Have you lost as much and as quickly as you thought you would after surgery?
Creekimp13 replied to jrsone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
People have a lot of weird misconceptions about how fast they'll lose weight and how much weight they'll lose after weight loss surgery. Would be nice if the seminars did a better job of presenting this information factually up front. Mine did, but it seems like a lot of folks feel mislead when they're a few months out. Statistically, most people will lose on one side or the other of about 60% of their excess weight in 18 months. This is the average result. Most people will maintain a 55% of excess weight weight loss three years after surgery...which beats the hell out of the results of conventional dieting. Some people will hit goal and lose 100% of their excess weight....which is awesome! Some people will never reach a 50% loss of excess weight and end up feeling defeated. Obviously, if you work hard, follow your diet, follow a good exercise program and have good support...your odds of reaching goal go up. The biggest part is compliance, for sure. But there's also a biological component. Diabetics have a tougher time. Metabolic syndrome folks have a tougher time. Older folks have a tougher time. PCOD folks have a tougher time. Mental health issues can make things harder. Certain necessary medications can make things harder. People with limited mobility have a tougher time. Youth helps. Good general health helps. A good support system helps. No two people have the same experience with this wild ride. -
I feel fine. There is still a little bit of pain more on my left side than my right side. I went to school for 30 minutes yesterday and an hour today. I do get tired very fast, should I be worried?

Just got my bloodwork results back from my doctor...and this is only 1 month post surgery...but my numbers have improved big time! Total Cholesterol was 194, is now 169 (ideal is below 200) LDL was 113, is now 107 (ideal is below 100) Triglycerides was 190, is now 99 (below 150 is ideal) HDL was 43, is now 42 (THIS NEEDS TO GET BETTER, Above 60 is ideal) Fasting sugars were 105, are now 81 (YAHOO! My risk for diabetes has gone down substantially) So now I just have to get that HDL above 60, my LDL a few more points down below 99, and keep working to get my fasting sugars a bit lower and I'll be in pretty good shape. But my doctor told me beforehand not to expect much since it's only a month out from surgery. That I should see a great improvement in 3-6 months from now. So I'm pretty stoked that they are as good as they are already. My genetic risk for diabetes and heart disease is big, so I'm very happy to get into healthy ranges. Weight is down 53 pounds...another 30-35 to go to reach my goal. As I now say...onward and DOWNWARD! -
Hi, im 5 weeks post op and ive been feeling hungry since surgery. I was told while in the hospital that I would still feel hungry. Noat Im able to eat real food as I like to call it, lol I feel hungry more often. Like I eat and an hour late "im hungry" If im busy its no big deal, I just drink Water to fill my stomach up..but at night while im laying bed watching tv and my stomach growls what do you do? Well i either ignore it, or I eat a sugar free popsicle or some sugar free pudding. If you are truly hungry you have to feed yourself. You just dont have to feed yourself High fat High Calorie foods and you dont have to eat but a bite or two to feel satsfied. I would ask are you eating enough during the day. Yes you said 3x a day plus 2 Snacks. But what are yur eating? how much? how many caloried are getting? are you eating HEALTHY fats? Heathly fats and Healthy Carbs are what keeps us from feeling hungry. Also, are you drinking liquids righ after eating? they say 30 min so that the liquid doesnt empty our stomach so fast so we stay fuller longer. If you dont track you intake yet,,try getting an app. I use sparkpeople.com but ther are plenty out there to choose. I record EVERYTHING i put in my mouth. so I know how much protien i ate, how many cards, how much fat, sodium, etc.... and calories...if you dont eat enough calories your body will go into starvation mode... Stay focused and take care of yourself....

Yes some surgeons use it to decompress the stomach. It may possibly hooked up to light intermittent suction on the wall. It won't hurt and will be taped to your cheek then safety pinned to your gown. Its much easier to insert during surgery than after. It's a little old school but nothing to worry about.

For me, filling up too fast would make me sick! My first (last) fill was 1.5 to the 1.5 already in there from surgery (10cc band) and I swelled up with it. I barely consumed anything for almost a day and half til I felt better and finally had dinner 2 nights later. I go again on Tuesday for my 2nd fill and I know what to do now to help myself. Doc recommends full food after his fills but I just can't do it.

Preop protein shake-Premier Protein Shake from Costco-Chocolate is good Iron pill- Sundown Naturals Perfect Iron-I ordered mine on Amazon. It's carbonyl iron and doesn't upset my stomach Multivitamin- Centrum Chewables-Eat something, chew and swallow the vitamin, eat some more. I can't take them on an empty stomach but "sandwiching" between food works. Vitamin d- Nature Made 1000 I.U. I take one each day. Calcium-ReViva Calcium Citrate liquid from Costco.com. 1 Tbsp = 500 mg. However, too much gives you the runs, so I am still looking for a chewable that's tolerable. Vitacost.com is not too expensive but really sweet. I chew them up with two almonds at the same time and that helps to cut the sweetness. I tried the BA Chocolate chewables and they are disgusting. B-12- Sublingual, 2500 mcg. twice a week. Any kind is fine, I buy mine from Walmart as they dissolve fast. Hope this helps. -

The mind is slow to get the message. We all have set backs. Right now I am at 22 months, and have just determined I am eating way to much, way to fast. Have an appointment for a fill coming up shortly. Listen to your body, and I agree with Missy, never eat until you feel full. Look for early signals. I get a sniffly nose, or tiny hiccup as I reach my limit. Good luck to you. You will get the hang of it. Remember we are all changing years of bad habits. -
Question For Vet Sleevers...
Pookeyism replied to Curvy Girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are looking for things to be "normal", let me remind you a normal tummy is not what you want! The tummy (I call mine George) will always be a factor in your life. You will be able to eat a bit more, but you should always chew your food extremely well, always eat a bit less than full. The goal is to maintain your sleeve, thus allowing it to help you maintain the new you. I have found I cannot rely on the pleasure of food anymore. It is just not worth it. I have NO fast food, NO trans fat, NO refined sugar. I don't treat myself with food. It just seems to encourage old habits. You may differ. I am 9 months out and for me, myself, this is what I have decided to do - because I want to be here two years out, 9 years out... I really encourage the avoidance of liquids before and after a meal. I have talked with other vets that are very confident that they can eat a bit more now, that it is not doing anything - but when you pin them down, they have unaccounted for pain and such that often follows a day where they had the "more" they are talking about, and I noticed it myself a couple of times during maintenence. So for me: measured portions yes, still the baby spoon at home, no refined sugar no soda no fast food no fried food no white Pasta I just never put all of what I could on my tummy, I always leave a little room. popcicles are good for my tummy aches head hunger is less, but I always take caution, mind my triggers I still burp I find, 100% of the time, hunger that follows within 2 hours or so after eating, is resolved with antacids. I can: Have a bit of honey in my tea eat anything reasonable, enough to enjoy the sensation of nurishment run again fight again (swords) survive the zombie hoards (less than 2 months away) climb trees put off knee surgery indefinitely throw away my type 2 diabeties meds take way less ibuphrophin see how that goes? lol, better than overeating ever was, for whatever reason. -
:thumbdown:I am on day 8 of my pre-op diet which consists of 5 Opti-Fast shakes per day. I can have sugar free jello and popsicles. I can also have any zero calorie no carb drinks. I am only allowed 1 bouillon a day if i feel lightheaded or sick. Days 2 and 3 of the diet consisted of horrible headaches and sever weakness. I am drinking plenty of water. It seems as though the hunger is gettign worse though. Any suggestions or comments? I have 7 days until surgery and FOOD IS NOT AN OPTION.

No More Protein Shakes/smoothies?
joatsaint replied to susan6161's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc wanted me off shakes and onto real foods as fast as possible - he explained that real food has lots of macronutrients that you don't get from shakes, since the processing destroys or reduces the nutrient content of food. -
I was banded July 9th. I have lost about 15 pounds. I can tell I am loosing inches, but it's pretty depressing when the scales want move. I can eat pretty much anything also. I just have to remember to eat slowly and in small portions. I really don't get enough protein though, it takes so long to chew it up good and then I get full really fast on meat. I try to eat eggs often. and also cheese. I have not been exercising. I have really bad joints but that's no excuse, I need some motivation. But I don't think they sell that in a bottle. Keep me posted. We were on vacation for several weeks and I had so much catching up to do at work I haven't been visiting the forum.

Is it normal to vomit sometimes?
hubbachubba replied to a_jap21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been sick 3 or 4 times in 5 weeks. I am not eating anything bad, I have mashed vegies one of the days. I think that I ate them to fast, thats all I can put it down to. 5 weeks out and I am doing two Opti a day and frozen yogurt ice block for dinner. My Doc just said to eat slow and watch the amount. -
6 days post op sleeve
lulumomof2 replied to lulumomof2's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Oh I feel the pain of the broth. It's so nasty with no flavor lol It could be the sodium? Are you drinking enough water through the day? I tried to always have water and little sips here and there. I do slim fast shakes and naked fruit juice (just as a treat) or peppermint decaf tea and I try to walk as much I can. -

Oh, I understand. I'm a pastry chef. You know how bad it sucks to have people looking at your career and lifestyle and saying, "Well no WONDER she's fat!" But the stuff I make is for other people and clients. I haven't made myself fat from my own baking--in fact, I barely have a sweet tooth anymore because I'm always wrist-deep in dough and batter and chocolate. You DO get sick of it after a while. It's binging on fast food and pizza and convenience foods that have done the damage. But nobody believes that, and I've had friends acctually tell me that I have no hope of ever being thin if I don't change my career. ::sigh:: So no, I have NO intention of making my lapband procedure public knowledge. Not gonna happen.

As @AjaSlimtone said, your starting weight is quite low, so you will not be able to lose fast, like people who start at 300 or 400 lbs. Just follow your surgery center's instructions to the letter and trust in the process. Make sure you're getting your fluids and protein. You got this!
-
You have to go until your heart rate reaches a certain point. I assume if you're not used to exercising that should not be very fast for you. I was doing elliptical for years so it takes more to get my HR high, so mine was almost at a run somewhat and at a big incline. The moment my HR reached the point the girl asked if I wanted to stop and I was like YES.

Surgery date: August 1, 2016! Anyone else?!
plates replied to asolanom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had 8/1 surgery date also. Yesterday was by far the worst for pain. Today was better, I even ventured out in public for a brief time. Now my main annoyance is my midsection feels tight and I'm fast walking to the bathroom at least every 2-4 hours. Hope that's not a forever side effect. Thanks Paula- but they already have all those letters. They were in the orginal documents. Plus receipts from gyms & other diet centers. All 27 attempts fully documented except for diets like cabbage soup & slim fast ext... I'll keep trying for a bit but thanI don't think I will wait long & will have to be self-pay. Its to tough emotionally to be on hold for me. -
I was sleeved on 04/16 and the PA was also not positive about my weight loss. However, I am losing again now because I went to Sams and brought the Premier Shakes and protein bars. I got the generic Prilosec also. I get in at least 40 oz of fluids daily and try some type of exercise everyday. No one told me my body would go into shock and the scale would just stop moving. I am also tracking what I eat on my fitness pal to ensure I am not getting in more than 800 cals a day. The cals add up fast because the protein bar is 290 cals but it also provides 30 gms of protein. It is good when I get home and start to feel hungry. I decided to only use the bars on occassion since they have so many calories. The weight loss is slow but I am still losing and not gaining. At one point I was gaining according to the scale. I knew then I had to make some changes. So I increased my fluids and proteins. We made the decision to do this and we have to press past all the obstacles set in our way. Before surgery I would starve myself, I still not lose. Now I can track what I put in my mouth (which thanks to the sleeve is a small amount at a time) eating protein first and do not eat and drink at the same time. I mostly eat protein now. I try to stay away from the carbs. (But today I had homemade spaghetti, with ground meat and chicken sausage. I ate approx. a half cup. Now I will not eat that everyday). If we know we are following the rules, we have to believe that we will be successful. My clothes are getting looser.
