    Fall from grace :(

@@nprcowboy First of all - you should not worry about disappointing anyone! This is a difficult journey and no one is perfect! I'm sorry you've had such a rough time emotionally. Maybe a different medication would help your mental health while not causing weight gain. There's so many different meds and combinations. In the meantime, hopefully you are in therapy to deal with your depression and emotional state. In terms of weight loss and your sleeve - it's still there - and will be ready to help you. Try going back to basics - cut out Pasta, bread, rice, sweets, soda, etc. Once you detox from carbs - you'll feel much better all around. High Protein, low carbs - focusing on protein first. Try adding a little exercise - release those endorphins. Stay strong - you can do this!!!
  2. Hi. Many of you followed my story as I went through hell with complications from surgery. 6 hospital stays, feeding tubes, ambulance etc..... I went through hell to finally be OK. I went from 308 to 171 as of this past March. I looked great and felt great. But....... A heavy depression set in early this year. Work stress, marital issues, financial issues etc..... I got so depressed I tried to take my life twice!! I am blessed I survived twice I know this. After hospital stays to get better they put me on meds including abilify which is notorious for weight gain. I've gained 40lbs in 4 months and have been as high as 216 for a low a few months ago of 171. Depression is setting in as I went thru hell to get to that 171 now I'm obese again. Had to buy bigger clothes each month. I'm shocked with the sleeve how much I can eat now. The meds slow the metabolism and make it to where I'm not even aware how much I am eating. Please help, how do I get the weight off now? 40lbs seems daunting when sleeve doesn't seem to be helping anymore. I am sorry if this post disappoints many. I'm doing better mentally, no thoughts of hurting self and wasn't depressed until recently due to weight gain. I don't know how to get back what I went by thru hell to get. From the poster boy of hell to success to falling from grace. Thank u all again for your support when I was so sick. Could use some more support now. Sent from my SM-J700T1 using the BariatricPal App

I don't even know what to eat

Hi there I am 6 weeks pregnant and 2 years post surgery. Super worried about the weight gain but not feeling too bad. Have been very tired though. I have an eating plan from my nutritionist which would have me eating all day everyday! How did you get on with your appointments? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. @@mi75 Acceptance is the key regarding your weight gain. Don't be so hard on yourself. The same has happened to me and I have been soda free for about a month now. I found a wonderful Protein drink...syntrax nectar..that I love! I had been off of peotein drinks for a long time...sleeved in 2012...because they all tasted like crap to me. I eat good carbs and nothing white...no sugar. I am taking one minute at a time. I do not log my food...for me if I did that food would be all I thought about. I make sure I get my daily protein requirements in and good carbs too. I don't worry so much about the fat and I do not count calories. I also set a timer as to not drink anything 30 minutes after I eat. I am disabled, to look at me you would not know, so I get very little exercise. I love to walk but can't for very long. I have never liked exercising anyway. I am about 25 lbs from where I want to be. Lost 125 lbs and gained 20+ back due to some meds that I no longer take and doing things I was not supposed to do. Hope this helps. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    TRULY NEED SERIOUS HELP

  6. @@OKCPirate I agree with @@LipstickLady - you don't tell her! Let her decide to pursue WLS or not. She may have PCOS if the weight coincided with puberty. Stress will really mess with her hormones and can cause weight gain. Although she's probably a great candidate for WLS - it's not something anyone wants to hear from a parent. 7. Being able to wrap a towel completely around my body. Tired of hearing." "You'd look amazing if you lost some weight." "You have a pretty face for a big girl." Buying an arm strap for my phone that actually fits my arms. Being pregnant without the fear of people not knowing if I'm overweight or pregnant. Tired of not wanting to go out in public and enjoy my life because of my weight. Fear of other people's responses and judgments bc of my weight gain. Not having to hide or feel invisible anymore. I feel like people often don't take me seriously bc of my weight or judge me bc of my food choices (whether healthy or not healthy). Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I agree, sabotages and haters lol But, realistically, this is life right? We will all face eating bad sometimes and we give in. Lifestyle changes are what our mutual goal Is. What I feel is this. I've been post op almost 2 years now. I eat like crap at times, sometimes a lot. I know it's not good and can lead to weight gain. I'm human and become more mindful and eat " like a sleever " is suppose to. I was truly devastated one time when I was told on here I was eating To Many calories. I was losing fast and I needed them. I didn't know that at the time and my whole mindset was shot. So people who may eat lousy sometimes, it's life. We have our whole life ahead of us and as long as we know the repercussions of our actions .... It's ok. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Weight Loss Question

For me the losing is sorta based on momentum. I was on a pretty good pace going into the surgery.....and was amazed at the amount of weight gain that occurred during the hospital stay.....it flushed out quickly and things really amped up in the weeks ahead. I'm guessing that it'll take you a couple weeks and things will kick into gear for you, too.

    Breast reduction questions

I had a breast reduction prior to the sleeve. I went from a really large I think DD or larger to a high B cup, which increased to a C with weight gain. The surgeries are nothing alike, I needed more help with the reduction because of the initial restriction in movement. I did have to lie on my back for both operations to sleep but couldn't use the restroom on my own after the reduction. I don't remember how long until I drove but I remember every bump in the road when in a car was uncomfortable. Hope that helps
  11. How's everyone doing? Has anyone completed their 1 year post on visit? Have goals been met? My personal goal was to be at or under 200 pounds for my one year. I've been sitting pretty at 220. A 6 pound weight gain since my last post 2 months ago. But I'm happy to report I'm back on track and I had a serious convo with a woman from my surgeons braitric support group. She's 2 years out and has gained 50 pounds after reaching goal so she's struggling to "get back to basics " as they say. I know it's a silly thought but at one point I did feel as though I can eat old guilty pleasures again like a whole bagel with butter (it took me 2 hours to eat and I vomited after because I got really sick), or nachos and cheese with Hot dog (AMC movie date with hubby). I now realize I can't and won't allow myself to eat like that anymore because the sleeve will not work if I don't continue eating right and working my Buty off at the gym. I'm ready to continue my journey and make the next 6 months count. Who's with me?
  12. I have read that having your gallbladder removed can cause weight gain has anyone experienced this at all or any changes in digestion?

    My RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery

Quick update...weight on the scale this afternoon was 255 so the weight is coming down again and hopefully continues back to 247 and lower. I'm still at a loss at what caused the huge upswing. I've had 4-5 pound swings whenever I hit a stall, but 13 pounds was a bit of an overkill and scared the crap out of me. I did drink a ton of Crystal Light yesterday; more than normal...had to be around 100 ounces...or at least 96. I ended up having to urinate constantly during the day so if the weight gain was through Water retention I don't know what caused it. One of these days I'll have to study up on the actual science behind weight loss.

    WEIGHT GAIN

@@Gaby86 Based on your comment - I'm assuming you're having difficulty eating healthy during this pre-op phase (and this wasn't just Water retention). It's very difficult and a huge change for us. I found therapy with the psychologist in my bariatric program very helpful in dealing with cravings and emotional/mindless eating. I would encourage anyone to get therapy pre-op and post-op - as this is more mental than physical. Plan out your meals - make sure you have healthy alternatives available at all times. Bring food to work so you don't get tempted to eat unhealthy (or end up grabbing fast food). Eat from small plates - using small utensils. Eat slowly (put utensil down between bites), don't eat in front of the TV. Try having 5-6 small meals every 3 hours (while awake) - concentrating on Protein and produce. No Pasta, bread, pizza, rice, candy, Cookies, etc. Once you eat them - you'll crave more and sabotage yourself. Cut out soda or sweetened drinks, fruit juice, etc. Drink water or non-caloric drinks. You can do this - and you'll be in a much better position to be successful post-op! A weight gain during this time can effect insurance approval. Hopefully that's not the case with you. Stay strong!!!
  15. Hi everyone, I have to say that today was a huge set back for me, I had my fourth weight management appointment and was told I gained 3 pounds. It is hard not to feel like a failure, I just feel as though I will never be able to change unhealthy habits. Anyone out there that has experienced this or is going through this? Any advice or tips? Does this affect insurance approval?
  16. @@finding_onederland I had a small hiatus hernia over 20 years ago. I was most surprised after my pre op endoscopy, that it was gone! It fixed itself, amazing. As to reflux, I had a bit of intermittent reflux in the past couple of years, I put it down to my big weight gain, and eating lot of chocolates. I was given pantoprazole that I took for 2-3 weeks, and was good afterward. Post op, gastric sleeve however, I was horrified by the strong reflux I had, even while on rabeprazole. Every day I was uncomfortable or in pain during my nightly reflux foaming and frothing attacks. I also noticed that at every food phase change, reflux was bad again, even with me eating the correct food, eating slowly and chewing lots. So for me, Nexium was heaven sent. It fixed my reflux, and from then on I was fine. Good luck to you.
  17. @@justhere4theshow Waking up like that is horrible! I would ask for a different med to see if that helps. Sometimes the combination of meds are needed. In terms of the weight gain - don't panic - you are probably retaining water or constipated. Be sure to hydrate! Take care!

    Goal weight

5'6" dr's goal is 150, but I know I look best 135-140. My goal is 128 because I want to have an allowance to gain a few pounds during maintenance, as a little weight gain sounds inevitable from what everyone says. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. Mine returned between year one and two after surgery. Was great while it lasted. It's tougher now fighting cravings and hunger urges to keep the weight off, then during the whole initial losing period. I'm sure like everything relating to the body, each person's experience will be different. My advice is to really concentrate on solidifying your new healthly eating habits while you're losing. For me venturing off the path even a little resulted in weight gain. Gotta stick to the plan forever.
  20. @ That's really interesting, thanks for posting it. Does anyone else find it a relief to see more medical research referring to elements of weight gain that are out of the patients control now? I mean, of course I know there are many things that are IN our control that we can do to keep our weight down, but hearing more about the hormones and genes that influence our need for food takes away some of the crippling guilt I have been carrying all my life. Sleeve & birth control

I have nexplanon and it's been wonderful! I have been consistently fat since I got it almost 2 years ago (read:no weight gain). I love that it's in my arm too, I didn't feel comfortable with the idea of anything being stuck inside my uterus especially since it can travel. With nexplanon, I'll always know if it's moved and it hasn't Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Explain the honeymoon period

The first 6 months after the sleeve you are healing and your stomach is swollen so you have the most restriction and can eat the least. This is the best time to build good healthy habits because your stomach is going to offer you the most support and you should hopefully have no legit physical hunger during this time period (notice I said legit physical hunger, you can still have head hunger or confuse acid for physical hunger). 6-18 months you are fully healed but you should still have little to no ghrelin (stomach hormone that signals the brain for hunger). It gradually returns over time. The first 18 months you get the most physical support from your body to facilitate weight loss. You also have your set point lowered so your body is not actively trying to maintain a higher weight. So while you have this support from your body and this hormone and physical reset, you should take advantage. Learn new eating habits so they because a new lifestyle not a diet and avoid things that cause weight gain. I don't eat carbs, I didn't eat them during the first 6 months and now I don't want them. If I have the occassional carb, it is a once a day once a week kind of thing, not a habit. They just don't appeal to me. You can really change the way you think about and relate to food if you follow the eating steps laid out in your plan. WLS is more than a physical thing, it offers the chance for a complete mental reset in how you think about and relate to food. If you don't follow the plan or the steps you blow that chance and a lot of people end up feeling like they are dieting forever. So the difference ends up being, creating a new way of life, or being on a diet forever, or worse, failing. This Dr has a lot of very good information about Weight loss and weight loss surgery
  23. Not all insurance deny surgery due to weight gain. That's one thing I've learned during researching. UHC doesn't deny if you have weight gain. Luckily! But I don't drink soda. Haven't in over a year. So I'm pretty excited. My issue is my thyroid. But that's okay. This is going to happen regardless. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. When I was prescribed Spironolactone for PCOS-related acne by a dermatologist when I was 20 he told me that it would likely cause a weight loss, and it did. At first. I was elated with the medicine because I lost about 10 pounds on it, saw my pores shrink and my acne vanish, and it caused my periods to stop for a few months (which at the time was something that I saw as a blessing rather than a worry). The honeymoon period ended but I hadn't realized it because the effects of the medicine were really insidious. Over time it contributed to substantial weight gain, sleep disruptions, fatigue, and a plethora of other problems. I started reading more reviews of the medicine on various boards and discovered that many other women had similar experiences, with positive effects at first followed by gradual negative ones. My endocrinologist had me wean off it last year prior to surgery. She said many women, especially those with endocrine issues, have experienced weight gain, depression, and other problems, and that it shouldn't be taken long-term but frequently is. My blood pressure has actually been much better since going off of it, and my skin actually looks much more youthful and clear without the drying effects of the medicine. I sleep better, am more energetic, and have definitely had an easier time losing weight. I would talk with your doctor about your symptoms and discuss whether it's a medicine you absolutely need to take.

    Polycystic ovarian syndrome?!

I haven't found any active PCOS support boards on here, I've seen a few boards but not a lot of traffic or activity from what I can see. It would be nice to connect with other PCOS women for support and encouragement. I have PCOS without cysts. Diagnosed at 29 after I hit about 210lbs, No cycle for 9 mos, I actually thought I was pregnant initially but was relieved when It was confirmed that I wasn't. I have 2 kids. Boy 15 and Girl 12. I was in Nursing school at the time and my kids were like 4 and 7 so we weren't ready for more kids at that time plus we were satisfied with 2. Diagnosis was confirmed after elevated testosterone levels seen in lab work. Everything else was ok. Elevated HbA1c of 6.1 pointing toward insulin resistance. Rapid weight gain over the last year (like 50lbs), had been sedentary during that year with so much studying to do-- no time to workout. Absence of menstrual cycle, therefore infertility issues. No other issues really at that time. I did not get any male pattern hair growth or baldness. I guess it did get a little thin up top but I attributed it to years of chemical damage. My hair is pretty thick so I didn't really notice it unless It was straightened. Weight continued to pile on, extreme difficulty shedding lbs with moderate efforts. As the weight piled on, I developed the PCOS belly (looking 8 mos preg) I never really had a belly. I had extreme mood changes, aggressive, hot tempered. I believe my skin darkened all over. I'm a darker skinned African American female but it just seems much darker than I was used to. Especially when I would see myself in pictures. My face was huuuuge, My blood pressure started to climb 160's/100's and that's when I said enough is enough. Anyways that's it for me. I wish I had done this about 4 years ago but that's Water under the bridge. I'm very pleased so far, and I think the sleeve is great for women with PCOS. I have no cravings for carbs and I feel myself getting back into good habits. Now that I'm seeing results I think those good habits will continue.
