    Stalled at 6 weeks

    If you have searched many of the past posts you will note that stalls are common. Weight loss is not linear and stalls, plateaus will happen even at this early stage. I've stalled 3 times and I'm just 2 weeks behind you in surgery. You have to ensure you are meeting your protein and water goals first, eating three tiny meals is probably not enough and your body could've gone into starvation mode. Are you tracking your intake, can you give us an example of what your day looks like? There is no way to "jump start" the weight loss again, just keep following your program and it will take off on it's own.

    Fighting with my head today

    I am having some crazy head hunger today. I haven't had too much since surgery 5 weeks ago but today it is getting to me. I haven't given in, nor will I (I'm more hard headed than that) but boy am I craving some carbs/sugar today. I finally broke my almost three week stall and it is great to see the scale going back down. I've been doing really good on my diet, lots of protein, super low carbs, lots of fluids. So where the heck is this coming from??? Of course the donuts and banana nut muffins sitting on the counter outside my office aren't helping anything. I ate my tuna salad for lunch and I am not hungry but my mouth wants to have the munchies bad. Not much longer and I'll start on another bottle of water, maybe that will help...
  3. You will be so amazed! It's incredible. Be patient with stalls. I've had three or four. On Monday I still had 4 pounds to lose to hit Onederland and I stalled all week. Then boom! I lost two pounds yesterday and two pounds today!
  4. My experience was that it eventually moved. I stalled for over a month at about three weeks after surgery. I stuck to exercising and eating as recommended. Eventually the weight started coming off - 12 lbs in the past 2 weeks. I feel better knowing I always stuck with my plan, and it finally paid off! Keep at it!

I was within a pound of my original goal at six months, which was to be down about 92lb before I lowered it another 10lb to better match where by body composition was going, but I wasn't focusing on any particular time target. I can't offer any particular tips as this is just how it worked for me and I did all the wrong things (except exercise - that was a constant) according to the no-carb evangelists. The best way to get to goal quickly is to start closer to it and according to popular perception, have a Y chromosome (guys seem to lose quicker than gals, though I suspect that has more to do with higher average "should be" weights driving higher ending metabolic rates.) The exercise is a major part of it, and seems to be common in most who have been successful long term - I suspect that building/maintaining a higher metabolic rate thru the exercise, particularly strength/resistance training to build/maintain muscle mass, is more valuable than a very low caloric intake, and certainly is long term for weight maintenance according to the consensus of studies on the topic. You shouldn't expect to lose weight consistently, as the loss gets harder as time goes on - your caloric deficit shrinks as your metabolic rate drops some with the loss, and most particularly, your exercise burns less as you are moving less weight around. Typically, you would expect to see declining loss numbers as you proceed, and some will be more or less consistent on this depending upon stalls and the like. I lost at a fairly smoothly declining rate - 33 the first month (when we all typically have our largest drop due to the adjustments our bodies are making) followed by a couple months at 14-15 down, then three months at 10 down and the seventh into the goal range was down 9. This past month since then I've only lost a couple of pounds, but more importantly to me is that my body composition has continued to move in the right direction, dropping around another 3% in body fat down into the mid teens (mid-normal range for men). I never had any stalls of note (only one week in the middle where I didn't lose anything) which I suspect may be from not going too far into starvation mode from being ultra low cal/carb. Philosophically, I would rather lose what I need to lose over 18 months rather than 6 months, if there were some way of being assured that I would actually lose it all - rapid weight loss isn't the healthiest condition for our bodies, but it's something that we put up with to make sure we lose it this time. Post-op, I quickly settled into a 900-1000 calorie per day routine as something that was comfortable that satisfied and provided requisite Protein along with enough for some additional essential nutrition - some fruits and veg in there, and some complex carb added later to help fuel some workouts as intensity increased. Seeing that my loss rate was reasonable, I made no effort to drop my intake to the 6-800 cal levels that some docs advise, but did let it rise slowly over time into the 1000-1100 range as I worked to add nutrition. I generally have focused more on proper diet leading toward long term weight maintenance habits, but consistent with continuing the loss to goal, than in speeding toward that goal - for many, if not most, of us VSGers, long term weight maintenance will be a bigger challenge than the loss itself.

    How much can you eat?

    I am six months out and I think I am eating right. Just getting a little harder. I hope I did'nt stretch my sleeve . I basically used the portion plate for dinner. I have been having some bread which is probably a no no. I have one protein pre made shake a day or protein bar. I also started snacking at night on popcorn. Trying but have weight stall the last three weeks. So far I have lost 66 pounds from 251 to 185.9. I have ten more pounds to reach goal at 175 I am six foot one

    It's Over!

    My dreaded three week stall that is. I actually stalled at about two weeks, and it held until just past four weeks. Last Tuesday was my one month check and I was 270lbs. I am very lucky that my home scales and my surgeons scales weigh the same. (I was 270lbs at home too) As of this morning I am 264lbs. And my other major milestone was I hit my 50lb mark over the weekend. Since this all began I have lost (now) over 50lbs. I still have a long way to go to hit my goal, but this is the single biggest weight loss I have ever had in all the years I have been obese. It is such an awesome feeling. It is inspiring me to keep on keeping on! ( esp. after the stall) And part of that weight loss I did on my own, before the sleeve. I knew my life was about to change and I couldn't wait to get at it. I do have a lot to be thankful for this week, I finally see a brighter future.

    1st week weight loss

    Everyone is different! Lots of things in play. Did you do a pre op diet? If you lost weight pre op your first week post op won't be a high because you already lost the big Water weight drop people often lose the first week of any diet. I lost an amazing amount my first week (17lbs) but I didn't have a pre op diet, even so my doc said at my one week follow up not to trust that loss and not to stress if it went up. It didn't, but I hit the "three week stall" right after at two weeks while my body caught up. It's a marathon, not a sprint!

    Hows your weight loss coming along?

    I hit a stall for two weeks but was still taking off inches. I was advices on here to eat every three hours. I was getting 700 to 800 calories and that bumped me to 1000. The scal started moving again the second day I did this!
  10. Hi Bruff: I am happy to report that my 3rd week stall ended after five days and with a three pound loss. I realize that other people choose not to weigh daily, but I DO keep the weight loss in perspective and thanks to all the VST posters who helped me understand that a 3rd week stall is not the end of my "window of opportunity for weight loss" but is normal for many of us. I am still weighing daily--but I do not get too discouraged if I have only lost 4-5 oz or even nothing at all. I feel so much better than I did a month ago (tomorrow will be one full month since my surgery). I have lost 25 lbs, lost 5 inches from my waist, and 5 1/2 inches from my chest. ( those are the only area I re-measured today). This puts me with 1/4 of desired weight loss goal, and it puts below 200 lbs ( I haven't been under 200 lbs in 6 years ). I am 5'4" so I want to lose 75 lbs more to reach my goal weight of 122 lbs, which will put me around a 20.5 BMI-- a healthy, and fit weight for me. So from my recent experience, I say Bruff--hang in there--keep up the healthy eating and exercise and your scale will start to move down once again. I have confidence! Sent from my iPad using VST
  11. I've been really lucky and only had a really hard emotional time for about two days about a week and a half post op. I believe I'm smack in the middle of the dreaded 3week stall. I'm so grateful that, although everyone gets sick of hearing about it, everyone still posts about it. I feel like it's just par for the course thanks to this app. I'm sure this has been posted before but can some of you share some stats? What I'd like to see is; how many calories consumed daily at about 3, 4, 6.. etc. weeks out... how many lbs lost per week at same intervals... how long did your three week stall last? ** also wondering ig October sleevers want to share MFP user names?     A great Start

    Great job on the weight loss. Yes it will slow. I did the same thing. I had 54 total to lose and lost 30 by week 7 and I'm at goal at month 9. The first loss was fast and after month three it was stalls and slow but steady. Maybe one pound or a little more a week. All my labs have been great. I keep up with Protein intake first and foremost and Vitamins. I make sure I'm hydrated and then enjoy the rest of my food selections for the day. I have worked out very little because of my migraines so I am going to start strength training to firm up and see where my body wants my weight to be. Even though you have more to lose, if you work your program, you could be at goal within year one and then some. It's all about you and what you do for yourself. You sound like you're doing it all right so far. Keep it up.

    Gained 5 lbs overnight

    Please stay off the scale. This is a different process than what we were all taught pre-op. You are still recovering from major surgery and need time to heal. You are swollen and full of fluids. Your primary focus post-op is getting enough nutrition to heal and to keep your metabolism functioning. Follow your program. Focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids. Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed. Exercise. Moderately until you can get enough nutrition and are cleared for more strenuous exercise. Weigh less often. We do not lose weight at a constant rate. We all experience periodic stalls and most of us have our first one about three weeks after surgery.   14. I sometimes take tiny sips with meals because my mouth gets dry very easily (even when I'm past my Fluid goal!), and I drink with a straw because it's easier to take in less air for me. I'm following everything else (calories, Protein, etc). Eating for twenty minutes and then sitting an hour after a meal with no liquid at all makes my throat too dry and gives me a hacking cough that turns into heaving, so it was a choice I had to make. I decided I had to do what I needed to do in order to prevent myself from getting to that down point. I'm losing weight, not as fast as I'd like (also hitting that three week stall), but I'm doing good, I think. Meeting goals, dropping weight, and losing inches with ease.

    Weight loss and liquids

    As far as I am concerned, the numbers on the scale are pretty irrelevant until you can reliably get in your protein and fluids every day. Getting enough protein and fluids is critical for healing and for weight loss. That said, none of us lose at a constant or steady rate. We all experience stalls and slow downs and almost everyone has a stall about three weeks after surgery. Weight gain in the first week of surgery is usually because of the IV fluids and swelling (you did just have major surgery). Just follow your program. Focus on getting in at least 64 oz of Fluid and reaching your protein target. Take your Vitamins and supplements as instructed. Exercise when cleared. Stay off the scale.   17. Ok so I had the infamous three week stall... But I got over it. And when I get my period I dont lose as much But I have been stalled for like 2 weeks now and I don't have my period. I think my problem is not enough exercise and not being able to resist temptation as well I am almost five months out and down 110 pounds... But I still weigh 262!! Far from goal Any suggestions? Anyone wanna give me a swift kick in the behind? I feel like I should know the answer but can not enough Protein slow your weight loss? I prob get about 30 grams a day... I know... Bad

    Week 2 and no weight loss

    Weight Loss is never consistent. I have never heard the pound a day for three months theory before. Today marks 8 weeks out for me and I've lost 40 lbs. there will be stalls and times of rapid loss. Just sick to what your dr and nut have directed you to do and you will do fine.

    What have I done to myself?

    First off, take the word "only" out of your vocabulary. When was the last time you lost 25 lbs in four weeks? That's more than five pounds a week! That is awesome. Track every gram of protein, every bite. And hydrate. I have had two major stalls since my surgery in August. Both times, for whatever weird reason, they lasted for 9 days each. Then I lost like two or three pounds overnight. Don't be discouraged. As long as you are following plan it will come off.
  20. my sister and i went to tj to do the surgery with dr Cabrera at mi doctor...my sister needs to lose 60 lbs and i 40-50.... it went well....some gas pain and also pain at some of the surgery sites.... we both lost 10 pounds in the first 10 days then stalled for a week....today is 4 weeks after surgery and we both lost approx 15-16 pounds....i have not been drinking Protein drinks as they make me gag....my sister did for a few days only....instead i drank chicken broth buttermilk, kefir coconut Water and ate some eggsalad....cannot get more than 3-4 cups of water down a day....its difficult especially now that its cold....i should drink tea with a bit of agave nectar to sweeten....but havent done that either....i started with puree within a week after surgery and tried some soft foods thereafter....i go by what feels ok....i have had some heartburn....but i find if i dont eat late and dont lie down soon after eating i dont get the heartburn..... my biggest issue is the weight loss....i know 15 pounds a month is not bad but i truly thought i would lose more...maybe about 20 the first month.....my sister is also disappointed....we both lose .5 of a pound every other or third day....we stall often for a few days or a week.....so in three weeks we lost 5 and 6 pounds.....thats way too little....hopefully it will pick up....i will try to drink more and exercise more.....
  21. I'm three weeks out and my NUT told me not to be surprised if I hit a stall about this time. Therefore, I'm not getting on the scale until next Friday. Do a search on this forum for Three Week Stall and you'll see other posts about this. They can last a week or two apparently.

    A Cup Of Soup? :(

    Yes, a cup of liquid (not necessarily puree or cream soups) anything goes down easily. I remember in the hospital when they brought my first meal: good size bowl of broth, small juice, popsicle, Jello cup and I was thinking what on earth am I supposed to do with all this? All I'd ever heard was sip, sip, sip and don't ever take in more than 1oz at a time. Boy was I in for a surprise when the nurses were really irritated with me for not eating it all and not drinking the huge pitcher of ice Water they kept refilling! At home on Clear Liquids I'd usually fix myself a 16oz bowl of broth and sip it down slowly but I didn't have any trouble taking it in. I had a stall in week three. It was also time for my period and every month, things seem to stop a week and a half before I get my period, then I start and drop 2-4 lbs over night and start inching down again from there.
  23. Another slow loser here. I am now just under four months post sleeve. The funny thing is though, when I look at the whole big picture of my weight loss I am AMAZED!!!! I started at 203lbs and am down to 162lbs. I recently had a three week stall but things got moving again scale wise a week ago. However, during the stall, my body obviously had a good old sort out and my shape changed and unneeded inches left various parts of my anatomy. I didn't have a say in any of the design ideas at all and just kept walking the dogs and getting my exercise. I'm back wearing jeans again and I threw out all my tracksuit pants the other day. I'm loving this journey and accept that as the weight crept on then it's OK if it creeps off. Keep reading the posts on this site and you won't go far wrong. We're all on the same journey.

    Stall

    Not exercising can certainly be a factor in why you are not losing. But so could a lot of things. some you can control and others that you can not. First verify you are getting in enough calories, Water and Protein, other wise you will not lose. Exercise certainly helps, but even with exercise without those three you will stall. Stalls also happen for no real reason other than your body needs to adjust to your new weight etc. Make sure you are measuring your body, for the 3 weeks I was in a stall I saw the inches dropping but not the weight. Whenever I stall I up my protein and within a couple days my weight tends to start dropping. It took that 3 week stall for me to figure that out. I was eating 300-400 calories a day and 50 g of protein. Now I eat 700-800 calories a day and 75g plus of protein a day. Without enough calories and protein your body will eat your muscles not the fat and the weight stalls. Dont forget your Vitamins as well. Be patient with yourself this is a long process (marathon) and not a short race. Follow the rules and you will lose that weight, but follow the rules. Do not become complacent. In the beginning it is harder (10 weeks post op and it is still hard many days) but it gets better. Remember being stationary and eating the wrong foods is what brought us here in the first place.     Stand still

    I'm just ending a three week stall. I think part of it was because I stopped measuring some of my foods, like nuts and fruits, and I think I was getting more calories than I was recording. I'm learning that just because it is healthy doesn't mean you can eat as much as you want. Peanut butter is another really good example of healthy but too calorie dense.
