    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hey July buddies! how are we all. So Im coming to the realisation that my body is starting to plateau! For the first time. Yes I’ve been very lucky I’ve lost weight every week since surgery, sometimes 1lb, sometimes 5lb. however the last 3 weeks I’ve been sitting between 149-147lbs. It goes up and down. Sometimes daily! i started at 210. So I’m really happy with what Ive achieved!l so far! However I kinda wanted to be around the 138 mark as a overall target. my BMI is now in the green for ‘normal’ does this mean I’ve hit my end goal? Is my body telling me that’s it now? i mean I can’t complain I’ve gone from a UK18-20 to a UK8-10! but I’m still a little disappointed. either that or I need to just bide my time and wait. I’m hitting about 1200 calories on a good day - 600 on restricted days. But have notice the last few weeks I can eat a little more per portion. perhaps I need to exercise more.. if im honest I don’t do much… im not good at exercise 🤦🏻‍♀️ just leaving this here as I complain to my family and friends and they think I’m being weird and just thought you guys would understand where I’m coming from. xxx

I hate that I had this surgery

I’m really sorry for how you’re feeling. I believe part of the nausea you’re experiencing is the lack of proteins and calories in your diet. I agree with others that you need to add non-flavored protein powder to your broth or whatever you’re drinking. You really need the proteins and at least 1000 calories to function. I would suggest making an appointment with a therapist. I believe a therapist will be beneficial in helping you workout those issues regarding with your surgery. A therapist will also teach you ways to be with family members even if they don’t support you. I know from experience what your body does when you push your feelings and frustration away or try to deal with them alone. Your body can physically make you sick. I had gotten so sick for almost two years for not dealing with tough issues with my older sister my college classes. I let it fester to the point I ended up using my wheelchair cause every time I stood up to try walk I passed out. Doctors didn’t know what was causing the problem. It through all kinds of testing. All tests came back normal. Finally a psychiatrist came to my hospital room to evaluate me. He figured out that my continued passing out ended up related to severe stress to where I had withdraw from my college classes. I think you’re trying to deal with your emotional pain by yourself or you’re pushing the away so you don’t have to deal with them. With that said this could be adding to the nausea along with the lack of of nutrition you’re experiencing. I know when I was having nausea from my gastric sleeve surgery which was on 11/01 I was afraid to drink anything except my water. When I explained this to my doctor, he said my nausea was due to lack of protein and calorie intake. Even though it was difficult I had to push myself to drink my protein drinks. I have the Boost Glucose Control MAX 30g of protein. My doctor and nutritionist require me to get 64 to 80 grams of protein per day.

    Can't wait

That’s weird that you already had your pre-op appointment a month ago but no surgery date scheduled. Most of the time the surgery date gets scheduled first then the pre-op appointment gets scheduled. I knew when my surgery date 4 months prior which was scheduled on 11/01/2021. The end of September I was given my pre-op appointment 2 weeks before my surgery date. My pre-op and surgery appointments were done by the scheduling department at the hospital I was having my surgery done. What’s concerning is that is you stated your doctor is so busy. So if he is so busy did his office schedule your pre-op appointment or did the hospital? Can you call your doctor’s office and talk with one of the staff about your surgery to see what is happening. You really need to start getting some answers of when your surgery is happening. Hang in there.

    This surgery is bullshit...

Husky mama mentioned using the Baritastic app. I’ve been using this app since I started the required weight loss program prior to my surgery. BTW my gastric sleeve surgery was 11/01/21. I love using this app. I found out there is a timer. My nutritionist suggested that when eating there should be at least 20 seconds between each bite. That means put your fork down and chew your bites thoroughly then swallow. There are exceptions to the rule with foods such as scrambled eggs, yogurt etc. With that said this will help slow down your eating. The question is are you eating too fast and finishing your meals in less than 20 to 30 minutes. If you have a scale go back and start weighing your food again. Finally if your weighing yourself everyday day you’re not going to see changes. Pick a specific day and time to weigh yourself. Then weigh yourself once a week on the that specific day you chose and you may see some progress. I wish you the best and please don’t give up. You’ve gotten a lot of good advice and I hope you will read them use these to help you succeed with your weight loss. Keep us updated on your progress as all of us want to continue to support you. 🙏🙏🙏
  9. So did I, and i turned out just fine. I too was often lightheaded the first little bit, and went through a period of food aversion. From month 3 to 7, weight loss sowed down to roughly 10lbs a month (i was eating more, as well as getting smaller, reducing my need for calories) Lost another 10+ lbs after goal and been sitting there more or less ever since. Im 3 yrs out. I assume you have shared your lack of energy and other concerns with your doc and nut? And that your labs have come back with uneventful results? Unless your team is worried, probably no need for you to either. Good Luck! ❤️
  10. Has anyone else experienced this? The majority of my protein is still protein shakes - seven months later and I still cannot eat poultry, beef, most shellfish or pork without needing to go throw up. The only real solid animal-based protein I can 'stomach' is steamed clams and some cured meat. Thanksgiving sucked because I made this amazing turkey and I took one bite and 10 minutes later had to excuse myself to go throw up!
  11. gosh, i don't even know hoe to begin with this. so i already wrote on here once, and things have only gotten worse. i had my surgery september 2019, i was 140 kgs at the time, and after a year i lost almost half my body weight, the lowest i was was 72 kgs. sorry European here, cant do the lbs. anyways, half a year after my surgery, i was basically starving myself, but feeling great, but at the 6 month mark i started to faint. collapsed the first time at a gathering, and then a year after the surgery, when all this started i collapsed fully again. even with collapsing my brain felt fine, active, working out, and all that. however, at the year mark something changed. i started feeling absent minded, with brain fog. i started checking everything, blood work, hormonal work, all normal, but i was suffering cause i was barely getting through the day. got a dietitian, so i could eat better. that didn't help either. after that i was convinced i had a brain tumor, so i did an MRI, also brain wave lengths tests, all came out perfectly fine. my father is a surgeon btw. he works with cancer patients all the time, and he is convinced that i am super healthy, for the first tiime iin my life. but i felt like my life was ending. still am. can't do anything. cant work. they diagnosed me with an anxiety and depression disorder, gave me pills that i have been taking for a year now, that do nothing for me, just make me want to sleep. i sleep for 12 hours and still wake up in a daze, not knowing where i am. thyroid also checked, everything was fine. i have better days, but days like today when i feel more out of touch than ever i feel like i am going crazy. i fear that i am gonna die, but everyone tells me its maybe deprersonalization or derealization, but i know myself, and something happened to me after that surgery. i did in turkey so i had no pre op or post op. just did it and went home. and starved myself. and now i feel like my life is ending. sorry for the long post.
  12. Hi there! Had my surgery 10/6, the few days were rough. I did not any pain mediation home. I'm feeling great but sure do miss coffee with sugar. My biggest challenge is drinking enough water. It's difficult to drink every 15 minutes. Anyone interested in being part of buddy support group that meets via zoom or Fbook? Stay the course, follow the plan and take Vitamins!!
  13. I was sleeved Oct 2013 & lost 90lbs (gained back 20 lbs) but never got to goal weight or close. I really committed to changing my lifestyle; exercising (running & weight lifting) & used myfitness pal to log food. I felt great & looked great. Then, life unraveled. In 2016 found out my husband of 20yrs was cheating on me, I realized he was an alcoholic & we divorced, I was laid off from my job & then diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. My kids were 10 & 12 at the time & I had no family to help me (both parents deceased & brother lives 3hrs away by plane). I went through 9hr surgery to remove a foot of my colon & then 7 mos of chemo & steroids. I put on 60lbs during chemo & have not been able to lose it. I had a bad fall after last chemo treatment from neuropathy in feet. I have so much pain in my knees I can’t run. Don’t know if all due to excess weight, arthritis (I’m 54), chemo, menopause? I finished my ins requirements for a revision & scheduling revision to bypass is next. But, I am so hard on myself & questioning if it will work and if I shouldn’t be messing with my body especially surviving cancer? I have regained all my weight &depressed. I hate the way I look & struggle with trying to be happy I am alive after cancer. I have heard weight loss is slower after revision. Is that always the case? Anyone else have cancer after wls & regained and had revision? I feel lost. I miss the adrenaline I used to get from working out.
  14. Omg I wished you posted this before my surgery on 11/8. I did a week of liver shrinking diet and loss 15 lbs. Completed all the necessary procedures too and went to my surgery appointment. However….. I was on time but have been having second thoughts the night before and I even had a consultation with my therapist friend (free counseling session 😂) I spent at least 2 hours with my friend and talked about my reservations. She even advised me to cancel or reschedule because of my reservations. I had my consultation with my surgeon on 10/11 and the surgery date on 11/8 was offered. Off course I took it cos I’m overwhelmed but in reality I should have waited for more time but what’s my excuse? Food relationship and the holiday parties and meals. However, after getting my behavioral health evaluation and preop, I was ready. I was so happy with the result of the liver shrinking diet cos in my head look, I can do it without the surgery but I only did the diet because I have a goal date which is the surgery date. I even chatted with my parents about my decision. My dad didn’t want me to get the surgery but my mom was encouraging since she knows how many times I failed doing different diet and exercise program after program. So, day of surgery came. I checked in 30 minutes earlier and I was sent to pre-surgery department. My check in appointment was at 9:00 and surgery at 11:00. I changed to my hospital gown and got comfortable. It’s funny that every commercial was Taco Bell. However, each time I checked the clock I was panicking inside. My surgeon and his team was late and my surgery was pushed until 1:00 PM. In my head, it’s my chance to cancel it and the universe was telling me to cancel it. I wished I listened to the voice inside me but I’m glad I didn’t. I’m glad I did the surgery because I don’t trust myself and if I canceled, I will probably go back to my unhealthy lifestyle. Today is my day 21 post opt and I lose another 20 lbs. It’s totally life changing and tracking my intakes help. I found myself now drinking more water a day to stay hydrated and planning more my meals. I don’t see my surgery as an excuse for weight loss but a tool to help me get back to the healthy side.
  15. I have PCOS and had bariatric surgery 2nd september, from 125kg im now 98 and have just found out im pregnant! Any ladies on here experienced the same thing? ive had alot of sickness since my op and i think this has counteracted my contraception pill with everything else going on i didnt even think about that til i missed my period. November Surgery Buddies!!!

It's easy. I started today - had my surgery 11 days ago. I made a Sunday roast and then just took the meat (lamb - OMG the tastiest meat EVER) and some of the veg (carrot, parsnip, cauli), a little gravy and a lot of water and stick blended it and it went completely smooth. Almost moussy actually. It was gorgeous after 10 days of shakes and thick liquids. And best of all, whereas I could sip a shake literally all day, six teaspoons of this puree and I was full. And I'm still full an hour later. I think this is gonna work out lads. So happy.
  18. It really depends on how it's effecting you. Are your symptoms bad? Or are you asymptomatic? Quarantine is usually 10-14 days so if your surgery is 16 days away... as long as your symptoms aren't that bad or you're asymptomatic I don't see why you'd have to delay it. But yeah, definitely get the surgeons impute on what they think.
  19. I’m on day 3 (of 10) of mine and I’m totally with you! I went for a walk with my friend and was in pain and exhausted after. I have a low level headache almost nonstop. I’m a little worried about functioning at work next week. And all I can think about is food- real food, not jello and protein shakes!
  20. I'm 2.5 months out from VSG. Per my NUT's guidance, I'm eating 1000-1400 cal a day, and balanced between protein, carbs, and fat. (About 120P/120C/55F per day.) I find that by 7:30 or 8:00 p.m., I am just done for the day. No energy to do anything. No laundry folding, no cleaning, no nothing, I just need to sit down and rest, and I'm usually in bed by 10:00 p.m. (also unusual). I had my bloods done by my PCP, at my request. Everything is fine, except my iron-binding capacity is just south of the low end of the reference range (but my iron itself is fine). No issues with B12, calcium, or D. I'm very active, but not any more active than I was four weeks ago. Any ideas what's going on here?

    Robotic surgery

I had my surgery on 11/01. My surgeon used the robotic for my surgery I have 6 incisions. According to the nurses they told me my arms were ace bandaged to my sides. My legs were belted on the operating bed. I do know I so much scar tissue that my surgeon had to use the robotic for removal. My surgeon told me that the scar tissue was on my liver and it was thick it took an hour and half to remove using the robotic. Also scar tissue was wrapped around my stomach like a rope he wasn’t sure my gastric sleeve could be done. He found a piece of residual band in bedded underneath my stomach from when I had the Lapband in 2008. It was removed in 2012 as it had eroded. There was huge amount of scar tissue on the right outer stomach wall which took considerable amount of time to remove. He removed some scar tissue from my bowels as well. My surgery originally was to be 2 hours ended up taking 4 hours. My surgeon said my surgery was very tough due to the amount of scar tissue imbedded. He said it appears much of the scar tissues was most like from the years of having endometriosis removed when I had my hysterectomy years ago. He also said it looked as if the tissues wasn’t removed properly which was what caused the damaging build up I had when he was doing my gastric sleeve. After my surgery my shoulders hurt bad and the back of my neck which I ended up with a migraine. My left leg had a bruise on the middle of the calf. That is my leg I have problems with. My left leg is easily bruised. Due to my arms bandage to my sides from surgery they were a little sore but not bad. It felt like I just banged up against the doorway. I can’t understand why your arms would be tied above your head. It seems bizarre. Did you as your doctor why they did that and what the reason was?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hang in there.. Focus on your protein and water intake, up your exercise as much as you can (within the limits set by your Dr.).. if you are on puree phase, make sure the portions are the correct size/volume... I lost like 3 lbs by the time I got back from the hospital.. but after that... the weight remained constant for 10-12 days.. and then it started coming off.

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?

I had my surgery 11/01. It’s interesting how your psych evaluation lasted only about 5 minutes. I don’t how they can determine anything with that. However, I’m sure you’re ready to handle your surgery as they wouldn’t have passed you through. When I had my telehealth psych evaluation at lasted the whole entire hour. Plus they asked me if I have an outside therapist that works with me due to history of mental health. I told them I do. The psychiatrist also asked me if my therapist can work with me about what triggers me to eat the bad foods. I told her yes and that my therapist has been working with me since I started the program. So I was lucky to have my outside therapist that works with me on my mental health issues and helps me figure out what triggers I need to deal with so I don’t end up back to eating the bad foods. I will be having a second psych evaluation after my 3 month follow up with my doctor. Best wishes with your upcoming surgery.

    Holidays and weight gain

Lessons learned for me this first holiday with family on a road trip- don’t forget the Miralax!! Been gone 7 days on the road and by day 3 I was miserable! I’m not even kidding, I haven’t used it in months as I am 10 months post op but I sure needed it. Almost 3k miles driven, a lot of sitting and not as much water as needed to avoid too many potty breaks, will definitely do the next road trip differently by drinking more water, walking around more and using Miralax. Also my tailbone cushion saved me too!
