How did you lose so much weight? How do you answer this question
omrhsn replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yeah. There is one guy who always comments on my weight loss every time we cross paths. It was fun at first but now it is annoys me. Now I tell that I've hardly lost any weight, laugh and walk away. -
How did you lose so much weight? How do you answer this question

This week we have a lot of visitors from the head office (I work in a remote site) and I've not seen some of them for quite sometime. Some even before Covid hit. I was the star of this week with everyone talking about my weight loss and all kinds of praise and encouragement. Almost everyone asked me how did I lose the weight including the big bosses from the client and the contractors. I've only told my direct boss and the company managing director about my surgery. I took time-off to do it and told everyone else that I was going on vacation. It helped that we were still working from home while I was recovering so nobody noticed any change during that period. I chose not to tell my coworkers because I didn't want the unsolicited advice and opinions some might have about the WLS and also the follow-up questions. I learned that from when I was on KETO and made the mistake of telling a few coworkers about it. Suddenly I would have people come over to talk to me about it or advising against it etc. It was too much. One guy in particular would come in a for a weekly update on how much weight did I lose etc. Outside work, only my wife, my direct family and two of my closest friends know about my WLS. They have been very supportive and helped me throughout. I've been telling people that I was on KETO, then started a low-carb diet and exercising. I even have a photo of me on my maintain bike to prove it 😂. I would love to hear how did you respond to such questions / remarks? -
Complications 11 yrs after surgery
catwoman7 replied to Mia2515's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
med absorption can definitely be an issue. I would think they could find SOME med that would work for you - you're certainly not the only person with anxiety and depression who's had weight loss surgery. I'm sorry that they don't seem to be willing to work with you on this. I'd be surprised if your heart issues are related to your bypass surgery. Plus you said you had your first heart attack before you even had the surgery. I'm thinking it's unlikely those two things are related. I wonder if the hair loss could be related to your stress. That can definitely cause hair loss for some people. -
Hello...I had gastric bypass surgery in October of 2012. Biggest mistake of my life. I got to my goal weight in 2014. I felt pretty good. All of a sudden I started waking up several times a night with severe panic attacks (I had been suffering from this prior to surgery). I was on the right meds for this and they were manageable. All of a sudden they came back with vengeance. I asked my med doc what was happening and she said she didn't know how to help me. Yes, a med provider said she couldn't help me and that the meds I were on were working before. So this shocked me and I was on the search for another doctor. Was having a real difficult time finding someone to help me. I finally found one and what a strange person he was. He was arguing with my primary doc about what meds I should be on. It went on too long. My attacks got more intense during the night. Then they began during the day. It was nonstop anxiety with depression. I joined a CBT program because I became suicidal. The psychiatrist with the program noticed right away that I had had gastric bypass. He knew immediately what was happening. My meds weren't absorbing. He put me on a liquid medication. One that made me gain weight in the first place (ugh). It took a while for the liquid med to work so I was suffering badly. It was hard handing on. CBT program was done and I had to check myself in for my depression and anxiety. They wanted to send me to the CBT program. I was like...I just finished it! Went home to suffer some more. I was losing more weight because everytime I ate, my anxiety got worse. Never will understand that and no one can explain that to me to this day. I would start shaking after I ate and anxiety is got very strong. It still happens. Months later I had a heart attack. 3 stents. I couldn't believe all this was happening. I finally found a great med provider and therapist. On a different liquid medication but my health has worsen. I have IBS so badly, lost a lot of hair. I'm taking my vitamins and protein but still losing hair. My mental state is worse then it ever was. I was handing and living with my mental health before surgery and now worse then ever. I had this surgery because I was 80 pds overweight. I had had my 1st heart attack before surgery and my primary doc said I should have the surgery. Worse decision of my life. Sorry for long story but I just want to know if anyone is having these same complications. I went back to my gastric surgeon and she said Gastric bypass doesn't affect your meds and because I had gained 8 pds back, she rudely said..."well you're absorbing something" and looked me up and down. At that point I was done with her. This has been a nightmare

Update* I finally went ahead and had my hair cut above my shoulders. The exact style isn't exactly what I wanted but I love my wavy hair. There is some small growth but I still have a way to go.

Grazing, is this normal?
Alex Brecher replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's not uncommon for some people to continue to have the habit of snacking, even after weight loss surgery. However, it's important to make sure that the snacks you choose are in line with your bariatric diet and do not sabotage your weight loss goals. You can try to determine if the snacking is related to hunger or if it's a habit or emotional response. If you feel it's the latter, you may want to consider seeking the help of a therapist or counselor to work through any underlying emotional issues. Additionally, finding new activities to occupy your time, such as exercise or hobbies, can help reduce the urge to snack. There are many ways you can document your weight loss journey after gastric sleeve surgery. Here are a few suggestions: Monthly Photos: Take a photo of yourself in the same spot and clothing every month, just like you mentioned. This will give you a visual representation of your progress and can be motivating. Journal: Keeping a journal can be helpful in tracking your thoughts, feelings, and experiences throughout your journey. You can write about your challenges, successes, and what you have learned. Food Diary: Document what you eat, how much, and how you feel after each meal. This can help you identify patterns and make changes to your diet as needed. Video Diary: Consider recording a short video each week or month to document your progress and share your story. Remember, this journey is about you and your health, and it's important to find what works best for you in terms of documenting and tracking your progress.

I had my husband take photos of me (all four sides - front, back, and each side) every month on my surgery date. I didn't wear the same clothes, though (although when I was close to goal, I did put on my "fat" clothes and had him take photos - at that point, I could put both legs in one of the legs of my "fat" jeans). I would recommend doing that (monthly photos). For one thing, once your weight loss slows down after the first couple of months, it's sometimes hard to tell from month to month that you've lost, but if you compare photos from one month to those from three or four months before, yep - big difference! Also, it's great to have photographic "evidence" of your journey! I'm really glad I did this.

Withdrawal headaches. Similar to alcohol & drug withdrawal. Your caffeine, sugar, carbs intake has been dramatically reduced as has your calorie intake. All things your body was used to relying upon. It reacts with your migraines. If your migraines were also caused by hormones, your weight loss so far could have effected your levels too. Estrogen is stored in fat. As you lose weight it’s released into your blood stream throwing everything out of whack.

February 2023 surgery dates!
Semalnar replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it was quite a journey, as I started this journey almost 10 years ago in 2012 with my old doctors and through changes with doctors, insurance and locations it took me that long. This time because my insurance was giving me a bit of a hard time with approval to get my surgery I had 18 months of diet before I got my approval and date. But then I got a bit anxious and switched my surgeon, a decision I don't regret, and got rescheduled. For my insurance they prefer 12 months with at least 6 months of consecutive weight loss. -
9/8 Surgery Date Vanderbilt - Nashville

Hey! I know this is old but anything you can tell me about your experience in Nashville would be great! Did you go through the VUMC weight loss program? -
Hello everyone, I'm 14 months post op (sleeve) and have surpassed my weight loss goal. I've noticed over the past few months that I find myself constantly eating and snacking. Now this has not affected my weight loss but it does make me worry if my grazing brings a potential to gain it all back. I snack on a variety of things but mainly natural nut trailmix with raisins or cranberries. Sometimes the occasional bag of popcorn, fruit, or jerky. Part of me thinks its a mental thing in which I have a need to be constantly chewing, but idk 🤷♂️. Has anyone else experienced this or is experiencing this?

Decreased Libido - 2 months post-op
New_me_2022 replied to smc124's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm 12 months post op and am experiencing the same thing. I was a little different in the few months post surgery in the fact that my libido did not change and my weight loss made me feel great so the desire was there. After about month 11 I noticed decreased desire and libido. I went to a specialist and after some blood work found I was borderline anemic and had decreased testosterone. Not enough to be considered "low-t" but lower than most men my age, 41. I'd encourage you to go have a full blood panel done around the 6 month mark. It may shed some light for you.. -
Calories vs. Net Calories
smc124 replied to CHRISSER27's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m stalling right now too. Trying to ignore it and push through. The nice thing about this surgery is when a stall hits we have the confidence to know if we stick to our dr’s plan for it we know something going to give and we will start losing again. Not fun when we are in one but I find it so much less stressful than weight loss stalks prior to surgery. I’m a little over two months out and also active. My team doesn’t have us focus on calories on protein and hydration though from tracking on lose it i know I am generally consuming between 600-750 total calories and burning 500 in my dedicated workout time with my active calories burned on my Apple Watch barely ever finishing under 950. I think most of the weight loss we see in these early months is more closely a result of the restriction and absence of gherlin than anything. Also important to remember caloric deficit for pounds loss is itself a very imprecise and variable. Follow the instructions of your team and you’ll be through this before you know it. -
that's about where I was at that point. there are a lot of factors that influence your rate of weight loss, most of which you have little to no control over (age, gender, metabolic rate, what % of your body weight is muscle, starting BMI, how much you lost prior to surgery, etc). The only two things you DO have a lot of control over is how closely you stick to your program and your activity level. If you do well with those, you're good - and you WILL lose weight, whether fast or slow.

Liquid diet how to taking it seriously [emoji17]
NP_WIP replied to Quetta89's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agree that the liquid diet is not for weight loss but for safety. That thought alone allowed me to do it, I did not want any complications or worse to be opened up and closed back up because of the liver size, I saw some videos on YouTube that made it easier to stick it through. I was allowed a lean dinner, maybe they can let you have that? -
BARELY any weight loss in first two weeks??
NP_WIP replied to MaameWata's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As everyone has said stick to your plan and try not to compare yourself to others. All surgeons have different plans, and you will see the most weight loss from those that were on a liquid diet for longer periods. For example, my sister had the sleeve done in April and I in November, her weight loss is higher than mine at 3 months post op even though she was 215 at the time of surgery and I was 268, but she was on liquids for a full month, pureed for 2 weeks and softs for 2 weeks. I was allowed pureed food 10 days post op. We can see how much weight someone has lost but everyone's journey is different. Know that if you do what you are supposed to be doing and put the effort in, you will lose the weight. -
February 2023 surgery dates!
SirKat replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Doing laundry and putting away clothes I realize I may not ever wear some of these again. It’s a weird feeling. I have sufficient clothes I think for the first 50 lbs of weight loss, just from prior weight loss. My clothes from when I weighed less are from almost 20 years ago. Maybe they’ll come back in style? -
Hi I'm in my pre op stage I have two weeks to my surgery date and I decided to cut off all my hair so I won't go through the hair loss. BARELY any weight loss in first two weeks??
MaameWata replied to MaameWata's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
First of all, well done on the loss! 💪🏾💪🏾 That’s amazing. I can’t tell you how much more i feel at ease after reading this. At the hospital, they did give me quite a few iv packs of water come to think of it, so I’ll continue to stick to the plan and give it time. Thank you so much! -
BARELY any weight loss in first two weeks??
catwoman7 replied to MaameWata's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
if you've been following your clinic's recommendations, then it's likely water retention from the IV fluids. That's basically salt water, and a lot of people retain that. There are some people on here who've even weighed 10 lbs more when they left the hospital than when they arrived! It can take a week or occasionally longer to work its way out of your system. stick to your plan and the weight will come off. Everyone is different due to different factors, many of which you have little to no control over (like age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic level, how much weight you lost prior to surgery, etc). The two things you DO have control over is how closely you stick to your plan and your activity level. If you do well with those, the weight will come off, whether fast or slow. also, the 20 lb loss you said you think you should have lost in the first two weeks - banish that thought. If you started out at 600+ lbs, then yes - maybe - but for us more "normal" WLS patients, losing 20 lbs in two weeks just doesn't happen. Most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first MONTH. Yes of course you will find people who've lost more or less than that the first month, but they're outliers. You're probably doing just fine. Give it more time and remember to stick to your plan! I thought i was a terribly slow loser - and I WAS a bit behind others with similar statistics (starting weight, etc), but I ended up losing over 200 lbs. -
BARELY any weight loss in first two weeks??
MaameWata posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all! I’m a new member of the group - I hope you’re all well! I had gastric sleeve surgery on 31st January 2023, after losing 13lbs on the pre-op diet. On the morning of my surgery, I weighed 281lbs. I lost no weight in the first week even though I was drinking my required water intake and having between 60-80g of protein a day. Today is two weeks post op. I’m officially allowed to move onto purées and so first thing this morning, I weighed myself and I’ve only lost 4lbs?? I try not to compare myself to others, but I’m so disheartened and even low key regret having the surgery now. I keep seeing people reporting a stone weight loss in a week, 12 lbs a week, 8 lbs the second week etc and so I assumed this would be the same for me. I’ve been very strict with my post op diet and making sure to get in at least 30 mins of movement a day. I’ve typically been consuming protein shakes, water, protein yogurt, tomato soups and the odd sugar-free/fat free children’s ice cream lolly. I feel like I’m doing something wrong, and feel like a bit of a failure. I feel like my body is actively working against me. I spoke to my bariatric nurse who just said ‘you’re still healing, give it time’, but I don’t know if it’s just an excuse. -
Since everybody is different here are my stats. I am currently a little over 1.5 years after revision to rny (gerd reasons). I am 5'3, in my 60s, no formal exercising, currently averaging around 1500 cal total calories, and weigh 107.7 lbs. I stayed about 800 cal till I got to my first basic goal weight (140 lbs). Then I upped it a little each month till my weight loss slowly leveled off. I was (and still am) slowly losing weight as I grapple with finding my maintenance calorie level. I do look at my net calories for interest but I do not go by net calories since the calories burned calculations are notoriously wrong.
