  1. Thanks, that is a good suggestion too. I do have my vitamins checked regularly. My B12 is normal, for which I'm thankful, since I've been a vegetarian most of my adult life (I'm middle-aged). I take a supplement daily. Also, my vit D was low and I'm taking a supplement, though my RD said basically everyone's is low. Mine was really, really low, so I'm hoping I feel better with the supplementation. I started it pre-op and it came up a little.
  2. good to know, FeedyourEye--unfortunately, mushrooms are the one vegetable (or more aptly, fungus) I just can't eat. People think it's weird since so many vegetarians love mushrooms--but I just can't do it...not even the portabellos. However, this is super-interesting, and I am going to tell my husband, who loves mushrooms. Thanks!

    Baked Spaghetti Fake Out

    Non-creative bandster needs menu ideas!

Here's a day I'm happy with: Breakfast: One serving of Special K Protein Plus cereal w/ lactaid nonfat milk. First Mid Meal: Protein enriched sugar free pudding. Lunch: Whole wheat wrap with baby spinach, mustard, lean turkey and low fat swiss. Second Mid Meal: South Beach snack bar (peanut butter crisp flavored). Dinner: Vegetarian refried beans with a little salsa and low fat cheese. Third Mid Meal: Liquid Whey protein supplement (I am told to eat six small meals a day and no extra snacks.) Cereal is good, but I'll warn you that I went through a time where I couldn't really eat it. It would go down ok, but slowly, and you know what happens to cereal in milk... Today I had frosted mini wheats... I dipped them in milk!! meat wraps, with like deli meats, and cheeses, or some cream cheese are good. Beef jerky could be a good mini meal/snack. Unfortunately, except for protien bars, there just isn't a lot of grab and go foods for people trying to eat healthy that you don't have to pre-prepare (which I hate).
  5. i've been having breakfast: high Protein oatmeal with a piece of fruit or egg on toast (i can do some breads!) lunch: 1/2 tuna sandwich or lunch meat or Soup or healthy choice tv dinner or vegetarian lowfat refried Beans, dinner: small piece of meat or fish, 1 cup cooked veges or salad and usally a 1/2 cup of starch like a potatoe or rice (again, I can eat those things). I've also been grilling a lot of veges on the grill and maybe a portabello mushroom (delicious) Snacks are low fat yogurt or cheese stick or few slices of roast beef or peanuts

OMG did I really used to eat that much?

We are all stomach deprived. I can imagine how a vegetarian feels when sitting around eating a meal with carnivores. euuuuu!!! I know that I am one of those people who could consume massive amounts of food and I am so thankful that I am now unable to do that to myself. That being said, I can't hold the non-stomach deprived population to my new standards of eating because they aren't blessed with my body modification. It's like being a member of a secret society
  7. I was just sleeved a week ago yesterday. The reason I am an odd bird is that I am pretty close to my weight and I am a vegetarian. I so far have lost 18 pounds in a week. I have gone back to work and resumed most everything despite the complications that I had(I had a leak during surgery that made them have to tube me and also put a drain in me). My problem now is that I can barely eat anything. I've learned to drink Water, G2, and tea to stay hydrated. I do my b-12 and Multivitamin in the AM on the way to work. But the only things I can mange to eat are Jello(I know not vegetarian but I caved), Ensure, and greek yogurt. Almost every Soup makes me feel sick. I've been told my stomach is extremely small because of the misfire of the stapler which cause the leak (he basically took my stomach from 90% to 85% because of the leak). The fluro looked great so the nurse just told me to keep trudging on(in a nice way) Any advice would be great. I have never thrown up but feel super duper sick anytime I eat anything but the above. Today I managed 5 bites of tomato soup and and to stop, same with cottage cheese which I still can't belive is a full liquid. Thank you!
  8. Thank you for all your perspectives. I realized that I should explain my assumptions or logic as it were. Are my assumptions invalid? Assumptions- The VSG will help with appetite control. This is the MAIN REASON I am considering this option. Right now my problem is I can eat a lot and before I feel full. I expect with VSG, I can feel full on a LOT LESS. - The initial phase will involve a lot of Protein shakes and such. I can do this in the weight loss phase but cannot sustain for rest of my life consuming processed shakes. My expectation is that I can eat NORMAL food in life once I am in maintenance phase.. just much much smaller portions of it. This includes salads, and some whole grains like quinoa, brown rice etc. I can eat with my family and not have to make separate food for myself always. This is the reason I am choosing VSG as it is not a malabsorbtive procedure. We cook most things from scratch and for most part make healthy choices. Ms Skinniness --> I made a mistake in the A1c number. It is 6.6 which is now considered diabetic. I read that study as well. One of the points made was that it is more likely to prevent diabetes if the surgery is done in early stages of diagnosis when the beta cells in the pancreas are still working OK. So I am interpreting that as if I have to do surgery, earlier is better. OTR Sleever --> We have already checked with insurance and we are covered. amazon13 --> A lot of very good soul searching questions.. I have to think about this. The ones i have most trouble with are (a) Ready to eat protein with only a little veggie. I need to be able to consume vegetables. This is the primary source of my nutrients as I am a vegetarian. (b)Ready to possibly give up Pasta, rice and potatoes forever. Am I unrealistic to expect that I can do this in moderation in life? Say 1/3 cup of pasta or rice?
  9. MacMadame - Do a lot of people get stuck on tortillas? Is there a better tortilla to try that doesn't stick since it is technically a bread? Do some people just don't even mess with any tortillas since they don't mess with bread at all? Aubrie - Where do you get this cajun and buffalo flavored meat? Sounds so good. Donna and Jachut, don't a lot of things have preservatives in them? I was a vegetarian until recently, so I have trouble understanding which meats have preservatives in them and which don't. If you buy it at the deli counter, are their no preservatives? And if you start with lunch meat, isn't a lot of other meat like frozen chicken and fish full of preservatives too? I didn't know if it was very exclusive to lunch meat. Melolo- Do you or anyone else get stuck on Pita Bread?

What is my Malfunction! I'm not losing!

  11. I was banded June 26th at right around 235. I am just now barely at 220. I am not giving up but I am very, very perplexed. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have had several fills I use FitDay.com religiously - eat about 1000 calories a day and have been maintaining these calories for 30 days. For the last few weeks I have been Exercising 30 - 60 minutes 4 days a week. Cardio and Circuit Training (my heart rate is up there) I am a vegetarian. I keep gaining and losing the same 3 lbs now for the last month!
  12. My questions were different. I wanted to know if they had issues with vegetarian diets? Could they work around my many food and medicine allergies? Could they operate without blood? Everything else I had checked into before deciding on this doc and/or were answered during the seminar.
  13. My daughter is also a vegetarian so we modify a lot of our meals and use a meat replacement. I know they are generally higher in carbs. I would love to know any vegetarian recipes you have that are band friendly! I'm only 4 days post op so it will be awhile before I can try any of them.

    Avoiding Protein Shakes

Are you a vegan? If not, you might try whizzing up your own "protein" shakes using milk, milk powder (for extra protein), eggs or egg powder, and whatever flavoring and level of sweetness you prefer. Throw in some tofu or Peanut Butter and whiz it up thoroughly. OR zap up some soup with milk powder and have something savory. I couldn't handle the Protein drinks, either (still can't), so I made do with "food" sources of protein, mostly dairy, until I got to the mushies stage. Cottage cheese and yogurt and peanut butter are staples in my diet now, too--I am not a vegetarian, but my sleeve seems to prefer seafood and dairy protein to meat and chicken (don't get me started on how sleevie really dislikes chicken and eggs now!). Best wishes to you!! Once you hit mushies, you're golden--Beans, tofu, nut butters, etc. If you can tolerate dairy, so much the easier. Meg
  15. Can’t really help on the vegetarian meal suggestions except for beans, lentils & barley dusges. I often throw lentils, barley or beans into soups for extra protein. What about faux meat products? I know some are fine with them but others won’t eat them. I understand the dislike of sweet things (I eat very little sweet foods) but I don’t find rolled oats sweet at all - wouldn’t eat them if they were. I use traditional oats with a spoon of seeds, make them on milk & add some blueberries before eating - 15g of protein (which is more than 2 eggs). I don’t add natural or artificial sweeteners. The natural sugar in the milk & the berries is plenty for me. And this is usually the only fruit I eat in a day & one of my two serves of multi/whole grain carbs.

    Pre-op doubts

I am an advocate of finding the food choices & way of eating that works for you. There isn’t just one totally correct way to eat eat. It may be vegetarian or meat focussed or Aitken or vegan or keto, intermittent fasting or frequent eating, etc. or include aspects of a number of eating styles. The only thing you can trust will work for everyone is portion control - eat more than you need you’ll gain weight. Once you get to maintenance you can really embrace your new way of eating but you could start to incorporate aspects while losing as long as you’re still meeting your plan’s requirements & expectations. Have regular conversations with your nutritionalist & surgeon to discuss what you could start introducing & when. Your regular blood work will influence their advice & recommendations. You may (or may not) have to make adjustments to your weight loss plan & future eating style because of your personal physiological needs. Some may be pre existing, some may arise because of the surgery or be discovered as a result of all the additional medical tests & monitoring. I’ve never been great with too fatty or too oily food. I was low fat while losing but added some more good fats from goal. I was low carb while losing too & then added some whole & multi grains carbs. Since my sleeve, rice, bread & pasta sit like lumps in my tummy so I still don’t eat them. Protein has become even more important to me since I had my gall removed 4 months ago as I don’t absorb it properly anymore. I’m a carnivore but include vegetarian meals occasionally. 40+yrs of fasting & skipping meals killed my metabolism. I feed my much faster metabolism now - 3 meals & 3 or 4 snacks a day. These things influenced how I chose to eat now & it’s been working for me. Your enthusiasm for researching & adopting a new way of eating & making the changes to take the best advantage of your surgery is fantastic. I hope it motivates others starting the process too. Good luck.

    April: Marching into spring

Hello everyone, just checking in. Hope you've been well since you last logged in. Slow weight loss and slowed down in the exercising area. I did get to the gym twice so far this week. I'll get there tonight though. I've gone back to my usual way of eating. My junk food craving has not surfaced. I'll alternate between vegetarian/seitan meals and fish meals now. Having a balance between the two. I did get good at preparing vegetarian meals. How have you been doing?

    Help please!

I have a slim fast drink for lunch and have Pasta, vegetables, or something else I am able to eat (I'm a vegetarian). I exercise around four times a week, usually swimming for 45 minutes or going on the elliptical for around 30 minutes. I do feel I have restriction for what I can eat or how fast I eat but not how much I eat. I have a 10 cc band filled up with 7 ccs. I am frustrated because I am not losing weight. Any suggestions?

"picky eaters" - my pet peeve

My pet peeve is people who call someone a "picky eater". I have multiple food allergies. You better believe I read labels and don't eat or drink everything put in front of me. I probably would be considered a "delicate eater". I also have a bit of a tactile issue with certain textures and cooking methods even when they make little sense. The biggest oxymoron? Carrots. I will eat them raw or very lightly steamed. Cooked the make me gag. The exception? Carrot cake. But here's the thing, you'd be surprised at hows fat finds you. I have been vegetarian for 15 years. I gained from a combination of illness and an over reliance on carbs. Even adjusting my eating couldn't reverse the damage that chronic conditions and years of bad eating had done.
  21. Recently switched to a vegetarian lifestyle (still eating cheese and fish as a protein source though) and would appreciate any advice, recipes or any other tid bits to help me stay on track... Thanks.
  22. Hi, Yes you can always message someone. I think where I got my biggest help is from following Dr. Garth Davis, and just looking at anything vegetarian that gives recipes. I also have Indian/Hindu people, where the diet is very very tasty, and they do emphasis on the flavors in the dishes, not salt, fat, sugar. You also want to make the decision as to the type of food you want to eat. There are those who eat only fish, some poultry, some eat eggs and cheese, some don't. You sort of want to figure out what lifestyle you want to go for and then find the recipes. That's what I do. It also depends on whether or not you are willing to try other cuisines. I'll eat anything if I can keep it down. I can eat some spice, it is the salt, sugar, etc. that I don't do well with. I can do a tiny bit at a time, but otherwise, whoops it is going to bite me.

"picky eaters" - my pet peeve

First of all, vegetarian here. I could really use some company. Feel free to come sit by me anytime! Secondly the term "picky eater" chaps my biscuits in the worse way! Why should I eat something that makes me gag? Or has an unpleasant mouth feel? I won't even go into it with people who try to tell me that my allergies are "all in my head". YES, YES, YES!!!! Silly me tried to share a way to make a pizza like meal for someone who said they missed Dominoes Pizza. May as well have recommended they fly to the moon.
  24. First, you have to really realize that you must be on a "diet" for the rest of your life. If you are working out, it may be a 2000 calorie one (maybe).. but you will always have to watch what you eat. (And don't just watch yourself eat that entire pumpkin pie!). Once you wrap your brain around that fact, then it is time to do the mental work of figuring out what sort of plan will work for you. Each of us must figure out what will work for us LONG TERM. For one, it's keto, another is vegetarian. Then, back to basics.. calorie free beverages, protein first, no drinking with meals, at least 3 meals and a snack each day, no flour or sugar during weight loss. Etc. Track what you eat now to get an idea if how many calories to start with.
