Portion size for puree stage?
Amie replied to amytug's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1/4 cup is perfect for me with things like refried beans, chili, and egg salad. I can almost get 1/2 of cottage cheese and yogurt in. It's still hard for me to tell if and when I'm full so I have to measure so I don't get that over full feeling. -
enough protein and water?
Bethzy143 replied to Josh2xh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Josh first off Congrats 2 you, and don't feel alone i am almost 9 months out and still can't finish one Protein shake a day the first few months were bad i couldn't stand the smell of the shakes i didn't start drinking them again untill almost 5 months out once i was cleared for solid foods at week 7 i then got my protein from meats, egg, cheese, yogurt etc and water did not taste the same after surgery i just didn't want it and could drink very little of it, but hang in there it gets better i promise -
I eat my plain nonfat yogurt with chopped cucumber, finely chopped dill, squeeze of lemon salt and pepper. I eat this for dinner most days.

Try adding sucralose (Splenda) and cinnamon to taste. Delicious! Are you familiar with EZ-Sweetz? It's liquid sucralose and mixes wonderfully with yogurt and everything else. It may seem kind of pricey for a small amount but a little of that stuff goes a really long way. I love it.

I had the RNY on 12-01-15
bugsy72 replied to shay_shay209's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Lisee45 You're doing great! I had my RNY on Dec 1, too. I lost some in the pre-surgery diet and all in all, i'm down 24 pounds. It's like a pound a day for me now, too. I lost more in the beginning, which makes sense. But I have a lot more to lose than you do, too.And like I said, that includes ten days pre-surgery, all the way to today. I'm still on full liquids (creamed Soups, yogurt etc) but move to pureed on Dec 23 and can start having even more choices. It's so exciting, like "Christmas!" hahahahaha... I also have had no problems with eating or drinking, so far. Good luck! -
GREAT NEW SINGLE LOCATION FOR "STALL TALK!"
tammypoc replied to LivingFree!'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was losing so slowly after surgery (only 11 pounds in 6 weeks) and I thought I was doing everything right. On my follow-up appointment I asked the doctor about it. My problem is the carbs. I was staying away from sugar and obvious carbs like bread, Pasta, crackers, etc. but I didn't realize how many carbs were in the 0 fat milk I was adding to my Protein powder, the powder itself had carbs, the cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese. When I started adding it up I guess it was a lot of % compared to the amount of calories I was taking in. I only eat about 500-600 calories a day most days but getting all the protein and fluids. I just didn't get it. I changed the Protein Powder to MaxPro, stopped snacking at all, cut out the milk and carbs. I immediately lost 4 pounds within 2 days. I have a shake for Breakfast, eat protein only for lunch and dinner, and if I do get hungry or need a snack, I make a shake. If my protein for the day is low, I have a shake to make up the difference anyway. It's only been a week but I lost more in 4 days than I did in 4 weeks before. -
Having surgery on Tuesday too!! Been on full liquids for 11 days. No veggies or meat allowed. Shakes and broth with a bit of non fat Greek yogurt.

Wisdom about the sleeve
Malaika replied to attitudefree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think either one keeps you from losing weight - I eat cheese every day and I continue to lose weight - and it doesn't bind me up as many say it does to them - when I was early out, string cheese was a lifesaver for me. I haven't been able to tolerate yogurt since surgery - it's a consistency thing for me - but Bearded eats a lot of yogurt and he's losing weight too. -
First snack attack since banded.....
btrieger replied to ELJB's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Brushing your teeth will curb the cravings also. Who wants to dirty their clean teeth. I haven't had ice cream since February and don't really miss it. A cup of fat free yogurt satisfies me just as much. I do have pudding cups and baked chips (not together) every couple of days. -
How much weight preop did low BMI'ers lose?
corpus girl posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Starting preop-diet weight was 195 & I've only got 3 more days to go...I've only lost 5 lbs! My surgery is scheduled for May 31st! My preop diet consist of two protein shakes &a portion of protein (meat) with two veggies as sides. I can also have healthy snacks like sugar free jello or greek yogurt. I'm doing what I'm suppose to but I'm not losing weight like everyone else has posted & its stressing me out! I've always been a dieter who loses slowly but the pressure is on to shrink my liver! I don't want my surgery delayed bc of this! So if ur stats are similar to mine can u pls share how much u lost on the preop diet or if u aren't having the success that everyone else is posting I'd love to hear from you so i know im not alone -
Well... I'm supposed to eat high protein, low carb and no sodas or sugar up until I start my pre-op diet, which is 10 days long. I'm doing well but I had a food funeral. I went to cherry berry and had fat free frozen yogurt with fruit and granola. It wasn't sugar free though. I knew it my diet was gonna be hard and that there is the possibility that I mayslip, but I didn't realize the self-loathing and guilt I'd feel after. I keep thinking how I always tend to self-sabotage myself and wonder if I'm the only person who feels something like this if I veer off the straight and narrow

Hi - I too was banded on 4/28/08! During my pre-op testing it was discovered that I had many gall stones, as well as a hietal (sp?) hernia. Had to have the gall bladder removed, hernia repaired and was banded all at the same time. I'm on liquids as well as soft foods (shredded cheese, yogurt..); not hungry at all. Judy

Syntrax Nectar Protein

Another good thing to do with these is mix them with cottage cheese or yogurt....it helps to keep the carbs and protein in balance and makes them less boring -
Issue With Meat
blondegal_ replied to MrsFraga2016's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like Mexican food so for grilled chicken I'll dip it in plain Greek yogurt that had Mexican spices. Helps out if chicken is dry and I get some protein with the Greek yogurt. -
I have a completely knee replacement with limited bend so I completely understand! It definitely limits what I can and cannot do. I am 15 weeks out so I am working on adding fruits and veggies into my diet. I am getting better. I still have some premixed shakes but only use them seldomly. The things I don't eat at all.... Breads (occasional whole grain slice of toast); rice, Pasta, processed foods, sweets, sodas, fried foods, caffeine. I generally start with a scrambled eggs with turkey sausage crumbles and a Greek yogurt with my supplements. dinner will be a Protein with 1 cup of mixed greens and 1/3 cup of berries. I add a lite dressing. Supper again is a protein with a vegetable. I will have a morning snack of nuts/cheese or fruit and 1/2 a Protein Shake. And afternoon snack is usually a yogurt. I also am addicted to SF Popsicles. I get between 750-850 calories a day and my nutrient count is usually protein-60-80gr; carbs 50-60; fats 28-less.

My doctor is very detailed oriented that's for sure. What were you allowed to have during your first week? Sent from my SamsungGalaxy using BariatricPal App Just liquids. I'm starting week 3 tomorrow, and I am finally allowed to start on some softer foods. I have tried mash potatoes, greek yogurt, and chicken, and Beans already. Happy to report it all went well. I can't have more than one teaspoon at a time though. Or else just like a little baby it gets stuck, and I may have to get it up again. (disgusting) I hope you are doing well during your week 3. I was able to start week 3 on Friday. I was so sick of mashed potatoes after week 2. I'm also so glad to be off the Protein shakes. I'm able to have 1/2 an egg, up to 1/4 cup of tuna, 1/4 - 1/2 piece of whole wheat toast or 1-2 crackers. Sent from my SamsungGalaxy using BariatricPal App

Any night shifters out there...need suggestions
BlackBerryJuice replied to OneSpoiledRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ah, I miss the 4 am Denny's runs after those "19-year-old male with profuse vomiting, alcohol ingestion" 911 calls! These days, when I'm away at school all day, I pack hardboiled eggs, small yogurt containers, Protein shakes, and a couple of wheels of Babybel cheese - Gouda is my favorite, it's quite soft. I don't know if you are doing a low-carb thing, but I also like fruit. Right now, I've got plums and persimmons in the fridge. -
Good Morning LB People- I am 20 days Post op and had a few concerns. My band is a 6 CC band and was filled with 2 CC's on the day of surgery. At the beggining, of course I was eating only liquids and everything was fine. I had to crush my pills and mix with yogurt for the first week and a half. I noticed when I ate the yogurt it was thick and I could feel it go all the way down my throat to my stomach. Once i got to soft solids and now solids I didnt have any issue with food going down. Im not sure if this is normal or not.. I have not had ANY breads or beef because I know it's a common "stuck" foods, but I have had NO problem eating anything else. Im not feeling restricted and Im just curious if this is normal since I have not had a fill yet. I know after fills it becomes much tighter and harder to eat food. Someone help :smile2:

Hey yall! Good luck to the preOpers and good work to the postOpers! Just wanted to share my fave way to get proteins and veggies in. I use my protein powder (Combat Protein Powder cookies and cream flavor, by Muscle Pharm from Costco). Then I add about a cup of fresh spinach leaves (from the bags in produce dept), a half of banana, some milk, ice, and peanut butter powder (PB2). Throw it all in the blender and u get a yummy nutritious protein shake! U can't taste the spinach at all! The drink has a light green color but it is wayyyyyy tastier then the protein shakes alone! The spinach helps me use the bathroom without taking pills. There's so many different things u can add to the shakes to agree with your taste buds cuz the shakes alone kid of were hard to get down even preop! Look for different ways to make them. Greek yogurt and peanut butter also adds more protein to the shake which is always a plus! Another tasty treat is Fat free sugar free black cherry jello mixed with greek yogurt! Again adds lots of protein even as a snack- it reminds me of jello with whipped cream when u mix it up. I also live on SF and FF Popsicles and Fudgicles! Very low cal snack that soothes my sweet cravings! I wish lots of luck to everyone who's sleeved or getting sleeved! Knock it out the park people!!!! ✌️

Lorrie1, I am glad I could help. as for the "liquid diet", you are right it is mostly things like yogurt and strained soups etc. Basically, you are trying to shrink your liver before the surgery and not irritate your stomach afterward. My docs' rule of thumb was "If you can get it through a straw, you can have it". I almost had that NY Strip through the straw by day 7, but.....no, I am kidding. I was so excited and nervous about the surgery, and busy second guessing myself, it really went by quickly. I started watching those shows on the Discovery channel like "Super Obese" and some others and thinking that I should be able to do this on my own, I shouldn't need the surgery, blah, blah, blah. Then I decided that I should not "should" on myself. This was something I wanted to do and needed to do so I could lose the weight and keep it off, once an for all! I wanted to be healthy, and now I am. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Back to the liquids, my hubby made me this awesome pumpkin Soup when I was on the pre-op and post-op diet and it was a lifesaver. It's not sweet so it does not taste like pie, it is a savory soup that is very dinner like (I first had pumpkin soup at an upscale restaurant). Pumpkin has a lot of Fiber so it makes the soup really stick with you for a while and keeps things moving in the lower regions. You can also substitute butternut squash if you want. I have attached the recipe in a Word document. I think you will like it if you give it a try. I also have a list of pre-op tips like doing all of your shopping including getting a stool softener ahead of time. The combination of pain meds and reduced Fluid intake (while you learn to coordinate you food/fluid intake) tends to constipate a lot of people and you don't want to strain, so a softener REALLY helps. You don't want to take a laxative because you have so little food intake that you don't want to rush the nutrients out of your body. Anyway, I will look for that list and post it for you. Meanwhile, here is the pumpkin soup recipe. Pumpkin Soup Recipe.doc

Need snack/meal ideas for work at 2-6 weeks post op
BigViffer replied to theatrejo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
lauraellen80's post is excellent. Buy the tupperware cups and don't purchase individual foods. More preservatives are in those for some reason. In my case, I packed cottage cheese, applesauce and greek yogurt. Better develop a taste for greek yogurt, it's a lot higher in Protein than American so you don't have to eat as much. Don't worry, it will be funky at first but you will acclimate to it soon enough. I buy the Faget plain yogurt in the big tub and add Torani sugar free flavoring or PB2 Protein powder to suit my tastes. Applesauce is not high in protein, but it is in Fiber and you are going to want that. Dried apricots, prunes and figs can be put into a blender with your protein powders for a well rounded food/drink combo. Those individual tuna bags are awesome, but try to avoid the canned chicken and tuna salad. They are too high in fat. Also, get a good shaker cup. Damn things cost $15 sometimes, but you will have it by your side at all times and you don't want one that leaks after being washed a couple times. Don't ask me how I know. Crystal Light Water enhancers are a lifesaver for me. The water at my office tastes like pool water to me, so that helps mask it. Hope this helps! -
Not really sure I'm happy with my gastric sleeve surgery choice
auntiem0502 replied to pinklady08619's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was required to attend a Nutrition Class, and got a handout describing what is allowed in each "phase". Although I still have a few questions before surgery. My date is 3-6. Lap Sleeve. Week 1: Clear liquids (broth, Water, Crystal Light, SF Popsicles) Week 2: Liquids, also includes SF pudding, Greek Yogurt, Cream of Wheat, Tomato, Butternut Squash Soups. Unsweetened applesauce Week 3&4: Puréed (Baby food, whipped Low fat Peanut Butter, almond butter,) Week 5: Ground meats, string cheese etc. You should still get more instructions from your Dr., I'm not sure why, but everyone on here has different guidelines per their surgeon. My surgeon group/dietician doesn't like Protein shakes etc. But I'll be asking about the Unflavored no carb whey/isolate powder to add to Soup. -
1 Week out- Need some advice--
Malaika replied to Angela77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Angela - at 1 WEEK OUT, I was on clear liquids (for 10 days), then full liquids for 10 days, then mushies for 10 days, then food as tolerated. If your doctor gave you yogurt in the hospital and you've eaten all the things you have eaten and haven't had any pain or nauseau, I seriously doubt you've caused any damage to your stomach. I would say continue on your program the way you are being careful to eat soft/blended/non-spicy foods for at least another 3-4 weeks. it sounds from all that you've said that your body is adjusting fine to your new diet. I am sure you have not sabotaged your weight loss now or in the future, IMO. -
I am in this stage as well, but less than 2 weeks post op. My pouch likes eggs. I did a scrambled egg with some american cheese to moisten it and it went down well. I also did egg salad smushed to a puree and that was tasty and good too. I ate the crab/cheese filling of a few crab rangoons that sat in my stomach like a lead weight. I won't try that again, but it was silly of me to try that so early out. The family had goulash and garlic bread one night so I took some of the meat sauce before the Pasta was added and tossed it in the magic bullet (blender) until it was the consistency of cat food. I sprinkled some parmesan cheese on it for added Protein and ate about 2 T. of that. It was delicious and sat well. Today I am going to puree some lentil Soup for lunch. I have a sweet potato for later in the week. I will bake it then mash it up with some liquid to thin it out. I prefer to stay away from white potatoes because they are a waste of space in the tiny amount I can eat at this point. I also plan to make chicken chili later this week and will puree some of that and add liquid of needed. I've only been doing real food for a couple of days so I haven't tried much and can eat so little, but everyone is different. My pouch likes Greek yogurt best and I can actually eat a whole serving of it. You may be different. Search the boards for ideas. Ricotta bake seems to be popular. It's like no pasta lasagna, just layers of ricotta mixed with an egg and seasonings, layered with sauce and cheese and baked. I also have some refried Beans I'll try next week. They seem too thick to try this early out for me.
