  1. Hey gang! I'm currently on a six month path to get the gastric sleeve. My BMI is quite high, so I've got to lose 100LBS before I can set the date. Anyone here succeeded in such a feat, and on to get the sleeve? I'm determined, but I just don't know if it's possible for me, as I'm so heavy it's quite hard to "work out". Plus, I just found out I'm Diabetic, and what to eat was already confusing for me, but now I'm at a loss. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Pre-op sleeve newbie

If you are diabetic - they may suggest getting Gastric bypass instead of the sleeve. I don't know how they expect you to lose 100lbs on your own but there's a forum by weight loss (ie. 200+ lbs) that maybe has some info to help. Good luck!

    Smoking

Honestly they didn't give me a specific time to need to quit just said I had to. surgery: April 28th~~~current weight loss 20 pounds
  4. I got reflux after the sleeve but its not bad enough that I need a prescription yet. I take an over the counter pill at night and I'm good . I'm 3 weeks out- have not vomited and I truly believe that having the band first already prepared my to eat slow and I recognize the signs to stop eating. My weight loss is slow- I haven't been exercising yet because I've been so busy getting caught up at work. My energy level is through the roof. I'm not sleeping much because I'm not tired and am still wide awake during the day. I have Plantar Facitis and am praying that the doctor can help me with that because come springtime, I love walking the track. I don't want to give that up!!

Super oily skin. Ewww. It's not bad enough I got some bronchitis thing the night before so no one knew I was sick till after the surgery. Coughing and any abdominal surgery is very much living poo, but, my skin and hair also need to become so oily that I feel all slimy. Ugh. I mean I'll live but, ewe

    Sleeved 3/28..

Congrats DeDawn making it through your surgery. I believe you are on the right path by exercising and taking walks to regain your strength and improve your conditioning that will support your weight loss down the road. I believe exercise and increased activity maximize the results of this surgery and your surgeon will be most likely be pleased to hear that you are doing so. Good Luck to you and welcome to the forum.

    Daily diet

Just curious - I had my sleeve December -down 50 pounds.. I feel like I am eating too much. What does your daily diet look like 7 months out? How many calories are you taking in. My weight loss has slowed down and I am worried old habits are coming back. Starting to feel out of control.

Starting into week 3 post op No problems making a transition from liquids to semi-solids. Able to take thick soups and even tuna and chilli. I can feel full after about 6oz. of food. I get a feeling like I'm going to have the pain I had from gulping air. That's enough to make me shut the eating down. That stays for about an hour and if that is the new full feeling then this should be easy. I've done great on keeping caffeine out and not drinking after a meal, although I forget sometimes. Lower tract is finally firmed up now that I'm getting something other than tea, water and the protien shake. With the current weight loss my productivity is way up and I'm feeling great now that I can eat an egg or thick soup. My wife is glad too. I've been pretty miserable watching them eat and my mood has not been very good. First fill scheduled for Feb.6th. They adjust the fill using a flouroscope so they can get it right.

    Lap Band vs Gastric Bypass

Hi Leslie, I chose lap-band over RNY for several reasons. In order: 1. Safer. Statistics show that RNY is 10 times riskier (1/200 RYN vs. 1/2000 band I believe) 2. No malabsorbsion. 3. Less invasive - no cutting, stapling, re-routing or removing. 4. Less likelihood of regaining weight - which is my particular problem area. 5. Time - I could have lap-band in 3 weeks, instead of having to wait 3 years. I had to deal with this now. 5. Reversible Downside: Cost, slower weight loss. Some may find that the necessary follow ups, ie fills, can be problematic - but my clinic is extremely convenient, within walking distance of my office so it was not an issue with me. Hope this helps. Alex

    Post Op help

Well Thank you! yes I'm sure I am not the only one, and on top of all that loss of exercise now working from home makes it even harder, And your right it seems like I am in the fridge every hour.. since all of this I have gained about 20 pounds and its driving me crazy! I was doing so well, I defiantly need to try to cut back the calories and maybe eat much smaller portions! Thank You

    I have a date!

I think most people go through the "last supper" syndrome. I could tell you to resist because the more you gain then the more you have to lose. I won't tell you that. It is normal. I was just thinking today that going to a buffet would be a waste of time for me now! Last supper syndrome is normal for most. Keep this in mind. When you can't eat it or don't want to eat it because your weight loss is going so great then you really don't miss it as much as you think you will. At least if we are alike you won't. Good luck!

    Protien shakes

Now that you have said 60g is 240 calories then a 20 g serving is 80 calories. Add back in 5 g calories because 25 g is what we really want per serving. That puts the Amplified Wheybolic 60 25 g serving at a comparable amount to nectar shakes; that is, both have 100 calories. It is a good powder to take daily, but I would definitely not take the suggested 60 g serving size in a single dose unless you are in serious weight training. It works as a good shake during post op weight loss, especially as a recovery shake after exercise / training.

I know what you mean about losing 100# and trying to imagine what that would be like. I am a LOT farther out than you considering my band time as well as my sleeve time and I've lost 132#. I never thought this day would come. During weight loss it is exciting each time the scale goes down, but after you get to goal and have time to think about it it's different. You sit back and think, "WOW! I lost a person!" Hind sight is the eye opener with WLS, that is when you figure out all the stuff you learned while you were losing it but didn't realize you knew it. If I knew then, what I know now... things would have been easier in some ways and harder in some ways. I have a box of Velveeta cheese in my cupboard. One day after I lost about 20# I was at the store and I realized... I've lost **10** of those! That's a lot of Velveeta cheese. Today when I need to get back on track I look at that old, nasty, expired, gross cheese and realize.... I have lost 66 of those. Melt that and glue it to your hips! That's a lotta lotta lotta cheese. That box is probably freeze dried by now but I do not care. I will never throw it away. That was what kept me realizing just how much I was losing and today it's my icon. ;o) In my wildest dreams I never thought I would reach a point where I had over 100# to lose. When I finally looked at myself and realized I was pretty darn fat and it was time to do something about it I just got depressed and ate more. Today I look back and I think it was all worth it. I wouldn't want to regain but I'm glad I have this journey. I have learned more about myself than I ever would otherwise. I have skills and knowledge that I wouldn't have if I hadn't have lost all that weight. I think there is something about being a 100# plus - person. Meaning, those of us who have over 100# to lose. It's just different, the mindset, what we learn, what we experience. Hard to explain but it's different emotionally and physically. I'm not saying it's better or worse, it's different. I'm glad I got fat because I wouldn't have had the journey. Someday I will be the wise old lady down the street and all the little children are going to want to come to my house and hear my stories. I already have a ton of them! But it's a journey like this that will create that little old lady I'll become someday. Lisa, I see you as being exactly the same. I think you will be the cool old lady down the street that kids will love.

Before my surgery, I always wondered what if would feel like to lose 100 lbs or more. It was such a surreal thought, one I couldnt fathom even in my wildest dreams. It seemed like a dream that would just stay that way - a dream - my very own fantasy. I struggled to get to my 100 lb loss. My weight loss was going great when I reached my 75 lbs mark, then it all went backward. This was my 5 months post surgery. This is when my appetite really kicked back in and I always knew I could eat more than your average Sleevester. I had a goal to reach 100 lbs by Thanksgiving - well that didnt work, even tho I had plenty of time to do it in...so then I moved the goal to Christmas...still didnt make it. I think I finally reached it in Jan of 2009. So, now its been 13 months since my surgery and Ive lost 111 lbs....in one way, Im totally thrilled with that, but on the other hand, Im really angry that I havent lost more...why am I angry, bc Ive done it to myself by continuing to eat the wrong things which has made me go up and down in weight.. One good thing Ive realized is that I do know how to maintain...which is not what I want to yet...but at least I know how to do it.. For the past few weeks, Ive steadily lost about a lb a week, sometimes more, sometimes less...but on average, about a lb/week. Im not giving up. Im not even halfway to my goal. As my ticker indicates, I have 137 lbs to go to reach my goal of 150 lbs. Even at that, I wont be "skinny" but I will feel like a million bux!

    Taste Changes

Besides your taste buds changing so too may your sense of smell. So don’t be surprised if the smell of some things turn your stomach too. No idea why it happens but it does pass. I love my vegetables but for a good month or two I could only tolerate steamed cabbage & cauliflower. Was so glad when I could enjoy them again. I also couldn’t stand anything sweet but that was likely because I cut it out of my diet wherever I could. No loss there I still avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners & sugar alternatives as much as possible. The restrictive diet you’re on pre & post surgery can change how sweet or high fat foods taste to you. The thing is not to start eating them again so your desire & enjoyment of them is not reinvigorated.
  17. Hi everyone. Well, I had my first appointment with the surgeon on April 18 and all went well and quickly, which surprised me. The surgeon knows, and we discussed briefly, that I was diagnosed with NASH last year. He was non-plussed and said that would improve with weight loss, mentioned nothing about it posing a problem during or after surgery. However, a co-worker of my husband had the banding done, is having to have it re-done (whatever that means), and he told my husband yesterday that his surgeon told him that if he found a fatty liver that he would terminate the surgery. So then I went online to read about NAFLD and NASH (which is what I have) and gastric sleeve surgery. Confusing confusing confusing information..... A couple of research papers said it helps and doesn't pose too many complications unless the person has cirrhosis and/or portal hypertension. As of my biopsy last year I have neither of those. But other articles, etc say that the liver will "Shred" or "Tear" and bruise due to it's larger size due to the fat. There wasn't any mention by my liver specialist, nor was it in the copies of the biopsy results, that stated my liver was enlarged. BUT... which of the information is true??? Will my liver shred or tear if it's fatty and they try to do this surgery, or.....???? Anyone else have fatty liver, and if so... what was your experience?
  18. Weight loss is so personal it's hard to say. The Premier ready to drink protein from Costco is very good. If it makes you feel better my doctor wanted me to do a 500 calorie a day liquid diet but I think I was allergic to them. The lean cuisine I would look for higher protein with lower carbs. Many LC are very high in carbs.

    Just need to be listened

Lots of nasty stuff is stored in fat. As it's melting away it's released into your body. Also, the surgery itself sends your hormones out of wack. The beauty of it is that your body is recreating a new set point. A new, healthier metabolism. For the next year you have a fantastic opportunity to get that set point stabilized at a healthy weight. Think of this time as a great time to optimize your weight loss and increasing your chances of lifetime success. I sat my husband and son down for a chat about my potential moodiness, regrets, etc. it was important that they know so anything I may have said could be put in context. My son was always asking me if I was feeling regret or if there was anything he could do to make me feel better. I loved him for that. You have come to a great place for support. I came here because I have no support group in my area. You will get encouragement advice (good, bad, nice, not nice) but most especially you will get honest and forthright answers to any question. And I mean any question. There are no boundaries to propriety here:-) Good luck and hope to see you on here more. Take care

    Hopefully starting a new journey

:confused:I have my first apt Monday to meet the doctor and dietitian. Making my list of questions, trying to keep from being nervous. Worrying can I do this? Not eating much after the surgery, follow the pre-surgery diet suggestions. I am on a 3 month physician supervised weight loss program for my second insurance. My place of work is going to be a problem as to when I will actually be able to take a leave of absence for the surgery. And my second insurance coverage expires on 11-30-09 so I know it will be a race against the clock between work and having the surgery before the second insurance coverage stops. Oh well, if anyone has any insight on something they wished they would have asked the doc prior to surgery please share.

New Question on LapBand vs Realize - Help?

It's your weight loss journey. Your doctor is doing the exact opposite of what the latest research states determines sustained and faster weight loss which less aggressive fills.

New Question on LapBand vs Realize - Help?

These bands are designed completely differently. Please keep in mind the Realize Band IS the Swedish Band with 1996 design, there are no significant changes to the band design. It came out prior to the first generation lapbands in 2001 in Europe. The Realize band has to be put in empty which means you have zero restriction until your first fill 6-8 weeks following surgery. The LapBand AP is designed to be implanted with the first fill of either 3cc or 4cc, standard or large. It gives you mild restriction and begins working immediately, thus the higher percentage weight loss makes logical sense. The data you are looking at is with the older generation LapBands, not the Third Generation Lapband AP. What I provided the only study on the AP Bands. The Realize band has not been out for a year so it would be impossible for your doctor to have a comparison on the average excess weight without having them tracked for a year each. Does he have data on these patients and has he averaged them out since January on a spreadsheet to compare?

New Question on LapBand vs Realize - Help?

No disrespect towards your surgeon be is not using the reccomended priming technique as per the Allergan who makes the band. He has a license to practice medicine as he sees fit but in the study I provided that is how it was done and that is how Allergan instructs the physicians to prep the band before it is implanted for maximum weight loss. I called the company and they sent me some information on it. I met with the nurse prior to my surgery, it is required from my doctor and she he explained why this priming technique is being used and gave me the Obrian guys name to google to do more research. I have the AP and I can assure you it works, I have had restriction since day 1. There was 2.7cc in the band on my first fill then they added a cc. My next fill is Late sept but I really don't even think I need one.I have lost 40.2lbs since the liquid diet week before surgery and the surgery date of June 30th. Trust me it works- The old Lapbands and the Realize bands are implanted empty- The Lapband AP is not. Im 100% positive because I have it myself!

New Question on LapBand vs Realize - Help?

One of the benefits I liked about the Realize Band was the software that came with it. I know the Lapband is developing its own software but it isn't available yet. I track everything I eat, with complete nutritional break down, all of my exercise, my weight loss, my measurements, they supply recipes, advice, plus my surgeon's office can track my progress if I allow them access. The software was the selling point for me. Also, everyone is different. I had the Realize band installed w/o any Fluid and I am having excellent restriction. I am six weeks + out from surgery and I am very pleased. I am averaging 3 pounds/week loss but I expect that to change as my body gets used to the lower calorie input. Bottomline, talk with your surgeon. They "should" have the best advice as to what is the right band for you.
  25. I gotta say, I feel much better hearing everyone else's comments. I'm in "hell" myself at the moment, lol. I was banded on the 6th of August, had my first post opp visit and I'm due for my first fill on Sept 8th. I'm trying so hard to continue the weight loss but right now, it doesn't wanna come off. I know I'm being a bit anxious here and I need to be patient but I don't want a gain before my first fill either. I'm just trying to figure out how my first fill is gonna help the weight come off when I'm not really eating all that much right now as it is.
