There are many bariatric cookbooks available on Amazon and elsewhere. These are some of the ones I've gotten:

    Strange Stomach Noises with Pain

Sounds more bowel related & a colonoscopy may be warranted. Bariatric surgeons tend to specialise in the gastrointestinal area. From what you describe a colorectal surgeon may be more appropriate. Have you spoken with your GP?

    Back To The Basics

I’m with the give them a miss until you’re at or close to your goal team. Sticking to your plan will help you take the most advantage of your surgery. When you get closer to goal you may start to look for healthy substitutes for your traditional choices. Try air fried or oven baked not deep fried. Try vegetable based pastas (you can eat zucchini noodles & cauliflower rice from solid foods). There are keto friendly low carb high protein breads you could try later on. If your desire to eat these ‘non bariatric friendly foods’ is driven by emotions, finding a good therapist may be helpful. Recognising the causes of your emotional eating, finding ways to manage them better & identifying other means of coping with your emotional needs than eating, etc. will only help you be more successful with your weight loss & maintenance. A benefit of avoiding those foods while you’re losing is by goal you may actually reduce or lose some of your desire for pizza, pasta, & the other foods you currently want & depend on. Which will make it much easier if you chose to have the odd slice of bread or pizza, etc. now & again in the future. Personally, I don’t eat pasta (only fresh zucchini noodles), rice or bread & avoid sweet things & fried foods. They were all things I ate regularly & enjoyed but I don’t really miss them at all now. I was able to break my need for them & I was eating them for a lot longer than you’ve been alive 😉. It can be done. Exercise will only contribute to you losing a maximum of 20% of the weight you have to lose. Of course it has lots of other benefits so I’m certainly not saying exercise is a waste of time but don’t rely on it to loose your weight. But it’s really up to you & you discovering what works best for you. Good luck.

    Back To The Basics

Yes...but here's the catch: you have to eat "bariatric-friendly" versions of your favorite junk foods. Think cauliflower pizza crust with low-sugar sauce and turkey pepperoni, donuts and cookies made with almond flour and monk fruit sweetener, Mac and cheese made with macaroni from the Great Low Carb Bread Co. and low-fat cheese sauce, sugar-free cool whip on a crustless sugar-free pumpkin pie slice, etc. The good news is there's a surprisingly large number of already-made foods available such as "Oreos" made by Catalina Crunch, "potato chips" made by Quest or Kay's, etc. If you do your homework, you don't ever have to eat anything bad for you ever again. Good luck! You'll do great.

    Bad eating habits

The first thing to do is ask yourself, what are my triggers? Then work to resolve them. What makes you get off of your plan? Find out what your triggers are, then resolve to get back to your plan. If it's cravings that are driving you mad, try and find bariatric friendly versions of your favorite junk foods. Just make sure to measure out your portions. There's nearly a bariatric friendly version of just about any food these days, many of which taste just as good as "the real thing." Good luck! You've got this! ❤️
  6. Hi everyone! I just wanted to say if anyone is need of recipes, I'm full of them. I know this time of year can be a nightmare for those of us who have had bariatric surgery, and I wanted to let you know if you need help, I'm here! I've got recipes for all sorts of bariatric-friendly holiday foods: pumpkin pie, cauliflower stuffing, cookies, donuts, delicious drinks, etc. Yes, you CAN enjoy the tastes of the season if you've had bariatric surgery! NOTE: Please let me know of food allergies.
  7. I take the Bariatric Advantage Chewy Bites multi and calcium citrate---they're very palatable, like a Starburst, and come in a ton of flavors. The only drawback is they don't have iron, but I take a dissolving, easily digestible iron tablet from BariMelts and those are fairly easy to handle and don't upset my tummy. Give those a shot; you really need to be taking vitamins, especially iron if you menstruate.
  8. Are you on FB? There’s a bariatric support group for NYC. Good luck!

    Not loose Weight pre op

Thank you for explaining this in-depth. I have my first consultation with NYC Bariatric Group. I also have EMBLEMHEALTH GHI. My BMI is 43. I am really hoping they don’t deny me because I don’t believe I have any comorbidities. Any advice besides that? Thank you so much for how well you explained how this insurance works. I was very worried.
  10. Pasta. I love pasta. I make my own pasta. I have an array of pasta-making tools. I know how to cook pasta and how to marry condiments to pasta. It all tastes like gluey wallboard to me now. Which is fine, because I certainly don't need to be eating it. But it's a bit heartbreaking. I have found I don't actually want more than a bite of anything sweet. And I mean a bariatric-sized bite, not a "barely fits on the spoon due to the intrusive influence of gravity" bite. We had something quite spicy yesterday and I bought a piece of flan ("chiquito", she called it, "really small", it was probably 8 cm/3 in on a side). A tiny bit, not even enough to assuage the chile fire within my mouth, and I pushed it away. My fiancé was shocked, because in the Before Times I would have hoovered up the entire piece and gone for seconds. And deli roast beef now just tastes like those fake dead powdered spices they use on it. I don't have an issue with beef in general, even steak, but deli roast beef is gross to me now.
  11. Hey guys! I'm currently 5 weeks post op (30 Ibs down since my surgery date) and will be able to transition to regular foods at week 8. I was curious to know who hasn't had problems with eating foods we are all lectured about avoiding, in moderation (Pizza, bread, fried foods). I am 25 years old and a lot younger than most I've seen on this forum. My goal for Bariatric surgery is to exercise, and portion control while making better food choices, but I never planned on ruling anything out. I'm not an emotional eater or have a mean sweet tooth, my biggest problem with my weight was how much I ate. Is it possible to live a balanced lifestyle after Bariatric surgery without completely cutting out junk food?

Feeling awful 6 weeks post op!

Agree with @vikingbeast. You need to take a big step back. You’re stressed & emotional which only enhances those cravings. You crave the foods which offered you comfort in the past & you crave the familiar of being able to eat what you want, when you want it. And the more you worry the more anxious you become. You may find a therapist who specialises in supporting bariatric patients very helpful. Ask your surgeon for a recommendation. Constipation is part of the journey. I tried to keep on top of mine by taking Benefibre at least every second day, keeping my fluid intake up & taking a stool softener if I got to day 3 or 4 without movement. I also ate very mild instant rolled oats from purée stage. Took me days to eat a full serve but it was good fibre. You may need an enema since it’s been 15 days or a visit to the hospital for assistance. Being constipated does make it seem you’ve stopped losing or have gained. Get rid of it & your weight will be lower very quickly & you’ll feel much better. Stalls are very common. They can last 1 - 3 weeks, sometimes more. And you can experience a number of them as you’re losing. The first usually occurs around week 3 give or take. You just have to ride them out. They’re just your body taking a time out to come to terms with your weight loss. Changes to your sense of smell & taste are also common. They usually are temporary but how long it lasts is individual. Are there specific foods that upset you more you can avoid? The strong body odour is from your body being in ketosis - fat burning. It’s like every bodily secretion reeks. It passes too. I took deodorant, toothbrush, tooth paste & mouth wash & body wipes to work for refreshes during the day. I was someone who frequently skipped meals in an effort to lose weight (did that for 40+years) & tried all those very low calorie diets including one I did several times that was only 500 calories a day. I still lost all my weight & more. Stick as close to your plan as you can. It may take you a little longer to reach a stage recommendation for calories, portion size &/or foods you can eat but that’s ok. You’ll get there.
  13. Protein is important for the rest of your life. Everyone should be eating protein regardless if they are bariatric patients or not. Your body needs it for healing, muscle & bone health, digestion, … https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/functions-of-protein#TOC_TITLE_HDR_9 The daily recommended amount is 0.8g per kilogram for a non bariatric patient. (I’m required to reach 1.2g of protein per kg of weight in maintenance.) My surgeon was ok if I didn’t meet my protein goals each day to begin as long as I was making an effort to be close. It gets easier when you can eat more. If you can’t tolerate the shakes try bone broth, well strained cream soups or consumes, wonton soup broth (no wontons or vegetables of course). I struggled with shakes too so would dilute them & just rode out one a day for the two weeks.
  14. I had vsg surgery last November. I had the typical shedding of hair that happens with weight loss. I thought I was over the hump. But my hair feels even thinner now. I just bought bariatric fusion hair nails and skin vitamins as well as Olaplex. I haven’t been great with my vitamins, so I’m completely taking the blame. But I’m freaking out! Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
  15. Hello, Im completely new to all of this and i started the process to fill out all the requirements to have bariatric surgery approved by my insurance. in that time my company changed insurance providers and we were told the plans would not change much but when the time came to submit the request for approval they rejected my application because that type of surgery is not covered. So now i find myself desperately searching online for a private provider that does cover the surgery because i dont want to loose all the work i already put into this. Any info anyone has would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

    Post op day 2

Post op day 4 Feeling worse than yesterday 😩 I came home yesterday and I felt ok for a while. I managed half of a protein water mixed with miralax and a little extra water. I attempted bone broth, and just typing it makes me want to gag. today was to be full liquids. I have managed about 24 oz water and maybe a third of a fairlife shake. I also started vitamins today, and good Lord! Those multi vitamin chewables from bariatric advantage didn’t seem as big prior to surgery! My dietitian wanted me taking two of those beasts, I managed 1 and a half. I feel icky in my tummy all day. I’ve been soooooo sleepy and freezing! I was anemic prior to surgery and got my period early 🙄 so I’m probably even more so now. I have been in bed most of the day with the exception of walking to the bathroom, I guess the half a miralax did something. I’m producing watery bright yellow stools, in minimal quantities…I can’t trust a toot. I think the thiamine supplement I was on (and should still be taking, but haven’t been able to) is causing the bright yellow color. It has been so nice being in my bed. the abdomen pain isn’t bad, just getting up from lying down is a little painful. my 5.5 year old boy has been so sweet, bringing me gifts he’s made me. im going make myself get up now and walk around the house for 5 min. I might see what Panera’s soup look like, if they qualify as full liquid. Oh! Also, I was told to take the omeprazole capsule and open it and mix with apple sauce. Is applesauce allowed at this point? Or is it just for taking medication?

    Sandwiches and chips

I think maybe you need to talk to your surgical team about a diet sheet and guidance - plus there are posts on here about cook books for bariatric surgery. I suspect a change of food mindset is required - you may have loved Greggs pasties before your surgery, but Greggs pasties maybe have contributed to your problems in the first place - I don’t know. But melted cheese and onion sounds very dense and clogged to me, and not the sort of thing your small stomach will find easy to deal with. I used to love getting a spaghetti bolognese if we were out for a meal and picking the mince and sauce out of the pasta when I was further down the line - a tiny bit pasta, well chewed, may be fine - but the prize was the protein and the tomato sauce… in easily chewable and digestible forms. You started this thread saying you are 9 days post op - you shouldn’t really even be thinking about pasties - please get your surgical team to do their job and give you guidance on what to consume. You are in this for the long hall and you need to take things slowly. All the best.

    Majorly high B12 levels?

I agree with Bariatric Evangelist - high levels in the blood do not necessarily indicate high usage - actually the opposite. I was always told by my bariatric team that you should take 5mg Folic acid a day to help you process and absorb the B12. Otherwise it’s not being utilised by the body. The tiredness is more likely to be because you cannot utilise the B12 in your blood, not that you’ve got too much of it. The reason the blood count would be so high would more likely be because of non-absorption to the tissues. Further investigation is needed.
  19. It sounds like you know what you are doing right and what you could improve on. I suggest a protein shake in the morning and maybe a P3 or a lunchable at noon if you haven’t tried that to help give you some energy during the day and chewable vitamins by bariatric advantage if you hate swallowing pills. Other than that my only advice is to stick to your plan.

Regrets for a Food & Wine Lover?

This is true hunger. My bariatric therapist said about 20% of her patients have no loss of hunger after surgery. It feels exactly like if I had gone all day without eating prior to surgery, but I have it all the time, even right after a meal. I don't have specific cravings for food, although my mom served my favorite cake last night (there were guests besides me there) and I definitely wanted some, but decided the risk of starting back on eating cake wasn't worth what I remembered the cake tasting like. I had a ff greek yogurt instead. It was a little sad, but I'm glad I made that choice. Of course, I've lost 25 lb in the 8 weeks since surgery and I'm down 75 since I started preparing for surgery in February, so I'm trying to focus on the positive. It's just that I too thought everyone looses their hunger and starts craving healthy foods. It's just not true (although MOST people do lose their hunger for about 6 months).

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I’m nearly 4 weeks on Monday out since the gastric sleeve, I spoke with my Bariatric nurse yesterday she said it’s very common around this time to stall and she explained when you were on a normal diet that you get stalls and don’t lose every week. but it will start coming off again. I haven’t lost anything in over a week but I also have my period and I normally put water weight on while I’m on it and so next week I’m probably going to start losing, fingers crossed, so don’t worry about the stalls, they happen and it’s just your body trying to catch up with the little amounts of food and getting over the stress of the op.

    Soft foods

It will really depend on your doctor, I advise following the plan they gave you. Once my team at my surgeon’s office advanced me to soft foods my favorite was tuna with a little mayo, or a ricotta bake. This blog has great Bariatric recipes for each stage of your eating plan: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/03/recipes.html?m=1

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

You got this!! 💪 Surgery is going to go better than you expect and you're going to soar! One of my biggest fears prior to surgery was if I would ever enjoy food again 😔 and I was so happy to read on this board and to hear from my medical team (who have had bariatric surgery themselves) that in fact I'll enjoy it even more in a much healthier way! Wishing you the best!

    Gummy Vitamins/ibuprofen

@catwoman7 has it exactly right on the NSAIDs—Aleve is right out, too. My bariatric vitamins literally were gummies. I mentioned it to my surgeon and he said just chew it thoroughly ("enjoy that artificial berry flavor from the New Jersey Turnpike," were his exact words). As long as the amounts of each on the back were what he wanted, he didn't care. No issues with gummies.
