    TMI Poop Talk

    I pooped at the hospital, day after surgery. Right now it is 2-3 days between, I am 9 weeks post op. If I hit 3 days I start taking colace or dulcolax.
  2. Okay, so you bulk up before your weigh in with food, fluid, heavy clothing or shoes, or weighing down your pockets. I would worry that you go the second time without this additional bulk & you weigh a lot less & they think wow you’ve lost a lot of weight great. But the third time your weight has slowed a lot to what would be appropriate for your real weight. Plus the more you weigh the more they may want you to lose before surgery. Be careful, besides taking off my shoes I’ve been asked to remove a heavier skirt before my weigh in so they’d get a more accurate result. (Didn’t wear it on purpose just because I liked it.) My friend was told she was a couple of kilos short of meeting the BMI requirement. I remember who saying oh well a couple of weeks until Christmas & I always put on weight then so I’ll make another appointment for January. She did & she met the requirement. You have Thanksgiving soon so it may be a moot point.

    My surgery date was October 4th. I had gastric bypass surgery. My liquid diet started on September 20th. My weight loss journey started August 3rd at 266lbs. Surgery day I was 236lbs. Today, 2 weeks post op, I weighed in a 224lbs.

The coolest part about the whole experience, despite being tired and hurting, I felt so thankful and fortunate to be there Three years ago I would have scoffed at the idea of doing something like this or made a self deprecating joke to hide the fact that I thought it never would have been possible.

    It took me 5 days from surgery to go. Mostly regular once or twice a day, at most only skip one day. I was good not really experiencing constipation for the first 6 months. Then the literal 6 month mark and it happened twice in about 3 weeks and I nearly died, lol. Not literally, but that's what it felt like. Both times, I wasn't exactly 100% on track (off my eating/drinking routine) and most likely not enough water intake. I am hoping to not repeat that again. I was already taking stool softeners since day 1, but have now added in a green juice, a little extra fiber and some ACV pills.

    I need help

    I am preop and was just reading through the folder my surgeon's office has given me. There's a section called keeping the weight off where they talk about portions after you've gotten past the honeymoon period. They say that a meal should be 3-4 oz of lean protein with 20-25g protein, 1/2 cup of whole grain or starchy vegetables, and then half of the plate is leafy/non-starchy veg and fruit. The most important part for me was where they said: Sometimes portion sizes increase over time. If you feel you are able to eat more at meals, increase the portion of non-starchy vegetables. I would start there, because I think the tendency as appetite increases is to grab a bigger plate and increase everything proportionally. So now you may be eating 5-6 oz protein and 3/4 to 1 cup of starch or grain. And maybe adding in more sauces, more fats, a piece of bread, some alcohol, juice, some sweet treats, a daily snack. My surgeon's plan emphasizes keeping to 3 meals per day without snacking once you're past the first few weeks where you need to supplement with protein shakes just to meet minimum protein goals. But if you can regularly get 20-25g protein at a meal, plus 1/2 cup starch or grain and some veg/fruit, you don't need to eat more than 3 times per day, 4-6 hours apart. This is something that isn't always made clear. When I started this journey, I was certain that gastric bypass would mean having to eat lots of small meals all throughout the day, which is exactly what I'm being told not to do! But you do need to get at least 64oz of water or more all the time, and you can add as much veg and fruit as you need to feel full. I think that is where I would start in your position. Go back to measuring your meals, setting timers to remind you when your meal times are if you need to, eating only food you prepare yourself and/or know exactly what's in it. Check your cupboards for temptations and get rid of them. Pay attention to the urges you have to do something that isn't part of your plan, because that's probably going to show you the problem areas and help you figure out how to change. And most of all, give yourself a little bit of grace, because this isn't easy (no matter what people try to say). Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep. Get fresh air and exercise. Be kind to yourself.

My first one at the clinic (I had 12 prior as an insurance requirement) was just myself and the Dietician he asked me how I was currently eating, and told me he was glad my insurance required 12 prior visits with a dietician before getting to him, then he went over what eating after surgery would be like, showed me a portion size shot glass. Told me about vitamins, and recommended I try different kinds of protein shakes, so I would know what I liked when I got to the 2-week full liquid pre-op. He explained the order to eat my foods in, and to try and get a little of each, after the healing period, during the healing period he said it was more important to focus on protein. lasted about an hour My second visit was virtual, went over the full liquid pre-op diet and was given my start date. My clinic gives you a book on your very first visit that has all of the information, so I was reminded what page the 2-week full liquid pre-op diet was on. lasted about 30 min My third visit was virtual and in a group, we again went over the 2-week full liquid pre-op and over the 2-week post-op at which point there is an in-person visit, where we are evaluated and will be told how to proceed next with our diet. Again we were told what pages to refer in our book. lasted 1.5 hours

    @Charlie21467 - sorry to hear you ended up with Covid, that's no fun even without recently having surgery! Hoping its a mild case and you recover quickly! I just had my sleeve last week, so I haven't moved to solid foods yet, but my surgeon and their team advised me to start small when it comes time to stepping back up to normal foods. Basically after protein water, shakes, and broth, move to lower calorie cream based soups, then greek yogurt, then pudding, then cottage cheese. Once I have those, they told me to start with finer or ground meats, like canned/pouch tuna or chicken, and try mashing it up as fine as possible first. Then work up to straight out of the can. It is more processed, but the texture is more forgiving on our healing stomach tissue. They suggested I try beef last, as it tends to have more issues with intolerance after a surgery. Try a small amount of ground beef or even puree, and if you get sick off it, wait 2 days before trying again. Once tolerated, then stair step it up to more solid textures. After all of that, then work in more fibrous vegetables. They did tell me to avoid potatoes and carrots, primarily due to the large amount of starch (carbs) that will offset the fat burning, but also because my pre-op was very low carb (not quite keto level though) and reintroducing something really heavy in starch/sugar too soon could lead to vomiting. Hope this helps, and let me know if it works for you!
  9. Hi All, I’m almost 2 weeks post op and struggling with hitting my protein goals! Mainly because I don’t like sweets and most shakes have sweeteners. I have tried pea protein with “natural” taste but tastes like raw flour added to the food! Is there no protein powder that is just tasteless and can be added to any food / drink without compromising the original taste? Thanks 😊
  10. Hi all! Newbie here... I've been lurking for months though. LOL I got notice today that my policy covers the surgery but that I cannot gain any weight the entire time I'm in a bariatric program. I'm curious, how many other people have had this as a clause in their policy? And if so, how did you deal with it? Did you gain weight and get kicked out? I find this to be such an absurd requirement. If I could control what the scale does I wouldn't be pursuing weight loss surgery in the first place! I just gained 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks on a new medication (Lyrica) that I have to stop now because its not worth the gain. Doctors are always playing with my meds, what if something else causes me to gain before surgery?? This is such an annoying detail to have to worry about.
  11. so ive been sick for almost a week now, and the fact that the sight of @Arabesque's flatbread actually stirred something (positive, lol) in my stomach makes me think im finally getting better and wont die after all! so i cut myself a slice of baguette for my first foray into solid food since last week tuesday. i've literally been living off tea, orange juice and cough syrup for the past 6 days. good news: it was yummy. (kinda) bad news: this is as far as i got. p.s. and yeah, im looking a little death-ish again, like the good ol days. sigh.

    Questions for pre surgery

    I am 100% NOT putting chicken feet in mine! Also, you might check Amazon if you end up liking the Kettle and Fire brand. It turned out to be about $1.50 cheaper per carton than my local grocery store if I bought the 6 pack there. I have a monthly subscribe and save order to get the best price, and since my surgery isn't until the end of December, I'm buying one 6-pack per month and tucking them away so I have plenty for those first couple weeks when I know I'll want convenience more than anything else.

    December Surgery Buddies!

    December 27th here! I started back in July when a visit to my doctor on the non-surgical side of the weight loss center yielded the suggestion that I consider surgery. I was all too happy to do so after 6 years of nutrition and then meds never yielded more than fleeting results. I did an immersion day in August where I learned all the rules, and then I needed appointments with psychologist and nutritionist before meeting with surgeon in early October. I was hoping for mid-November, but the earliest they had was end of December so I'm making the best of it. My doctor only requires 2 days of liquid diet, which means I can celebrate Christmas Eve but will be on protein shakes for Christmas, but not longer, which is nice. I'm grateful that the kids will be off school and won't need "Mom's Taxi Service" to get them to all their after school activities that week. In the meantime, I've been working on my nutrition, slowly eliminating processed foods, added sugars, artificial sweeteners, breads, snack foods, etc. I've made a lot of progress ridding the house of unhealthy foods and adding more vegetables into my daily diet. I've also bought several bariatric cookbooks and have been choosing some recipes to try in the next 8 weeks so I have practice with them. I'm hoping a few will be winners with the kids, too. We're all working on getting better with nutrition and I'm glad to have them excited about trying new, healthier options.

    Hi Liz! I had a sleeve on 10/9/23. I have had two challenges with swallowing: (1) my soft palate (back of the roof of my mouth) was destroyed by the intubation and it really hurt to swallow! It has just started improving today; (2) I sometimes forget and take a BIG swallow instead of a sip and my body immediately reminds me that was too much! I'll get like 5-10 seconds of what feels kind of like mild heartburn until the liquid works it way through. It's not too painful, but it's definitely uncomfortable. Otherwise, the liquid diet is pretty miserable. But it's only for 3 weeks. I figure I can do anything for 3 weeks, considering the benefit on the other end!

    Daily calorie counts...?

    With my now being six weeks post-op, I'm curious what others' calorie intake has been in the early stages of typically rapid weight loss after surgery and am well aware that intake increases and body weight decreases. I realize everyone is different, and clearly stated in my original post that I have already spoken about this with my dietitian for my own case. I'm not seeking medical advice from an internet forum on what my target should be; I'm opening a conversation about the topic to see where other bariatric patients have found their own successes with respect to their caloric intake as one metric.

    Corinneblooms, I'm 2 weeks post-op today and yesterday my back started hurting -- mid back pain, which I've never had before. I went to the gym a couple of days ago and did the TINIEST number of arm/ shoulder/ back exercises with the TINIEST of weights, but one rep of each left me completely worn out and I left! I've been telling myself that I pulled something or did something, but maybe it's just the post-op thing!

    Some random post op thoughts....

    I'm 68 years old and it was nice to hear from an older member. All of your points ring true and overall you seem to be doing great. Congrats on becoming "normal" size." I'm STILL pre-op. I was one week from surgery and came up with A-Fib which the cardiologist and I are working on. I'm hoping to be able to have the surgery by the end of this year. I think there will both phyisical and mental challenges, we'll see.
  20. I'm one week post op and have been having the oddest stomach spasms when I try to consume anything other than water (and it happens with water sometimes too). It feels like my stomach bunches up into a fist and tries to somersault within my belly. It provokes a wave of sharp pain and nausea and is very unpleasant. I mentioned this to the doc when I was in the hospital and he gave me a med that worked some for the smaller ones, but it has stopped working (he warned it might). I can usually drink water but anything heavier like a protein drink, a strained soup, a protein broth, or even jello provokes this odd cramping sensation. Sometimes it even happens when I'm not eating or drinking at all (in the middle of the night). Has anyone else had this happen early post op? I'm still on liquids and my surgeon said it is okay for me to focus on hydration right now instead of protein so I've been hitting my hydration goals everyday, but getting very little protein beyond what is in lactose free milk. I'm starting to wonder if my stomach will ever let me progress my diet beyond water. LOL

    a lot of people who had COVID had to wait until they were over it, but since your last office visit isn't until next week and your surgery might be scheduled for several weeks out, I doubt you're going to have any issues.
  22. I have been on the road to getting Gastric Bypass, I even got my approval! But of course, I was waiting for my insurance, then they were not getting back to me so I switched insurance companies which will save me lots of money. Once I got my new insurance in place, I contacted my Surgeon's Financial Advisor to see if I needed to redo the process or if I am still good to move forward. Tell me why I didn't hear from her for a couple of months (usually she replies quickly). I emailed her one more time explaining that I am paying lots of money for this insurance plan just for this surgery, she immediately contacted me. She told me that the hospital is closing the practice, but she reassured me that they are moving to a different hospital, and he won't see clients until the second week of January. I am finally happy that I have some answers, but I am still worried that now that my surgeon isn't at this hospital, will my insurance plan still cover me? I have been waiting for what seems like forever for this surgery, but I know it will be worth it in the long run.
  23. I have a surgery date of 11/30/23 and just started wearing the C-PAP as of last week. It is NOT going well at all. I had a score of 4 out of 24 and not sure why they are making do this. I'm lucky to 2 to 4 hours with the thing. I don't like it but attempting every night as they have instructed. I'm hoping after the surgery and I lose some weight that it won't be needed anymore. Just jump through their hoops and i'm sure your surgery will be on track. Gotta say, I have had to wait almost 1 1/2 yrs for this! Oh well, fingers crossed.
  24. Well I had my surgery on the 27th at 10:30 am. I was told it went well with no complications. I was pretty tired afterward. The only pain I had was from laying flat on my back unable to move during the operation and my period started the day before, ugh. I spent one night in the hospital with the option to stay another, but I was really only struggling with nausea and wanted to the 130 mile drive back home over with. today is day 4 feel great, I was feeling pretty good on day 3 (only one nap that day) but I feel even better today. I have not been hungry at all, but I have been following the diet schedule the clinic gave me for the next two weeks.
