's your secret to losing so fast?! Amazing! Sent from my moto g(7) supra using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. This is my worry. That it’s more how fast you loose the weight and now how much you loose.

    Quarantine and Drinking

you're what we call a "lightweight", so you're not going to lose nearly as fast as someone who starts out at over 300 lbs. You are doing just fine - at least in the weight loss dept. you're NOT doing fine in the drinking dept - and I"m glad you said you're going to try to cut it out. Like someone else said, my surgeon didn't allow drinking for the first year after surgery - and even now, we're only supposed to drink occasionally - and maybe just a glass of wine or two (or the equivalent) the few times when we DO drink. Alcoholism isn't uncommon among bariatric patients because of transfer addiction, so watch it...

  20. Hi Grace, it’s a soft ring that goes over the small pouch to inhibit pouch stretching later on down the track. My problem was mainly that I used to eat one giant evening meal a day. I’m hoping I learn to eat like a normal person, it was just kind of insurance against regain in future years. The scope was normal, which is great news, but it confuses me as to why I am struggling to live with theses changes whilst others seem to be having a smooth run. Yes, I’ve lost 58 pounds from the day of surgery, my last weigh in was Tuesday. I was a few kilos more before I travelled for surgery (I live in a fairly remote town in the middle of Australia). It’s been 2 calendar months since surgery today, it feels like forever, it really has been a terrible time! Hey Jaymmee, I can’t eat that much yet either, I get a weird hiccup after 2 teaspoons of whatever I can manage and I stop. I have an aversion to all meat and egg so don’t get any of that in. I’ve been managing a really thin watercracker with cheese over 20 minutes, but the cheese has to be cold! Are you eating too fast, or is it a new type of food you are trying? Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. L x
  21. Yes, I am still overweight and I am in my range but the way that it has been explained is that I have hit this point too soon and should not be losing weight at this fast of a pace. I journaled on my own after my Dr. told me that I would most likely need revision surgery. All of my blood work, which is done every 3 months, always comes back great. I kept a food journal on my own and I was able to slow it down to a loss of 2-5 pounds per month. I was blessed enough that insurance paid for my surgery.
  22. Here’s an interesting development: When I started this post 3/26, I was 2 weeks post op, still on liquids, dreaming about eating real food again, never yet having overstepped my portion control boundaries with new pouch. Fast forward to now 5 weeks post op, and my new pouch having made me KEENLY aware that SHE is the new sheriff in town making the decisions on what and how much I will eat, not me. And if I didn’t believe her? Just try it. I did, a few times, I took that last bite that I shouldn’t have taken...😩 Whoa, at 5 weeks I would no more ask when I could eat a BIG salad!😖 The very thought of it reminds me of how sick I would be. The beauty of this “new tool” we have, is that it truly is like Pavlov’s dog...a few times of hearing the bell has a way of shaping behavior, because you sure don’t want to revisit torture again. Moral of the story, SO much changes in the weeks following surgery, the behavioral changes that I certainly needed. Thanks to all of you veterans who already know this stuff, and patiently guide us newbies along! And yes, of course they “told” me this stuff, but some of us hard heads only learn hard lessons through the fire of experience.
  23. I began this process originally back in October. Due to the up front $, I postponed my appts until after Christmas. I was set to have fast track surgery in early May. I called my clinic Monday since I was scheduled for a follow up appt yesterday morning and I assumed it would be canceled for now. They said no for me to be there at my appt time. It's a 3 hour drive for me to get to my nearest clinic. After that appt, my clinic called to say all elective surgeries have been postponed until further notice. That they would let me know when they opened back up. WHY they didn't tell me while I was there is beyond me. Then right after that phone call today, I got another call from the Pumonary clinic (same hospital different building) saying they wanted to reschedule my appt from March that they canceled due to Covid-19 and wanted to see me next Tuesday for my lung test. I think this test is to see if you can handle anesthesia and also if you need a sleep study for sleep apnea. I'm a little confused why I'm still going on thru the process if the main office is closed until further notice. I feel insane at this point since it's been such a rollercoaster with different departments telling me different things. I have BCBS of MS insurance. I'm worried if it's postponed too long, the tests won't be valid and my insurance won't pay for a second round of testing. Anyone else having conflicting feedback with their processes? If anything it's good to say it to people that may understand my frustration with not knowing if I should be hopeful or prepare for disappointment.

    First (tele)visit tomorrow

Well congrats on your first visit! I also had to do the six month weigh-in program to qualify and it flies by fast, though at the time I thought time was going too slow lol. I never had a bariatric appointment be telemedicine, but that'll probably be my 3 month check-in lol since my appointment is supposed to be at the end of next week and somehow I just don't see them wanting me to come in with the whole pandemic going on and all... My best advice is just try your absolute best and I'm sure you'll do great! I hope things go well for you on your first visit!
  25. the above poster is right - 95 lbs is a healthy weight for someone 4'11" tall. Maybe I'm missing something here ??? Also, why are they talking about doing revision surgery? You mean reverse the duodenal switch? I was a slow loser from the get-go, so I can't relate to losing super fast, but the last 20 lbs or so were a bear to get off. My weight loss slowed to a crawl (we're talking like 2 lbs a month). I also gained 10 lbs after hitting my lowest weight, which I really needed to do, and I stabilized there for two years (I've since gained 10 more lbs with I did NOT want to do, but we're working on it...)
