  1. I’ve had no trouble keeping clear or full liquids down, and I’m tolerating nonfat Greek yogurt, jello, and V8. I actually consumed almost 600 calories today with no discomfort, and I’m starting to feel hungry again, which worries me...

    JULY SLEEVERS

Hi, that is wonderful! You are doing great! I had my sleeve July 8th. I am on the regular bariatric diet / no restrictions. I don’t have any problems eating or drinking. Sometimes it is har dot get all the fluids if I forget to keep drinking. I stalled from weeks 3 and 4 (I only lost 4lbs those weeks) which the nurse practitioner said was normal and some even gain a pound or two. I was told I should lose between 8 and 10lbs a month and that’s about where I am at. I really feel normal for the most part and sometimes forget I had the surgery. I do eat mostly protein, the triple net zero Oiko’s Greek yogurt and I also have a premier protein shake a day. I also mix in protein powder in my crystal light. I weigh myself constantly too which I shouldn’t. Lol

    5'7ft 130 pounds, starting at 280 pounds.

My surgeon said 65% excess weight would be lost if you do nothing. No exercise. So, I exercise my ass off. I work out 5 times per week. I push myself out of my comfort zone routinely. I hired a trainer, I do spin classes, I do yoga, I go hiking, I am constantly looking for ways to sweat. I added in several athletic performance supplements to my diet. I also follow an extremely strict diet; much more strict than is "necessary" for bariatric patients. However, I also get sick VERY easily so it's a mixture of me purposely being strict and me just getting really ill from basic foods. I do not eat complex carbs at all. I do not eat sugars (except naturally occurring). I do not really eat any fruit. I buy everything reduced fat, low sugar. I eat well under 40g of carbs a day and always hit at least 90g of protein. I typically stick to BariatricPal Lite Entrees for lunch during the work week. I eat the same thing almost every day of the work weeks. Yogurt, jerky stick, BP meal, light snack, cottage cheese or turkey patty. I take a ton of vitamins - about 15 different ones. I convince myself that if eat the wrong foods it will cause dumping so I never even put it in my mouth to try it. And it probably will cause dumping for me because virtually everything makes me ill. I consider this a positive, however. I look at food as a chore necessary to live now. I was never given a goal weight. I arbitrarily picked mine. I compared myself big time to others in the beginning; it was really depressing. Once you FEEL good... you're there.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

On the food topic, I personally stayed away from sugar up until a couple weeks ago (aside from yogurt in the morning). I was scared to try anything with a large amount of sugar for 2 reasons... 1, I would have dumping syndrome, 2, I wouldn't and that could be a slippery slope. Needless to say I was out at an event and they had ice cream there and I since I was heading home I decided to have a small chocolate cone. I had no issues. Slippery slope here we come, I was out at another event and they had baked goods and I thought, hey I had the ice cream I can have a few of these too, so I bought them and brought them to a friends to share with her. I didn't have that much but I was in a world of hurt not long after, so sick, no dumping. I had to leave her place and rush home, thinking I would have to pull over at any time and another weird thing is I was yawning a lot. By the time I got home I had to lay down with a cold cloth on my head and just breathe until it passed which was about 45 mins or so. So now I am back to being scared of sugar which is probably for the best.

    Trader Joe’s favorites!

I posted this list a while back ago: They have tons of hummus and an eggplant dip that is basically baba ghanoush, (and is low cal) Their Kettle Cooked Chicken Soup tastes homemade, but has significant chunks of chicken in it. It's in the refridgerated section near the premade wraps, fresh pasta etc. Check the date, it's always super short coded near me Their Plain Greek Yogurt 0% Fat, in a 32 oz container (blue) is really high protein. Downside it tastes really really yogurt-y. They have individual size flavored yogurts that are similar to Oikos triple zero I like their Soy Ginger Cod in the frozen section & their Argentinian Red Shrimp Love their Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper Soup, in an aseptic box. Other soups in that area are good too, like Chicken and Wild Rice and Split Pea (Miso in the box is terrible). Lots of people love the butternut squash, but I find it a little sweet. For a sweet treat, their Latte Bars are only 40 cals, in the ice cream section. Frozen Gyoza, chicken and pork aren't too bad calorie wise, and hit the spot for an asian craving. Chicken Cilantro mini wontons are also delicious (doesn't really taste like cilantro though) Frozen meal of Fish Korma and Chicken Tikka are at or near restaurant quality. Not bad if you don't eat the rice. Their Traditional Marinara sauce is the lowest cal I've seen, tastes great. Turkey Meatballs are good. (Frozen) Egg white protein powder is a good flavorless mix in, but doesn't blend great Green Godness salad dressing in the refrigerated section near the bagged salad is good Precooked steamed beets are good. (near salad mixes) Jarred pickled beets are good (might be seasonal) They have interesting, well priced season grinders or shakers with the spices to jazz up our sometime unexciting food Mahi Burgers and Lime Chili Chicken burgers. low cal and high protein, good to eat on their own. That have lots of varieties of chicken & turkey sausage
  6. Today Breakfast 1 egg, 3 slices of bacon, and 1 package of grits. I was too full and could not drink for 2 hours. Lunch cantaloupe and cottage cheese Snack Chobani key lime yogurt Dinner will be Tyson chicken fried steak patty baked, mashed potato 1/4 cup , and peas. Like before I wont be able to eat all my dinner and will save for later tonight. Calories hit around 1200

    Protein shakes

I would probably prefer to pour the ready to drink shake into my blender & add a cup of greek lowfat yogurt to thicken it a bit.
  8. I think if it isn't too inconvenient for your to take the time to post this, that THIS type of information is completely vital and useful to vets, sophomores, and newbies alike! Cuz we can "see" what someone is eating at X point in their life post surgery. That is so vital to make sure we're on track! I am gonna continue posting my quantities cuz I do it anyway and record it in MFP, so maybe it will help someone see that you can "usually" eat in a controlled manner and still get TONS of healthy nutritious food. But not everyone does that normally (tracks) and that's OK too. We want EVERYBODY here, even if they don't weigh/measure and only say things like: b-protein coffee msnack - Oikos cherry yogurt l-tuna sandwich (1/2) snack - gs apple + peanut butter d-don't know yet Just my opinion!!!!
  9. I bought unflavored protein powder and add it to soups, yogurt, purées. That had been helping tremendously in trying to achieve my daily goals. I went to GNC and bought Genepro. They were very nice and helpful to find the right protein that would work for me.
  10. Today I am having Breakfast 1 egg scrambled and 2 or 3 slices of bacon Lunch 3 oz stuffed pork chop and asparagus ( last night leftovers ) Dinner teriyaki chicken with rice ( 3 oz chicken, 1/4 cup rice, 3 to 4 pineapple chunks ) If I have a snack it will be Chobani key lime yogurt and/or almonds. If I cant finish a meal ( which happens a lot still ) I go back and finish it later. Totaling everything up with the yogurt I am hitting 841 calories. 72 carbs 29 fat 71 protein . Sure does seem like this should be more than 841 calories and this is why I quit tracking. I would make sure I was getting in 1200 to 1500 calories and my weight would stay 10 to 15 pounds heavier then I am now when I tracked. I quit tracking this past Christmas and I still get my protein, so I happy.

    Travel during purée stage

Things to have with you: cottage cheese, yogurts, soft cheese, broth cubes, eggs (microwaved eggs are easy and quick!) Eating out: Hummus plates minus the pitas etc (if allowed) always eggs (if tolerated), yogurt, smooth soups, etc. Take a strong look at you plan then double check by calling you NUT/Team to see exactly all the variation of foods you can nave at thos stage tell them you are traveling for work and NEED suggestions. Good Luck 💜
  12. 3oz Greek yogurt with a squirt of sugar free vanilla Torani syrup. It was damn delicious!

    Starting Purees today!

Until you have your poopy stuff figured out...stay far far far away from cheese! Seriously. I just sauted them gently in a pan with a TINY bit of olive oil. Kept them wet but above 165degrees for safty. Took them out and ate them. You can add a spoon of Greek yogurt or sour cream at the end to keep them moist. Add nutritional yeast for a cheese flavor.
  14. Ok, well, that slight slope down is way easier to arrest than the more aggressive losses you were experiencing!!! So I think your fluctuations are working right? Don't you feel good about your success? You are winning maintenance and working out!!! And on no bathroom joy in 4 days. I have a much lower tolerance for potty shenanigans. If the trains aren't running on schedule, they have 48hours to correct themselves before I call MOM. And ha! I woke up thinking that maybe I need to have some chia in yogurt to break my fast and "bust a move." LOL!!! I am also doing psyllium husks again each day and Mag Citrate vitamins along with a colace. But so far I haven't involved Miralax. So you and I may be throne divas today!

    Is this normal?

It gets better. And it's normal to have food fantasies (head hunger and cravings) as well as mood swings (sadness, depression, anger, snapping, regret, euphoria). So many moods coming from surgical recovery as well as the hormones being released from the fat. If you are not hungry, then the surgery is doing it's job. That's the beauty of the honeymoon period. Embrace it! But, do what is YOUR responsibility to get the protein in at whatever stage--especially the early stage. Don't get tricky, don't try to game the system. Just eat "boring" and bland and highly nutritious foods and geterdone. Just get your protein in each day and be done. If you are gagging on the protein drinks--try another brand. Mix it up! Try diluting it in decaff black coffee or decaff black tea. Vary the temperatures of your protein and liquids to see which hits your stomach easier. Thin out yogurt (Greek plain zero fat) wtih protein drinks. Get the clear protein drinks and dilute with bottled water--drink it hot, room temp, or ice cold depending which goes down easiest. By diluting your proteins, you are thinning them down so that's easier on your new healing tool and also making them less sweet. I LOVE the Premier Protein Fruit Punch Clear (15g per bottle) and I dilute it 50/50 with bottled water. So good--like Hawaiian Punch. I add protein to things like peanut butter powder added to Greek yogurt and add 2 ounces of Premier Protein drink to make it into a yogurt soup so it goes down easy. Eat cottage cheese with canned fruit. Eat protein puddings, soft scrambled eggs, egg/tuna/salmon/chicken salads that use canned meat, hardboiled egg, and low fat cottage cheese in place of the mayonnaise. Add a little pickle juice and spices like onion powder and garlic powder and salt. Eat creamed soups and add a scoop of unflavored protein to it while it's cold, then dilute it with Fairlife Milk to up the protein content of the food. Then warm only the portion that you're gonna eat at that meal. It will all add up quickly!!! Add unflavored protein powder to every thing!!! Don't get tricky with your puree stage. Advance food slowly. Be patient. Embrace the suck. Cuz this is where you will lose the MOST weight!!!

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

I’m still frustrated. I’ve been working at increasing calories to 1000 to slow down the weight loss. I’m adding nuts and peanut butter since I can’t eat a lot volume wise. I tired half a protein bar. I felt fine but the past few days I have been having more BMs and dropped another pound. I’m thinking maybe it’s the increased fats? Any suggestions for slider foods that are higher calorie. I’m eating a ton of 4% yogurt, milk etc. at this point I’m tempted to purée meat to drink 🤢
  17. On the liquid diet? My weight center (MGH) allows broth, 1% or skim milk, tomato soup (no chunks), and low/no sugar high protein greek yogurts. And of course clear liquid options like sf popsicles and jello. But from what I see, diets tend to vary, so definitely refer to what your doctor gave you!

    Full liquid diet

It does suck. It reminds me of having a newborn baby. So relentless, where you barely finish and have to start again. Plus, I dislike artificial sweeteners so I find the liquid part even worse, because the protein shakes are so blech. My liquid diet allows me to eat high protein, low sugar greek yogurt though, which I think makes a difference. I also find that Syntrax's decaf cappuccino flavor does a lot to kill the bad taste of the protein shake, so I start with that in the am. In the afternoon I find Syntrax cookies and cream pretty bearable. Then in the evening I "treat" myself to chicken broth as my clear liquid and an Icelandic yogurt as my protein, and it feels quite normal getting to eat with a spoon. (Plus the hot soup feels pretty good on my stomach.) Add 20-25 more ounces of water/clear liquid and it all evens out. I just hope by the time soft foods come around I'll be able to swallow without feeling gas pains. 😃 Good luck!
  19. Forgive me if this has been answered 100 times. I looked through a few months of posts but didn't see it. I had VS surgery on 7/31 and everything went smoothly. I've been able to get in all my walks, my incisions are good and generally I feel comfortable. I am a tad constipated but things ARE moving. I am on Prilosec and tylenol. My issue is that I seem to be experiencing a sort of "call and response" pain in my stomach after each sip or swallow of water/protein drink/yogurt. It gets worse later in the day and makes the chore of getting enough liquid much more tedious. I think it might be a gas pain, though it manifests like sort of a strong hunger pang. Sometimes there's a burp, but many times not. My question is, is this par for the course? And if so, will it pass and when? Thanks for any insight you might have!
  20. Antibiotics and hunger? I hade to eat so much but my scale is creeping down about pound. Nuts and jerky live in my desk. - 10 minutes to use lavatory, eat and write notes means these things happen at once - well not quite but I can not imagine the flip from getting off at essentially midnight and being back 6 hours later. Lack of sleep equals carb cravings and being grumpy. Yes to black pepper with cottage cheese - I officially eat 2 of your guys days - Aug 6: 4:00 1 c nonfat yogurt with raspberries 190 cal, 8:00 Blacold brew with almond milk 80 cal, 10:00 isopure drink 160 cal, 3:00 3 oz chicken, green salad and lemon juice 280 cal, 8:00 protein bar 180 cal. -890 cal 110 G protein

  22. 5"4" 👵 17m PO (WLM) 135.4lbs (pre-poopy)=lol knew it would go back up again. LOL. GHDWL (Groundhog Day Weight Loss = gaining and losing the same 2 lbs over and over and over again every day...) I'd intended to do an 18:6 IF with 500 cal VLCD, but just couldn't do it. Interestingly someone posted an article about the use of antibiotics and weight gain/increased hunger. And with this surgery last month for my twisted gut, I had massive amounts of IV antibiotics. I'm back to my pre-surg weight and the scale isn't budging. And I'm incredibly hungry every day. And I'm letting that hunger dictate horrible choices that just fuel more hunger (hello roasted potatoes I'm talking about YOU there! Gah. LOL. Crazy much?) This would be considered an "UP" day for me, but not a feast day. Feast days are on weekends (usually a Saturday) and are more likely 1200-1400 cals.

    Pangs

I was/am having the same issue ever since my surgery in April. (Mine also had gnawing pain with nausea every time I ate). I was consuming small parts of protein shakes every 3-4 hrs because it settled down and felt better, not eating anything but greek yogurt as well. It would not go away. My surgeon recently did an upper endoscopy which showed diffuse gastritis. I also had biopsies taken for H pyLori still awaiting results. Mention this issue to your team if it continues. Good Luck!
  24. I take my calcium supplement in the morning around the same time as I am eating breakfast, which is usually a yogurt or a soy protein shake. I take my evening supplements right after dinner. How much your body absorbs is different for everyone. Like the other poster said, you will just expel whatever your body doesn't need so taking it with food is fine.
  25. Yikes!! So we can only absorb 500mg at a time so do you take the calcium pills or chews separate from protein shakes or yogurt?
