  1. I had surgery on 10/20/09 (Tuesday) at 10 am, rode home 2 hours from Dallas around noon, rested at home, took the pain medicine that night so I could sleep, rested the next day, just kind of laying around on the couch and then went to work on Thursday. The pain in my stomach was similar to starting a new gym routine from scratch and being sore from that and I had pain in my shoulder that was similar to a sprained ankle.

  5. Found this in OH forum, hope they don't mind me sharing it here, but it is such a great explanation for why we all go through the inevitable stalls! I take great comfort in knowing this information, so that I don't blame stalls on what I am eating or not doing etc. This explanation is courtesy of Diana Cox. A "stall" at this point is inevitable, and here is why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.
  6. Hi, I am new here and scared shitless. I did so well for so long, even when my eating became more or less normal. I didn't go back to binging, but I wasn't sticking to the plan. I have slowly been allowing my weight to creep up. I didn't worry I guess because I still felt good, my clothes felt good, I felt sexy, I am active.....but now my size 10 jeans are tight, I really see the weight in my pictures, and I FEEL like that fat girl is trying to reemerge. I am trying desperately to get back on a plan, shrink my pouch, protein first, no sugar......but I am spiraling out of control. I can't be that girl again, I don't want to live at all if it has to be fat. I guess I just needed to say it. No one else in my family is heavy or ever has been. No one understands what it feels like to be addicted to food.

What's the worst thing you've done?

I dont have one story either b/c gorging myself on food was an everyday thing pretty much. everday id leave for work and stop of to get breakfast usually at dd or mcds and id get one of those bakery sandwiches hash browns and a large latte or from mcds itd be 4 hashbrowns and 2 sausage biscuits. As soon as id be almost done at work i would think where i could sneak to eat for lunch. if it was: Subway- id dog down a foot long sandwich wendys- spicy chicken sandwich with large fries an order of nuggets, 2 bacon cheeseburgers and lf frosty taco bell- one of those border bowls 2 tacos and a burrito or 8-10 tacos pizza- 2 to 3 slices or a chicken roll and slice then id go home and start cooking dinner and eat that and then snack later on. thinkng about this now makes me feel sick to my banana sized stomach. even though its only a little over two months out i really dont miss the food, i dont miss that feeling that i have to unbutton my pants cus i cant breathe.

    Day 10 and not hungry

This is very normal.... I am at about 10 and still have days I am not hungry. I have to remind myself to get in all the protien and liquids. As long as you do that you are sAfe. I drink the premier shakes from Costco. They have 30 grams of protien each. Continue to sip, sip, sip liquids. I had many days in the beginning I felt weak that is normal.also. Best Wishes

  11. Hi everyone. I have posted once, but been a reader for about a month when I started this journey seriously. My surgery (VSG) is scheduled for Wednesday, the 21st here in Austin, Tx. You all have helped me get to this point, reading of your own personal journeys and reading the support you provide to one another. Such an awesome group! Per my surgeon, I will spend one night in the hospital. My surgery is scheduled for 10:30. I have never had surgery so this is a new experience for me. Surgeon has me on a two week pre-op diet of a minimum of 70 grams of protein and no more than 30 grams of carbs daily. The carbs have been the roughest. I have been close most days, but been more at 40 rather than the 30. Any doubts I'm having feel like anxiety rather than legitimate questioning of whether this is the right thing to do. For the first time in my life, I feel like I am doing something just for me. Wish me luck and please add me to your prayers. I'll let you know how it goes....Diane

  15. So this morning I headed down to Lahey at 0-dark-30 before the morning commuter traffic and settled in to wait...nervous as a cat, I realized, and excited at the same time. There were 3 of us. One was a woman who currently has the lap band, has had no complications in 6 years with it, but had lost 80 lb. but it was not successful to get the other 50 or 60 lb. she would like to achieve; she is wanting the by pass procedure. The other woman wanted by pass surgery too. I was thinking sleeve or band...and vacillating between the two, having done my due diligence and thought with my family history I might one day need my "absorption" of medications and nutrients to be intact and may need access to my stomach through my mouth for testing...I was correct in my self recommendation...I should not have by pass surgery, for just those reasons. I met with the dietician, and then the nurse practioner...and then a psychologist. Great experience! Wonderful team there...I felt like I was in good hands. The nurse practioner remembered me from the info session a couple weeks ago...she had noted I had asked really good questions...and noted today I had really done my homework and knew the procedures and possible complications well. I am a really good candidate for the sleeve (assuming my upper GI series does not show I have GERD or a big hiatal hernia. And if that all goes well, and assuming the surgeon makes that recommendation as well, that is the surgery I will likely have...hopefully before the end of September. I am also a good candidate for the lap band...BUT...I might not be such a low risk candidate in 10 years when I am 80, if I were to have a problem with the band requiring another surgery...so that is what I am thinking today. And all this is, of course, predicated on my insurance covering the surgery. My BMI is high enough but I don't know that I can have documented proof that I have been seriously obese for these last 5 years...because when I went to the doctor I would decline being weighed!!! So we will see. I have an appoinment in 1 mo...for the GI series and appointment with nurse practioner...and then a morn later the last week in August I meet again with the dietician and finally with the surgeon...and get a surgery date! I left really "UP" and relieved...and confident that this is the right thing for me. So whether I have the sleeve or band...I think I can do this and do well. Christine

  17. If you check the post-op section of the board, there's a stickied thread asking members how much weight (if any) they have regained since reaching goal. There's a lot of great responses there. From what I remember, those that did say they had regained, it was in the 5-10 pound range. I'd encourage you to read through all the posts there. It really helped me feel more confident in my chances for long term success.

    I hate feeling ungrateful!!!

Wow, 53 pounds in 5 months! Congratulations!!! That's over 10 pounds a month lost. It's pretty easy to get discouraged when you see others losing faster than you, and I think that is a struggle for many people both pre and post surgery. I'm sure that I'll be doing the same thing after my surgery. I'm currently trying to lose 10 more pounds before surgery and I keep yo-yoing, it's totally frustrating, but I do notice that with almost 30 pounds off I can move more, my clothes are fitting a little bit better, and I'm not as tired all the time. Try to stay focused on the positive things that you can do now that you couldn't do before. From the pre-surgery side, I think you're doing fantastic!!

    No restriction

I am at a point of being depressed after having my sugery. I have had two fills (the last fill on 9/28/10 with 6cc total). I am able to eat whatever I want to eat and not getting any restriction. I am wondering if this was a complete waste. I have lost 12lbs but I know people who are two months out and has lost more than me. I don't know if this is a mind thing or what. Need help. :cursing:
  20. Thank you! I am only 10 days post op and went to a cookout today. Had my water and pudding. Not too bad. This was a choice I made and can live with it!!!

Getting there - slow but sure

Congrats. Your under 200 in 5 months. That is my goal lol. The other day I was a little upset and discouraged and a strange thought came to my mind. I would have probably been up 5 lbs instead of down 32lbs if i hadn't gotten sleeved 10 weeks ago. This thought gave me so much motivation. I found a pare of slacks size 16 i'm not sure who the own of this was (whether it was my moms or my old pants) but when i slipped that baby on without any issues I was in a daze. People at work notice every single day that i am looking much slimmer. I am so happy. I am 6 lbs away from being 227 which is how much i weighed when my bf and i started dating 5 years ago. I remember being comfortable at 227 so I can imagine when i hit 199. I'm looking at the bright side of this all and i couldn't be more happy. Congrats!

    Caffeine

I've wondered about caffeine if it really needs to be forbidden forever. I was hospitalized for depression once about 10 years ago and they wouldn't allow any caffeine at all in the unit. Everything decaf. Because it's a stimulant I guess but since then, I've wondered how it would fit into a healthy life. I was a diet coke addict until June 9th (surgery date lol) so I'm sure it will be a huge change for me not to have them anymore.
  23. How are you with drinking shakes? I know we should be getting Protein from food but you have to do what you have to do. Here are some suggestions http://www.bodybuilding.com/content/ultimate-list-40-high-protein-foods.html Some Protein Bars aren't bad but most are junk. The Rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein = 10 calories in order for it to be a good source of protein. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. I've made many big changes, but the most unbelievable to me was fried foods. Even after LapBand I was eating fried foods all the time. A typical daily meal was Popeye's fried chicken strips. My weight loss had basically stopped after 10 months post op. I finally gave up my deep fried everything 20 months post op. It has totally changed how I eat now and I am not craving lousy foods anymore. Slowly my weight has started to go down again.
