    Getting annoyed..

"Haha! I'm only so focused because I'm looking forward to the surgery!" Seriously that was my motivation when I was doing low-carb last year (lost a few lbs) before my surgery... it was because I just wanted to make sure I could do it... LOL. I did low-carb for like a month, from thanksgiving til Christmas... Then I basically felt like "well it's not like they've scheduled my surgery...." So I went on a Key Lime Pie binge vacation! I was down in the Keys and decided to just have everyone's version of Key Lime Pie. LOL. Idk how much I lost while low-carb vs how much I gained back... (Overall I was down from 392 to 375 at my pre-surgery appt) But the week after NewYears, my doc office finally called to schedule me... And then I started my "food funerals". Which of course included more key lime pie...as well as mcdonalds, pizza, etc.... (On the plus side, most Greek yogurt comes in Key Lime flavor, so yay for that!! LOL.) But seriously... The motivation of there being an END to the counting and dieting and such... That's what got me through the pre-surgery diet, etc. And sure it was awesome to lose 20 lbs in two weeks on the pre-surgery diet... But that diet sucked!!! No way I could have sustained it any longer. I was so relieved to finally just have surgery, so part of my brain could rest.
  3. Hello June 2014 BPs! I start my pre-op, liquid diet tomorrow and I know that I am not alone. So, let's get a June 2014, pre-op diet support thread going! After going through five different brands (thank goodness for sample packets!), I finally settled on Syntrax Nectars Fuzzy Naval for the first few days of shakes. In addition to that I've got sugar free pudding, popsicles, Jello and Greek yogurt 100 calorie. I'm nervous and excited at the same time. Surgery is getting close! What's everyone stocked up on? How are you feeling?
  4. You might be just a bit too tight, so you're compensating by eating easy to eat foods during the day, which leave you famished by dinner and snaking in between meals. Just a slight unfill of .2cc might make the difference, but then you're also going to have to work on eating more solid foods and fighting the urge to snack that you've re-established. If feel like you have the right level of fill, and the tight daytime restriction is normal for you, it's going to be important for you to find foods that stick with you during the day, but aren't hard on the band. One soft food that works for me is Greek yogurt with all bran Cereal mixed into it. Adding the cereal makes a world of difference on the level of satiety I get from that simple snack/meal. (I found myself overdoing the Snacks..I mostly ate healthy snacks, but the calories were adding up..when I wasn't quite at the right fill level. I had to make a point of turning off my head hunger and let the band do it's "magic". Once I was eating properly and at the right level of restriction, it wasn't hard to get back into the groove of three 1/2 cup meals/day + one healthy snack.) Also, if you have several hours between lunch and dinner, a healthy Protein heavy snack might be in order at that time, only if a snack is included in your plan, since some doctors recommend larger meals and no snacks.
  5. I'm 6 weeks pot op. Eating 600-800 cal per day. 60+ Protein and 30-40 carbs. Exercise almost daily - 1 hour walk w good pace and weights after. I had a total of 45 pounds to lose and have lost 23 pre and post op. The. It all came to a screeching haul the and I started gaining a few oz every day for the past 2 weeks and now I'm up 2.5 total. Not a lot but with the way I'm eating and exercising I would expect loss. I'm at about -900 net calories per day. Any ideas? I'm not a believer in "starvation mode" because I've read so much that shows its a myth. Any other ideas???? Thanks everyone. ???? Ps. Carbs come from things like: Bariatric Advantage bars, honey in tea, nuts, fruit, Greek yogurt or a splash of apple juice in Water. No starches or processed sugars at all.

    6wks post and gaining. Gree

@@OldMomOf3 Ps. Carbs come from things like: Bariatric Advantage bars, honey in tea, nuts, fruit, Greek yogurt or a splash of apple juice in Water. No starches or processed sugars at all. I just wanted to add something about this. I am not a sugar Nazi but I want to point out that your body does not know one sugar from another. It does not discriminate sugar from fruit VS. a tablespoon of sugar. I personally stay away from fruit at this stage in tha game because I can get glucose from my stored glycogen and Protein. Sure it tastes great but it is not needed to survive. If you are going to eat fruit I would just sugest that you also eat protein with it to cease hunger because sugar in any form with tend to make you more hungry and faster, not to mention you will crave more and more. Just a suggestion.

    Sleeved 9/7/12, My Good Experience

Just an update...we still haven't weighed in but clothes are already getting looser. I'm excited for when we do weigh in. We haven't had any nausea, just several days of wanting to sleep the day away! I love SF jello, and applesauce. The Unjury Chicken Soup flavored protein shake has been wonderful and goes down very smoothly when a little warmer than room temp. My husband's sleeve has been more temperamental but he's doing ok too. We have tried greek yogurt, yum, and this morning we tried a very small amount of scrambled eggs. (I was surprised this was on the list.) It went ok for me, caused a little discomfort for my husband. We also blended up some vegetable soup and that was delish. My sleeve seems to prefer the higher and lower temperatures (I am enjoying ice water!) but my husband's prefers completely room temperature Any variation leaves him feeling uncomfortable for an hour or so.

    first post-- protein question

At 4 days post-op, really focus on getting your Fluid volume in vs Protein grams. You'll be okay for a while with less protein as long as you're getting close to your Water goal. Going forward, I second getting some unflavored Protein powder. There are many brands, I'm a GENEPRO fan but there are other brands that others have had good luck with. Find one, because once you get to pureed/soft foods, that powdered protein will be the key to your success. I put it in cottage cheese, refried Beans, yogurt, pudding...anything soft and moist. I'm over 6 months post-op and I still put a scoop in my coffee every morning. Good luck!

    Snacks

So what are you snacking on? There's really no protein in pizza or egg rolls so they would be wasted calories at this point. 30g protein is actually a pretty low amount....most postop plans call for 60g or more. Too little protein now can lead to hairless later. here's a lot of stuff I snacked on.... Refried Beans Hard boiled eggs Baby bell cheese String cheese Avocados (I actually ate a lot of homemade guacamole) Greek yogurt flavored with Protein powder Spam Deviled ham Tuna fish chicken salad Peanut Butter P3 snack packs Split pea Soup Bean Soups Cottage cheese Quest bars are soft, come in a variety of flavors and have 20g protein each For fluids I drank diluted fruit juice, diluted Vitamin Water and Sobe, skim milk (lots of protein there, too), flavored water, and herbal teas. I had a water bottle with me at all times and never stopped sipping. Even at 10 months out I drink a large protein smoothie everyday....30-40g protein and 24-32 oz fluid in just one "snack". With so many different powder flavors and extras like Torani syrups, fruit or PB2, the variety is nearly endless.
  10. What happens if you eat until stuffed? You don't lose weight, and you risk stretching your new stomach out. The removal of the grehlin hormone production site helps. I'm finding I don't go from normal to hungry to famished - I go from normal to normal to famished. There doesn't seem to be much tummy rumbling either (of course now that I'm thinking about it, my stomach just let off a grumble, so it must be psychological). About every 4 hours, I need food. For example: breakfast-an egg, lunch a slice of ham and a slice of cheese (a non- bread sandwich), mid-afternoon a yogurt, dinner 3 Swedish meatballs, evening pudding. But, I'm still home, so when I get more active next week, this may change. Still, I'm only eating about 500-800 calories a day right now.

Start pre-op diet in 2 days. Suggestions?

Some things I'm allowed in any amount are crystal light, diet soda, sugar free jello, and broth only soups. I'm more concerned about what I can have in limited amounts, like no sugar added carnation instant breakfasts, low fat milk (lactaid for me) and chobani yogurt. I need to keep my protein per day around 56 grams, which I feel like I won't know how to do without overdoing everything.

    Cheated need HELP!

EXACTLY, like what the heck was I thinking.. Well I do know WHY, but its not an excuse. Prior to surgery was always going out with the girls for drinks. bingo, lunches etc. as I am a social butterfly Post-op I've just been hanging in the house getting used to the new rules etc and I think I was just really ready to get out and see some old familiar faces and places and made the decision to have 2 drinks!!!!! Thoug I'm not an introvert AT ALL, I'm going to have to resume my introverted activities if I can't go out and not drink. Doc told me I could have wine starting Feb 3rd. That's around the corner... I could have just waited!!!!!!! UGH I know the purpose of eating slow as I have always been a slow eater... this is just excessively SLOWWWWWWWW... Lol but yes much smaller plates is a wonderful idea. I usually only put 2/3 oz anyway because I can never do 4 oz in one sitting unless it's Soup or yogurt.... weird I guess. Thanks for the advice

    I don't like meat

I really don't like meat or eggs. I never have. After being being sleeved I dislike meat even more. That being said I don't know how to get my protein in. Cottage Cheese and Yogurt are tolerable, but boy that gets boring. I have refried nonfat beans almost everyday, and protein shakes. I am almost 4 weeks out & starting "real" food. Any suggestions? Have any of you tried quinoa after being sleeved?

    Calories

Your surgery was this month? I agree, there's no way you can get many more calories than you are already at this point. Have you tried greek yogurt or soft-boiled eggs? Cottage cheese? Just as a side note, that apple juice is not doing much for you nutritionally. Grape would give you anti-oxidants and V-8 would give you vitamin C and loads of potassium.

What's your favorite go to snacks?

I'm a huge fan of all greek yogurt. I try to watch the sugar and fat content. My fave is plain or vanilla yogurt mixed with fresh or frozen fruits. I have the Chobani Apple and Cinnamon fat free for desert often. I also discovered the Yoplait Greek 100 calorie greek yogurts. They're lower calories and have less sugar than Chobani and taste pretty darn good. Beef jerky is also a snack I enjoy often. My personal fave is Perky Jerky.

    Re: Post-Op Eating

Everyone's body is different. Stay away from carbs completely. The noodles probably got stuck in your stomach. Also chicken has fibers in it that break down in your stomach weird. Try tomato soup with u flavored protein powder, sugar free pudding, yogurt with less than 10 grams of sugar. Stay as far away as possible from carbs. They will make you sick and you won't loose as much weight.

    Pre-op Diet???

My doctor/hospital requires a 3 week pre-op diet. I started my diet 2 weeks early. In those 2 weeks I lost 15 pounds so I'd say it's worth starting your diet early. I too was told about the need to shrink the liver. My doctor's pre-op diet is pretty painless. Slim Fast for Breakfast, Lean Cuisine for lunch and dinner (keep it under 300 calories). I'm allowed 1 cup of cooked or 2 cups uncooked veggies and a 90 calorie yogurt. I can also have all the Crystal Light I can drink and sugar free Jell-O. If you're not into frozen meals, 4 Slim Fast shakes are allowed. I'm pretty happy on this diet and not really hungry. It's helping me shrink my stomach down and I love the fact that I've lost weight before the surgery. If I can do some now, that only helps me in the long run. Take care!

    Am I TOO restricted?

Okay, I am new to restriction. I had my second fill Wednesday. All day I had trouble drinking water and keeping it down. I was uncomfortable all evening. When I tried to eat, I couldn't. Thursday, more of the same. Yogurt was the only thing I could eat, and then only about 2 oz at a time. Friday, I made a stir-fry, and was only able to eat 2 small bites of broccoli and two small bites of beef. AND THEN it all came right back up. Not like throwing up, it just sort of crawled back up my esophagus. And the pain!! OY! Before it came back up I had chest pain that I can't even explain! Now, five days later, I am still only able to eat extremely small amounts. For dinner I had about an ounce of a turkey burger, and 2 tater tots. I stopped before the pain started this time. <----not completely stupid! But honestly, my dr. wants me to eat five small meals a day. Since my fill, I am lucky if I eat TWO small meals a day, and they are extremely small. I know I am not getting enough nutrition. I can barely fit the protein drinks in. Do I need to have an unfill? Or is this just what it is supposed to be like?? I like the scales going downward each morning, but am worried that this isn't healthy. Thanks! Hugs,

    Dumping syndrome after cherry yogurt?

After 2 episodes of cramping and diarrhea, I feel much better. It wasn't frozen yogurt, just regular yogurt. I won't make that mistake again!
  20. I ate a cherry La Yogurt for lunch today and within an hour I was sweating and had to poop so bad. Barely made it home to have diarrhea. Is this from the sugar in the yogurt?

Changing From Fluid Phase To Soft Foods

Every surgeon is different. I was given a big calendar, color coded so that I could track and follow for my food changes. Personally, after surgery I was on clear liquids day 1 and 2. Then full fluids (soups, yogurts, pudding, smoothings) for 2 weeks. I am now on pureed and blenderized for 7 days, followed by stage 2 of that, chopped, ground meats and adding a bunch more well cooked foods for 10 days. Then my maintenance plan for life.

    Has Anyone Cheated Pre Op?

I am 1 week into my 2 week pre op diet! My diet consists of 4 Protein shakes a day plus 6-8 servings of chicken/fish , raw veggies, yogurt. I have not cheated at all but today temptation was showing its ugly face! Just left surgeons office for pre op visit. My test results showed increased liver enzymes ( of course I have a fatty liver). As I was sitting waiting it hit me!! THIS IS REAL!!!! This time next week I will be sleeved!!!! Oh my I never had a real "food funeral" and it hit me like a brick!! The food porn was going crazy thru my mind!!! I actually stopped at wawa!! But NOTHING inside the store was appealing to me! Not even their mint iced coffee that I used to live on!!!! I grabbed 2 hard boiled eggs and a bottle of Water and was on my way!!! What happened to the old me??? Is she gone forever???? Thank goodness!!!! I have no real cravings!!!! Already??? Wow!!!! I'm in TOTAL SHOCK LOL Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Dumping syndrome any advice? ?

I had dunping syndrome and am sleeved. It happened with two things. Frozen yogurt --- full fat or full sugar Falafel --- deep fried fat goodness Take a look at what you ate and that should point you to what not to eat for a bit. Also dumping syndrome happens and you get it all out and then that's it. Usually within 15-30 minutes after eating. If it continues all night or past that it is not dumping it's something else.

    Need Travel Advice, Please

I went on a group trip less than 3 weeks after surgery. No one knew I had the surgery. I was scared of getting stuck, etc in front of people but overall it was totally fine. Whenever possible, order soft foods. I stuck to yogurt for breakfast and soups for dinner. Lunch was hard because people were eating sandwiches. I did lie a couple times and said I wasn't feeling well so i was able to avoid some foods. You'll be new from surgery so you wont have much of an appetite. I recommend you eat SLOW. I messed up and got stuck. It was horrible and I had to excuse myself to the bathroom. There was dessert so I did try sorbet and just a few spoonfuls. That way, people saw me eating but didn't really notice that I was eating much less than usual. You'll be fine. Just go with how you feel a s eat slowly. Good luck.

    Pushing It?

I did stick with the plan but I did have a few bites of mac salad and added parmesan cheese to my greek yogurt. Nothing major but now in my 5th week can't even take in more than 1/4 cup of mushies at a time. Guessing from other posts that the more you heal the more you feel the restriction.
