Protein Shake Alternative
loserbob replied to Deathstroke's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Im Bob. Im not required to do a liquid diet but am doing one anyway. I started yesterday(Sat) and my surgery is scheduled for Wed. the 10th. Im hoping 5 days is enough to help "shrink liver". Anyway I went to Walmart and bought a couple cases of protien weight loss shakes called "Equate", I believe theyre walmart brand and they taste very good, I bought chocolate and strawberrys & cream. Ive only tasted choc. so far, they also had fr. vanilla. It has 230 cals., 10 gr. prot., 2gr fat per 11oz can. The 2nd best part is it was only $5.00 a pack(a few cents/I believe 8 cans). Im very impressed with the taste. The label says"compare to slimfast", so its very similar. -

These are pictures from my weight loss journey that I have been on this last 8 months with some before pictures scattered in here and there(and of course, my Grandson and inspiration). I have lost 90 pounds and now only have another 12 pounds to go. I am wanting to start toning now and hopefully in a few months just start maintaining my weight. This has been a long road with some bumps in it, but I wouldn't change anything. I feel so much better, have so much more energy, and I love going to the gym!! I am thankful for all the support of my family and friends as I have been on this road. https://flipagram.com/f/kGVsefpRaq

My name is Khristina, and I am 39 years old. I have struggled with obesity all of my life. My weight is out of control and I am going to die if I don't stop this insanity. My food is out of control and I can't stop stuffing my fat face. I have battled and won other addictions, but I can't stop myself or push myself away from the table. I obsess about food all day every day and I need help. I have save up around 4000 dollars and my currrent insurance does not cover weight loss surgery. I am willing to go to Mexico. I only live about 6 hours from San Diego so I believe that is where I will go for my surgery. I am glad that thereis a forum for wich I can ask questions and talk with others about my issues.

Hi and welcome. I do not know why they block it out but I have seen it before. I worked with medical insurace and biling for several years. Pacificare is a tough one but I think if you follow their rules to a T you should be good. be sure that they cover surgery for weight loss==not just consultations. Keep us posted on your progress. I would also encourage you to work with a Center of Excellence in your area if possible. All the best, Melinda

I am also new to this whole concept. my seminar is on the 16th this month. i'm hoping I can have everything go smoothly and get a date early 2013. since I have to wait for my short term disability to be active at work. I've heard diff things bout the supervised weight loss.. it seems like its depending on who the docs are that that part is required. best of luck with everything.
-
I did my supervised weight loss with the surgeon not my pcp. Because I live an hour away so the test he wanted done he had me get my pcp to schedule and order them. Started in April and had last weigh in October 4th. Now just waiting for insurance approval

I have been listening to Dr. Duc Vuong's podcast about successful wls patients. He has one of the highest success rates with wls patients in the country. What he says about the one thing that a patient can do to insure success at weight loss and keeping the weight off is to let the overweight food addicted person you once were die. Just let her die. So tonight I lit the candles all over my house....I brought the last alcohol I will drink in a while. I toasted all the coping mechanisms that kept me safe from harm...the fat that kept me unattractive to the men who would abuse me.....the food that made me feel better on cold lonely nights. The thick layer of distance I put between me and the cruelty of the world. And I said goodbye. It is sad, it is hard, I'm not sure how I am going to cope without that protective false self to keep me safe. But she's dead and I am going to let her die. I hope you will all join me in saying "Thank you fat self for all the years of keeping me safe and invisible from the world. But now I'm old enough, strong enough and experienced enough to take care of myself without you." Ashes to ashes Dust to dust Goodbye.

Tomorrows the Physc eval
Lila21 replied to JennChap's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I really feel like it's an important part of the process, and it kind of bums me out that some doctors just have you fill out a questionnaire. For one thing, a big part of this is mental. You can find ways to overeat with the sleeve or any weight loss surgery, and you should be prepared for that. And there are people who have severe eating disorders who should get a handle on their issues before they attempt surgery (I am not saying they can't do it, but bingeing and purging can be life-threatening with the sleeve and you really want a support system in place if these are your issues), and that is a serious issue that should be looked at. I feel really lucky that the psych. I met with really tried to help prepare me mentally for the changes and what kind of "head" work would be required of me. -
Anyone do a pre preop diet?
KarenElaine replied to rbmk14's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pre-op. My insurance co (Tri-Care) requires a period of time to learn healthy eating and weight loss prior to surgery. Prior to seeing the nutritionist I had given up soda which was huge for me. My surgeon gets in my face and says, you are fat because you are addicted to food. I was warned before I got in there with him (I had my big girl panties on thank goodness). Also helped that he spoke from experience--he and his complete staff are banded. The surgeon staright off said get down to 30 carbs a day. Once I looked at food lables I was shocked. Several weeks later I saw the nutritionist--now I don't eat rice, pasta, potatoes. I'm gluten free, so I already don't eat bread. So, 30 carbs...totally doable! You really need this "pre" pre-op time to learn a new way of eating and that eating is truly overrated. We've been eating all our lives, some of us longer than others. I really wanted to jump in and get that surgery pronto quick. I know now, that had I done that, it would have been disasterous. We have to really learn, understand and come to grips with how we got here first. -
loose skin is a very individual thing depending on so many factors. Some people have a lot of it, others don't. It's hard to tell how yours is going to be. Like the above poster said, your age is a big advantage, but you're probably going to have at least some with a 100 lb loss. For most of us, though, it's pretty easy to hide. I knew mine was there, of course, as did my husband and doctor, but no one else did. Most of mine was in my abdomen, so I just tucked the skin into my jeans or leggings and wore slightly oversized, longish tops to cover it up. Ta da! Gone. I did finally get sick of looking at it, though, and had it removed, but I highly doubt anyone who sees me can tell a difference. Naked - yes - but with clothes on - no. I just want to add that a majority of pre-ops and early post-ops seem to be really obsessed with loose skin. I've worked with pre-op groups for the past two years and that question comes up EVERY TIME. I would also say that after losing all that weight, many of us (me too!) wonder why we wasted even one brain cell worrying about it. Losing a ton of the excess weight MAJORLY offsets the loose skin thing. I would take my loose skin any day over weighing 300+ lbs again. ANY DAY!!!! btw - here is a picture of me BEFORE I had plastic surgery. I lost over 200 lbs. See all that loose skin? I don't, either...

Pre-Insurance Approval Weight Loss Question
VSGMEPLZ26 replied to MNovalis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good afternoon, Usually as long as your bmi doesn't lower, the insurance company wants to see that loss of weight. Losing weight shows that you are trying. As the gentlemen stated above, you still may want to speak to your bariatric team or nurse just to make sure. Sent from my SM-G360P using the BariatricPal App -
My name is Heather. I am 33 years old and have decided to have the LAP-BAND® procedure after a very frightening diagnosis of an ischemic stroke in the early part of summer. While the only effect of the stroke is a weakened left eye muscle, it scared me straight. I also have a co-morbidity's of high cholesterol (possibly high BP), migraines and some mild depression in the past. I am 5ft 9in. I have been on every diet imaginable and well we all know the outcome... Wonderful losses at first, then big gains! Woohoo!! NOT! Anyway, I am currently 249.6 pounds (10/26/09) and hell bent and determined never to make the 250 mark! (Pipe dream, I know!) I had my first appointment with Dr. Wilfred Aguila in Tampa, Florida on (10/26/09) and have my psych evaluation December 1st to find out how crazy I really am! I met with the nutritionist on Nov 12th, and then the packet of information goes off to my insurance company, (Humana). Then my surgery date.. target date is 1st or 2nd week in January 2010. I am excited and really ready to take care of ME!!! but I can't do it alone! ME3.... ME, My doctors, and YOU! Very much love and wishes of success to all. Heather

For me the depression would come and go. While I was losing I was on top of the world but when you hit goal and don't have that natural 'high' I definitely suffered from food withdrawal. I decided to go to therapy and found that food was a coping mechanism that I had developed. I had always told myself that I just liked to eat too much but it was deeper than that. Honestly, I think therapy should be mandatory with any weight loss surgery as I think we can all benefit from it but that's just my opinion. Just know you are not alone and you can always get help.

Hello and congrats on the surgery and weight loss so far. I was wondering if you also had to go through a 6 month wait before surgery. I hear some talk of that and I was wondering. I am just getting started and have an appt with my primary dr next week. Thanks Tanya

Hello! I am new to this, and I don't really have anyone that I know who has had the surgery, or wanted to so I have so many questions and I'm hoping I can make some friends here who may be able to help! I started my diet on September 4th in preparation to see a see an obesity specialist --- I am in my pre-approval stage, I saw an obesity specialist on Oct. 2nd who took my weight and set me up with tons of testing, and information. She specializes in using methods other than surgery to help with extreme weight loss. I did not know that when ibsaw her, so I attended a bari-seminar and was assigned a patient advocate who told me the specialist I was working with does not recommend surgery for anyone - which is confusing bc she told me she thought it was a good option for me. Now she referred me to a family doctor and I am set to go see him this Friday Oct. 23 - My insurance calls for Three months of a medically supervised diet and I don't know what date to start from? Or even what the insurance calls for as far as a medically supervised diet? If I choose not to go with Jenny Craig or weight watchers, and just do the plan my Dr. and I agree on - does that count? Or do I have to see a nutritionist once a month too? I have an appointment with a nutritionist, but the dates will not line up exactly! I am so confused, and between the politics of the specialist, the patient advocate telling me that the diet starts the date the Dr puts in his notes and not to worry - I am worried and a little confused! Can anyone help?

Celebrate the half way point. *****
Jachut replied to want2beme's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congrats on making it half way! I voted 10% - any weight loss with the band is worth celebrating because in many cases and with reasonable effort, its weight that will never come back. -
OMG you have done fantastic !! 120 lbs is awesome!! Unfortunately the fat flab is not going to go away unless you have surgery. Skin is not RNY friendly, the younger you are the more likely "some" skin will shrink back but as you get older your skin losses alasticty (sp?) and it will just hang also it depends on how big you were and for how long. Once skin gets streched beyond and you have stretch marks it difficult to get it back without surgery. I am 54 and have been heavy on and off, my arms are flabby and I have a bit of a fat flab of a stomach which will not go away, even if I was 110 lbs that stomach skin would still hand and just be all wrinkley. I wish I had $$$ for a tummy tuck !!!

I think the rogaine would work fine, but once you stop using it the hair may fall out again... I would reccommend letting your body do it's thing... I lost hair from 4 months to 7 months post op (quite a bit), now I am back to normal like nothing ever happened!
-
I would of looked into Rogaine if I thought it would help. But I have a thing about putting unnecessary chemicals into my body and Rogaine is one of them. I do take biotin and silica and my hair loss have stopped and my hair is about 2 inches long in new hair growth. I'm 7 months out. so the hair will grow back. If I was losing my hair because of a pattern of baldness in my family and I didn't have this surgery, I might consider taking it. But why spend the $ on Rogaine if the hair loss was due to surgery and will grow back? It's kind of like a waste of $. Just my opinion.

Hi Mick, Actually, just the opposite; if anything the sleeve will help your situation. You can potentially get rid of your diabetic symptoms with the sleeve and a proper high Protein / low carbohydrate diet. And if you have only been diabetic for a short period of time -- less than a year or two -- the odds of this reversal are very very good. The news that you are diabetic should probably strengthen your resolve to have a weight loss surgery. And the surgeons deal with diabetic sleevers all the time. In fact, most insurance companies need to see that you have one or more "co-morbidities" in order to approve the procedure. (The usual co-morbidity list includes Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, a high Body Mass Index number, sleep Apnea, High Cholesterol / Triglycerides...) I would say that you are in the right place at the right time. You had already come to the decision that you want to have this procedure for a better quality of life and you can also reverse a terrible disease. You said that you don't know much about diabetes but I have seen it in my family all of my life. My sister is a blind amputee who has no feeling in her feet; she has 8 stints in the arteries around her heart. My brother died at age 47 from heart disease cause by diabetes. My grandmother had alzheimer's which is now clinically linked to diabetes. My great uncle was an amputee from this disease. I found last year that I have Type 2 diabetes. My surgery was 9/23/11. I have already been taken off of all of my diabetes medication. I hope this helps. I wish you all the best. Ms.C.

April marks my 5th month of a 6 month medically monitored weight loss plan that was required by surgery. I’ve done everything else that the surgeon required and now I’m just waiting. I’m starting to get nervous about whether or not my insurance will approve me for the surgery...or that I will have gained weight and not be able to get approved for the surgery. According to my PCP and my surgeon, I meet all of the requirements for the surgery and I’m down 7lbs. from my starting weight but I’m struggling to lose anymore. I can’t seem to help stressing out about it all. What do you do to get out of your own head and not stress? Any words of encouragement are welcome!

This question should really only be answered by your Surgeon / Dietician / Health Care Manager / Primary Care Physician. I was not given any or much instruction to this. The only things that I will watch out for are carbonation in the drink, which being a year out now I do take a few sips here and there. Also, transfer addiction is another thing to watch out for. Also, during the weight loss phase, drinking acohol really should be avoided almost always. All the best in your journey!
