    Questions - Contemplating Surgery

    I am having VSG surgery at Endobariatric with Dr. Alvarez on 3/3/23. Dr. Alvarez's fees are almost twice that of other sugeons in Mexico but his credentials, professional memberships/affiliations and surgical success/risk rating is among the best of bariatric surgeons internationally .... I am confident in my choice! You need to evaluate whether you are mentally prepared to make permanent changes to your relationship with food. Emotional eaters frequently go through a mourning period because it is harder to depend on food as a crutch to deal with life's problems and disappointments. WLS does not force a person's compliance. Adherence to a structured plan is essential to success. WLS is not a cure all or quick fix....it is a tool which can HELP us but we still have to be disciplined and put in the work. Not only do we need to physically prepare ourselves for WLS, but mentally as well. Drastic weight loss can cause fluctuations in hormones which can create an emotional roller coaster ride. If you are suffering with episodic periods of depression, i strongly suggest working with a therapist before pursuing WLS, which is a dramatic life changing event. Best of luck to you!

    Weight loss stall 3 weeks out

    It happens to most people. It’s your body reacting to the stress of the surgery, reduced caloric intake, etc. Your body has just temporarily taking a time out. Your weight loss will start again when your body is ready - usually 1-3 weeks. Stick to your plan & breathe. Don’t stress yourself more. Take some body measurements. Some people notice a change on a tape measure even if the scale doesn’t move.
  3. Stalls are very common & yes, the first one usually occurs at week 3 though it can be earlier or later than that. They usually last 1-3 weeks too. They’re your body shutting down & taking a time out in reaction to the stress it’s been under (surgery, reduced calorie intake, etc.). Stick to your plan & it will break when your body is ready & the weight loss will start again. Go back to your team & ask for more information. You’re paying them to support you & you have the right to ask for what ever information you need to feel comfortable & confident about this process & what you have to or can do . We all have different needs (what I was told may not be completely right for you) & they should be there for you. Can’t complain about an almost 7kg weight loss in 4 weeks especially with a stall. I’d lost about the same in my first month (& I never really stalled during that time). My surgeon & dietician were very happy. Not sure of your starting weight, but remember those people who lose those large amounts of weight seen in programs like My 600lb Life started at very high weights. And they only lose at that rate in the beginning.

    For those of you who have have very light colored hair (blonde, grey/white).....BABY POWDER! In a pinch when I need to extend my shampooing, instead of using dry shampoo, I discovered baby powder. It hides my scalp, absorbs excess oil and thickens my hair.

    When did everyone's hair loss begin after surgery? I am almost 2 weeks post op and haven't seen any loss yet but I am sure it will probably come.

    Weight loss stall 3 weeks out

    here are the 17,501 previous posts on the 'three week stall" (and no, I am NOT kidding). Happens to almost all of us. I wish bariatric clinics would tell their patients about this, because we get at least one post every day from someone worrying because they're only a couple of weeks out, and their weight loss has stalled.   7. Kind of freaking out a bit, I'm 3 weeks post sleeve and my weight loss has stalled for the past 4 days. I'm scared I am doing something wrong and not even realizing it. Has this happened to anyone else?
  8. There are a lot of factors that go into weight - hydration, constipation, fat loss vs water loss. It can be extremely frustrating to not see a change on the scale but trust the process! The weight loss is not linear. As for your diet plan - is there someone you can reach out to at the office to answer those questions for you? My surgeon just has protein and hydration goals - no calorie limit. For reference it ended up being about 600-700 calories per day in the soft food stage.
  9. So I haven’t been able to lose any weight since the 2nd week mark of my weight loss journey. I’m 4 weeks out today & ive only lost 6.7kg (1.1 ish stone) I’m feeling so disheartened and don’t know what to do or what I could try. My diet plan from the company I had my surgery with, was awful! I’m not even sure what foods I should and shouldn’t be on. I don’t know how many calories I’m aiming for or capping at…. What exercises are allowed other than walking. I’m just really struggling at this point and I’m not getting decent results, especially compared to those surrounding me! Like seriously it’s turnt my life upside down (which I could live with if the results were decent) and the results aren’t changing. One whole week. My weight loss stood at exactly 6.7kg loss (the exact same to last week.) Any help? Or anyone going through the same!!?

    Big Boned…🤔

    Yes, I’ve heard it. Not really from my family but I used the big boned excuse myself. A lot! Many years ago I went to a large chain weight loss centre where they measured my wrist & told me I was large boned. I clung to that from that day on. Logically I should have known I wasn’t. I mean I’m short & it was obvious I didn’t have a large skeletal frame when I wasn’t carrying weight in the past. Truth is I actually have a smaller frame. The ‘large bones’ they measured was just fat around my wrist.

    Surgery Shaming Should Be A Thing…

    I swear people make you feel like that though. Like why is it a judgemental thing about how you achieve weight loss? I like to be 💯. It is so draining, being phony for me, but it’s like people want some phony mess like, oh! I ONLY did keto, cardio and strength trained or I got lipo. I guess I could NEVER be an influencer, because I can’t lie and my face tells it all even when I try. But, I really do not try to judge, but I leave some conversations like, judge unto others and you would have them judge unto you…I am a bit petty so I said, F-it I am judge they ass too.

    Surgery Shaming Should Be A Thing…

    I will never understand this bizarre notion people seem to have that an "easy way out" for weight loss is a bad thing even if it did exist. Like... why does it need to be a struggle to be ok? Do we need weight loss to be some epic f***ing crawl across a flaming desert of despair to be acceptable to people who aren't involved? Does my head in. Makes me inclined to answer "my own hard work" when asked how I lost so much weight. It's not anyone's business anyway. Also: you look AMAZING! Seriously. And that top you're wearing is gorgeous on you!
  13. Congratulations on your 6 week weight loss. I hope things are healing l and that you are doing well since surgery. The dietician attempted to prescribe Wegovy a few years ago, but my insurance would not cover it. I see the new dietician in a few weeks and I will have her run the Wegovy through and see if it covers it now. If not, I will try and see if they can creatively put the Ozempic through. I don't have diabetes either, I am pre-diabetic. My co-morbidities include elevate cholesterol, obesity and maybe sleep apnea. Scheduled to see sleep study doctor next month also. Fingers crossed that I can at least try one of these before I have to make a decision on surgery.
  14. I had the Vertical Gastric Sleeve on January 23rd, and beside a bit of nausea from the anesthesia the first few days I was doing relatively well for the first 2 weeks. That all changed drastically on week 3 and now week 4. I can come nowhere near the amount of protein or liquids or calories my Dr. wants me to consume daily. The reason being that Thursday of week 3 I began having excruciating pain in my lower abdomen and back and it starts within minutes of taking a sip of anything... It feels like someone is taking my mid-section and wringing it out like a wet cloth... It truly will take my breath away when it is happening... I also had to go back from creamy liquids to just clear liquids and that is very disheartening. On the plus side, I don't have any vomiting (YET), but this other pain is truly making my life miserable... I also, have severe pain in my left shoulder and I have seen in other posts that can be from gas that is trapped there... I have had 2 C-sections and numerous other surgeries, including a gallbladder removal in the past and THIS has to be by far the absolute worst pain that I have ever experienced in my life... Also, my Dr. did order labs on Monday of this week (week 4) and a swallow test and that did show that there was a bit of an issue with the angle of my esophagus to my stomach, but he wasn't overly concerned and put me on protonix... Nothing has changed... Is there anyone out there that has had these same symptoms that can possibly give me any hope that this won't last forever? I am literally in tears every night because I am regretting this decision... Even though I have been successful with weight loss so far... What is weight loss if I feel like death??? Any information or advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

    Food Boredom

    I hope to get back to that point after VSG surgery! Mentally, the thin-me vs the fat-me had a vastly different relationship with food. The thin-me lived by the ethos of "eat to live not live to eat" and "nothing tastes as good as thin feels". After a 2012 accident and major life change, I flipped to the "dark" side with food being more of a focus with my enjoyment in food replacing the of joy of living life's events. Long term success will be increased if you establish some new habits and interests while taking advantage of the diminished focus on food. Look to becoming more active in your community, i.e. volunteer work, tennis, pickleball, adult softball leagues, Habitat for Humanity and/or; art, computer or carpentry classes at the Community College. WLS gives us a tool to help us to LIVE LIFE rather than just EXIST on the sidelines! You are mourning the loss of your love affair with food. You have to replace that loss with a love of something else....preferably something healthy....active and more conducive with your new life's goals!

    Chronic pain, WLS, and exercise

    I have Fibro and am also bone on bone in both knees, one worse than the other. Conventional exercise is not an option for me atm. I'm awaiting surgery for the sleeve and then a knee replacement. For now, since October, I joined my local gym which has a pool. I attended multiple group classes with various instructors. Most times don't mesh well with my schedule so I've taken the things that work for me and make my own routine. My husband has noticed, as have my clothes (lol) a definite loss of inches. And on the machine at the gym I've gained muscle mass and lost fat, even though the number on the scale has seemingly stayed the same. My husband also says I move better although I do still favor that one knee. If you've got a gym close by that has a pool, it would be worth the effort. I go 3 to 4 times a week, for at least an hour. I jog in place for 30 to 40 minutes, then finish with my strength exercises. Then, I treat myself to the hot tub. I can say that outside of pilates on a reformer, this is something I really look forward to since I've never been a huge exercise advocate. I love stretching and yoga, but I do that on my bed.     Surgery more than 2 years ago?

    Good morning, Started 291 current weight 216.6 Goal 200, recently moved and need to exercise more with home-prepared meals, move into a townhouse in 2 weeks then I expect to shed off the additional weight. Did you hit your goal? Nope initially set a 185 lb goal but I am happy with 200., I am 5'9" and shaped like a triangle (chicken legs :)) Did you stall at any point and what did you do to get past it? yes, I stalled at 240 for a year and frankly, Ozempic helped a lot. I am a Type 2 and was put on it to get my A1C in control, side benefits are a metric crapton of weight loss 40 lbs at the best because it makes me slightly nauseous and kills my hunger response. Gain any weight back? I waffle between 200-205 normally but recently spiked up to 220 after moving and eating out all the time. Loose skin? yes but luckily as a fella, it's not as bad for me and my wife is super supportive of the minor apron at 200. Improvements in comorbidities like diabetes or sleep apnea? I am a diabetic and the Type 2 (a1c) is now the normal range (under 5.7), off metformin and still take Ozempic (by choice). I was sleep apneic and not only my beautiful wife snores. It is cute :). I sounded like I was dry water drowning and she had to put up with that for years prior to the CPAP then the hum of the machine... Regrets? Only when I eat at great restaurants and telling my coworkers when they notice I do not eat very much. Complications? None really, Tips? Try Ozempic first!! Outside of carbonated beverages anything you can't eat or tolerate now? I can drink carbonated beverages but learned that it can be really uncomfortable if I have gas. What's life like for you now? Wonderful, I wear business formal (suits) to work and I am back to tailoring the suits and the dad diaper (huge pants looking like an adult with a diaper in my slacks) has disappeared. My waist went from 46 to 32, a huge change.
  18. Hi! Next week my lapband from 2017 will be removed and I will be sleeved instead. My band have been empty for three years and have therefore not been helping me. Can somebody share with me how the weight loss is going if you had first lapband and have sleeve now? 🙏😊💪

    Surgery more than 2 years ago?

    Almost 4 years since my sleeve. Reached goal at 6 months. Exceeded it by another 10/11kg & have basically maintained +/- a kilo or two. Didn’t have co morbidities before my surgery. Didn’t really stall in the truest sense - just odd couple of days with no loss. No complications. Have low blood pressure but always had a tendency towards it. Gone from a couple of times a month to every day. (My higher weight probably kept my BP in the normal range.) Had my gall out about two years after my sleeve but not necessarily related to my weight loss. Still don’t eat rice, pasta, bread, potatoes. They sit heavily in my tummy. Don’t miss them. I have a glass of sparkling water every day but I let it go fairly fiat. Occasionally I’ll have a glass of champagne or have soda or tonic water as a mixer but no other carbonated drinks. Don’t drink much alcohol any more (a glass once a month+/-). Not that I can’t, just not interested. I have loose skin. Not a lot. Can’t really be seen under my clothes … unless you look closely.😉 I wear body conscious dresses without needing shape wear to control the loose skin. No regrets.

    Losing too much weight before surgery

    Oh it was 100% a great thing! But my insurance will only pay for Ozempic if you are a diabetic. I am not. My A1C was excellent. Long story short I only got the insurance approval for the med x 1 year through some creativity and then I wouldn't have been able to get the med any more. And we all know that horrible statistic about long term maintance of massive weight loss. I also have a long and sordid history with yo yo dieting. This is my 5th (5TH!) time loosing more than 125 lbs in the past 20 years. I would lose it and maintain that loss for 3 or 4 years through white knuckle will power and eating less than 1200 calories a day. Then slowly hunger would win and I'd start eating 1400 or 1500 cals a day and the weight would pile back on. Start the process anew in a year. So this surgery was necessary for me for maintaining, not so much losing. I've come to grips with my maintaince calories being 1200. I just need the removal of a large part of my stomach to make that a possibility for the rest of my life without fighting hunger day after day after day. I just drew the metabolism short straw in life. But if you can get your hands on the GLP meds. They are AMAZING. I lost 85 lbs total in 7 months. My surgeon had me stop the Ozempic 2 weeks before my surgery date. I had surgery in 1/4. In the 6 weeks since surgery I've lost 15 pounds. So far... my weight loss was trending faster with the use of Ozempic AND was eating almost double the amount of calories. Go figure! I don't regret the surgery though. I think this will be the tool that helps me keep the weight off for life this time.

    Any 50yo or older?

    Had the sleeve done at the age of 60. lost 85lbs and six years later gained eight back and despite my best efforts I cannot shed them. I tell everyone that I lost my weight loss super powers and now I am a mere mortal when it comes to taking weight off. One word of advice that I give to anyone getting WLS. It is not permanent the weight will come come back if you dont work to keep it off.
  23. So sorry you’ve been experiencing this. It makes me so angry for you that much of what you have experienced could have been prevented right from when you had your bypass surgery. Your surgeon should have gone through your medications, explained about absorption issues with a bypass so you could discuss alternative medications with your prescribing doctor. I’m also cranky it took so long for doctors to identify that malabsorption was causing your meds not to work. And I’m cranky that you’ve been unable to find support & answers from medical professionals. I wonder if you are are now in a viscous cycle of anxiety & anxiety causing experiences. Anxiety meds are known to cause an increase in appetite & weight gain & your anxiety increases when yiu do gain weight. The anxiety causes stress responses in your body like IBS & hair loss causing more anxiety. You’re not being supported by your medical community increasing your anxiety so you need their help more but aren’t getting it making you more anxious, stressed & frustrated. Etc.,, etc. Like @catwoman7, I too think your heart issues were more likely caused by your pre surgery status & lifestyle not the bypass. I hope you soon find some doctors who will actually work together to support you & find solutions or ways to better manage your mental & physical health issues. All the best.

    Gallbladder surgery

    Simply that I grew a gall stone. Just one. It may have been from the sudden weight loss. Could have been because I was/am menopausal, or have high bilirubin levels (have Gilbert’s). All of which can cause gall stones. The only thing I know is mine wasn’t caused by high cholesterol - my cholesterol was always ok. We discovered it about 8 months after surgery during a liver function scan. First & only symptom was horrendous pain some 16 months later. Had the gall removed about two weeks later. My surgeon said: if you’ve grown one stone, you’ll likely grow more so better it goes. It’s not an uncommon surgery during or after weight loss surgery. Some are discovered during the pre surgery testing and the gall is removed in the same surgery. These are often the high cholesterol caused stones. Others have their stones discovered & their gall removed some time after surgery. These are often caused by the dramatic weight loss. There are always exceptions to this of course.

    Grazing, is this normal?

    I think much like @ms.sss about snacking: it’s regular & planned. Portions & nutrition are considered. To me grazing is random eating of whatever you want, often emotionally/head hunger driven. Portion size or nutrition is if minimal or no concern. I think small meals are planned too & are more rounded like the part serve of a full meal. You might prepare three meals a day but only eat part of one meal at a sitting finishing it a little later on. Like have a first breakfast & then later have a second breakfast to finish the meal. When I was trying to stabilise my weight loss I was snacking about 5 times a day as I my meals were still smaller - couldn’tt eat more.. Once my meals became a little larger & equal to or closer to the recommended portion sizes, I didn’t need to snack as much for my needed calories & protein so I dropped 1or 2 of them a day. Oh & I eat more across a day & more regularly than I did before surgery too. (Was a meal skipper before.) But I eat better - healthier, more nutritionally dense foods - now & my body burns those calories more efficiently than before (thank you surgery).
