CAN you eat vs SHOULD you eat
Hammer_Down replied to ShelterDog64's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was self pay in Mexico. I read on here and dozens of publicly accessible medical journals through NIH, NHS and Health Canada before even making contact with the surgeon in Mexico. I started receiving preop emails around the time I was to begin and have received weekly post op care emails each week since surgery. I also fortunately had a long history (of success) with low carb and ketogenic diets, and unfortunately also with drug and alcohol addiction and other self destructive behaviours. The latter contributed to my weight gain, and I made a decision to get totally clean and chart a new path for my health and sanity. Perhaps that's why I don't mind straight advice. I can't get down with Jesus or higher power BS and thus 12 step programs were never on my radar. I indulged myself in information and tried to educate myself as well as possible about any and all possible outcomes. This has always been my approach, and I totally accept that it's not for everyone. Some people want information presented to them personally on a silver platter and some of us need to be muckrakers and find it ourselves to believe it. What I can't accept is anti-informational people. People who don't want the truth and are happy subsisting in an echo chamber of what they want to be true instead of what is true. People who want sympathy instead of empathy. -
My surgery application was denied by Fed BCBS.
trekker954 replied to cyndi990's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was approved by BCBS Fed in 2016. I was required to show 2 years of BMI history. I didn't think the policy changed at all from 2016 to 2017. If was submitted DEc. 21 - they should have processed it in 2016. -

Crushed by today's weigh-in
ShelterDog64 replied to White Sale's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@White Sale It's SO HARD when you know you're on plan, following your surgeon's advice to the letter and still NOTHING on the scale to speak of. But, as others have said, it WILL come off. WLS failures aren't people like you, who do what they're supposed to and just lose more slowly than others...I know that you know this! I'm in a dead stall at about 6 mos out and I'm irritated by it and fed up with it...I know it's going to end and the scale will start moving again, but I'm just peeved. We can be mad together, break our stalls and Celebrate it together Hang in there! -

My paperwork was submitted December 21, 2016 for approval. Jan 3rd 2017 I called and found out I was denied, because I don't meet the New guidelines for 2017. I am really upset about it ????. I don't think it's fair. Now I need 2yrs bmi >35 w co mobilities 40> w out co mobilities. 90 days NUT , psych eval. I have NUT class and psych eval but I need 1full year with BMI >40. Has this ever happened to anyone. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Sent from my SM-J700T using the BariatricPal App -
Complications from advancing diet too soon
justhere4theshow replied to Frenchie1977's topic in Rants & Raves
I continue to be shocked--although less and less as time goes on--at how rude and hateful some people can be. Do what you want, eat what you want, and you'll end up right where you started: fat (and maybe dead). If you spend all your time on the internet getting advice from strangers, you might want to re-evaluate some things. It's one thing to start an open discussion in the spirit of sharing and voicing your own experience, but it's quite another to get on here so you can judge and berate people. I have switched from looking to this forum for support and learning to reading the various nonsense and BS purely for entertainment. -
Anybody on here have PCOS?

So.....stop. Just stop. Quit sabotaging your ability to gain results. It's not too late to get realigned with the suggested methods your bariatric group instructed you on. You use the term, "I can't ". I'm calling BS on this. You can, you simply choose not to. You've had weight loss surgery.....altered your body in order to set yourself up for losing weight. It's not to late to make the mental adjustments needed to support this. People the world over are flooding their gyms and diet centers this month in hopes of fulfilling their New Year's resolutions to lose weight. Be a joiner, lol. Follow along.....or better yet....lead the way. You've had a head start on them.....now leave them in the dust. Or don't. Your choice. Keep doing as you've always done and be content with not getting the most from your surgery. Or follow the rules and thrive with the benefits that will be forthcoming.

I follow the not drinking for 30 mins after bc to be honest it hurts if I drink too soon after eating. I'm not sure if that's the reason they told me 30 mins before and after. If I'm eating something spicy I may take a sip or 2 but I rarely drink while eating just bc it does hurt occasionally. My stomach can only hold so much I guess [emoji4]

British Columbia Sleevers
onmywaytohealthy73 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi there, the BC sleevers thread was getting slow so I thought I'd try a new one. Happy 2017 to all I started my journey March 2015 when my referral went in through the Richmond, BC program. December 15 was my orientation...things moved quite quickly and I met with the surgeon yesterday and got a date for surgery, January 23 I hope anyone else going through the process would like to keep in touch and we can offer support to each other. What is the difference?
kell911 replied to JersSlimDown's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It states the 6 months or a 3 month pre-surgical multidisciplinary . The 3 month one seems to be the better one to do. That is what I have to do for the BCBS Fed. Do you have any co morbidities? -
DS-ers! Question about food intake!
Postop replied to KWeilbrenner09's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
At 11.5 years out, I eat a lot. For instance, 2 [6 oz. pre-cooked] hamburges w/cheese & catsup. Now, I don't eat them in 1 sitting. It takes 2, but I finish them. For breakfast: maybe a 3 egg omelette with cheese & bacon (some people add toast, too). Again, it takes 2-3 sittings to finish it. But I sure do. YMMV. This didn't happen overnight. I ate 1 tsp. of scrambled eggs [for a meal] the first couple of weeks. I got up to 1 or 2 scrambled eggs for Breakfast at a year or so. To supplement, I had 1 Protein shake per day (for the first year) bc I couldn't eat enough to get in the protein I needed. Once I could eat all my protein the shakes were no more (as they are for most full DSers). We eat! -
For full DSers, we don't count calories. Ever. I haven't looked at a calorie since I had my DS in 2005. Just sugar and simple carb. grams (and, of course, Protein grams). Plus, you malabsorb. This renders a calorie count (e.g. say it's 1000 calories for a 10 oz. piece of steak [i made this up. I have no idea.]) incorrect. There are posts around regarding DS math, malabsorption & calories. I don't follow them bc I don't count calories. But I could direct you to them, if you want.

Im also itching! Im 7 wks post & i think its the body going through changes bc of low calories, all these supplements & major surgery... Ya know how folks say they loose their hair? Well, maybe we itch first.... I've been moisturizing like crazy, keeping hydrated...no new detergents or soaps...this itch began for me really during pre-op diet phase when the sugar went bye-bye & the protein consumption went up... I hate this itchy sh*t but I think the changes we made fuels it on.

@@Gucci believe it a head hunger, I'm 10 weeks out and that happen to me around the same time. Just keep drinking your protain shakes when u feel that way. Bc if u decide to eat what is out of your diet!, u will be stalled for a long. (My experience) Sent from my SM-G928T using the BariatricPal App

@@Modesta Try to be kind to yourself. You sound like you are truly struggling. Not with just the weight loss You explained some stressful life events one of your past posts http://I was sleeved Nov. 2015. Stats sw245 cw191 lw185 (gained weight back) I am not losing weight like I wanted and I know its BC of the bad choices I make. I have gained weight back and i am only a year out.Sometimes I wonder if I "broke" my sleeve BC I feel no restriction. I know better, so why is it so hard for me to do better. I have been pretty stressed the past few month not being able to find employment and sitting at home filling out applications only to her rejected every single day. I've started the pouch test but never make it to the 5th day. I really wanted this surgery BC I wanted to be healthier for my children. I had a heart attack at the age of 33 and the doctor said I needed to lose weight and then I got sleeved. I wanted this so bad but I feel like I'm sabotaging myself. Any way that's my story. Ugh... I need help. Support. Hopefully someone out there understands where I am coming from. It's a good idea to ask for help with the mental side of weight loss. Stress emotional eating does not mean you are doing this to yourself on purpose.(self-sabotaging) It may mean it's time to deal with some things and find ways to cope. The struggles are very real. My heart go's out to you.

Thinking About Gastric Sleeve Surgery
izzy13 replied to MelissaRose24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish at 28 I knew surgery was an amazing tool to help me. I wouldn't have wasted money on trying Jenny Craig just one more time in hopes of keeping the weight off or other fun dieting gimmicks that never worked. Or joining the gym to turn around at the door bc I was afraid people would stare and watch my rolls flap together. I did Zumba at home on my wii, I enjoyed it but it didn't do what I needed it to do. It's not a last resort and if diet and exercise worked people wouldnt be spending time, money and effort on surgery bc it's definetly not a picnic in the park on a sunny day. It totally sucks at times but the benefits from it far outweigh the risks for some. I'm glad I didn't waste more time and finally (after a year of dealing with insurance) at 35 years old I'm the proud owner of a sleeve. Joined the gym last week and worked out with no thoughts of rolls flapping @@MelissaRose24 do your research, it's a tough recovery and it does impact your life. I no longer base my days on meals and that's been a huge adjustment, my family gets together for dinner and it's a hard reality when I can't eat what they are eating or get full after 2 bites. I'm learning, but everyone around me is too. As for pregnancy, I know it's far off for you but my sister's friend was sleeved and 18 months later had a beautiful baby boy, she has kept the weight off and looks amazing even after pregnancy. So if this is a step you take just know it is possible!! Good luck -
Pulling pain on left side
Jessibird replied to nikki0910's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 2 wks post op from the by-pass and I have a lot of pain on my left side also. I actually feel a knot under my skin. I was told beforehand that I would have a spot on the left that hurt a long time. I have to hold it when I get up and walk. Don't do too much bc I overdid it one day and really paid the next day with pain. I am pretty sure that is where they cut the stomach muscle to get in and passed the tools thru. I have read that it hurts a lot until one day it just stops. Sent from my SM-J700T using the BariatricPal App -

Good luck to you JacquieK. I was banded in 2010, started at 260 with pre surgery weight of 245. I lost weight and was going great, but never got below 200 lbs. My Bariatric doctor moved his practice so I had 2 choices of doctors. Things were going well, so I didn't go to a new doctor for a while. (The next closest doctor was 1.5 hours away.) Fast forward a few years my weight crept up and my band was too tight. Met new doctor and took out some Fluid bc of pain and reflux. Still kind of in limbo bc of the distance to see the doctor and wanting to try another diet, (Which the new doc knew about), I finally came back to get back on track. All fluid is out. Did tests on my band bc I want it out. Unfortunately, all they found was a small hernia and my insurance will only pay for revision if medically necessary. Surgeon thinks we should continue with the band. I'm meeting with them in a couple days to express my concerns with staying with the band. I'm the heaviest I've ever been. Just want the get this all resolved so I can get healthy and be able to keep up with my kids Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
