So what are you unable to eat now?
Bianca S. replied to mlmx1138's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I haven’t had anything not set well in my new pouch yet I’ve only tried tuna with light mayo, egg whites with sugar free bbq, cottage cheese and with a couple ritz crackers. On my liquids/semi liquid I had protein shakes, Gatorade zero, liquid yogurt Low sugar and non fat, sugar free jello, sugar free pudding, sugar free popsicle and strained soups. I am telling myself not to have bread or pasta due to high carbs and that’s what had me gaining a lot before Surgery. -
Fat and Carb intake at stage 3
Deedee12 replied to Bianca S.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I try my best to keep carbs at below 20 grams. I'm typically at 15 grams net carbs of an approximately 500 cals daily. Fat is negligible for me. It's typically fat in Yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta or my tablespoon of Olive oil. My plan says Dense proteins in fish, chicken, Turkey, canned Tuna, Tofu or eggs. And cooked green veggies OR soft fruits ( Berries except black berries, melon, Apple with skin off, fresh or canned with no syrup). All in 1/2 cup. For every 3 bites of protein, 1 bite of veggies. No starch, grains or sugar. So 60 grams to 80 grams proteins 15 to 20 grams carbs 10 to 15 grams fat Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I wasn't eating salad until I was about six months out. Raw vegetables can be rough on healing stomachs. I was eating either purees or soft foods at that point - yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, refried beans...that kind of thing does your surgeon's office have any guidelines?

I'm on my pre-OP diet (started today)surgery is on the 4th. I get to have 3 protein shakes per day, sugar free drink with a scoop of Nectar. I can have broths, sugar free pudding, sugar free jello, Greek yogurt under 100 calories. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

I am September 4th. I have to be full liquids by tomorrow, I basically eat between 7am-9pm. Throughout the day I have 3 meal replacement shakes. 2 cups of tea. 3 Greek Yogurts. 2 sugar free Jellos. 2 low sodium v-8s. 2 sugar free popsicles. 1 low sodium broth. Not in that order. I have a "schedule" I follow and eat/drink 1 item per hour. -
I 💜 lentils... But a Lentil only cool book... Hmmmm thats super specific so try Google Also can you branch out to other legumes as well (so you dont get stuck in a rut)? All legumes/beans can be cooked very very tender and mashed blended into stew/soup? You can even add unflavored protein powder, yogurt, cheese or cottage cheese as a topping. Good Luck and share if you find something 💜

So, I'm 10 months out and still having problems eating solid foods (doc knows, nothing they can do). Since this appears to be my life, I need to get out of the rut of only eating yogurt for breakfast and dinner. Lentils seem like they go down fine. We have a meal delivery service here that is run by immigrants/refugees and I have been able to get all sorts of delicious Middle Eastern, Indian, and African (lots of stuff from Eritrea and Ethiopia)-style lentils from that. But those have a lot of salt and oil, so I'd love to be able to replicate them by cooking at home. Does anyone know of a good lentil cookbook that has a lot of different styles of cooking? Thanks!

A little weirdo am I

I got sick of protein drinks fast but I knew I needed to stick with it and just kept trying to find the one I could tolerate the most. You have already gotten great advice, @FluffyChixknows her stuff. The head stuff and dealing with bad habits are a roadblock we all have to cross and learn to use the surgery as a tool. The rest is up to us. all I can say is there are tastier protein drinks out there that won’t make you feel sick. I couldn’t stand the smell or taste of some proteins that a lot of people enjoy. I found PEScience protein and tolerate the taste better, now I sometimes mix it with a high protein low sugar yogurt. There is also Unjury protein that comes in broth flavors. And BariatricPal store has a lot of options including protein shots that get you 15 grams of protein in 3oz. They have protein broth, soups, juices and hot cocoa. You can also buy or even make your own bone broth that is a good source of protein. With the support here you will find your way. -
Can't tolerate protein supplements.

Yes! My RD suggested adding powdered milk to yogurt, cottage cheese etc. Great suggestion! -

I couldn't tolerate them either. It is the whey and would trigger my gag reflex. I literally ate night protein yogurt and high protein milk for 3-4 weeks. I recently tried muscle milk coffee latte and it has milk protein and is kinda tasty. -

Have you tried double milk - essentially milk mixed with powdered milk. (or add milk powder to yogurt - water down the yogurt to a consistency you can have). That helped me when I started to not tolerate protein shakes. -
Weighing your food on a food scale
momof3_angels replied to chaibaix's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Disclaimer: I am still pre-op (until Wednesday). I also know that weighing/measuring/and recording foods are going to be my biggest challenge. That said: I do believe from everything I have learned that this will be vital to my success. At least, it will be in the first several months while I retrain my body to eat the right foods in the right portions. In the simplest of explanations: By weighing and measuring your food, you can be sure accurately eat proper portions and nutrient amounts. When we "eyeball" amounts, we tend to serve ourselves more than we are supposed to eat at one time. When we do that, we are overeating. We also are more unsure of what amounts of nutrients we are eating (too many carbs, too little protein). My "small" bowl may only hold 4 ounces of food, your "small" bowl" may hold 6-8 oz of food. That is a huge difference, and can mean the difference in being successful or not with your weight loss. The goal is to get the right portion sizes with the right nutrient amounts. And in keeping portion sizes small, you are reducing the risk of stretching your stomach back. When you do that, you are more hungry and you want to eat more. I hate measuring, so right now I buy individual sized servings of anything I can. 1 serving of tuna or chicken. 1 serving of greek yogurt or v-8 juice. Or whatever foods I have been told to eat. Post-op... I know I will be eating less at each meal for a while. So, I purchased 2oz and 4oz disposable containers. I will use them to put things like my jello and yogurt into until I am up to a full serving. For tracking food, I am learning to use the Bariastic app... but there are other apps you can use. I like this one as it is pretty simple to use, and I can take a picture of UPC codes for my foods. I also bought scales for food not long ago. Another tool I bought was a bariatric portions plate/bowl. Waste of money? Maybe. But I am hoping it's plate bowl sizes and visuals will retrain me to automatically serve myself smaller portions. I have 2 bowls, 2 plates, and some smaller spoons/forks. Eventually I hope to not have to measure everything, but for the first 6 months to a year I will do my best to measure and track EVERYTHING. -
As everyone said, nuts and nut butters are high in fat and carbs for a much smaller protein return. So at first, I don't think they are very good tummy real estate investment. At first, I had so many problems with them. They made me so nauseous--cuz of the fat and heaviness of them. But I was able to do the PB2 just fine (de-fatted) and that is actually a pretty good calorie bargain. It mixes well in smoothies and Greek yogurt. Now I can finally deal with an ounce of nuts or 1-2Tbsp of nut butter. But I do make sure they fit my macro goals for the day. It adds all three macros: fat, carbs, protein.

You're doing great! Congrats! Continue with your healthy foods! Don't revert back to eating bad crap. You've now had 30days of clean living to help break that bond/habit. Right? So reverting will just re-awaken and reinforce the habit. Add foods slowly and one at a time. That way you can see and know which food affects you and how. I added eggs first, then a couple days later, I added poached/foil pouch white fish filets. I did well with both. Then I added canned tuna and canned chicken with low cal, low carb gravy. Or made it into an egg salad: 1 pouch/can tuna in water (or chicken/salmon/crab) 1 hard boiled egg, mashed with fork 1/4c cottage cheese (65g) 1/8c Greek yogurt (30g) 1 tsp Dijon Mustard 1 tsp dill pickle relish (optional) granulated garlic s/p Mix everything together and enjoy. I started with eating 1/8c - 1/4c of this every 2-3 hours.

Initially I had the PB powder mixed into milk or yogurt. you can mix it with water to make a great tasting peanut butter too. I am in maintenance now so 1-2 times a week I will eat 1 tablespoon of peanut butter if I need the calories and protein. Early on I would even put 2-3 tablespoons of cool whip in a bowl and sprinkle the PB powder on top and sometimes add a teaspoon of sugar free Hershey syrup so I felt like I was eating a peanut butter ice cream treat.

Nutritionist thinks I should be eation 1000 cals a day!
mousecat88 replied to Briswife15's topic in Food and Nutrition
Dannon light and fit yogurt for breakfast, Chomps beef/turkey stick for snack, BariatricPal Lite Entree for lunch, some miscellaneous protein snack (like Kay's protein pretzels) for snack, then nonfat cottage cheese or a turkey patty for dinner. If I go out to eat, I get a salad. That's it. Very rarely is it anything else. Sometimes a hardboiled egg. Sometimes a few blueberries. That's about it, though. -
Any August 2019 people out there?

I agree with PEGGO, I had to switch to fruit infused water like HINT to get it down. I start drinking as soon as I wake up and have water in hand when I go for my walks and plan to finish 2 16 oz water bottles before 1pm. I find that I've been a lot more successful walking and drinking. As for eating and getting your proteins, I just do it. I plan for the day and prepare the day before. Breakfast 7ish, lunch 12ish and dinner 7ish. I don't snack much but if I get that hunger pangs, 2 tablespoon of plain lowfat yogurt or cottage cheese eases the hunger. Also due to the sour nature of plain yogurt, I drink more water. Good luck, it does get better..🧡🧡🧡 Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Do you know why you can't finish an egg? Im curious since you have an appetite. I'm also on the puree stage, and as someone who does not enjoy breakfast or eggs, I will say they go down a lot easier without the yolk. 2 egg whites scrambled with greek yogurt. Keeps em a bit moist and fluffy and light.

Did you go to Cleveland Clinic as well? I haven’t really tried any dense proteins yet. The closest I’ve come is scrambled egg, and that I can only eat 1/2 off. But puréed chicken chili today and was able to get 1/2 cup down no problem. I’m ok with entire Greek yogurts, too. With ricotta bake I can only do about 1/4 cup. So I guess I am feeling restriction? Maybe just not as much as I thought.

10 months out. My total cholesterol and LDL are both up. But that's likely because I've been having a lot of problems with my stomach, so the only things I can reliably eat without pain are soft foods like yogurt/milk/cheese. So I eat a lot of that, which is likely killing my cholesterol .
-
Your satiety/fullness feeling will improve with denser foods. So like eating canned tuna will give you more satiety than yogurt. Cottage cheese will give you more satiety than either yogurt or protein drinks. Eggs depending on how you eat them will give you a lot more satiety than other proteins even. The wetter a food is, the more of a slider it becomes. So if you have trouble with meat sticking, one solution is "meat lube" to eat each bite with a low cal low carb gravy. And it goes down easier--cuz it's wet. And by the time you work up to the final stage of lean dense proteins, then you will or should have satiety in place after your appropriate size meal.

Wow! Thanks for posting this. Docs are SOOOO different! They are referencing 3-4oz by weight = about 21g of protein. But the crazy thing is that 3-4oz may occupy as much as 1/2c-1cup of volume!!! That's just nutzo and asking to stretch your tool, hon! Especially in the early days where you don't have a good grasp on satiety and a lot of what you are eating will be sliderish food. You can probably handle 1/2 cup of yogurt. But 1/2cup of cottage cheese might give you some issue. Right? You might do just fine with pureed cream of chicken soup, but 1/2 cup of refried beans will land you in pain before you realize you're full. Right? Hmmm. Dunno how to help here...

I'm 6 months out and can barely eat 2 oz of dense protein and I get a very full feeling. I don't understand why your Dr would advance you to 6-8 weeks at 2 weeks. Personally I don't feel getting enough protein in without shakes/high protein yogurt is possible. Take it slow at your stage. It will be best to allow for the most weight loss. Good luck!

Any August 2019 people out there?
BeeBop211 replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery August 9th. Recovery is going well, I was up and walking 2 days after surgery. The worst part was the 1st 24 hours, I had terrible nausea for the 1st 12 hours and a lot of pain for the 1st 36 hours. However, the pain faded pretty quickly and I was off the oxy by Tuesday the 13th. I'm down 26 lbs from my pre-surgery weight. I've been going to the gym daily and putting in 45 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical for the last 10 days and that has really kick started my weightloss. I've been losing about a 1lb a day since I started cardio. I started soft foods this week and that has gone pretty well. Eggs and cheese (Yeah cheese omlets) go down flawlessly as well as soft pasta, steamed fish, yogurt and fruit smoothies (Shout out to my Vitamix). I made the mistake of having a little crab meat, that was the only thing I ate this week that made me super nauseous. I'm going to have to wait a few more weeks before trying crab again. I also had a tiny little bite of my wifes steak and that actually went down fine. The biggest change I've noticed is my sweet tooth has been greatly reduced, I had a few bites of ice cream and it tasted overwhelmingly sweet. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the surgery.
