  1. So I survived my first day of my post op semi liquid diet today! Everything went great until I had Cream of Mushroom Campbell soup for lunch. I used Fairlife nonfat milk to mix it with and put a scoop of Isopure flavorless protein powder and bam sudden diahrea and I had it for hours (haven't even had the surgery yet 🤣🤣) I'm trying to figure out if it was the soup or if protein powder does this?? Any insight??
  2. I'd like to know y'all's experience with sugar alcohols/sugar substitutes. When I was in my pureed stage, my diet/menu information stated that I could eat sugar-free pudding. I had one and experienced harsh stomach pain for the entire night until the next morning. However, I recently treated myself to some plain oatmeal and added stevia packets and had no issues. I looked up the ingredients to the Jello brand sf pudding and each cup has 4g sugar alcohols. It doesn't state exactly which "itol" it has, though. Stevia (depending on how it's combined) is mostly erythritol. I'm looking for some dessert-ish foods that can satiate my sweet tooth (also trying to help my 16-yr-old daughter by replacing her regular foods with low calorie, low carb, low sugar options). When I started on my WLS journey mid-May, she became inspired and has lost 17 lbs so far! Ideas? Suggestions? Experiences?

    Worried about enough protein!

The right solid food will get you a really big serving of protein. Boiled chicken, ground turkey, and definitely fresh seafood. A little goes a long way. For example, 2 oz of chicken breast is about 90 calories, 18g protein, and 0 carbs (without breading or frying of course). Also, if you have the time, you can eat small amounts 4 or 5 times a day, rather than just 3 typical meals. At the end of the day, if you haven't reached your protein goal, use a protein shake or a protein shot (3oz = 25g protein) to hit your goal. It could take a little practice. You could also create a schedule or set reminders on your phone. Using a nutrition app helps a lot. I use Baritastic. I log what I eat/drink and it helps me see where I'm at throughout the day. You'll do great!
  4. I’m a few days away from starting the regular/chopped food stage and I’m worried about getting enough protein. So far, I’ve been hitting my goals and about 4.5 oz of purée/soft food makes me comfortably full. This has allowed me to get a decent amount of protein at each meal. I’ve heard from a lot of people that you get full way faster when eating solid food, and I’m worried that this will cause me to not be able to get all my protein in. Is this what happens? Does it get harder to get your protein in once you start eating regular food? I’m just so anxious. Any advice or anecdotes is helpful.

    Sleeping help

Talk to your team. You can also try sleep hygiene practices as a non-medication option.
  6. I am not a huge sweets person, I made it and just have it in the fridge for a little spoonful here and there. I did it with chocolate protein, and i definitely was good skipping the chips.
  7. I have sleep apnea, arthiritis, fatty liver and high cholesterol and am scared as well but I'm also scared of all of these conditions I have and developing more later in life if I don't take control of my obesity. So I have made the decision to go through with the surgery for reals this time and not cancel like twice before. All I can do now is do everything I can to help this surgery go smoothly. I'm three weeks out and am following a semi liquid diet (even though my doctors office told me it wasn't necessary because I know shrinking my liver and more weight loss before surgery is safer and better) I take all my supplements and more (with Dr approval) I make sure to get my protein in to promote faster healing and I've begun therapy/support groups. I'm going to try to take as little pain medication as possible after surgery because too many opiods and surgery dont mix. It seems like all these "celebrity deaths" (Kanye west mother, Lisa marie presleu) after surgery had opiods as a factor. I currently had been taken tylenol codeine #3 (a mild opiod) three times a day for arthiritis and that stopped today. I'm not taking any chances even with this mild one. When I have pain I will use creams or tens therapy or hell even book a massage but I am doing everything In my power to prevent complications. I've read books and gained a lot of knowledge about the surgery and have asked patients here how they've done it. That's all we can do and then leave the rest up to God/the powers that be.

    Liquids with food

It's supposed to be a rule to follow forever, however the nutritionist said the guidelines are there due to feedback from patients. Some may be able to eat before the 30min are up depending on how they feel. I can drink up to 15min before, but after I have to wait 30min to 1 hour depending on what I eat. Soup is a no no for now, I can only do a few spoonful and that makes it difficult to get my protein in.
  9. Breakfast is a protein shake with caffeine to wake me up, and I keep the half gallon canteen of cold water on my desk and drink from it all day. Ialso take my own healthy, high-protein lunch.

Will relationship go from bad to worse?

Abusers (emotional, physical or both) lacking control of their own lives, target people with low self-esteem to feed their need to feel power over another. As you lose weight and gain more self-confidence, he will feel he is losing control over you and the mental abuse will escalate. He will sabotage your journey at every turn fearing you may realize you have better options! What exactly is he bringing to "the table"? It appears you are completely supporting this man and providing a roof over his head for the meager price of cleaning and dinner on the table. A lazy man is bad enough but a lazy, abusive man is nothing more than a parasitic piece of trash. You deserve so much better.
  11. Hello teachers, How do you manage getting in fluid and protein during school hours?

    Liquids with food

I’m 4 yrs out & I can’t drink & eat at the same time & neither can my friend at 3 yrs out (we were actually chatting about this on the weekend). Neither of us have to wait the full 30 minutes. Like on a good day we only need to wait a couple of minutes before & after if we sip slowly. Sometimes it just depends on what we’re eating or drinking. Like drinking champagne we have to wait longer. I can sip tea with a snack if I leave a couple of minutes between sips & bites. You’ll work out what you’re able to tolerate with trial & error in time too. Even though fluid goes through your tummy quickly it’s not quickly enough not to restrict/reduce how much food you can eat. Getting your protein & nutrients in is most important. You’ll still meet your fluid goals by waiting your 30 minutes. Sip all day. Establish habits & routines to help. I even drink while I’m driving: at every stop light or whilst driving (considering traffic safety of course), Take water with you & drink while you walk don’t wait for after. I drink throughout the night too (whenever I wake or get up to pee). You’ll work out what you’re able to tolerate with trial & error.

I stopped losing weight after VSG

I can understand that to be frustrating. Just brainstorming thoughts... What types of foods are you eating? For example, sticking to low fat/sugar/carb and high protein. What about drinks? Low to no calorie. Physical activity? Cardio and strength training. What about medications? Too much sodium? Water weight? Are you still tracking your food and fluids? Has your team done blood work lately? What does the nutritionist say? Another way to measure progress is by measuring different areas of your body versus just the scale. Maybe you're losing inches instead of pounds. How about the way you feel or activities you can now do. Hopefully, you and your team can figure out what is going on.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

It’s probably a mix of needing more of everything. More protein, more calories, more carbs, more electrolytes.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

@sleevedinthe817 yea I had family in town for 2 weeks and they just left. Idk what it is but I hope this feeling goes away. Do we need more protein like what gives us energy? It’s all still worth it tho I just wish I could skip to the 6 months post op lol.

    Food Aversions After Surgery

You're crazy, lol. But seriously, though. Too much protein will put a strain on you liver, gall bladder, and kidneys. According to what I've read, the amount of protein a person needs before surgery depends on your gender, age, and weight. After surgery, it will depend on if you're absorbing everything you eat, or if you have a malabsorptive surgery. Protein intake for bariatric patients, pre or post op is meant to replace the protein we lose with weight loss.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

I had my VSG on June 19th, so I am almost 30 days out. Is anyone else having struggles in the mornings, with weakness or dizziness? I get all my protein and liquids in every day.

    Food Aversions After Surgery

They did suggest that particular brand of protein shakes, but the unflavored protein powder was my idea. They did give me literature to explain each eating stage that also had suggested menus. They did not give me explicit instructions on exact nutrition information such as calories, carbs, and fiber. But I'm a 14-year veteran of a sleeve gastrectomy. There are a lot of things that I figured out by trial and error (like losing my gall bladder 2 years after getting sleeved due to TOO MUCH protein) that have really helped me this time around.

I was that way preop! I got a variety pack of Premier on Amazon and Fairlife 26g protein in chocolate and that made a huge difference! Changing up flavors helped!

I'm assuming I won't be able to eat a lot right away so I'll be drinking shakes into my soft food phase (the 25th) and beyond for awhile. Especially when I go back to work. I don't want to try a soft food only to end up in the bathroom because my body didn't like it. I have a coworker who is a couple years post op and keeps shakes at work just to make sure she's getting her protein. That's my plan, anyway. 🙂
  23. This is the yogurt I’m in love with. For a while I wasn’t able to eat yogurt without my stomach hurting. This one does just fine!! It’s Coconut Protein Yogurt. 25grams of protein /3 sugars/4 fat grams/8 carbs/170 calories. I put Jumbo blueberries in this and eat this for breakfast

I bought the Isopure Whey Isolate Protein. Whey protein is more readily absorbed. I would also add it to a 1/2 cup of mashed potatoes after they cooled down a bit, so that it wouldn't be a completely valueless pureed food. 😁👍(For the 1/2 cup mash, just a half scoop which is 12.5g protein.) P.S. the caffeine protein shake worked out great!

That's a good idea to add the protein powder to broth since we need more protein, I'm going to order some today thank you 😊 do you have any brand recommendations? I haven't tried the coffee premiere protein because of the caffeine I am extremely sensitive to caffeine even before surgery I can't handle any caffeineted drinks because it gives me anxiety. I always see it at Costco and want it but I am too scared 🤣🤣 but hopefully since you loved coffee before it will be okay!
