  1. Hello All, I had the lap band put in five years ago, and it hasn't been the best journey. I've had two revisions due to the band being punctured at fills, one in which it snapped and was poking me all over inside. We've never been able to find the sweet spot...it's either no restriction or so tight I can't get good Protein down. So in the past 5 months or so I have had unexplained swelling in my feet, ankles and calves. My regular physcian says it's due to sitting at work. Long story short, I had my band released a little bit (like .5 cc) and it was so loose that I had no restriction. She put more in, no restriction filled it back to where it was too tight at one point and still no restriction. I am now scheduled for an endoscopy to see if I have band erosion. Honestly, I feel like my body is rejecting the band. I'm holding Fluid everywhere...my belly feels like I have a bowling ball in it, my shoulders ache and my chiropractor today confirmed that he can tell my body has changed..he said my body is much tighter indicating to him I am full of fluids. My body hurts, my feet, ankles and knees are the worst...I can hardly stand to walk. I can't get comfortable when I try to sleep So I am wondering, have any of you been through this, and if you have, what did you do to help yourself? I cut out as much sodium in my diet to see if that was an issue, but it hasn't made a difference. TIA!
  2. I know I have read and even posted about the stalls...but I am becoming depressed. I lost 20ish pounds and even endured a 2nd week stall but I am going up on the scale these last few weeks. I am struggling with eating soft foods so I backed up and went back to runny, liquid and/or mushy foods. Doing better eating but still very depressed when looking at the weight itself. I walk several miles a day and eat my Protein...I also drink my Water. I am not eating any sugary foods, no sweets (can't with the sugar dump I get right away) and hardly any carbs. Last weds I weighed 179, this week I weigh 182 :-( I just want all these issues I am having to seem worthwhile. Eating difficulties, pain, small portions etc. TIA everyone...for letting me vent. J
  3. You are not alone! I have been hungry since about a week out from surgery, and it's the smells from making food for my kids and husband that get me the worst! But we knew this would happen, and it's not much different from a regular diet. It's about making the choice to say no and lose weight. Lucky for us, even if you decided to eat you would fit very, very little in your new little tummy. Not that you should, but that is the point of this surgery. Once you move to mushie stages it should help with the hunger issues. Try to stick with protein mushies. The shakes don't help with my hunger much either, but a piece of cheese, a little bit of egg, or some canned chicken with light mayo has helped me a lot with hunger. It will get better!!
  4. I've heard some people say they bring packets of protein chicken soup mix because you can make it with hot water from your coffee maker and save yourself a few bucks buying it while you're at the hotel.
  5. My surgery was on the 24th and I am still having quite a bit of gas build up. I feel fine in the morning, but as soon as I drink my Protein shake or but broth in my mouth, I start with the gas build up. By evening time I feel horrible again. I chew Gas X but really concerned how long this will last. I go back to work on Monday, and this might be quite embarrassing. I start my thicker Soups tomorrow and yogurt shakes, will this help having little bit more solid food. Also, I used to love my coffee in the morning and now I can't even stomach but a couple of sips. I have no desire to drink it. Will this feeling will go away? You know i never realized how many commercials on TV revolve around food. As I am sitting watching and hungry a food commercial comes on and It's food and I think boy will I be glad when I can have food again and it seems so far away before that time.

6 weeks out and gaining weight :(

I go up a lb or two then drop. I have gotten used to the rhythms of my weight loss so I am not alarmed...annoyed a bit, yes. Lol. If you are following the game plan...getting in protein, drinking water and limiting carbs and mixing in some physical activity...your weight can only eventually go down...good luck:)

    Just banded "Newbie"

Congratulations!!! I was just banded on 8/22. It was also a big decision for me. Although it sounds like you had more going on that I did but it was more whether I really deemed this surgery necessary. When my breathing got worse and started using my rescue inhaler 6 + times a day I knew I needed to do something. I think since surgery I've only used my inhaler a total of maybe 8 times. I am now able to do any exercises I want and can eat mushies. food doesn't seem so exciting anymore. Things look good, but when I go to eat, I can take it or leave it. Maybe after I'm on my permanent diet it will get better. I'm trying to get Protein through food instead of Protein drinks because I'm really sick of those lol but have been unsuccessful. So it look like I will be in Protein Drink hell once again. Oh well. Anyways, the best of luck to you and there is a lot of good advice from others on this site. Lisa (my name too lol)

    BEFORE SURGERY

Start trying some of the available protein shakes and powders. While your tastes may change post-surgery, it's good to at least have a starting point! I'd clean out the fridge, freezer and pantry if you can - get rid of junk food (or if your family would pitch a fit, at least put the stuff where you would have to think about it to get it!).
  9. To be honest i would talk to your Surgeon about the financial burden that you feel under in relation to the 'extra' costs of things like protien shakes, why do they insist on you having to buy Bariatric Advantage Protein from them.. ? Stress can be a real problem when trying to lose weight, even if you dont eat when stressed it can mess up your metabolism whereby you dont lose anything. It sounds like you are worried over a lot of things at the moment and maybe you need to consider postponing for a while or looking into getting another doctor. Having success with a band is not just about food, its about being in the right frame of mind to dedicate time and effort into getting results. Might be an idea to ask family friends for christmas presents of protien shakes. I really hope things go ok for you.
  10. So I'm 9 days out and on purées. My question is about getting my 70g Protein in. I am only allowed to have 3 meals a day but only 2-4 tbsp at a time so how can i get all that protein in. And also if I'm taking my Vitamins with my meals I'm assuming its ok to take a sip of Water to get the vitamins down. And is my Protein shake considered a meal. So i have to stop drinking water 15 mins before and resume 1hr after drinking my shake? Just wondering what everyone's doing as I don't want to mess up my new pouch. I'm suddenly feeling confused!
  11. I'll second the Costco Muscle Milk, It's OK with water and if you can afford the calories, it's better with skim milk. They have protein bars too, unfortunately they taste like chocolate covered sawdust, but they do have 20g protein. Cottage cheese is cheap and has quite a bit of protein and is pretty filling. You have to buy food anyway so just make it healthy. Grainy, wheat bread is good toasted, if you can eat it. To begin, you'll need sugar free jello, s/f Popsicles. S/f fudgesicles Costco chicken bullion, instant potatos thinned out are good for full liquids. The food section has a lot of good ideas and Google is full of liquid and solid food ideas.
  12. Unfortuantely you are in banders hell. You probably won't feel good restriction until your 2-4 fill. What you need to do at this point is to follow the doctors plan. You should measure your food because you really can keep eating if you don't. You should only eat 1/2 to 1 cup of food at each meal. Try eating foods that are higher in Protein such as chicken and fish. And of course continue your Protein shakes. You will be fine. Don't be afraid of moving through the stages. You shouldn't worry about getting stuck on the mushy stage. It should go down nice for you. Just take smaller spoon fulls. As you move up in the stages just remember to chew at least 25-30 times and cut your food to the size of an M&M. You will be fine. Don't be afraid to get stuck because it's really not that bad. As I have said before this might sound harsh but I beleive that everyone should experience the 'stuck' once in their banded life so they know how to deal with it, and it also teaches you how to chew better. Good luck to you. You will do fine.

So What Would You Tell Yourself?

The first 2-3 weeks after surgery concentrate on meeting Fluid goals not your Protein goals. Your fluids are way more important especially that 1st week after surgery. Your protein intake will improve once you are able to get your fluid goals met. You will wonder what you did to yourself and why in that first week post op. Remember you made the decision for surgery after much research and introspection. The feeling will pass, but it is disconcerting. Remember to follow your plan! Keep following the plan. Protein first always! When you are stalling, when you gain, when you are wondering if you are doing the right thing ALWAYS go back to your nutrition plan. Keep following it and everything else will come. Good luck and welcome to the loser's bench!
  14. 15. Hi All, I will be having surgery May 25th. My approval went by easily and quickly. The clinic didn't expect it to be so easy and they have drug their feet waiting for approval. I had faith that my ins would follow their policies and it would be quick. So here I am and don't know what time of day my surgery will be and feeling somewhat unprepared. I see the doctor for the pre op tomorrow and hope that will help. My husband has to work while I am in surgery. A friend will pick me up. What do you all think about that? I've never had surgery pretty much alone, but I don't have other options. Looking forward to getting this over with and moving on to the next chapter.
  16. I'm a lurker on here, reading everything so that I can be ready for the process. I went to a seminar in February, did my psych eval in late February, my nutrition counseling in March, and everything was submitted to my insurance in late March. The approval just came through yesterday! I cut out caffeine in March. My surgery is set for May 21st at 7:30 am. I had to put it off for over a month so that I can get everything set up for work so that I can be off for a few days. With the memorial day holiday the next weekend, I even get one extra day off without needing to use that day as sick leave. The worst part is that my husband absolutely needs to be at work that day, so I'm going to have my son take me. We'll probably go up the night before to stay at a hotel so that we don't have to drive as far on surgery morning. I have over a month to taste test different Protein shakes, and to get in my two support groups. Oh, and a month to stress out that I'll forget something! :scared2:

    one month away today

Happy Birthday Happy Birthday. I hope the time till surgery goes by what will seem quickly, But use this time to practice Sipping, walking ect. liquids Liquids Liquids. I tried to think like I had had the surgery and do a lot of the things I knew I would need to do. Started Vitamins.everyday. Tried different Protein drinks, Got lots of protein in because I knew it would help me be prepared for surgery. Read my signature and you will find what for me was two months instead of one, but ended up being for the best because of a ovary cyst and mass malfunction that was taken care of during surgery, 'Wishing you the very Best, And I hope your Birthday is special, I know your whole next year is going to be,
  18. My preop diet consisted of... 3 Protein shakes/day (read the labels to make sure they have 20-30g protein and no more than 5g sugar)....I could replace a shake with unflavored Protein powder mixed in broth for a break from the sweet shakes. Certain veggies in unlimited quantities (spinach, broccoli, lettuce, brussel sprouts, mushrooms, tomatoes, green beans)....I used flavored vinegar or lemon juice for dressing on the lettuce At least 64oz water/day SF Jello or SF Popsicles. ( I made my own protein pops by freezing Protein drinks in silicone molds I found on Amazon) Didn't count calories or anything. Lost 22 pounds in 16 days (and I'm 45) And Cynthia Alexander's book is great.

    pre-op diet help needed

Kaiser gives a specific pre op diet 1200 or less calories. Protein, veggies, whole grain, fruit. Protein first. Then veggies etc...They only do shakes the month prior to surgery because they want people to learn to eat healthier first. Im 41 and I can lose 2-5 a week eating under 1200 and EXERCISING...even if it's just a brisk walk but it's easier for me to do circuit weights at the gym than walkng and it builds muscle and burns more fat faster. But replacing meals with shakes you should melt off lbs. good luck. I'm trying more shakes because I'm stocking up for post op so I'm hoping to melt a few extra each week. I get my surgery date this week
  20. Email your coordinator if that who is initially gave it to you. I used Dr. Pompa also but I worked directly with their nutritionist Daniella, the one she gave me was for like 2 weeks. I talked her into letting me do a modified one that only covered around 6 days pre-op then I begged her to let me have some food the night before surgery so I could sleep with a full belly. She only let me have some Soup or salad. I had a big bowl of pintos and cheese. I fessed up and she said at least i went for Protein. LOL. I would say to ask Calgarygirl but she is already in TJ waiting for her surgery tomorrow. Not sure if she will see this before then. I am guessing it is just clear liquids if it is only for 3 days. That would be chicken broth, Water, Jello, Protein drinks, crystal light and tea.
  21. So I'm on day 4 of my pre-op diet, protein shakes only. Just today I've started getting muscle spasms...but it's in the weirdest place. It's in my right hand between my thumb and index finger. It makes my index finger involuntarily move. It's weird. Not concerning, just funny.
  22. Hi, I had my surgery on Monday, 1/26. Aside from some residual gas, I feel really great. I have zero pain, a little sore/tender around the incision sites but that's about it. I am having no difficulty in meeting my daily fluid/protein goals each day. I feel hungry and want to eat something more substantial. Has anyone had a similar situation? I'm worried....I wish I wasn't feeling this great and this hungry so soon.

    SMALL SCALE VICTORY FINALLY

Hi, I wondered where you were, hadn't seen you on here for awhile. Mind you, I have been spending most of my time reading old posts. I am so pleased you have broken your stall, I know how hard you have been working at doing everything you can to practise. I too have been trying really hard, and my 'milk' diet is beginning to pay off. It too, is really hard though, and I just wish they would allow us to add Protein to our drinks as I think I would be a lot less hungary and lose more weight. One more visit eh, not long to go now. I shall be sending positive thoughts your way in the hope everything is approved and you get your 'date' at last. Good luck and keep on 'practising'

What Are You Eating One Month Post Op?

Hi everyone !! I found something else that will satisfy your crunch need and yet melt into nothing for your pouch !!! Special K makes cracker chips, I just tried the Southwest Ranch and they are awesome.... I only ate about 10 and that was good. A serving is 27 chips for 110 calories, 2.5g fat, 1g Sugar, 2g protein. It really satisfied my crunch need !!!
