    Concerned

This is 100% true. It took me some time to stop comparing myself to people that started at higher weights than me. I always felt like I wasn't losing fast enough but that is simply not true. The weight loss is different for everyone and is influenced by many factors. I would consult with your surgeon to determine if you are on track.

    Questions

My surgery involves a sleeved stomach and to be honest I have no idea how long food stays in our stomach. I get full pretty fast but as long as I don't eat fast I can eat what I put in front of me. Which admittedly is about half a cup. Sometime 2/3 of a cup. I'm 4 months out though... As for me the first week was liquids and second was puree via my surgeons nutrition guidelines. I struggled most the first week because I had very little appetite and jello HURT to eat. It felt like my chest got really tight and my stomach felt like it did flips. I avoided it like the plague after I realized it wasn't just the gas doing it because everything else didn't do that to me. I also didn't have increased acid issues, but then I've been on acid reducers for YEARS! I take famotidine for my EOS because it's the only acid reducer that doesn't interact with my TN meds (all the other ones are flagged for fatal reactions with my meds and even though I haven't had a flare in a year and haven't needed the pills I NEED to be able to take them just in case of a flare... for my sanity). If you're not taking an acid reducer you should ask your doctor for a prescription or call them and ask if you can buy some over the counter. And, some people do have a dairy sensitive stomach for a while. I, myself, lucked out and am pretty much fine with dairy. I'm actually better with it after surgery then I was before lol
  3. Also, whether you are willing/able to do a KETO or other very low carb plan post op. I tend to get low blood sugar so can do a lower carb, but KETO-ish leaves me wiped out, extremely low energy. I’ve watched friends drop HUGE amounts of weight VERY fast on KETO type, and suffered no blood sugar issues, but once they go back to regular balanced eating adding carbs back in, they pack the weight back on, and often times even more.😫 So if your post op plan is KETO-ish you can lose LOTS and FAST. As wise folks have stated however, whatever post op eating plan you choose, you’d be well served to try for a version of it that you can live with for the long haul- adding more calories in maintenance stage, but not having felt so carb deprived that you revert to unhealthy behaviors when it’s all said and done. Good luck!
  4. Hi my name is Michelle and I am 50 years old and live in North Carolina. I have my first all day appointment where I meet the surgeon, nutritionist, psych evaluation etc. I was told I have to do all my pre op work same day. I plan on being there all day. I do have to do the endoscopy but I think that is a separate day. i was told to bring a healthy snack because there are breaks. No fast food or junk food. I am a big water drinker so no problem there but I need some ideas for healthy snacks. It’s an hour drive so something that doesn’t need refrigerating. Has anyone wanted to have a “last meal” you know stuff that you can’t eat after surgery? Is it a bad idea? Also I am listening to the audio book and was told to download app for this forum but I can’t get it to work on my iPhone. Anyone else have this issue? i am excited to make some new friends here and read everyone’s stories of how things are going.
  5. I am so sorry I missed all of your questions, I had a graduate Friday and she was the last of our babies to graduate and have been busy planning for her special day! Yes, it was that fast! Highmark was great, I had made my deduction the year and did not have to pay anything out of pocket except for a few small and I mean very small bills! Yes, after the lapband, I gained most of my weight back I was at 298 before being banded and at 289.9 the day of surgery for the RNY!

    Help

I felt the same way for the first two weeks post op, it'll get better once you introduce puree/soft foods into your diet. I swear the day I was able to puree some food and eat it I felt 10x better. I was still weak and if I stood up to fast I got dizzy but I didn't feel shaky anymore or exhausted.
  7. Your extra skin is pulling you down some which can attribute to you thinking you are getting "two small". Also when we loose the weight so fast it's not by means of straight up exercise so we all tend to look like that at first. Bulking up the muscle will help but over time you won't look like that anymore either. It took me some time to not look what I considered "sickly"

    Needing a pep talk!

Yea with insurance there's always a multitude of hurdles before surgery... Mine was fast but still took 3 months
  9. summerset

    Sick all the time

Just asking because I have my intolerances as well. The RNY is not as forgiving as the MGB. It can be the food itself, the amount of food and how fast or slow I eat.

    Pros and cons

That's unlucky Wisconsin I had RNY and not had any major issues lost weight real fast. Changed my metabolism completely.

    Any new surgery dates yet?

I didn't have a date before since my first visit was around mid February. Luckily the fast track allowed me to get everything completed more quickly and before things go way out of whack, so I got the call at the first of the week and I am scheduled for June 18! I didn't expect it so quickly. I had taken care of most everything, but then having major surgery in addition to work, life, etc. is always a bit overwhelming. Plus, the day after I got that news I learned that I likely have a basal cell carcinoma (type of skin cancer) on my shoulder; I get the biopsy Tuesday. It won't stop the surgery, but that is never news that you want to hear!

    Insurance approval for another revision

I have highmark as well! I have my apt with my surgeon June 15th to see if he will approve me to have the surgery. They really approved it that fast ? Did you have any regain after the sleeve as well?

    Success So Far

As far as I am concerned there is no slow or fast, all weight loss is to be celebrated, that said, there is too much focus on scale weight, we neglect too many times the non scale successes..one being improved health and frame of mind, sounds like you have achieved both, well done, keep up the great work.

    Food Funeral

I went Bat Poop crazy - Ran all over town eating out and going nutz! Nothing wrong with it if it helps clear your mind and get ready go for it! I know you wont believe me but once your mind and surgery are in order over time FOOD will never be a focus again, I have to force myself to eat now. Do me a favor eat a big sub and some fast food for me, so i can live vicariously thru you
  15. I should also add - they wanted a clearance from my doctor too. Once they had that, its was all good. Try not to worry, the clearance should make it fine. Good luck! Be sure to join their Facebook group for fast track patients after the surgery - its really a supportive place. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Funeral

The past 5 years was my food funeral! LOL!! I ate so much crap over the years, always promising myself that "tomorrow" would be the day I would eat healthy. Once I started with the nutritionist, I made small changes (cutting out soda, limiting fast food to 1 meal per week, etc), and then when it came down to the pre-op diet, I was just ready to do it!
  17. I started looking into this surgery because I was pre-diabetic and starving all the time. Like I just finished a huge meal, and my stomach hurt, but I still wanted to eat and eat and eat. My hunger has been increasing and getting worse over the past 10 years, along with gradual increases in my fasting blood sugar and other symptoms of metabolic syndrome like skin tags. My dad has diabetes (and got it when he was about 5 years older than I am now), so I knew what was coming. The thing that really excited me about the surgery was that it provides a mechanism to reset your metabolism, to actually CHANGE your hormonal balance and your set point so that you naturally feel satisfied at a lower weight, and eating less food with less hunger. Now I am 2.5 months out, and I really feel it working - with the smaller stomach, it gets full faster, so ghrelin (a hormone that your stomach makes when it is empty that makes you feel hungry) starts to DECREASE quickly after you take your first few bites. Studies show that ghrelin levels are about 50% lower after bariatric surgery than before. And that has an effect - you really, seriously, truly feel much less hungry, even though you are eating way less. In contrast, normally when you go on a diet, your ghrelin levels INCREASE compared to when you started. Studies show that after a 3-6 month diet without surgery, your ghrelin levels will increase by 50%. And that has an effect - you are much more hungry and so you want to eat even more and gain the weight back - it may even make you feel like an addict! Since before my surgery, I would often feel hungry even when my stomach felt full, I can totally see why you'd be scared that you'd still feel really hungry even when your new small stomach is full. And I can tell you from experience - being hungry with a full stomach feels miserable! I can see why you'd be scared of that! But I really want to assure you - the surgery works as advertised. You will feel satisfied, even when you are eating way less food than before. For me, the change in my hunger is like night and day - it's amazing!

    Picky eater

For this to be successful for anyone, it is necessary to adjust your diet within your individual tastes in accordance with the recommendations from your program. Basically, protein and vegetables are the mainstays of your daily intake with some other things added as you go along. If you mean picky like only eating fast food and junk food then you are going to have problems. My friends sister had GBP (paying cash) and lost a grand total of 12 pounds in a year because the only things she "liked" were chocolate milk. macaroni and cheese and cashews. It is important to be open to change your diet unless you want to stay at a dangerously unhealthy weight.

    Too much or too little?

yes - it depends on how fast you walk. I don't stroll, but at the same time, I'm not a "race walker", either. I used 2 miles per hour in my tracker to get that number (176 calories). But I don't think my tracker is any more reliable than the others. But as I said, I don't really think about the calories I'm burning since I don't deduct them from the calories I'm eating, so it's not a huge deal to me if this thing is off. P.S. I just realized I made a mistake in my above message. I put in 2 miles an hour for 60 minutes of walking. So to walk four miles would take me two hours - so that's 353 calories. How long does it take you to walk 4-4.5 miles?

    Too much or too little?

@catwoman7 oh yeah I’m aware they’re not 100% accurate but other than an app or calculator how are you meant to work it out? Your tracker is definitely wrong tho as google says 4 miles burns a lot more than that all depending on size and how fast you’re walking.. I just know that I’m walking for pretty much an hour and a half a day so I should be burning a fair amount but it’s not reflecting on the scales. So off putting.

    Too much or too little?

Hello I'm from Australia also. But I'm male and in 8 months I have lost 70kgs but I've been very low calories and very strict for the most part. I'm now in maintenance at that calorie range so in my mind you'll need less calories to lose weight.... I was on max 750 cal up until very recently and I was losing very fast.. I'm now at maybe 1500 a day and stable weight.

    Lap Band to Sleeve?

why does he/she wanting it out? are you having issues? I think the dr's that are doing this is just trying to make more money.... (my opinion) My two cents, for what it's worth..... Leave it alone if you're not having issues. For one, getting a revision paid by insurance is damn near impossible for those of us who followed the rules and didn't gain all the weight back. I was banded in 2009 at 232#, ER band removal 2017 at 143#..... started looking for a dr to do a revision and was told over and over again..... You don't weigh enough. fast forward 2.5 years and hell trying to keep the weight off i was up to 173#..... and trust in the fact that it was hard not to gain more... i went hungry, diet pills, lax., went to crossfit 4-5 days a week and still..... and for people that say... just eat like you did when you had the band..... F U... it's is damn near impossible to do that. Two weeks after the band was gone.... hunger came back with a vengeance. I had forgotten what "hunger" felt like.... well it sucks. So after 2.5 years of nothing.... i had my mind set that i was going to Mex to have the MGB.... but as luck would have it i found a dr. 10 min away from my office. He and i talked and he agreed to do a revision... but i had to agree to the sleeve and pay 14k out of pocket.... which i did. that was 38 weeks ago today (8/28/19). Went in weighing 173#.... today i'm at 126ish...(125-127). From a size 10 to a 2-4 Do i miss my band..... EVERY DAY. Do i wish i still had her.... EVERY DAY.

    Too much or too little?

You've had great success with your weight loss so far and as we get closer to goal it does slow down. I wouldn't say you were overeating on your calorie intake. How are you feeling with those calories? Feel hungry or do they satisfy you? And at about 10months out you'd be expected to be eating more, but perhaps those more experienced with the stage you are at could tell you if you are eating a little too many. Some people have had some success in breaking stalls by temporarily increasing their calories for a week or two and then dropping back. Other have had success with intermittent fasting, don't know if that's your thing. Keep working on those fluids! It's a shame your nutritionist isn't doing telehealth appointments at the moment. I will be chatting with my dietician next week over the phone..I know its not the same as a face to face but it useful for me to touch base with her.
  24. These 4 people are 3 too many and if you could get away with it, i would just tell that person that you're having hernia surgery (SX). I had Band SX in 2009 (232#) when WLS was still "taboo". I told my now ex husband, two sons, and two friends. I thought surely they could keep a secret...... NOPE. I was blindsided one day with..... Hey i heard you had WLS. I was like a deer in headlights. Then i had to fess up. When she (band) was removed in 2017 (143#) i made it no secret that it was gone. Fast forward.....2019 (173#) i decided to revise to the sleeve due to the weight gain (30#) and I had the money to do it (divorce settlement 14K). The only person that knows is my husband. Everyone was told i had Hernia SX, which was true. I did have a double hernia repair. I went in on 8/28/19 Wednesday and i was back at work on monday. by my wedding day 9/26/19, i was down 20lbs. People didn't think anything of the WL because they knew i was dieting for the wedding. Today I'm at 125-127. My weight has become a nonissue. KNOW THIS..... if you tell more than one..... it will get out. People will give you their "unsolicited" advice and or thoughts. You will get the .... Why? can't you lose it the "natural" way? I know a lot of people the SX didn't work WLS, you might die.... and the best one.... You don't weight enough for WLS..... Just a few to let you know. I love the fact that NO ONE knows this time... SO MUCH BETTER.
