  1. My surgery is December 7th and I’ve been on clear liquids (broth, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles) since 11/29. My surgeon doesn’t even allow protein shakes pre op. I’m hungry, low energy, nauseous, dizzy, and headache…etc. I called the office and was told that this is his pre op and that ton of patients have made it through fine. I’m considering downing a protein shake a day just to survive until Tuesday. I’ve already lost 10 lbs. Is this the hardest part of the process? I’m good with the changes I have to make post op, honestly can’t wait to meet me 2.0 😊 but I’m struggling and crying tons because I’m so hungry and weak. Do people make it through surgery feeling like this beforehand?

    Pre op Diet - Help!

Pre-Op diet right now as I am on my liquid diet phase sounded like a dream 😂 Trust me first 3 days are worse during Pre-Op diet phase. But then you get hang on things. I had my surgery postponed twice and I was on my Pre-Op both times (about 7 and 10 days respectively). So I kinda got hang of it and even lost weight doing so. Third time doing it for another 10 days wasn't as difficult but I was someone who had to have something *minor or small* snack to eat. So I would graze 2 or 3 chips or spicy snack almost daily (Don't go overboard ofc and if you're the kind who can't control beyond couple of chips, then don't take this advise). But for me this kept my sanity in the Pre-Op phase. I still lost weight and got the surgery meaning my liver had shrunk. At the same time overall I had lost about 25 pounds within 2 months so they would have made a difference too. Point is 1 or 2 bites of unhealthy snack won't hurt as long as you don't slip through it.
  3. Hi all, I am having my gastric sleeve in 10 days, I have been on my pre op diet which is less than 1000 cal a day, no carbs, no refined sugar, and less than 60g carbs in other foods. IM STRUGGLING. So much so that I’ve had 5 slices of white bread today with butter. It’s making me think I have binge eating disorder and I’m worried I won’t get my surgery because of my liver. Or my recovery will be bad. Any stories welcome!!! Thank you :(

    Losing too much weight...

I'm 5'6.5" According to the CDC, as my NP stated yesterday, I'm not underweight until my BMI falls under 18 or 19. But According to bariatric standards, I'm on the low weight side and my ideal weight should be 63kg and I'm 60.something kg.so, they said some people don't lose weight, some a little, some a lot and some they have to intervene to stop it. This, I'm now terrified of. I know where I've been, I don't want that and I know what it took to get me where I am now and it was hard. Good luck with your surgery. When are you scheduled?

    Losing too much weight...

it's very common to have a 10-20 lb regain in year 3 without much effort. I was convinced it would never happen to me - BUT...it did. That said, since you're dealing with too much muscle loss, then yes -it'd be good to stop the weight loss since you need to maintain your health. I started gradually adding calories when I got down into the 130s (too low for me) ("gradually adding" since it would have been too hard to suddenly add 500 or so calories a day to my diet - it took a few weeks to get up there).
  8. I had to send a message to the “team” to get the diet instructions we supposedly “…already received at the pre-op class” but the class isn’t scheduled until Dec. 10, which is also just 5 days before my surgery. You’d think they might want to share that BEFORE the patient is required to start the 14 day diet. So, I get my Zoom pre-op class, diet instructions, virtual book, and surgery instructions just 5 days before surgery. I’m guessing chances are slim the Zoom class format will maintain patient confidentiality so they don’t broadcast our names and faces to everybody in the program and across the web.

    Losing too much weight...

I am 21 months post RNY and I am still losing weight. My HW 325 (2/20/20), SW 311 (3/9/20), CW 133. I had an abdominoplasty on 10/27/21 (weighed 145, no lipo due to little to no body fat, and I don't know what amount was removed). I saw my NP today for pist abdominoplasty and then an emergency illness x2 following abdominoplasty stay in hospital same week for bowel obstruction. My labs are normal, my NP says I am healthy BUT, I am on the low weight end and just a few pounds from being underweight according to their standards. She advised me to add in healthy fats (nuts, nut butters, avocado daily), 2 protein shakes, 3 meals, 3 snacks. I just can't eat all of that. And little to no cardio and focus on strength training with weights. They are giving me 3 months to gain more muscle mass and gain weight and fill out more. And then return for re-evaluation. IF my weight continues to drop, they are talking about reversing my RNY! I literally cried in the office, on the way home, in the pharmacy (when the girls asked me how my weight and post abdominoplasty were going....they've known us many years) and then I cried several times on and off at home. I keep thinking about the old me, the 325 lb me, the old capacity, no restriction stomach and its ability to hold more, leading to weight gain and then it getting out of control, leading me back down the hole I just struggled to dig myself out of. This scares me so bad. I mean, it's ultimately up to me, right? As in, if they ended up scheduling that procedure months down the road, it's my decision if I go or not, it's my body. I'm thinking of seeking out a different opinion on this because this just doesn't seem like it should be the conclusive answer to this issue. Does it?

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I won't get on the scale. I am still learning that this is a tool. I got frustrated with my self because I had a family emergency and I moved on to soft foods earlier. Sometimes I feel like food is stuck in my throat but I try to slow down and keep moving forward. In any case I'm walking almost 10 miles every week and using MFP. I have to count calories! I hope you all are doing well!
  12. During weeks 1-4 if you are on liquids/purees, the restriction won't kick in. You'll feel the restriction when you go on solids. This is why the Dr. suggested to limit the purees by volume, to avoid taking in a lot of cals. (And I guess to train me in the proper portion sizes for later) After the surgery gas dissipated, I haven't experienced stomach pain. While eating or otherwise. Had some discomfort a couple of times when eating puree too fast (big spoonful, not waiting enough time in between) This is more or less what I followed. Week 1. Used a 2oz medicine cup. One every 10-15 minutes. More like 5 minutes toward the end. If too fast, would get stomach pain. Week 2. Liquid diet, protein shakes, etc. I could drink a protein shake (12 oz), in about 30 mins. Just a sip at a time, no particular wait in between. 3-4 shakes per day. Week 3 - 4. Pureed phase. 2 Shakes. 2 snacks. 2 meals (whatever protein was for lunch/dinner, pureed with salsa, broth or mayo). meals limited to 3 fl. oz. (~ 1/3 cup) Week 5. Solids. Dr. suggested 2 shakes, 1-2 snacks, and 2 meals. Meals consisting of 4 oz total. 2 oz protein, 1oz vegs. and 1 oz carbs (optional).

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Welcome to the club Daisy! The first few days can be really tough (were for me) but it's amazing how quickly you get back to normal. I am 15 days after my surgery and have still only lost only 2lbs since I got home on day 2. I'm eating around 600 calories a day at this stage but I did lose a fair bit before and during my admission so am trying not to panic. Went for a 2.5 mile walk this morning at a good pace and it was OK other than a big crash in energy about 1.5 miles in (glycogen running out???) Saw my surgeon yesterday, he's happy, and I'm back to work next week so trying to make the most of the final few days at home and get some christmas shopping done now! Hope everyone else is getting used to life with their new teeny stomach. I'm on pureed food now and it's amazing after 10 days on liquids. I never want to see broth again ever. 😝 Edited to say - I am really hungry a lot of the time - I hope this settles when I'm on solids.
  14. I'm a few days post op and feeling okay overall. I've started with the liquid phase and currently I'm making banana smoothies with added protein that I drink throughout the day. I drink water in the morning, wait 10 minutes and then I sit down and slowly get one glas of smoothie down in 30 minutes. It's maybe 200ml or 2dl. Is that too much in one sitting this early on? I don't feel nausea or too full, but I do have some pain in my stomach most of the time, but that's pretty normal this soon after surgery? Should I just see how it goes further down or does anyone feel like this is absolutely too much and that I should take longer? Sent from my KB2003 using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. The stats tend to say the average weight loss after about 5 years is about 65% of the weight you have to lose to put yourself in the healthy BMI range. Some lose more. Some lose less. Some keep it off. Some don’t & happily settle at a higher weight. This can be from choice, genetics, lifestyle, complacency, health, etc. For example it’s not uncommon for people to experience a 10-20lb bounce back regain around year 3. I think some surgeons give the average expected weight loss to keep expectations realistic. Mine didn’t but he asked me what weight I’d like to reach. I said 60kg because that was the lowest weight I’d reached the many, many times I’d lost weight in the past & it gave me a bmi of about 23. He said it was a realistic goal. I exceeded it (135% of the weight I had to lose). My lowest weight was 48.2. For about 14 months I’ve been about 49kg but I waver between 48.5 & 49.5. But I’m close to that 3yr mark & you never know what the future will bring so I try to be realistic about that. The average is probably a good goal but no one says you can’t exceed it & set new goals if you want & if you can can without undue restrictions & limitations on your life. Even though we’re guilty of regularly checking that scale & we know all our stats, ultimately, it’s not about the number on that scale. It’s about you being happy & healthy & enjoying your life.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Sleeved on 10/18. I stalled about two weeks ago. I freaked out and reached out to the nutritionist but she didn’t say it was normal. I’m so glad it happens and I wasn’t overeating. But since then I haven’t checked the scale because I was checking it everyday. Now I’m nervous but I know I’m losing weight because my clothes are looser.

    Started liquid diet today

The liquid pre-op is tough. Mine was just 10 days, so yours is longer than what I had to do! Try to keep busy, distract yourself, if allowed eat sugar-free jello or sugar-free popsicles to give the illusion of eating solid food, drink broth when you want something savory and just hang in there!
  18. Today is day 1 for my liquid diet: protein shakes and clear fluids only (Plus sugar free popsicles, 0 calorie flavored waters, clear broths, sugar free jello) I have ~80-100 lbs to lose. Yesterday I cleaned out my fridge and freezer, and stocked it with just the shakes/foods/drinks I can have. It's nice to have a clean fridge, and 0 wrong choices available. Mentally, it will be much tougher. I've written down 3 motivator/values in my planner so daily I will be able to refocus and remind myself why I'm doing this and what the outcome can be. Carbs are a precursor to the production of serotonin in the brain, and I know for myself that low carb diets will make me depressed. I'm worried about that. @huskymama had reported that she's already lost 10# in a week on this diet, and of course, that it's really difficult. But 10# is a lot, and that gives me hope. So thanks, huskymama! PS-does anyone know what percentage the liver shrinks on the preop diet?
  19. First, I am so happy you've already lost 10#. Way to stick to that freaking miserable diet!! Second, I started my liquid diet today. After 3 hours, it's ok so far--hah! But I know I'll be facing what you're facing very soon. I have written down at the top of each day in my planner to think on 1. Freedom (from food/cooking/cleanup/obsessing/trying to make choices/decisions related to food) 2. Relief (from feeling too full, bloated, less than clear-headed, guilty, due to too much food/food choices.) 3. Loveliness (from how the diet will help to heal/remodel/clear and clean out my system and body.) I don't know if that helps, but that's where I'm trying to start. Thanks for posting--it's really great to see things working and a role model for being tough throughout the diet.
  20. I only have/had 80 pounds to loose I have been on the liquid diet for a week now and already lost 10 pounds. My surgery isn’t until December 22. I have been starving for a week where my hubby can hear my tummy growling and my blood sugars are in the mid 200s with medication! I meet with my dietician in the morning. I am hoping she will shed some light on what more I can do. I’m only allowed 2 protein shakes a day also. Anyone else starving? If so what do you do that helps?
  21. Whole bunch of non-scale victories lately. 1. I am no longer morbidly obese because my BMI is under 40. Combined with the resolution of my comorbidities, I no longer qualify for surgery. 😁 2. My A1c is 5.1. A physician friend of mine said he hasn't seen anyone under 5.4 in a long time. 3. I needed to get into the bed of the ranch truck today and the tailgate was blocked off... so I went over the side using the (not small) tire. My balance is so much better! 4. I can do burpees like I'm on springs now, at least 10 in a row. Before I would do what are popularly known as "grief burpees" (look it up on Google Video search). 5. I got in trouble with my sleep doctor. It took me 6 weeks to get a video appointment and my CPAP (technically APAP) was choking me with all the air it was putting out. It's locked down, so I found the manual (in Russian), translated it, guessed the password, and reset the lower bound. I sleep better now (and my suspicion was correct, previous range was 10-20 cm H2O, now that I've lowered it, I average about 8 over a night). 6. I ran a mile for the first time ever in my entire life. It wasn't very fast (10:26) but it was a real mile and there was no walking or stopping.

    May Surgeries - check in!

You all are doing great!!! Congrats!! I'm still at my same 69 lb lost since surgery/87 lb since March. Haven't lost a thing since Oct 25th and no idea why. Total inches lost last month (Oct thru Nov) was only 1.75 too when previous months had been close to 10 inches or more. I usually measure on the 7th of each month but checked a few measurements last night and it looks like there won't be much loss this past month either. Don't know what's going on. Never had a stall last more than a few weeks. I tried shaking things up by eating things off plan/lil more calories/lil less too. NONE of it worked.
  23. So as not to hijack an existing thread, I thought I'd start a new one. Since I began looking into bariatric surgery in 2019, I've done much research and reading. On the internet, I limited myself to sites that I knew were reputable and were evidence-based (i.e., Mayo Clinic) rather than sites that were trying to sell surgery. Once I was accepted into my program, I watched videos suggested by the program (i.e., Dr. Matthew Weiner) and took to heart the information I was given from my program. I came into the program with a lot of pre-existing knowledge on nutrition and diet having grown up with a Type 1 diabetic father and myself a Type 2. Despite that knowledge base, I obviously wasn't applying it or I would not have been to the point where I was considering surgery. One of the hardest things I had to do throughout my surgery preparation appointments and meetings was to go in and actually listen. I accepted that my way wasn't working and if I was going to proceed with a body and life-altering surgery, I needed to adopt what I was being taught. As you can see in my stats, it's worked. But I know I'm not done learning, maintaining and working on making good decisions and healthy choices for the long-term. In my classes, the dietician warned about social-media, weight-loss surgery groups. I admit that I move in and out of some groups. The overall lack of information and sharing of misinformation boggles my mind. It certainly proved that there are programs and doctors simply out to make money and there are patients willing to believe anything they are told without doing their own research or taking accountability for their own actions. I was grateful to find this site and have a source of information rather than opinion. I was happy to hear from WLS veterans who have gone through the process and how they are successfully maintaining. I wanted to hear what those experiences were so that I can learn from them. I did not want them to sugar-coat the truth and I did not expect unmitigated "support." If my understanding or behavior was counterproductive, I wanted to hear that. I needed to hear that. I still do. There seems to be a misconception that in order to be supportive, someone needs to say your choices are ok. Being truthful with someone, does not always mean saying what and how you are doing things is ok.

    Stomach spasms

I’m less than a week from my SADI and I get stomach spasms when I have certain things. Water and broth is fine, liquid Tylenol and jello though both trigger it. It only lasts maybe 5-10 seconds then subsides. I just assumed that I’m still healing and that it will go away.
  25. My doctor said it was about the liver, I have a verified fatty liver via CT scan and enzyme levels (previously done by primary). I’m required to do a 10 day preop liquid diet. I have a coworker who is about 150 pounds heavier than me and she had to do a much longer liquid diet preop. They’re hope was significant weight loss and liver shrinkage.
