    One year, one wild ride.

    Well, here goes nothin'. This is my first blog entry, I've honestly never written a blog before but I thought I would give it a shot. I have quite a bit to say and I feel safe saying everything here. Let's start off with my weight loss journey and where my weight problems stemmed from. I was always a yo yo'er. I would be thin, fat, thin, fat all my life. I was into sports then I would stop and balloon back up. In highschool I was a 18 and thought I was fat, little did I know, by the time I was 23, I would be nearly 400 lbs and a size 30 in jeans. I was miserable, I got married young, at 22 and before then I was on a steady incline of weight gain, after the marriage, it got out of control. I was eating my feelings and I didn't know how to stop. The topic of surgery came up when I had blood work done (i'm anemic) and my doctor told me that I was borderline diabetic and when I saw the # on the scale say 394#... I knew something had to be done. He referred me to the Bariatric Institute of Wisconsin. With my insurance I was required to do a 1 year treatment plan and several times within that year, I nearly gave up and thought it wasnt worth it. Boy, I'm glad I stuck it out. My gastric sleeve surgery was May 16,2013. The day that changed my entire life. The surgery was good, the next day in the hospital was torture but again, It was 100% worth the struggle. I spent my time looking at before and after photos and watching youtube videos of people who had the surgery and wondering "will I ever be this person with these kind of results?" and the answer is yes. If you want it bad enough, it will be you and I am living proof of someone who changed their life with one struggle at a time. The first few months are the worst, your life is basically taken on a rollercoaster with no seatbelt. You have to learn slowly what you can and cant handle, how to count protein, and slowly get into a work out regimine. At about 3-4 months, everyone besides me was noticing the weight loss. I honestly thought I was at a stand still and scared of developing body dimorphic because I wasn't seeing it but everyone else was. I just thought everyone was being nice knowing I had this surgery done. At about 8 months, it hit me. I looked through old pictures of myself where I thought I looked great and to my own self, I was unrecognizable, thats when things started to really hit me. The hard work, the 5-6 days a week at the gym, the sacrifices were all making sense and I was ecstatic. It's a strange feeling. okay.... at 10 months, my personal life started to take a bad turn. Before my surgery, my husband told me he would be supportive and was excited for me to go through this and better myself and he promised to take the plunge with me with changing eating habits and working out....that didn't seem to be the case. I was more active and wanting to experience life because well, I got my life back! and all he was concerned with was going to buffets, ordering pizza and laying in bed playing video games. Our sex life (tmi) was non existant, We started to only speak a few words a day to eachother. I was going out with my friends constantly because he would never want to go anywhere. Well.... a month ago I filed for divorce and am moving into my own place tomorrow. It's really liberating to have the strength to do this, I was unhappy for at least 2 years but this surgery gave me the confidence I needed to break free. I'm only 25 and yes, I got married young and I understand, marriage is a commitment but a person can only give so much until they break and try to work on things so much before it becomes a lost cause. I never knew I had this strength in me and I owe it all to the gastric sleeve surgery. It saved my life in more ways than one. So if you're on the fence or not sure about it... think about all the doors it can open in other aspects of your life. I'm now just over 1 year out, almost 190# down, went from a size 30 to a size 14 in jeans and i wear a size small/medium in mens tshirts, when I used to wear a 3x. it's a pretty amazing feeling! thanks for reading

    An UNfill Adventure (long)

    Kelly, With nine pounds gone in two weeks, I'd be a little suspicious that I had at least some dehydration going. IF that's the case with you, you might "gain" a few pounds upon rehydration. Don't panic if that happens! I'm rolling around in the ethnic glories of the holidays right now. Lasagne on one side of the family and tamales on the other. I haven't been able to eat either in over a year, so MY current weight gain has a little more to do with food than with rehydrating.:nervous Pasta, masa (the "bread" part of the tamale), enchiladas, tortillas, potatoes and salads and oranges, even celery! So...I'm off to the gym! Sue

    Hello Looking Head Everyone's body is different, but it took me about a year. The first three months were fast and then a stall. It picked back up and I began losing again. Weight gain here and there, because I have lower extremity edema, which is Water weight. I had good and bad days, but it worked out. My edema is really bad; I had water gain in 24hours that was a jump of about 20lbs. I have to take Lasix and potassium @ day and wear compression stockings all day. Don't worry too much, you'll be just fine. Always comeback to the boards for support. I do. Krys
  4. I had my band removed earlier this year For the same reasons you had yours removed. I had my band for 12 years and loved it. I have gained 40 lbs since they removed all the fluid. My doctor recommended RNY when the band was removed and with the weight gain I was experiencing, I agreed. I have been going through all the pre op testing and requirements from my insurance company. Just got approval this week. I hope to be a success story but I would love to hear from others who have gone thru this as well.

    April 14th I Become A Sleever

    Hey there I'm doing well! Went to my group nutrition class which was about lifestyle and diet before and after surgery. Was very informational appointment. I have to do a FULL liquid diet no 1 meal a day for me even though others have been allowed to by their surgeon but each surgeon can be different. On the sleeve vs bypass this is strictly my opinion whichever WLS u choose is a personal decision between u and ur surgeon based on ur unique situation. Bypass may be a better option for some but not everyone and this goes for the sleeve, bypass, band, switch, and any other WLS. In regards to weigh loss and the ability to gain it back if we don't work our tool weight gain is a great possibility. Now for me I'm not putting my body through holy hell to have this major surgery if I'm not willing to make the lifestyle changes. None of these interventions or surgeries are a magical fix they r tool that we have to actually use and work at to help us not only lose the weight but to also become healthier beings. Weight loss is a huge plus but we also have to focus on the wealth of other benefits we are getting not just the weight loss. I don't knock anyone choice of WLS I just suggest u do the research, know urself, be open with ur surgeon and pick the best surgical procedure for u. We r all in this together and here to support one another regardless of which procedure we decide to have.
  6. You know, Jennifer, the Doc was actually right about that, strange as it might seem. Some people DO lose weight from using an AD. In the case of Effexor, though, it's pretty well documented that weight GAIN is more prevalent. I read somewhere, years ago, that the AVERAGE weight gain for Effexor use was about 50 pounds. I don't know how accurate that it, probably not very, but in MY case, it was very accurate. I'd also suggest seeing a shrink for help with your AD meds, if you aren't already. PCP's really, really do NOT understand the complexities of dealing with "mind drugs", certainly not with the "cocktail" concept of Psychopharmacology. Some of these shrinks can really "tune in" to just what is causing your depression and they know the chemical combo that can relieve it! :bored: HH

    Miss my band

    I feel bad for everyone who wants to get rid of their band. I had problems with acid reflux and the band slipped - when they tried to fix it, I ended up having a reaction and they had to remove it. I miss my band. I liked having control over my eating. I liked the fact that food did not control my life. I am 50 days out of surgery and have gained 25 pounds. I really don't think I am eating more than when I had the band but the weight keeps coming on. I continue to exercise 60-90 minutes a day. I measure my food. I track my diet and exercise. But it just doesn't seem to work. And this weight gain is real. I can hardly sit in pants that I could take off without unzipping 2 months ago. Sorry to complain but I am hoping someone who has lost their band will have some tips for me. And living in Baghdad doesn't give me alot of people to whine to...

    having second thought....

    Research is always good. Have you considered the sleeve ! You loose weight a little faster, you can eventually eat what you like "BUT A LIMITED AMOUNT OF FOOD" , you are no longer hungry "That's my thing" I had my knees replaced do to weight gain, I lost 120lbs. by myself in order to get those knees replaced. Then Banded. Lost 28lbs., and the band blew on a fill. 4cc band blew on 2cc's "defective" I now have insurance again and will be going in this month to see what they want to do or change to. Just remember it is like a tire, it can go bad at any time. Then gl with getting it fixed especially if you have it done in Mexico. You have to go back to your original surgeon to fix there mistakes. "THAT'S THE WAY THE SURGEONS THREWOUT THIS STATE EXPLAINED IT TO ME ! So I'm letting you know that somewhere you will need follow up work. Check this with your surgeon.. Shirley.
  9. Hey Babe, your labs all look very low to me. (I never thought I'd be able read lab results, I'm a computer geek, not a medical geek! sheesh! So, Addison's (adreanal insufficiency) is the opposite of Cushing. But those of us who are Cyclical Cushing's can and sometimes do have both because we either have too much cortisol, Cushing's, or not enough, Addison's. It just depends on how far your disease has progressed, if you have this. If you post your results on the Cushing's help site, the link is in my signature, and ask for help reading. There are folks there who really understand lab results. Addison patients typically are very skinny, Cushies are typically fat. Buffalo hump, central obesisty (all our weight tends to be "trunk centered" as opposed to equally spread about) and bright purple stretch marks and the inability to lose weight, or worse yet, rapid weight gain, and a red moon face. Not everyone has all the symptoms of course, but those are all the hall-marks of Cushing's. I strongly hope you spend some time on the Cushing's board, since that is one of the best places to get information on Cushing's. PM me if you need me. You have my phone number still, right?     HELP!!! Im not losing...

    I know several people with PCOS personally, although I don't have it myself. It seems that PCOS, insulin resistance and being significantly overweight all go hand-in-hand in every case. What I am not sure about is which came first, the chicken or the egg. Does being overweight lead to insulin resistance and PCOS in people that are predisposed to developing it? Or is PCOS the primary issue and weight gain and insulin resistance are side effects? In my friends that do have it, they can go on extreme diets, exercise an incredible amount and only have a very small impact on weight. It is almost as if traditional weight loss methods are minimally effective when PCOS is an issue. Does that also seem to be the case for those of you who have it?
  11. When you say you can eat more than you should be able to on what are you basing that? Are you really eating a lot or is it just that you have heard/read/been told that you should be satisfied on 1/2 cup of food or something similar? You have to be able to eat enough to keep you from getting hungry and to get good nutrition. If you serve your food on a small sized plate , eat that and are satisfied then you are doing great. Don't go getting overfilled just because you think that you should be satisfied on a miniscule amount of food.What is more likely to happen if you do this is that you will eat high calorie sliders that can cause weight gain, or you could get reflux or worse. Your loss of 5lb certainly sounds like you are in the green zone to me.

    Sugar free ice cream?

    Treating yourself occasionally is one thing, a morbidly obese person eating ice cream pre-op regularly is another. That should be a time to be very focused on learning the new food and lifestyle guidelines, giving up the old habits that caused weight gain, and creating new healthful habits. Once the weight loss is complete and healthy habits are ingrained, then have an occasional treat.

    15 yrs into gastric bypass

    I’m just starting out but I have read that it helps to do a pouch reset. Having hormone, metabolic and other medical issues I can relate. Try to pinpoint what medication might be affecting your weight and why. For example I needed beta blockers and the generic caused more side effects that included slowing my metabolism. Once I got on the name brand and also adjusted my calories it helped. If you can pinpoint the medication ask the doctor about switching to something with less side effects of weight gain. Also see an endocrinologist to have hormones checked and anything that could be throwing off your weight there. You might try some natural hormone supplements ie. Wild yam, black cohosh, (my head isn’t working to think of them all) 15 years a lot can change and it takes time to re-evaluate and adjust. 2-Week Pouch Reset Diet The 2-Week Pouch Reset Diet can help you if your weight loss stalls after getting gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, lap-band, or another type of weight loss surgery. There may be a time after weight loss surgery when you wonder whether your pouch has stretched, or when you get off track with your eating.   14. I've got to agree with LJB on the weight gain thing. A lot of them say they cause weight gain in the list of side effect. I've been on a variety of psych meds through my adult life and have always found I put on weight with them, or maybe it is just eating away my depression?? I'd say to follow your doctors orders. Even if the xanax is helping you, being addicted to it is not worth it. You will lose the weight anyway...it may just take longer.
  15. prozac can cause weight gain, but the majority of gain usually happens in the first few months and it generally is around 10 lbs total throughout the course of treatment. it shouldn't keep you from losing with this surgery, however. If you are concerned about the meds and your doc is open to it, you could talk to them about switching to a non-SSRI, like wellbutrin/bupropion. people tend to lose weight on it and it has less libidinal side effects. if you have ever had anxiety or manic symptoms, however, it is not a good idea to switch to this med.

  17. I had gastric sleeve surgery April 2013 before that I had lap band surgery put in and takin out...I weighted 205 at surgery my lowest weight after my second surgery was 147 now I'm back up to 160...I need help getting back on track!!!

    Your story sounds so much like mine. Was even born a big baby, and overweight as a child, but not obese until I got into college (which also happens to be when they finally tested me for hypothyroidism and reluctantly started to treat me for it). I was really active in high school - lettered in two sports - and as much as I walked in college, the cafeteria food did me no favors! Bad eating, a decrease in intense physical activity, the alcohol that frequently accompanies college days, and hypothyroidism led to a 50 lbs weight gain in less than two years. I just had my endoscopy today, no abnormalities found, so I'm excited for my sleeve date of May 12. I, too, had some initial good results with the Band, but slowly gained back a bit over time and then it just seemed to be rejected by my body.

  20. I posted a small introduction but in case you missed it, I am a 40 y.o. wife, mother and nana to a beautiful family. My family is my life and I have spent more than half of mine taking care of all of them. My weight gain started after my 4th child, after starting work in an office and after quitting smoking. But, I guess that doesn't matter now. What DOES matter is that I took a step to change my lifestyle and was banded on June 24. I've had some minor and major set-backs but after 2 fills I have more restriction now, so I am on my way. food has always been the focus of our family gatherings. I would cook these huge meals, have family over and we would eat, talk, play games, etc. The hardest part for me was that I felt that I had to give that up, in order to stick with the lab band diet. If I cooked a huge meal, I felt too tempted to over-eat. If I didn't cook the way I used to, I felt guilty for depriving my family. If I take a walk around the block, I sometimes feel like the house will burn down. The other day I went to an essential oil conference at a beautiful resort. I wasn't there 10 minutes until I was getting calls from home and I had to run to save the day. It just seems that my family has always known that I would be there for them and the minute they think I can't be, they freak out. Don't get me wrong, they would do anything for me but they are so darned dependent upon me!! I am physically and mentally exhausted. I work full-time then come home and take care of my husband, my 14 y.o. daughter and my husband's 23 y.o. son who is living with us and not working! My married daughter is in school in the evenings so I take care of the grandbaby for her. I know I am rambling but my point is...why do I feel so bad if I do anything for myself? What is with this stupid guilt complex and grieving for the old me? Ugh! Am I being selfish? I fully intend to join the support group in September, but am a little worried about it due to all the posts I've seen about it on here. Thanks for listening, I am sorry to be so negative!

    Serious Thoughts.....

    I do truly believe that many people get the procedure due to wanting to get someone to notice or think that with this surgery their insecurities will be gone. Society has already made it a trend that smaller is best, instead of healthy is best. So that I believe is where people on here begin to obsess over the rate of weight loss even as little as 5-6 days out. This surgery WILL NOT...I repeat WILL NOT fix mental health issues. And recognizing depression or other mental struggles early in the process, I believe in the end will enhance the weight loss long term. Stress and other mental factors can cause weight gain, ultimately leaving the sleeve ineffective. I personally don’t think that all know they are suffering mentally until after the surgery. So a post op therapist should be something to consider.
  22. Oh I bet it has been a "battle " and omg I totally gave in to cravings lol and then some... I'm trying to make mostly healthier choices but not always successful.. How about you? I used to be a thin person 10yrs ago, I wish I could claim pregnancy but being a guy that's not possible lol... My weight gain stems from stress and depression ???? I'm on the mend now so willing to change ????

    Now is your healing time. You have been on a liquid diet and it is normal to gain some weight when you start on solids, but it's water weight because you do not lose or gain a pound of fat in a day. My dr told me to expect a weight gain between that post op app. and my first fill. Don't stress about it and stay off the scales. The weight WILL come off!!

    Starting To Notice! Big Time

    We think alike , I have not hide the procedure from anyone, I have so many people that are looking at me as the guinee pig, lol. but if my surgery goes well and it will I have many that will follow. I ask what is there to be ashamed of, I am more ashamed of my obesity. I was always a large guy but after I quit a nasty tobacco habit 3 yrs ago the weight gain started. every time i stepped on a scale it was a larger # than before , i started going into a depression and quit doing allot like dancing (which I love) and many other things. Finally I hit 343 and a good friend of mine had pass away and I didnt have clothes to fit loosly to attend his funeral. At that point I said enough is enough. I want to help myself and help as many as I can. I am a leader and cant wait to share my success with others.I am down to 298 now and getting more excited . Wednesday is my sleeve day, leap year, well I want to leap by the end of the year without scoreing numbers on the richter scale.
  25. You are probably on antibiotics and pain meds. Surgery can really mess up your body. They also gave you 4 bags of solution. Your body is in shock after surgery. I would say, the surgery is the main reason for the weight gain. It will pass. Parts swell, the body is adjusting. I would also suggest you follow up with your primary doc. It's always best to have a second opinion.
