    Quantity of food

Some vegetarians do eat a lot of processed foods, which sadly can make for obese vegetarians. I didn’t get to this thread because I made the best of decisions but am definitely taking this second chance at life to make better choices.

    Quantity of food

Sadly, most vegetarians I know are quite obese. It's a noble concept, but not really that healthy compared to a balanced diet. I'm staying away from anything with a face
  4. Here's something I threw together that was approved for my weeks 4-6 after surgery that was pretty delish. I'm calling it "Bariatric Lasagna". 1/2 cup soft cooked macaroni 1/2 cup ricotta cheese 1/2 cup cottage cheese 1/4 no sugar added spaghetti sauce Mix all ingredients. top with some mozzarella and parmesan cheese. Microwave until warm and cheese is melted. Makes about 4 half cup servings. I guess if you aren't vegetarian you could add some hamburger if you are allowed it.
  5. I thought it might be fun to tell some stories that could have ended in disaster, but that ended up being successful, or at least good learning experiences. I'll start. My husband and I went to an outdoor evening wedding today. Yes, it is Arizona, but it was still chilly. I was FREEZING! I had on a long dress, thick stockings, a scarf, a fleece vest and a long wool coat over that, but I got so cold waiting to go into the reception that my teeth were chattering. I had to actually go into the car and get the heater going so I could warm up. This part of weight loss is definitely NOT pleasant - in fact it is downright miserable. But then we got into the reception and meal. Wouldn't you know, there was not a single thing I could eat except some limpish salad greens that were slightly bitter and not real fresh. I cannot eat gluten or dairy. These are not uncommon problems, and the the venue actually had gluten free options - but they all had cheese and milk or butter! And the delicious looking stuffed acorn squash vegetarian dish had wheat! And to boot, I forgot to bring the protein drink I had set out to take! So i nibbled the bad tasting, dry salad greens until I just couldn't do it anymore. There was no tea or decaf coffee, but I did get the kitchen to bring me a cup of plain hot water to sip. By the time we got home I was really, really hungry. But...... on the way home, I planned out a quick meal from some left overs and popped that into the microwave right away. I did eat a spoon full of peanut butter while I was waiting for the meal to heat up. But I managed to stay on plan - at least all the food I ate were "plan" foods - not just raiding the pantry for whatever I could grab. I feel the end result was a success, but a very high risk situation, for sure. What I learned for next time: TAKE THE PROTEIN DRINK, AND a baggie of apple slices/nuts, AND a protein bar. I mistakenly thought there were be SOMETHING I could eat, but didn't fully plan on NOTHING to eat. All three of the items (drink, apple/nut baggie, and protein bar) could have fit in my purse. The evening would have been more enjoyable and I would not have been so ravenous when I got home. AND I would not have eaten later that I would have liked. Unfortunately, there is nothing I could have done about being so cold. There were girls in short dresses and bare legs, and I was bundled up like an Eskimo. I read that this will pass in 18-24 months. I sure hope so.
  6. Even before my surgery I've had to cook two meals--I'm a vegetarian and hubby is a carnivore. I've gotten to be a very good short order cook! Now it's easier-anything I cook for myself can be divided and frozen into 4 or 5 meals so I just have to zap it while I cook for DH.

    Soft food stage

Refried beans! Ricotta cheese or cottage cheese drizzled with no sugar added spaghetti sauce. Hummus. When you scramble your egg pour a bit of pureed salsa on them. I can eat anything now but those are still my go-to foods because I'm a vegetarian.

    When ur sick

I drink Ensure max, 30 g. of protein and had 2 a day at 3 weeks out. I put it on ice and sip it all day. You have to get in protein it is imperative. I read on this site about a woman that didn't and she ended up in the hospital. I didn't like the drink but saw it as medicine. It would sometimes take over an hour to get it down. Then I did cream of chicken soup for my mid-day meal. I love sweet tea so I replaced it with caffeine-free tea with a twist of lemon. I also tricked my mind with chewable vitamins and called them my treats. I am concerned that you are not getting protein, they have vegetarian protein powder a plant-based protein that you could mix in warm soup. You need to ask your doctor or dietician for some help.
  9. I got VSG on 12/17, so not two weeks just yet. I have had little to no problems. Sent home from the hospital a day early due to no need for pain meds and I was walking a ton. I did have two days at home where all I did was sleep on and off all day. By 12/23 I felt back to normal and was able to sleep and walk a few miles each day. I know I am lucky after reading through other's posts. My concern is what to eat. My doctor's office told me anything soft enough to cut with the side of a fork. I am vegetarian so meat is out. I am craving salads but they said not until month 2 at the earliest. Currently I am getting about 500 cal per day due to the protein shakes. Only a few bites of homemade runny refried beans and ricotta bake. Just cleaned out my closet for the second time. I lost 50 lbs prior to surgery and got rid of many clothes but more needed to go. I have also pulled out the sewing machine to help get a little life out of some of my shirts and skirts.

    Vegetarian cookbook recommendations

I've looked at the reviews for a lot of the popular Whole Food Plant Based books, and many of them fall short in different ways. However..... I am absolutely in LOVE with a magazine I just bought: "Forks over Knives" "63 tasty, healthy recipes." It says that it is on display until 3/6/2020. I think I bought it in a grocery store or maybe even WalMart. The color photos are great, the recipes are really good, the ingredients are not too exotic, and it has a great variety. I am making a new dish every day from this magazine. (The actual Forks over Knives Cookbook you can buy on Amazon had some negative reviews that seemed pretty valid.) But this magazine is great. I will definitely buy the next issue as well. I am gluten free and dairy free, as well, and I find that a lot of vegetarian cookbooks/recipes just don't work for me. Plus, there is the bariatric angle. This magazine is chock full of very adaptable recipes. I can substitute GF ingredients quite easily, and for low carb, you just need to avoid the pasta recipes. (I don't worry about the pasta or grains anymore, as I am in maintenance and have a hard enough time keeping my weight on right now. )There are no macros listed, as WFPB relies on the overall, healthy nutritional value of the food, rather than calculating macros. I do, however, calculate the calories and protein in each recipe I make, just to give me the confidence that I am on track bari wise. Anyway, pick up an issue. Price was $9.99 and worth every penny. You could probably also get it online. The sub title is "Winter's Best Soups" and has a picture of a bowl of soup on the cover.
  11. Anyone have recommendations for vegetarian Bariatric cookbooks? Thanks in advance!

    Going Vegan... Is It Possible?

@KennyM 17 years out. You have done fantastic. Yes, vegan can be done. Link to the vegetarian/vegan bariatric thread on this site below. It may help to read the past posts. They can answer questions from experience. Vegetarian/vegan 101: https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1101-vegetarian-or-vegan-eating/
  13. I don't have a DS I have a bypass. I'm a vegetarian, NOT a vegan (I use dairy and eggs). So far nothing has bothered me. You probably are already taking B12 supplements, multivitamins and calcium? Getting enough protein might be a challenge for you, especially if you won't use whey isolate. I eat tofu, beans, lentils, eggs, cheese and peanut butter for my protein source. My dietician knows about my food choices and says it can be easily done for a vegetarian. Hopes this helps some.

    Going Vegan... Is It Possible?

This. Is. All. We. Have 😅 I'm joking of course. I hope you find the answers you need. I was vegetarian for 10yrs and vegan for 1 yr prior to WLS. I thought I would be able to easily slip back in but could not during the losing phase because it was time consuming to pair the protein sources properly. Years out it may be much easier however you may see some gains if you reintroduce higher carb items you gave up for a while. But the trade off is presumed optimized health (you'll have to test it out and see for yourself. Be flexible with your expectation as a DS person) My tips: +Pre packaged vegan cuisine is very expensive and essentially the junk food you want to rarely eat. Use as meal starters (like vegan sausage etc) +Avoid as much soy as you can as a male so you don't introduce high levels of plant estrogen hormones. If you must eat verified organic +Pair those proteins properly - can not say that enough. +Make as much as you can from scratch, meal prep especially stews and soups +Do not become a rastapastaterian 😅 +Learn to love lentils, legumes, chia, mushrooms and leafy greens What works mostly for me now is flexitarian (occasional animal protein) or ovo lacto pescaterian (my favorite version very easy to sustain) lifestyle. In the end veganism was unsustainable for me especially the restrictions about honey (I used it in skincare & first aid 😔)

    Food Before and After Photos

LOL my BF caught a pic of me while talking a pic of his food ( I'm rubbing off on him 😅) Hard to see but : All vegetarian meal collaboration 👏 BF heated convenience boxed foods / I customized them 😍- partially homemade eggplant parmesan (Trader Joe's), jazzed up Birdseye protein vegetable mix, crispy fish fillets, homemade cornbread+protein I look miserable because I was 😅 - headache from weather- snowing/ very cold/ etc.
  16. I think to hit protein goals as a vegetarian can be somewhat challenging but not impossible. But you would be eating a crapton of soy, or quorn, or other protein equivalents in addition to a large amount of peas, legumes, beans, etc. And the question is whether you lose weight as quickly when you have a high carb diet. Most do it wrong and also add in high fat which makes weight loss stall. But if your doing super low fat, then many people experience great results. I do have a vegan friend who is 6 months out from WLS and her doc wants her vegan and she is struggling with a low protein/albumin/prealbumin level. So she's not absorbing her soy and pea protein supplements.
  17. I dont think it is but would love to know how to get in 90-100G of protein in vegetarian food in around 600 calories without relying solely on Shakes. IF ANYONE has a breakdown of how they do it, I would follow it to a T because its impossible as far as I can see unless you have all greek yogurt and cottage cheese all day long... And no one should eat an all dairy diet.
  18. Yep, that's it. She has severe GERD. I told her that high carb diet is one of the causes. "I might have to give up my favorite italian pastas?" She needs to give up more than pasta if she wants to have a healthy retirement (she just retired at age 62). She has been vegetarian all her life. So diet is lots of bread, pasta, muffins, bagels, potato casseroles, milk, flavored yogurt, cereal and veggies. Also, has had severe sleep apnea for at least 10 years but refuses to get help because doesn't want to use CPAP. All six of us have small airways. She is the only one not on CPAP. So she hasn't come to the point that her health isn't impotant enough yet to make lifestyle changes. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

Nothing tastes good or the same

Hug's I hope you are at a healthy BMI and not underweight. 13 months out, It must be hard to go into maintenance diet when you have an aversion to meat. Food can be a challenge. Have you tried any bariatric recipes to mix things up? Are you drinking shakes to get protein in? Links to the vegan bariatric forum and the maintenance thread below. It may help with food ideas and to stop weight loss, https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1101-vegetarian-or-vegan-eating/ https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425802-the-maintenance-thread/?tab=comments#comment-4782396
  21. You are two days ahead of me (lap band to RNY) and you are right--it's worse than you expect but I now feel I have turned the corner and just might live...😁 But dang, your surgeon is really aggressive on your post op diet. I'm one week out and overjoyed that I get to eat cottage cheese and watered down mashed taters. I can add meat at week three, but since I'm a vegetarian that's no help. I can eat 1/2 an egg at three weeks, though...and I'm so happy I'm cackling!

    ALWAYS A FAILURE

@Sweetsoul oh how I understand how hard it is. I am 7” shorter than you. I can’t excercise due to chronic illness but I understand avoiding the gym. In all reality exercise does not help with weight loss. Building muscle (which I cannot do) helps burn fat, but I meant to say is I’ve been here before and I fought so hard the first time and it’s hard, I was losing my ability to taste food and I wasn’t getting hungry or full signals but I felt that needs to just want something good, something rich with flavor, strong taste. Never was a snacker either, love salt need salt fo orthostatic intolerance. I tried vegetarian back then too when I couldn’t tolerate meats. I had been doing extreme low carb and calorie counting to lose weight And I finally did but it was extreme under 10 net carbs and very low calorie. but wanted to add more vegetables and vegetarian foods. I was feeling sick. And guess what my weight crept up. Somehow I managed the best I could but always on the brink of gaining until I eventually ended up having drastic weight gain. Maybe because my gallbladder went bad and I wasn’t processing fats but I was eating more greens, kale salads, vegetarian foods and 800 calories yet gaining, no snacking, I felt like a total failure. And I eventually was able to seek out gastric bypass surgery. And have had to recreate my way of eating. I’m finding salt and fats an issue now and vegetables even though I relied heavily on them before I can’t eat much salt and will need to treat my orthostatic intolerance some other way. But you are right in your approach to understanding the problem. I feel you I do. It’s my fear long term so I’m working so hard on what my long term habits need to be especially as things change. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your surgeon and the nutritionist you worked with too and re-evaluate where you are now. I know it’s easier said than done I’m afraid of my surgeon visits after some issues from my own surgery. That they don’t understand my medical issues outside of surgery. But you won’t know unless you take the step. try to find other things to compensate for what salt offers. It’s hard. I hope my response isn’t too forward. To obnoxious. You came pretty far and maintained well and maybe at some point you can take a step further don’t worry. I’m slow in moving forward with food, I have food issues. You are fairly tall too and some people are naturally curvy. I just know you didn’t fail especially because you are giving it good honest evaluation and thought.
