    GERD before surgery advice

I really struggled with what surgery to get, because I have pretty severe NEED, although it's controlled with Nexium. I was self pay, so I knew there is no chance for me to get a revision. My starting BMI was 69 and my surgeon recommended Loop DS to me. He never seemed too concerned about the GERD. I didn't want to spend so much money and not be able to keep the weight off, and since he said Loop DS has less chance of weight regain, I chose it. I was willing to take the risk of my GERD worsening. I'm a little over 3 weeks post op and I haven't had any issues with GERD so far. I hope I don't have any! Sent from my moto g(6) using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. I had the sleeve nearly 10 years ago. I gained a lot of weight since then and am blessed with the possibility of a do-over. I had a consultation today to start the process for a revision. An EGD will help the surgeon determine which surgery is best for me--the DS or the RNY, but he suggested I research to get an idea of what I might prefer. Per my reading, the DS is for people with severe morbid obesity (BMI >50), which I do not have. Also, there's supposedly a greater risk of complications from this surgery. However, I read it provides higher weight loss than the RNY. I read about possible ulcers, bowel obstruction, etc and I'm afraid. Is there any way to prevent these issues, or are they just inevitable with any type of bypass surgery? (I know this is a question for my doctor, and I do plan to ask.) Ultimately, like anyone, I just want help to get thin and healthy. I don't want to be sickly or have life-threatening complications as result of weight loss surgery. I want to take full advantage of this 2nd chance, lose all the weight I didn't lose the first time around, and KEEP IT OFF. If my surgeon does not have a firm opinion on which surgery I should get and he leaves the option to me, then I'm not sure whether I would get the DS or the RNY. Do you guys have any information or experience that might help?

    Reached intermediate WL goal!

Hi! Congratulations!!! I had a gastric sleeve about 6 years ago and slowly gained back 50 pounds now weigh 200 lbs. Now I am looking at a revision to A Sadi or MGB. Leaning more towards the Sadi. When they do a revision is the pouch also addressed? Any advice on the Sadi is appreciated. What about the bathroom issues? I’ve read so much but no one really explains the impact on daily life. Thanks🙏🏽

    Sleeve revision (re-sleeving)

Does it really resolve IBS? I wasn't in the market for revision, but this would be worth it! Is there research on how it improves IBS? What is the recovery period? I had vsg in 2012, need to lose 80lbs to get back to goal...which I'm committed to seeing this through, but I'm just off of an IBS flare up, and it's horrible.
  5. I had a sleeve 7 years ago and lost 85 pounds over 6 months. I had no loose skin whatsoever, but I have regained the weight and I'm due to have a revision to a Mini Gastric Bypass in a few weeks. I'm curious to know if you are more likely to have loose skin after a revision for weight gain? I am also now 7 years older 🙂

    Acid reflux and band fills

Yes I had that experience and had such a bad episode it sent me to ER , through CT it was discovered I had bad Esophagitis from the reflux and the band so I am getting a revision tomorrow to bypass ( with sleeve it can make reflux even worse)

    August surgery

August 13th revision lapband to bypass
  8. Woohoo!!! I’m doing a revision from band tomorrow to RNY , and I seriously can’t wait to be able to eat without that god awful stuck feeling or my reflux ! Cheers to everyone 🥳🥳🥳
  9. I don't think you'll be disappointed with your decision. I had the revision from the Band to MGB in Dec of last year and couldn't be happier. I had the band for 12 years and never lost any weight. Now, since having the MGB I've lost 83 lbs in 7 months. I always hated how the band felt when I ate, now I just feel full. It's not painful or aggravating like that band was. Good Luck to you!
  10. I think this has to be a personal decision, but I had a sleeve first then was advised to have a revision to MGB. Since I struggle with the worst reflux of my life. Dr's just referred me for a secondary revision to RNY and said that is what I should have done in the first place. After my sleeve, reflux was marginal, but after MGB its intolerable. I've had 5 EGD's and 2 Bravo tests and a countless number of different meds to get to the point they would refer me for the RNY and I've wasted years feeling horrible (mind you some of the problems I've experienced had more to do with the California health care system). So I know different things work for different people, but that was just my experience.

    GERD before surgery advice

My surgery has a sleeved stomach and while I don't have GERD I have EOS (a.k.a EOE: Eosinophilic Esophagitus) which causes acid issue at night. I used to have to take two acid reducers at night, but after my surgery I only need to take 1. I was surprised by that as I actually thought it'd get worse... So while acid issues do tend to get worse for most people who have VSG (or DS or Loop DS), I think there are also a rare few who it improves upon. At least that's what I've taken from my own experience. In the end it comes down to whether you're willing to take the risk that you may have to end up having to have a revision because it makes your GERD worse.
  12. I had a sleeve done in July 2019 couldn’t keep anything down due to newly developed gerd (never had an issue prior). Lost so much weight in the first 3 months (100+ lbs). Had to have a pic line put in to get my nutrition levels up to where it was safe to operate on me again). Had a revision to gastric bypass in February 2020. Since then I’ve had 3 instances of vomiting but the first was what I assume was leftover acid because that happened still in hospital after revision. The second and 3rd times were my own fault drinking to quickly after eating. I also had a hernia repair at the time of my revision. I originally wanted the bypass but my team talked me into doing the sleeve as my insurance requirements were easier to get approved with the sleeve. I will say I am very thankful I had the revision done and am feeling much happier and healthier now in the 13 months since my original surgery I’ve gone from 350+ to 175 and from 4x pants to a pair of large today. I worried after the horrible outcome from the original surgery that I might be making a mistake having the revision but today am very happy I did.

Revision due to Reflux and scared!!

Not a revision but had bypass and no complications at all 🤪
  14. I had a sleeve to RNY revision for GERD. I did not have reflux before my sleeve, developed it a couple of years later. I was on the maximum dosage of omeprazole (80mg) for a few years and still had breakthrough acid, which gave me an esophageal stricture. I regurgitated everything I swallowed. Still, I didn't want RNY, so I found a surgeon who was willing to explore alternative surgeries with me. However, after a bunch more testing that uncovered some previously unknown issues, I decided on RNY. Had the surgery on 6/29. I had one episode of reflux two days after surgery, I figured it was the last bits of acid in my stomach trying to make me miserable one last time. No acid since. No regurgitation. No vomiting. It has been a massive relief not to wake up in the middle of the night with acid in my mouth or throat. I am really pleased with the RNY so far.
  15. bypass has been around for a long time and there have been so many improvements on it over the years that it's really a safe surgery now - not much riskier than sleeve. I'm not a revision, but I had bypass because I have GERD prior to surgery. I'm very happy with it - no regrets at all (I'm over five years out)
  16. Good Evening! I had a follow up with my surgeon today from a EGD in July. He's scheduling me for a revision to bypass and hiatal hernia repair asap . I'm scared! Then following that surgery maybe a few months later he'll schedule another surgery to repair another hernia with a mesh. I'm going thru it right now. how many of yall had complete relief from reflux after getting a revision? Have you had any other complications with bypass? any regrets? Of course I'm doing the research on it but I'm afraid of it, that's why I didn't get it to begin with. I can't wait to enjoy wls..I haven't reaped any benefits of it yet. my stats: 5'4" HW 261 SW 249 CW 226 GW 170 or just to be healthy at this point. Sleeved 4/9/19 had multiple EGD with dilations due to vomiting and multiple setbacks and developed horrible acid reflux.
  17. I typically have 2 shots of espresso with my premier shake over ice for the past 3 years had a revision and wondering if anyone has had a bad side effect with trying a shot of espresso with their premier shake. Just wondering just had my revision 8/3 doing really good but already missing it the Protein Shake is to thick without it thank you

  19. There has to be an issue as to why it would warrant a revision , as my insurance coordinator explained to me they won’t approve it unless there is a medical reason for it , I had tried to get a revision from lapband to sleeve last year but I didn’t have enough documentation for medical necessity so i got declined . This year a lot happened and I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea , GERD, Esophagitis so it made me eligible , but because of my GERD and Esophagitis I will be getting RNY instead due to reflux issues with Sleeve . As far as switching insurance companies just because you didn’t get something with one company would it void the ability to get a revision with a different company , it’s all about the companies Bariatric guidelines and how they measure medical necessity .
  20. How much regain have you had? Is the regain from not following a long-term exercise and diet plan or are there other health issues that prevent you from following these plans? You're correct, they're most likely not going to cover a revision if there are no underlying health issues aside from regain.
  21. Hi Everyone, I had a vsg back in 2016, I’ve had regain and want to have a revision. Of course insurance won’t cover unless I have gerd or other issues. I did my surgery with GHI/Emblem Health. If I switched insurance to Aetna or another insurance would I get approved because I didn’t do the 1st surgery with them? I’m hoping someone can help me with this question 😞
  22. I’m not interested in revision either. I’ m trying my best to get these 15lbs off but I feel like I take 2 steps forward and 3 steps back! It’s been that way my whole life but I refuse to give up! I’m adding this HIIT training ( high intensity interval training) workouts and resistance bands to my workouts to see if that makes a difference...
  23. Hi there! I'm with you on the struggle. I had vsg in Fall 2012, lost 120 lbs. Had babies in 2014 and 2016, so I never even made it to the 3 yr mark at my goal weight 😫. I've so far lost 40 pounds, on 1200 calories per day, and I'm starting a reset today. I never thought to try Phentermine, but I will be making an appt to get some this week! The struggle is very real! We can encourage each other. I am not at all interested in revision, at this time.
  24. I first looked into WLS about 15 years ago. At that time, gastric bypass was the only option from most surgeons, and I was scared away (and talked out of it by my family) due to the potential complications. It was mostly being done as an open procedure; the surgeon I talked to was doing it laparoscopically only for patients with a BMI below 40. When I started looking into it again this year, I was leaning toward the gastric sleeve because it seemed like a less extreme, less scary version of WLS. But when I went to my consultation with the surgeon, he pushed me toward gastric bypass, mainly because I started with a very high BMI (60) and gastric bypass tends to result in slightly more weight loss. The more I have looked into it, the more I became convinced that gastric bypass was the way to go. Maybe it was just confirmation bias since that's what the surgeon thought I should do, but I learned that the complications are actually not that different between sleeve and bypass. They are both done laparoscopically and have relatively quick recoveries. You have to take vitamins either way. Dumping is more common with bypass, but could happen with either. I have never had acid reflux, so I wasn't too concerned about that, but I have seen a lot of people on this forum end up with GERD after having the sleeve, and a lot of people getting revisions from sleeve to bypass. I saw a surgeon on YouTube (Dr. Vuong) say that everyone should get the sleeve because you can always get it revised to bypass if necessary, but to me that's crazy -- I don't want to go through a second surgery! I'm 3.5 weeks out from bypass so the jury's still out on whether it was a good decision, but that was my decision process.

    Is anyone else as disappointed...

@Luv2cruz Unless i read over it, No one has asked a few very important questions. What is your height? What was your beginning weight? Are you logging your food? Are you exercising? What does your diet look like on a daily bases? The reason, if you have less to lose, you will tend to lose a little slower. A person who had 300lbs to lose will lose it faster that say a person that has 100lbs to lose. My story is a little different than some.... but anywho.... After being here for over 10 years i have seen and read many different stories. I have also experienced it with some very close friends. I've had friends like myself who had the band (lost 2017 gained 30lbs). Lost there band and have gained it back or revised to a different WLS. Some with success and some without. I have a few that had only the sleeve and either never lost or gained it all back. I've even had a few that had GB and either gained some or all of the weight back. I do have a few friends that had the band and have kept their weight off for over 10 years. The point is.... ALL WLS have their goods and bads. Ups and downs. It's how you as a person handles YOUR journey. (ok just read your last post, so i'm taking out this part) I would start at the begging, look within yourself. Maybe seek a counselor (it's helping me). Otherwise, i would start tracking your food (if you aren't already). Get yourself a good exercise program (even if it's just walking more and faster). I wish i had journaled.... I write myself inspiring quotes on my bathroom mirror. I know you didn't want to hear it, but its true and hard not to do... But, try to not compare yourself to others. I compared myself to others all the time, then someone years ago told me that..... So now i have on my mirror..... Envy is the thief of happiness. I wish you only good thoughts on your journey.
