  1. So exciting!@lmichelle310, where is your family from? I ask because I'm Brazilian and we also use smoked meats to season our beans. My mom (who is awesome and has been cooking for me during the VSG process) adapted her recipes and I found that her vegetarian beans still tasted delicious (I'm still in liquids for another week but she makes a mean bean soup with it). One thing I struggle with being from a different culture is not knowing which of the foods I eat will be allowed going forward since my dr's team has no idea what they are. Do you have that problem?
  2. There is a thread or two here from vegetarian sleevers about how they get in their Protein. You should really be concentrating on the protein and liquids, then worry about fats or carbs, although my doctor suggests that fried foods be a very limited part of my diet. Cottage cheese is an excellent source of protein and you should eat whichever one works for you. Check the protein content of the low-fat vs. regular versions and choose the one that is higher in protein/ Also, I can usually eat a chicken leg and thigh if I dont eat any veggies. I'm a little over 5 months out, if that gives you any idea. Very early post-op, I couldnt eat a full 4 oz chicken breast. It would make at least two meals for me, sometimes 3. Good luck on your journey!!
  3. Hi, I will be starting solid food in 2 weeks (YAY!). And I need your valued opinion on some stuff. I want to try some food but I want to know if I'll get in the required amount of Proteins with these items. 1) Many have commented that they eat cottage cheese for Protein. I love cottage cheese but I'm a bit skeptical about it because of the fat content. I know there are some low-fat brands but I dont get many options in India. So, do you think it is advisable to have regular cottage cheese? How many grams of protein do you think it has in, say, 3 one inch cubes (coz that is what I think I can handle for a day with my sleeve LOL) 2) I rarely eat non-vegetarian food. I only take eggs regularly. So I'm out of touch eating chicken though I used to LOVE it in my school days. I'm planning to start eating chicken when I start solid food. Now, I was wondering how many pieces I'll be able to eat for a meal and how much protein I'll get from it. I know everyone has a diff capacity but I just want to get a rough idea. 3) Some say they eat peanuts, roasted soybeans etc. I'm again skeptical about these because of the fats. Your opinion pls... I welcome any other suggestions from you. I want to have a protein rich diet when I start the solid phase coz I haven't really been able to get as much protein as required till now. Though I'm making sure my food is low carb and low calories, I havent been concentrating on proteins. I just take 1 protein mix a day (20 gms protein), 2 egg whites (6.5 gms protein), lentils and pulses 2 times daily (10 gms protein), milk twice daily (3 gms protein). I barely get in 40 gms of proteins a day. Though I dont have any complications I really dont want to mess up because of my carelessness. PS: What do you think is the healthy amount of fat and carbs that I can take in a day?

    any vegans or vegetarians?

I eat a lot of veges, I love my meat, but it is still possible to get in all your protein and vitamins in with a band. I think most vegetarian food is band friends other than noodles and rice, some bandsters have problems with those.
  5. what's on ur menu? just wondering if a vegan or vegetarian menu is healthy with a lapband.
  6. Hi, I am almost at week 3 and I really want a gym partner. I use LA Fitness so I can go to any LA Fitness in AZ I go to two one by my work in Paradise Valley and the other near the Biltmore. Also I rollerblade in Scottsdale bike paths at night (pre surgery anyway) this is so much fun and a great workout. Also Yoga is the best thing for my body.I have not done any Yoga in weeks! I am so scared of hurting my belly. About me. I am a young 31, alternative, vegetarian, no kids, animal lover, very openminded to all types of people (hopefully you are too) and I am aiming to lose 80+ pounds. I have an intermediate fitness level. Thanks, Sarah
  7. Has anyone tried going "Vegan"?. this is the term used for vegetarian diet. I try it for a week and gained 4 ponds ! Crazy..! Has anyone else try this. it is basically no meat and lots of grain, fruits and vegetable. It's not hard to do , but it is not being effective for me ...Hum.......B4U
  8. I decided to go vegetarian (again). 3 years ago before I gained almost 100lbs I was a vegetarian. I felt light, healthy and energized back then. I always wanted to go back to it but couldn't find the willpower. Thanks to having the VSG I've been without meat since surgery & feel amazing! Everyone's journey is their own & I'm certainly not encouraging or saying my way is the best way at all. However I would like to have support and wanted to share with my bariatricpal family ! If anyone else is looking to do the same (after much research) or already may be a veg please connect so we can share recipes and such. I'll keep you all posted on my journey. I Have Accepted That My Tummy

You can get your protein in through plant based means so long as you're careful. Try going vegetarian for a while until you're further out and your sleeve is feeling more tolerant.

    Still being judged after death

This reminds me of another story. Dr. Robert Adkins introduced the world to low carb diets. One day he slipped and fell on the ice injuring his head. That sent him to the hospital in a coma for which he never recovered. His body was pumped full of fluids (like ours during surgery) and when he finally died, he weighed significantly more than when he entered the hospital. A vegetarian advocacy group called Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) surreptitiously obtained a copy of his private medical records and used it to attack a dead man, Dr. Adkins and the Adkin's diet. [They then apparently made false claims that he was obese at the time of his death, that his diet didn't work and that he died of a heart attack.] That's low! http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/health/2004-02-10-atkins-health_x.htm
  11. Is their any vegetarian bandsters out there. My family has decided to drastically cut meat from our diets. We still eat cheese- but no meat. I am wondering how this lifestyle works with lapband. I know my dr pushes protein. I know I can supplement with protein drinks...
  12. Meat just isn't really agreeing with me and right now I'm eating mostly beans, cheese, Greek yogurt. Any vegetarians that can give me an idea of how they've been doing since surgery. I'm 2 months post-op.

Oh Gross! Hide the chicken from your pets.

A few years ago, I had invited guests for Sunday dinner - roast beef and all the trimmings. Just as the guests were arriving, I removed the roast from the oven to let it 'rest'. I sat it on the counter, and went to greet my guests. After the hello/how are you stuff, I returned to the kitchen to get the wine. I thought something was odd but couldn't quite figure it out. Returned to the guests, had our wine, and then we all traipsed to the kitchen so that I could finish preparing the meal. It was then I noticed there was no meat resting on a platter. I thought, 'You are losing it, girl. It is still in the oven'. Nope, not in the oven, not on the counter, not in the sink. Still not clueing in, I thought maybe I have really lost my mind, and it is in the dishwasher. Nope. Then and only then did I notice that my 100 lb Lab was no where to be seen. I went looking and found him in his kennel licking his lips.... You just gotta laugh! We had a vegetarian dinner.
  15. Textured Vegetable Proteins (TVP) is a vegetarian substitute for meat that's generally made from soy flour. www.livestrong.com/article/270264-what-is-textured-vegetable-protein-made-from
  16. Hello Everyone, I am new to the forum!! I have decided to change my life by starting the lap band journey!!! My idea started when one of my co-workers started losing weight and I asked him what his secret was and he presented me with this procedure. Like all of you, I have struggled for over 10 years to lose this extra weight. I have gone as far as becoming a strict vegetarian and excluding junk food from my diet. I have even acquired my taste to like Tofu! I am currently waiting to attend my first lap band seminar which is Oct. 16th but it seems like eternity. I have become depressed because I have low self-esteem and feel like I will never feel good in my body again. I am hoping to learn a lot from this lap band family and can only hope that I am approved for this operation by my insurance company. I am so ready for this because my life no longer revolves around food, my only issue is the hunger because I feel this does not let me become successful in my weight loss journey! Thank you very much!!
  17. Hey everyone! Hope you all are doing great post op. I am 6 weeks post op and doing well so far. Except I am really bad in having my protein shakes. I'm supposed to have 1 scoop everyday but I probably have it just thrice a week???? I've lost a total of 24 lbs. wondering if that's ok and will the amount of protein I take it, affect my weight loss? I'm a vegetarian and have beans, lentils etc but there's only this much I can have of it. Should I be losing more? I haven't lost any weight since 10 days???? Suggestions welcome

Anita, I'm also not a big red meat person although it's supposed to be harder to eat after surgery. As far as eggs and dairy, do you not like the taste? I've never been a huge fan of greek yogurt but post-surgery I love it. I'm also eating a lot of legumes. I make salads with different types of Beans and then add other veggies for flavor. In additional to chicken I'm also eating turkey and ham. You should look for a recipe books for either WLS or vegetarians, also search recipes above for options. I'm sure you'll do fine and who knows, maybe your taste buds will change after surgery, many peoples do.
  20. Hi there! I am 2 weeks out and I eat the Rosarita canned refried beans-Vegetarian, soft tofu, cottage cheese, mashed avocado, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, cream of wheat. My doctor told me that as long as it's baby food consistency...i mash the heck out of it! LOL...I also have yogurt. You can add banana and other fruits to the blender and add to your shakes or yogurt. Oh yeah SF popsicals. I hope this helps some.

There are many vegetarians who are successful sleevers so you can definitely make this work, especially as you eat chicken. There are tons of chicken products for variety, ground, chicken sausage, turkey Jerky and bacon if you eat other poultry, etc. Your job will be to find Protein rich foods you love. Nuts, Beans, turkey, pork?, tofu, cheese?... I urge you to explore fish or crab, because you never know.. You'll be fine with a little more effort than the average meat eater.

    Vegetarian Protein

I'm wanting to be at least vegetarian at this point, but need some help getting started. I don't care for processed food, so I'm hesitant about vege burgers and the like, but I guess I'll need them for the Protein. The protein is what has me stumped because I don't like Beans. How does this sound for a start, and please rip it apart if it isn't a good plan: Breakfast: Protein shake sweetened with Stevia and fruit Lunch: Veges and ? dinner Veges and ? See where I'm stuck?
  23. My family loves beans, made frijoles refritos last weekend and navy bean Soup is scheduled for this weekend. I have both Cous Cous and Quinoa in the pantry, although I haven't tried the quinoa yet. I'm not in any danger of becoming a vegetarian, but meat consumption has definitely been reduced.

    Crackers?

di·et1 ˈdī-it/ noun 1. the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. "a vegetarian diet" synonyms: selection of food, food, foodstuffs; More a regular occupation or series of activities in which one participates. "a healthy diet of classical music" Seems like alot of us obese and former obese people get really caught up on the word diet....and then reject anything associated with it. That can be detrimental. Just because we've all failed at "diets" doesn't mean that word means only one thing.
  25. I found some great soup from a Chinese takeout restaurant. I'm a vegetarian so I got the vegetable soup and just ate the broth but if you like any of those like wonton or egg drop that might help with you fluids. The first night I tried the soup I had about 2 1/2-3 cups and it was the most Fluid I had in a while. It was great! Just remember it is packed with sodium so it's probably not a good idea to have that much in one day. When i have some now I limit it to about 2 cups at the most otherwise I just feel even more thirsty. I'm almost 7 weeks out and still struggle EVERY day to get my liquid in, I only get about 20-30oz. I'm thirsty all the time I just can't drink much no matter how much I sip sip sip.
