    Is duodenal switch too drastic?

Statistics show better long term results with DS. Iโ€™m revising from sleeve to DS for this reason. In retrospect I wish I had the chance to do it all at once instead of sleeve only. Iโ€™m not a super high BMI. Then again at the time I had sleeve done 6 years ago, I didnโ€™t think there was any way that I would ever regain so thereโ€™s that. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
  2. @scoutmom... hi we are very similar. I had the sleeve in 2015. I had also gained back 40lbs because I had such bad GERD which turned to Barrettโ€™s Esophagus and all I wanted to eat was comforting carbs. So I just had revision surgery 8 weeks ago to the bypass. I have lost 29lbs so far. The eating seems easier than after the sleeve, Iโ€™m progressing really well, even eating chicken. I donโ€™t have that hard stop that I had with the sleeve so I weigh and measure everything. I did get thrush after surgery which was something I was told was common after that surgery, so be aware of that. I can drink very well, unless I gulp too fast or too much. Youโ€™re going to do great and Iโ€™m sure you may be nervous but all will go well. Iโ€™ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery and a quick recovery. Good luck!!

    Band to Sleeve?!?!

I just had my revision from band to sleeve in July due to band slippage and weight gain over the past few years. I was in the same boat where I assumed that my insurance wouldn't cover it to the point that I initially was going to join the non-surgical weight loss program as I didn't think I could have another bariatric surgery. The PA I met with assured me that was not the case and that revision surgery is common and approval for them is not that hard to get. The fact that your lapband is in complete failure due to the damage sustained to the port means it should be easy for your doctor to provide all of the documentation needed to your insurance provider that the revision is medically necessary. Most bariatric surgeons are going to know how to "dance" with the insurance companies in order to get the needed result for their patients.
  4. I'm not a revision, but I've been hanging out on various forums for the last six or seven years. A lot of people lose about 20-ish lbs after a revision, but it depends a lot on how much weight you need to lose. There are some people who've lost a lot more than that.
  5. I am looking to get a revision From the band to the sleeve. I got my band in 2009 and had went from 249 to 145. Had a pretty bad slip in 2016 and the ER doc didnโ€™t know what to do so I had to guide him while take fluid out. He was a bit heavy handed and I think he damaged the port. They canโ€™t refill the band because they think the port has disconnected from the โ€œhoseโ€. Iโ€™ve steadily gained and am back up to 220. My doc wants to remove my band and convert to the sleeve We are just now in the starting process and Iโ€™ve worried my insurance wonโ€™t cover it!! ๐Ÿ˜ž
  6. I am having a revision from VSG to RNY on 9/15 due to severe GERD....can anyone share their experience on weight loss post revision? A little history: I had my sleeve done in 2015 and loved it. Easy recovery and great results. For the past year, I developed severe ACID reflux and Gerd with a hiatal hernia. Unfortunately, I gained 40 lbs back. So much of this was due to the fact that if my sleeve was empty the acid was so much worse. So I started eating tons of carbs to keep the acid soaked up. I didn't catch it soon enough so the weight gain continued. I am very excited to get rid of the GERD, but also want to get a realistic weight loss goal in my plan. How much did you lose after your revision?

    Is duodenal switch too drastic?

I started with a BMI over 60, and nobody even brought up DS as an option for me. To be honest, I thought DS was an outdated surgery that's not really being done anymore because of all the risks. I didn't realize it's still popular for high-BMI patients. The surgeon who did my RNY doesn't do DS. He recommended RNY to me rather than sleeve because of my high BMI, since RNY patients statistically lose a bit more than sleeve patients. My understanding is that the sleeve is basically the first step in DS, and that's how the procedure was developed -- surgeons would do the DS in two separate surgeries for high-risk patients, and a lot of them didn't even need the second surgery because they lost enough weight with the sleeve alone. So, that is one option: get the sleeve first and have it revised to DS if necessary. You could also have a sleeve revised to RNY. I remember seeing a bariatric surgeon on YouTube say that he recommends the sleeve to all patients because you can always get it revised, but to me, that's crazy because I don't want to have more than one surgery!

    Weight lost question

Your weight loss depends on a lot of factors including your pre-op weight. The less you have to lose the slower the weight will come off. Also, you had a revision and revisions tend to lose slower. That doesn't mean it's not going to come off, it'll just likely come off a lot slower than you would like. Also, you may still have some fluid from your surgery. From my own experience it took about 10 days to get rid of that fluid so give yourself a few more days and I'm sure you'll drop a few more pounds. Congrats on your new surgery and I wish you the best!
  9. July 2019 I had a sleeve surgery lots of complications had a revision to bypass done February 2020. Been recovering and healing at home but obviously with the pandemic not a whole lot of socializing happening. Now my family (large extended) has figured out a location and way to have a get together and still be able to ensure safety as much as possible. This is taking place tomorrow afternoon. I am a little nervous about when itโ€™s time to eat. My family shows love with food and lots of it. (And based on the fact that I started this journey at 350+lbs you can probably guess they donโ€™t always prepare the most healthy food choices). I plan to make sure that I avoid the food area as much as possible and to drink my water and will have my nausea medicine in case there is anything that sets my stomach off. I donโ€™t want to hurt peopleโ€™s feelings by not eating their food but I have absolutely no interest in making myself sick or binging on bad for me food. I am sure I will be okay and am just having a case of nerves since the is my first โ€œpartyโ€ situation since I started the process of having wls and even though itโ€™s all family I am worried someone is going to be watching every bite I put in my mouth. Someone, anyone please tell me Iโ€™m not crazy and itโ€™s normal to be worried how itโ€™s going to go.

    Dumping

I had the sleeve back in 2012. I could eat whatever I wanted and never dumped. That may be why I gained all my weight back. So I just had it revised to the bypass and I was curious about the dumping. I've heard its pretty bad. Hopefully I'm one of the ones that never dumps. Thanks for sharing!
  11. I saw my plastic surgeon and he is going to do a local injection to revise some problem spots from my brachioplasty. He also want to do a little steroid injections at some of the darker, thicker incision areas. My bypass surgeon said never to have any anti inflammatory or steroids. He said to not even have a steroid injection in a joint etc. He is very conservative. Has anyone else ever had steroid injections locally just skin deep after bypass? Would you ever consider it? If I do can I take tums or something to help prevent an issue. The steroid obviously wouldn't be taken orally but would go into my blood stream.

    Weight gain post revision

I went in for my revision on 8/11 weighing 212 and at my week post op on 8/19 I weighed 215. I know it was from fluid because I got 6+ bags of IV fluids in the 4 days post op in the hospital.

    Anyone for September 2020?

I am having revision from sleeve to bypass on September 18 (due to GERD). I start the liquid diet tomorrow. It doesnโ€™t feel real just yet.
  14. I had my revision on 6/29. Chicken, even with my sleeve, was always a difficult protein for me to get down. Have you tried a softer protein? Tuna with light mayo? Egg salad? Ground pork in spaghetti sauce? Maybe try something else besides chicken. I can eat most things now at nine weeks post-op.
  15. I had the gastric sleeve in 2012 and I just had my revision to the bypass on July 27th. So far I am regretting it. I was told I could move on to solids. I have tried eating chicken but it gets stuck in my throat and I have to throw it up. I'm scared I'll never eat normal again. The sleeve was much easier than this. I never had this problem. Will things get better soon?

    Pressure and Bloat

When I did my pre-op for my VSG I had loose stools and was gassy. When I did my pre-op for my VSG to RNY revision I was constipated and bloated even with the same diet. Some people experience loose stools and lots of gas with a mostly or all liquid diet. Just depends on your body and how it wants to handle things. Hang in there, the loose stools and gassiness didnโ€™t last forever for me, just a few days so hopefully the same for you!
  17. Hi all, I had my sleeve revised to bypass on Monday, 8/31. I am 4 days in and weigh more than I did on surgery day. Is this still surgical fluids? Iโ€™m following my Stage 1 plan to the letter and frustrated.

    Before and After Pics

Had my surgery, vbg revision to rny gastric bypass on 3/10/20.
  19. Getting pregnant so soon after surgery is one of the reason Iโ€™m having to get a revision now. If I had to do it all again, Iโ€™d have the child then the surgery unless it was dangerous for me to do so. Having a baby really changes your diet, body, and limits the time truly needed to dedicate yourself to a healthier you in the beginning. If you have the surgery first, I would wait at least 3-4 years before having a child.
  20. ๐Ÿ‘‹. I am scheduled for September 29th and canโ€™t wait. Good to see how quickly you are feeling better. My revision is gastric band to mgb

    All the DS Switch friends

I am getting ready to revise to DS from sleeve. I donโ€™t know how many DS people we have on here, although I think it is starting to get slightly more popular.

Little Weight Loss on Pre-OP & None Post-Surgery

Definitely sounds like IV fluids. I went in for a VSG to RNY revision (hernia and GERD) on 8/11 and weighed 212. I spent 4 days in the hospital on IV fluids. I had my first post op on 8/19 and weighed 215. Just stick with it and trust the process. You will lose weight.

    Crappy Dietician

I met with my NUT once before my revision. She looked at my Myfitnesspal and handed it back to me and said..... Good, keep that up. Then she said, well you should know what to do, this is your second time. Made me feel like a failure... which i was not. Anyway, Friday was my one year and yesterday was my one year appt. All they keep saying is you are doing an amazing job.... but still no sight of the NUT. I'm sure she is there... somewhere. @Keatsy I think i'm with you.... may go back and become a NUT.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

So bear with me on this one. Back in February when I had my first appointment with the Holyoke Medical Weight Management program, I met with one of the two physician assistants that handle the intake of new patients. In that meeting, I went in looking into the medical weight loss program since I was under the impression that I was not eligible for further bariatric surgery. One of the first questions asked of me was what my goal weight was. I was told not to overthink it and to simply give her a number that I wanted to get down to. I said "225 pounds", which seemed like an unachievable goal, but it was what I weighed 20 or so years ago and while still overweight, was a comfortable weight for me. As that would involve losing 116 pounds, she informed me that I would be unlikely to achieve that goal in the medical program, but that it would be much more achievable in the surgical program. She quickly cleared up my misconceptions about my eligibility for revision surgery and sent me home to think about how I wanted to proceed. A couple of weeks later, I was back in for my official intake into the surgical weight loss program to start the journey to removing my lapband and revising to a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. From that point, you've pretty much seen my progress and success. So I only weigh myself once a week and it is on Tuesday mornings (used to be on Fridays, but once I had my surgery, I moved it to Tuesdays to align with the day I had surgery). Here's this week's update: Starting Weight: 341.1 Surgery Day Weight: 262.8 Pre-surgery Weight Loss: 78.3 Current Weight: 225.2 Weight Lost in Past Week: 3.8 Post Surgery Weight Loss: 37.6 Total Weight Loss: 115.9 So, a couple of things: 1) I weighed myself 5 damn times this morning to see if I could get that .2 to go away. It didn't. My scale is too accurate to indulge in my shenanigans. 2) I am going to end up breaking my rule and will end up reweighing myself on Thursday or Friday, just so I can see that .2 disappear. 3) I have now lost more than a third of my body weight. 33.98%, to be precise. 4) Next goal is 190lbs. But first I have to get rid of that annoying .2lbs
